Appraisal: naturally filial and brotherly, he waited on the two palaces all day through heat and cold alike. In the Eastern Palace he read with the Qi and Jia princes; when Wang Tao lectured on the classics they bowed together—and court and country called him worthy. On taking the throne he was modest before his ministers, welcomed blunt speech, looked into hidden wrongs, and cared for orphans, the aged, and the poor. He built no palaces, made no pleasure tours, and bent every effort to rule—aiming at great achievement. Soon Wang Anshi became chief minister. Wang Anshi was stubborn and sure of himself; seeing how the founders had wanted You, Ji, and Lingwu yet armies kept failing, the emperor burned to wipe away generations of shame—and Wang, with warped learning, seized the moment. Green Sprouts, Baojia, equal transport, market trade, and waterworks followed—and the land boiled while weeping protesters poured in. He never woke to it: he drove out senior statesmen, silenced critics, and pushed the laws through without hesitation. At last the founders' sound laws and good aims were almost wholly undone. After that flatterers rose day by day, loyalty thinned, and troubles multiplied. Alas!
