Emperor Shenzong—full style from Continuing Heaven through Sagely Filial—personal name Xu, was Yingzong’s eldest son; his mother was Empress Xuanren, Lady Gao. Glorious Calendar 8, fourth month, wuyin: born in the Pu palace amid auspicious light; rats were said to have breathed five-colored clouds. Eighth month: he was named Zhongzhen. He rose from guard deputy to right thousand-oxen general in three steps. Jiayou 8: he entered Qingning Palace with Yingzong and dreamed a spirit bore him to Heaven. At Yingzong’s accession he became An commissioner and Duke of Guangguo. That year, fifth month, renxu: he began classical study in the Eastern Palace. With a high nose and dragon-like bearing, his every motion was measured. He studied until he forgot meals; Yingzong often sent eunuchs to make him stop. He kept cap and robes formal and never used a fan even in summer heat. When Wang Tao lectured, he had his brother Hao bow with him. Ninth month: Zhongwu command, co-chancellor, Prince of Huaiyang, and the name Xu. Zhiping 1, sixth month: he became Prince of Ying. Year three, third month: he married Xiang Minzhong’s granddaughter. On wuchen the cabinet was reshaped: Han Qi, Zeng Gongliang, Wen Yanbo, Fu Bi, Cao Yi, Zhang Sheng, Zongnu, Ouyang Xiu, Zhao Gai, Chen Shengzhi, Lü Gongbi, and the princes received new ranks and posts. Officials were promoted by degree.

Second month, yiyou: he first held court in Zichen Hall. Lady Xiang became empress. On dinghai, inner palace and city offices were ordered to memorial jointly and review item by item. On wuzi, Li Rizun became Prince of Nanping. Dong Zhan of Miaochuan received inspection grand guardian rank. Tomb supplies were to come from the three departments without troubling the people. Six pulse physicians were to be tested at the medical academy. On gengyin, the tenth of the fourth month became Shared Heaven festival. On xinmao, a white rainbow crossed the sun. On renchen, marrying princesses were to meet their in-laws formally. On jiachen, Fan chiefs who led three hundred tents to Xia were captured and executed.

Inspectors were dispatched through Shaanxi, Hebei, and the eastern circuits to measure distress and comfort the people. On renshen, Wu Kui returned to his post. Prefectures ceased sending yearly food, fruit, and drug tribute. On guiyou, frontier offices were told to expose cowardly, aged, or sick commanders.

Fifth month, xinsi: the drought drove the cabinet to pray for rain. On yisi, Baowen Pavilion opened with its full roster of scholars.

On renchen, the jade book of reign was laid before Funing Hall. On bingwu, a county magistrate named Yuwen Zhihao sent blunt counsel.

Twelfth month, bingchen: Long Fan of the southwest paid tribute. On xinyou, next year's New Year eclipse brought austerity from yichou—no hall, lean table, no felicitations. Wang Shiyuan was exiled for rejecting Xu Zun's harsh code.

Guo Kui sent Zhao Xi to take Xia's two forts and fix the line. When Xia broke faith, Zhao Xi walled Suizhou without yielding the forts—the place was renamed Suide. On wuxu, frontier officers Zhe Jishi and Wei Mingshan were ennobled as Zhao Huaihun. On bingchen, censors won the right to petition straight through the gate. On wuwu, Zongnu returned to the council. On jiwei, Xia envoys thanked the throne for the seal. On xinyou, heirs of Yang Chengxin and Tian Zhongjin entered service. Eleventh month, yichou: Han Jiang took the New Policies office. On jiaxu, distant imperial clansmen lost automatic favor appointments. On bingzi, military judicial inspectors were removed. The Farmland and Waterworks code was issued.
