洪範曰：「金曰從革。」金不從革，則為咎徵。凡恒暘、詩妖、毛蟲之孽、犬禍、金石之妖、白眚、白祥皆屬之於金。

The Great Plan states, "Metal is defined as following change and transformation. When metal fails in this office, the result is a sign of cosmic blame." Persistent drought, poetic portents, infestations of hairy insects, canine calamities, prodigies of metal and stone, white blights, and white omens—all these belong to the element of metal.

In the ninth month of the first year of Kangxi, Changli endured drought. In the ninth month of the third year of Tongzhi, the bell at the Eastern Peak Temple rang of its own accord. In the ninth month of the eighth year, a pot at an inn in Changling, Pengze, began to ring; the sound carried for several li and did not cease for more than a month.

In the seventh year, at the home of Li Wang, a commoner of Shangzhou, a dog sat atop a pit and spoke in human words, saying, "The elder is too old, the younger too young." It was bound and put to death. In the thirteenth year, a commoner of Zouping gave birth to a child with a dog's head and a monkey's body that could bark.
