The Grand Historian says: In ancient times, a minister's service was classified in five grades: establishing the ancestral temples and securing the realm through virtue was called xun; service through counsel was called lao; service through physical exertion was called gong; making clear one's rank was called fa; and accumulated days of service was called yue. The oath sworn when titles were granted said: 'May the Yellow River become narrow as a belt, and Mount Tai wear down to a whetstone. May the state enjoy lasting peace, extending down to its descendants and posterity." At first, they never failed to wish to strengthen their foundations, yet gradually the branches and leaves declined and weakened.

I have read about the marquises created from Gaozu's meritorious officials, examined when they were first enfeoffed, and considered the reasons their titles were lost. I said: how strange these recent accounts are! The Book of Documents says, "Bring the myriad states into harmony." From Xia through Shang, some endured for several thousand years. Zhou enfeoffed eight hundred nobles, and after the reigns of You and Li, they appear in the Spring and Autumn Annals. The Documents speak of the marquises and earls of Tang and Yu, who passed through the Three Dynasties for more than a thousand years, preserving themselves while guarding and shielding the Son of Heaven. Was this not because they were deeply committed to benevolence and righteousness and upheld the laws from above? When Han rose, more than a hundred meritorious officials were enfeoffed. Because the realm had only just been pacified, great cities and famous capitals lay dispersed and ruined. Only two or three households in ten could be counted, and so the largest marquisates had no more than ten thousand families, while the smaller ones held five or six hundred households. After several generations, the people all returned to their native villages, households increased, and figures like Xiao, Cao, Jiang, and Guan sometimes reached forty thousand households. Small marquises doubled their holdings, becoming wealthy like them. Their descendants became arrogant and extravagant, forgetting their ancestors and indulging in debauchery. By the Taichu period, within a century, only five marquises remain visible; the rest all perished through violations of law, losing their lives and states—utterly gone. Perhaps the legal net was somewhat less tightly drawn, yet none of them maintained anxious reverence toward the prohibitions of their own time.

Living in the present age and observing the ways of antiquity provides a mirror for self-reflection, but they are not necessarily identical. Emperors and kings differed in rites and varied in priorities; in the end, success was the thread by which they were judged. How could they be bound to a single pattern? Observing what brought honor and favor, and what brought disgrace and humiliation, is also a record of the gains and losses of the age—why must one rely on old accounts? Therefore, I have carefully traced their beginnings and ends and presented their records in a table, though in some cases the full roots and branches cannot be recovered; I recorded what was clear, and left doubtful matters blank. If future gentlemen wish to investigate and arrange them, they may peruse this work.
