Treatise 15
2
The classics say that heaven has its three luminaries and earth its five phases, and that when the five phases fall into disorder, it is the earth's own qi that is at fault. When water fails to moisten and sink downward, fire to blaze upward, wood to bend and grow straight, metal to yield to reshaping, and earth to bring forth the harvest—and the harvest itself does not ripen—the phases are said to have lost their proper nature. The five phases take their character from the earth itself; because human beings live upon the earth, the five human affairs answer to the earth's five phases as well—perhaps this was the earliest sense of the Great Plan. The Ming History's treatise on the five phases records portents and anomalies while cutting away forced pairings of events with cosmic responses—a sound approach indeed. Here we follow the Ming History's model, reconcile it with the ancient understanding, and thereby fill the gaps left by earlier histories.
3
The Great Plan states, "Water is defined as moistening and descending." When water fails in this office, the result is a sign of cosmic blame. Persistent cold, unending gloom, snow and frost, hail, fish prodigies, locust swarms, swine plagues, dragon-and-serpent omens, strange horses, human deformities, epidemics, drum prodigies, falling stones, floods, aberrant waters, and black portents of every kind all belong to the element of water.
