Commentary: Muzong reigned young under a regent empress dowager. The realm revived; in ten years rebels were crushed and all was calm. Without court unity and harmony of generals, how reach this? Once he ruled in person, he allowed himself no leisure. On disaster he examined himself — utmost diligence. Hearing of disaster he remitted and relieved — utmost benevolence. He ignored auspicious omens — utmost clarity. Had he lived to middle age, his daily renewal would have matched the ancients in glory. Yet he died young, his work unfinished — pity indeed!
