Praise: by nature respectful, frugal, and forgiving—in flood or drought he prayed in secret or stood barefoot in the hall. When they proposed the old Yuqing grounds for a park, he said, "My father’s park is already vast—why this?" In private he wore washed clothes and plain silk for curtains and bedding. Hungry at night, he thought of roast lamb but forbade asking, lest the kitchens slaughter stock in advance. Doubtful capital cases went up for review—each year he spared more than a thousand. A single death-sentence slip barred civil candidates from promotion for life. He told his ministers, "I never curse men with death—how would I abuse execution!" Xi Xia raids—he drove them out; Khitan covenant-breakers got a higher annual gift. Forty-two years in power: governance seemed slack, yet ministers were rarely cruel; law seemed loose, yet judges were mostly fair. Favoritism never wrecked the age’s order; petty men never drowned the good. Sympathy and loyal forbearance nourished Song’s three-century foundation. Once heirs reversed his ways, disorder followed step by step. The Classic: "A ruler rests in benevolence." He truly had nothing to regret.
