Muzong Emperor Zaichun, Wenzong's eldest son, was born third month 23, Xianfeng 6, at Chuxiu Palace; his mother was Empress Xiaojinxian Niohuru.

In year 11 he began lessons under Compiler Li Hongzao. In month 7, renyin, a dying Wenzong named Zaichun crown prince before Zaiyuan, Duanhua, Jingshou, Sushun, and the Grand Council. Those eight were ordered to assist the regency.

On guimao Wenzong died and Chen Fuen and Wen Yu were called to the traveling palace. On jiachen the Empress and Sacred Mother both became empresses dowager. Memorials were told to bear the regents' endorsement on Grand Council slips. On yisi the five princes were spared routine audiences and ceremonial bows at feasts. Provincial tribute goods were halted. On bingwu Shuntian exams were rescheduled: civil provincial to month 9, grace military metropolitan to 10, military provincial to 11. Luo Bingzhang became Sichuan governor-general for the war. Liu Yuanhao was recalled to Beijing and Fu Ji took Yunnan-Guizhou. Chong Shi became Chengdu general and soon joined Sichuan command. Hubei troops retook Wuchang, Xianning, Tongcheng, and Jiangxi's Yining. On wushen day Jing Wen became Tibet commissioner. On jiyou day Prince Gong was allowed to mourn at the traveling palace. On gengxu day Xue Huan proposed merchant trial runs of Huai salt for supplies. The plan was approved. On xinhai day Guangdong rebels seized Ji'an. Guangxi troops retook Binzhou. On guichou day Xuanzong and his empress received added posthumous titles. On jiayin day Guangdong rebels seized Jing'an, Wuning, and Yining. On yimao day the era name Qixiang was proclaimed.

At the eighth-month new moon, dingsi, sun and moon conjoined and the five planets aligned. Guangdong rebels took Yanzhou but troops soon retook it. On wuwu day troops retook Xinchang, Fengxin, Ruizhou, and Shanggao. On jiwei day Jing Lian was sent to Yarkand to investigate Ying Yun. Zeng Guofan's request was granted: Shanghai steamers went to the Anhui River for training. On xinyou day Hubei troops retook De'an. On renxu day Jiangxi troops retook Wuning and Jing'an. On guihai day the late Emperor's death edict was issued. Sheng Bao's troops retook Puzhou. On dingmao day Nian bandits crossed the canal; Sheng Bao and Sengge Rinchen were told to cut them off and block a northern breakout. On wuchen day Hu Linyi took sick leave and Li Xuyi acted as Hubei governor. On gengwu day Dong Yuanchun asked the empresses dowager to rule and princes to assist. Zaiyuan's faction drafted a rebuking edict. On jiaxu day Zeng Guoquan retook Anqing. On wuyin day Guangxi troops retook Xunzhou. On gengchen day Sichuan frontier bandits seized Songpan. On xinsi day Anqing honors raised Guan Wen and Zeng Guofan to Junior Guardian, Hu Linyi to Grand Guardian, with hereditary ranks; Li Xuyi got a yellow jacket; Yang Zaifu and Duolong'a got Cloud Cavalry Captain inheritances. On guimao day the late Emperor became Wenzong, posthumously Xietian Yiyun Zhizhong Chui Mo Maode Zhenwu Shengxiao Yuan Gong Duanren Kuanmin Xian. Miao Peilin seized Zhengyang and Huoqiu and besieged Shouzhou.

At the ninth-month new moon, bingxu, the two empresses dowager received the titles Ci'an and Cixi. On xinmao day Yang Zaifu retook Chizhou. On renchen day Nian raiders reached Qishui and Gong and were driven off. Zhang Liangji was recalled to Beijing. Jinzhou was shaken by an earthquake. On jiawu day Sichuan troops pacified Huili's Hui rebels. On dingyou day Yue Bin's report of Salar surrender and troop withdrawal was approved. On gengzi day Sichuan troops retook Mingshan. On renyin day Duolong'a and Zeng Guoquan retook Tongcheng, Susong, Qizhou, Huangmei, and Guangji. Peng Yulin and Cheng Daji retook Huangzhou. Hu Linyi died; Li Xuyi became Hubei governor and stayed on the Hubei-Anhui front. Peng Yulin became Anhui governor. On guimao day Zhejiang troops retook Yuqian and Changhua. Guangdong rebels raided Yanzhou and routed Zhang Yuliang's forces. On jiachen day Britain and France pulled garrisons from Guangzhou and Britain withdrew Tianjin cavalry. On yisi day Sengge Rinchen crushed Qingzhou Nian bands and regained his court post and yellow bridle. On wushen day the coffin procession reached the capital road and Chengde and Wanping taxes were remitted. On jiyou day Miao Peilin turned rebel and Yuan Jiasan was sent with Jia Zhen to crush him. On jiayin day the two empresses dowager returned to the palace. On yimao day Zaiyuan, Duanhua, and Sushun were stripped for tampering with edicts and blocking regency; five Grand Councilors were dismissed. Prince Gong was told to convene the ministries and censorate for legal judgment. Jia Zhen, Zhou Zupe, Shen Zhaolin, and Zhao Guang urged power from the throne and rules for the empress dowager's audiences. Sheng Bao asked the empress dowager to rule in person with princes assisting. Princes and grand secretaries were told to settle policy and report up. Prince Chun Yiwan was called to Beijing. That day Zaiyuan, Duanhua, and Sushun lost rank and were arrested. Princes Rui and Chun were sent to seize Sushun and bring him to Beijing. From tenth month 16 every yamen would rotate daily duty. Bao Chao's troops retook Qianshan. That month Xining and Nianbo grain taxes were remitted after disturbance.

At the tenth-month new moon, bingchen, Yixin became Prince Regent on the Grand Council with Gui Liang, Shen Zhaolin, Bao Jun, and Wen Xiang; Cao Yuying apprenticed above them. Shengjing Vice Minister Woren was recalled to Beijing. On dingsi day the throne sought counsel and tightened the gates. On wuwu day the coffin reached Beijing and rested in Qianqing Palace. On gengshen day the era name Qixiang became Tongzhi. On xinyou day Prince Gong proposed slicing Zaiyuan, Duanhua, and Sushun for treason. Zaiyuan and Duanhua were allowed suicide, Sushun was beheaded, five others were dismissed, and Mukedeng was sent to the colonies. On renxu day Chen Fuen, Huang Zonghan, Liu Kun, Cheng Qi, De Kejintai, and Fu Ji lost their posts. The court declared no more digging into factions. Princes and ministers were warned against power-grabbing and bribery. On jiazi day Zaichun ascended the throne at Taihe Hall and received homage. Edict to the realm: next year is Tongzhi 1, with broad mercy—even crimes beyond usual amnesty were forgiven. The five princes were spared name taboo in edicts and memorials. On yichou an empress dowager edict told the Household Department to economize palace spending. Sengge Rinchen regained his Boduolerga princedom. The Ministry of Punishments was told to close the Five-Character Banknote case. A general order went out to clean up jails. On bingyin day Miao Peilin seized Shouzhou. On bingzi day, suburban pairing was fixed at three ancestors and five cult lords and the late emperor's enshrinement was titled Zong. Grand secretaries Qi Junzao and Weng Xincun and ex-Rites Minister Li Tangjie were recalled. Chen Fu'en's property was seized and he was jailed for trial. The army retook Wuwei and Suizhou. On dingchou day, ministers were rebuked for routine procrastination. Guanwen, Zeng Guofan, and others were told to plan Miao militia suppression and pacification. Rebels took Xiaoshan, Shaoxing, Jiangshan, and Changshan and Zuo Zongtang was urged to hurry relief. On jimao day, Beile Delekeseleng was freed from prison. On xinsi day, regency rules were submitted and approved by the empress dowager. A grace civil exam was ordered. Wula pearl fishing had been stopped eight years earlier. Now the court ordered it still suspended. On renwu day, Chen Fu'en was sent to Xinjiang exile. Bao Kun and Dong Xun were assigned to the Zongli Yamen. On jiashen day, French troops left Tianjin.

On month 11, yiyou, the Emperor installed Cian and Cixi for regency at Yangxin Hall. On bingxu day, provinces were told to judge missionary disputes fairly by merit. On dinghai day, embezzlement of Revenue five-character notes was made a defined crime. Xi Lin and others regained office. On gengyin day, armies were ordered to recommend commanders. On renchen day, Shandong sect rebels were crushed by Cheng Lu and chief Yan Xiulun was executed. On jiawu day: Zhang Liangji had accused He Youbao of murdering Deng Erheng at Xu Zhiming's instigation. Xu Zhiming falsified merit for He Youbao; Fu Ji was told to investigate and Xu was removed and impeached. On yiwei day, Shi Dakai fled to Suining. On gengzi day, talent nomination was ordered on the example of Zeng, Hu, and Luo. On xinchou day, Shaoxing and Zhuji fell and Wang Luqian was dismissed and arrested. On renyin day, Fu Ji lost office for cowardice and tricks. Pan Duo gained second rank and acted Yunnan-Guizhou governor-general. Sengge Rinchen won a great victory over alliance rebels near Shouzhang. On guimao day, Peng Yulin was assigned to Yuan Jiasan's command. The army retook Lai'an. On yisi day, Gao Yanhu impeached Xu Zhiming for corruption and unchecked Yunnan militias. Pan Duo was told to investigate. On dingwei day, provinces were told to recommend good officials and learned men. On gengxu day, Wu Tang took Jiangning intendant, acting transport commissioner, and northern grain depot. On guichou day, rebels took Chuzhou.

Peng Yulin was shifted to await War vice minister appointment. On gengchen day, Nian rebels besieged Yingzhou. Sheng Bao attacked Yan Shusen; the court told Yan to repent and keep his honor. Xue Huan's memorial told the Zongli Yamen to seek Anglo-French troops against rebels. On renwu day, the Second Imperial Son was posthumously made Prince Min. Zuo Zongtang was urged to take Zhejiang. Sheng Bao was sent to Yingzhou with his force. On guiwei day, Sengge Rinchen destroyed fleeing rebels at Caozhou on the Henan bank.

Tongzhi year 1, month 1, jiashen: Cian and Cixi at Cining Palace and the Emperor led the court in homage. He received New Year homage at Qianqing Palace. This became the yearly practice. Lin Kui and Zeng Guofan were made associate grand secretaries. On yiyou day, acre and transit levies were partly withdrawn and campaign families were comforted. Jiangxi's pacification earned Bao Chao a yellow jacket. Li Shizhong retook Luhe and received the same reward. On bingxu day, Zeng and Zuo were told to secure Quzhou and relieve Huizhou. Zeng Guofan was told to pick a general for Shanghai. Jiang Yili's troops joined Zuo Zongtang. On gengyin day, Sheng Bao went to Yingzhou and Zheikedunbu and Wang Rongji took over defense. On xinmao day, Danleng was retaken and chief Lan Chaoding was executed. The army retook Pingyue. On renchen day, Li Shizhong retook Tianchang. On guisi day, Li Xiucheng took Fengxian, Nanhui, and Chuansha. Duxing'a was told to block Wusong with gunboats. On bingshen day, Yue Bin was dismissed for indulging rebels. Lin Kui acted Shaanxi-Gansu governor and with Shen Zhaolin pacified the Salars. Rebels pressed toward Shanghai. Xue Huan said British and French officers aided defense. The court praised this. Earlier on dingyou Mianxing sought to change Hui tribute collection; Jinglian went to Aksu to investigate. Jinglian impeached again; Mianxing lost office and was banished to Jilin. Hui Prince Aimadte was released and returned to Kuche. Edict warned Muslim-frontier officials against surcharges. Yingyun was ordered to stop private mortgaging of Hui land around Aksu. On bingchen Zeng Guoquan became Jiangsu administration commissioner for military affairs without recusal. On dingsi Taiping rebels took Huangyan. Government troops relieved Zhenjiang and Huizhou. On xinyou Duohui and Cheng Rui lied that Salars had submitted, were stripped, and soon sentenced to death. Yue Bin was stripped for shielding offenders and banished to Xinjiang. On renxu Du Xing'a garrisoned Tianchang and Luhe and Li Shizhong moved to Jiangpu and Pukou for joint action. Taiping rebels took Anyi, which was soon recovered. On guihai Nian rebels besieged Qi County. On jiazi Woren's texts on emperors and memorials were lectured in Hongde Hall. On yichou Sengge Rinchen routed Nian rebels who fled Qi County toward Tongxu and were pursued. On wuchen Shi Dakai fled into Fengdu. Tian Xingyu was allowed to resign commissioner, take troops to Sichuan, and serve under Luo Bingzhang. Han Chao was ordered to plan Guizhou defense. On jisi Xue Huan captured the Gaobridge fort with British and French troops. American Ward was granted fourth-rank insignia and peacock feather. On renshen Jinling Taiping rebels crossed the river and raided Jiangpu. Edict told Zeng Guofan and Du Xing'a to intercept with gunboats. On guiyou Duolong'a's army attacked Luzhou. On bingzi Zeng Bingzhong lost office for Zhujing's fall near Shanghai. Shanghai and Anglo-French forces destroyed the Xiaotang fort. Chonghou and Cheng Ming were told to supervise Tianjin coastal defense. On dingchou the Zheng and Yi princes' ranks were restored. Edict told Li Xuyi to settle northern Anhui refugees. That month Tingzhou and other disturbed places' tax quotas were remitted.

On wuzi bandits took Qingtian. Zhang Yao in mourning was put solely in charge of suppression. On gengyin drought since the first month led to edict for self-examination and frank counsel. Zuo Zongtang recovered Suian. Song Jingshi's surrendered followers rebelled at Lanyi. On renchen Taiping rebels attacked Lu, He, and Jiangpu. On jiawu Sheng Bao relieved Yingzhou in a great victory. On bingshen recalling Song Jingshi to serve despite guilt was approved. On wuxu Li Xuyi and Zheng Yuanshan were told to assist Sheng Bao. On xinchou Zhuang Qiling presented twelve reform measures on learning, office, levies, and military supply. On renzi Muslim-frontier tribute items were remitted. That month the Emperor prayed for rain at the Grand High Hall thrice.

Taiping rebels threatened Xi'an; Guanwen and Zheng Yuanshan were urged to suppress them jointly. On dingchou, Ci'an and Cixi received honorific titles and grace was proclaimed by edict. On wuyin, Duo Long'a took Luzhou; Chen Yucheng fled to Shouzhou and Miao Peilin trapped him. Peilin was pardoned by order. On jimao, Zhang Yunlan recovered Jingde. Zeng Zhengan recovered Nanling. Salar rebels besieged Bayan Obo and Shen Zhaolin led relief. Shanghai troops recovered Qingpu. On gengchen, He Guiqing reached the capital in custody for joint ministerial trial. That month, flood-hit Anzhou and other districts had overdue taxes remitted.

Li Shizhong intercepted Jiang relief rebels with a great victory. On jichou, Guangxi recovered Taiping and Liu Changyou went to Xunzhou to supervise. Rebels took Weinan. On renchen, Wang Lüqian was banished to Xinjiang. Rebels besieged Wenzhou and Ruian; Qingduan was told to relieve them and Zuo Zongtang to help. Rebels attacked Tong Pass; Shen Zhaolin was told to order Ma Dezhao to aid Shaanxi. On yisi, Chen Yucheng was sent to the capital and ordered dismembered on the way. Li Zhan of Runing militia rebelled and government forces wiped them out.
