使 使 殿 殿
Zhezong—posthumous Xianyuan through Zhaoxiao—taboo name Xu, Shenzong’s sixth son, born of Empress Xinsheng Zhu. Xining 9, twelfth month, day 7 jichou: he was born in the palace under a red glow that filled the room. First named Yong, he received honorary grand marshal rank, Tianping command, and the title Duke of Jun. the fifth year of Yuanfeng: he rose to open-folder grandee, Zhangwu commissioner, and Prince of Yan’an. the seventh year of Yuanfeng, third month: at a Jiying feast the prince stood by—comely, measured—and ministers bowed twice in praise. the eighth year of Yuanfeng, second month: as Shenzong sickened, Wang Gui urged early investiture and regency for the empress dowager; the emperor agreed. Third month, jiawu new moon: at Funing the empress dowager ruled from behind the curtain and told Gui’s party, “The prince is grave and quick to learn. Since the emperor fell ill he has copied sutras by hand to pray for him.” She showed the copies—each stroke meticulous—and Gui’s party congratulated him; an order then made him crown prince. Red light had long haunted the heir’s halls; now it burned like flame.

On wuxu, Shenzong died and the heir ascended. On jihai, the throne proclaimed amnesty even for crimes routine pardons excluded. Courtiers rose in rank and the armies received bounty. Messengers carried word of mourning to Liao. A white rainbow crossed the sun. On gengzi, the empress dowager became grand empress dowager, the empress became empress dowager, and Virtuous Consort Zhu imperial consort mother. Wang Gui was named mausoleum commissioner. On jiayin, pressed by the court, he began to govern with Grand Empress Dowager Gao.

On jiwei, his uncles Hao of Yong and Juan of Cao won the bow-without-naming privilege. The realm was ordered to taboo the name Zunfu, the grand empress dowager’s father. He ordered weightier border business to be debated by the Military Affairs Bureau and Three Departments before submission. On gengshen, Wang Gui of Xun rose to Duke of Qi. Hao became Prince of Yang and Juan Prince of Jing, both grand guardians. Brothers Ji, Bian, Yu, and Si rose from ducal to commandery princes of Suining, Taining, Xianning, and Puning. Zongcheng, Zongyuan, Zongyu, Zongyin, and Zongchuo each received open-folder grandee rank. Wen Yanbo became minister of education, Cao Yi grand guardian, Wang Anshi minister of works, others were promoted, and retirees got belts, silver, and silk by degree. On xinyou, Yan Hui and Mencius were paired with Confucius in the temple.

Summer, fourth month, bingyin: he first held audience in Zichen Hall. On xinwei, tax arrears before the sixth year of Yuanfeng were forgiven. On jiaxu, Li Qiande became co-signer and Dong Zhan honorary grand marshal. An edict recalled Shenzong’s nineteen-year rule and blamed clerks for vexing, paper-bound execution that never reached the people. The court and provinces were told to obey in earnest, matching Shenzong’s wish to ease the common people. On yihai, her birthday’s second yi day became the Kuncheng festival. On dingchou, Lü Gongzhu was called to lecture at court. Military Affairs and the Secretariat-Chancellery were told to meet at the chief ministers’ hall. Inspectors were again dispatched to review circuit commissioners, as under Shenzong. On gengchen, Lü Huiqing crossed the western border, seized six forts, and took six hundred heads. On xinsi, gifts and accession word went to Liao; on jiashen, Wang E was fined for an out-of-role memorial. On bingxu, Gao Fu’s line was rewarded after he fell in battle. On dinghai, old tax arrears were forgiven again.

Sixth month, gengwu: Xu Ji of Chuzhou, noted for filial piety, received silk and rice. On dinghai, all officials were invited to report court failures and folk suffering plainly.

Seventh month, wuxu: Lü Gongzhu became left vice director of state affairs. Group baojia drill was ended in the capital circuit and the Three Routes. On bingwu, Liao sent mourners. On bingchen, a white rainbow crossed the sun. Xiong Ben was fined over a memorial on Guihua chief Nong Zhihui. New fort building at Yuanzhou was stopped.

Eighth month, yichou: investigators were to name able men they found. On jisi, Han Jiang of Zhenjiang became an open-folder grandee. On guiyou, a mission wished Liao birthday and New Year. On yihai, Wang Ying’s sons were rewarded after he fell at Jialu.

Ninth month, wuxu: Shenzong’s posthumous title Yingwen Liewu Shengxiao was proclaimed to heaven, earth, temple, and altars. On jihai, the imperial registers were offered at Funing. On jiyou, envoys carried thanks to Liao.

Tenth month, jiazi: Xia sent horses for the burial. On guiyou, remonstrance posts were set up after the Tang Six Canons. On dingchou, each attendant was to name two remonstrance candidates. Surveillance censors gained remonstrance duties; palace censors gained investigation duties. The charity granary system was ended. On jimao, burdens were to be eased and censors were to punish officials who let relief rules die. The Yellow River broke through at Daming. On yiyou, Shenzong was interred at Yongyu. On bingxu, the square-field system was ended. Messengers mourned the death of the Xia ruler’s mother.

Yuanyou 1, spring, gengyin new moon: the reign title changed to Yuanyou. On bingwu, capital sentences were lightened one grade and beating punishments were remitted. On dingwei, return gifts to the Goryeo king in horses, belts, and goods were enlarged. War-time offices set up after the fourth year of Yuanfeng in Shaanxi and Hedong were dismantled. On bingchen, after prolonged drought he prayed for rain at Xiangguo Temple. A temple for Shenzong was founded. On wuwu, sweet dew fell.

Second month, xinyou: after the Daming breach left fields ruined and people hungry, Han Jiang was sent to relieve them. On yichou, work began on Shenzong’s Veritable Records. On dingmao, attendants were each to name two fit circuit commissioners, with punishment for bad picks. On gengwu, frontier trade with Xia was banned. On xinwei, Dong Zhan died and his son Aligu took Hexi command and Miaochuan leadership. On gengchen, Xia presented tribute. On xinsi, Jian Zhoufu lost office for changing the salt law.

Intercalary month, gengyin: Cai Que left office. Sima Guang became left vice director and vice chancellor. Han Wei, Lü Dafang, Sun Yong, and Fan Chunren were ordered to revise the labor-service law. On renchen, Lü Gongzhu became vice chancellor. On bingwu, Li Qingchen moved to left vice director and Lü Dafang to right vice director. A white rainbow crossed the sun. On dingwei, the court named Grand Empress Dowager Gao’s palace Chongqing and its hall Chongqing Shoukang; the empress dowager’s palace Longyou and hall Longyou Cihui. On gengxu, Khotan’s king received belts and ritual goods. On xinhai, Zhang Dun left office. On jiayin, attendants, censors, and university officers were each to name two learned, upright men for teaching posts. On yimao, Fan Chunren joined the military commission as associate commissioner. On bingchen, unburied dead in the capital were interred. Ever-normal granary overseers were removed from every prefecture.

Third month, xinwei: patronage posts could no longer bump registered appointees. A Petition Review Office let those punished since Xining appeal. The university held a public exam under its vice president and doctors, by the spring supplement rule. On guiyou, Kaifeng gained a judicial intendant. On yihai, the Xihe Lankui fiscal commission was dissolved. On jimao, Guangji Canal grain transport resumed. On xinsi, commissioners were to report any folk hardship needing easing. Cheng Yi was appointed lecturer at Chongzheng Hall. On yiyou, active officials were allowed to hold nominal concurrent titles.

Fifth month, dingsi new moon: Han Wei became Vice Director of the Chancellery. Circuit “heavy salary” posts were scrapped and pre-Xining pay rules restored. On gengshen, Xia sent envoys to congratulate the new reign. On renxu, each court attendant, censor, and circuit intendant was told to nominate one county magistrate. On wuchen, Cheng Yi was assigned to draft the Directorate of Education statutes. On jisi, the court visited Princes Yang and Jing and commissioned nine of their sons. On guiyou, the left and right Imperial Studs were re-established. On renwu, Wen Yanbo was ordered to take precedence over the chief ministers.

Sixth month, jiachen: a Spring and Autumn lecturer was added. Lü Huiqing lost his post and was sent to nominal duty at Nanjing and Suzhou. On wushen, Fu Bi was enshrined beside Shenzong in the imperial temple. On gengxu, Venus was visible by day. On jiayin, the court called for moral order and told officials to stop hunting petty private offenses. Tongli Army was restored. Cheng Yi submitted a memorial on nurturing the emperor’s moral conduct.

Seventh month, dingsi: investigating magistrates were created. On xinyou, the ten-category civil service examination was instituted. Liu Shu, who helped edit the Comprehensive Mirror, died unrewarded; the court then posted his sons. On yichou, Xia ruler Bingchang died. On gengwu, Xia envoys came for the Grand Empress Dowager’s birthday.

Eighth month, xinmao: Ever-Normal Granaries reverted to the old rules and Green Sprouts cash ended. On renchen, the emperor’s brother Si was made Duke of Qi. On jiawu, Champa presented tribute. On renzi, five-colored clouds were seen by the sun. Cizhou reported grain in separate furrows with matching ears—an auspicious sign.

Ninth month, bingchen new moon: Sima Guang died. On jiwei, the court made offerings at Jingling Palace. On xinyou, the Bright Hall rites honored Shenzong as associate and brought a general amnesty. On dingmao, Su Shi passed probation and became Hanlin academician and drafting edict-writer. On jimao, Zhang Zao left office.

Tenth month, bingxu: Confucius’s hereditary title was changed from “Spreading Sage” to “Honoring Sage.” On gengyin, Venus was visible by day again. On renchen, Xia sent envoys to report a death in mourning. On gengzi, Song sent envoys to mourn with Xia. Eleventh month, wuwu: Lü Dafang became palace vice minister; Liu Zhi became right vice premier. On yihai, Khotan presented tribute. On gengchen, salt-well “official stream” levies were waived.

Twelfth month, gengyin: after mourning, officials were barred from honorific title petitions, as in the third year of Yuanfeng. On wuxu, Xiaofu Valley Mountain in Zheng, Huazhou, gave way. On wushen, a mild snowless winter prompted release of prisoners held for review. That year floods hit Hebei and the Chu and Hai regions.

Yuanyou 2, spring, yichou: Qianshun, son of Bingchang, was recognized as Xia ruler. On wuchen, civil examiners were forbidden to test on Laozi, Zhuangzi, or Liezi. On xinsi, Su Zhe and Liu Fen were ordered to edit Shenzong’s collected writings. A white rainbow spanned the sun.

Second month, dinghai: Zhu Guangting was dispatched to Hebei to aid flood victims. Southwestern circuits were excused from yearly baojia inspections. On dingyou, Khotan received added gifts of belt, robe, and ritual vessels. On jihai, civil-service promotions were capped at one hundred candidates a year. On xinchou, Shaanxi and Hedong were ordered to use the mutual-support expedition supply rules. That month an earthquake struck Daizhou.

Third month, renxu: the Grand Empress Dowager’s own edict limited her investiture to Chongzheng Hall. On wuchen, every attendant at court and in the provinces was to nominate one prefect annually. The Censorate was told to crack down on lavish and overreaching customs. Xia sent a thank-you mission. On guiyou, Shenzong’s spirit seat was placed in Xuanguang Hall at Jingling Palace. On gengchen, inner-palace attendants were capped at one hundred below Palace Attendant rank.

Fourth month, bingxu: Jiaozhi sent tribute. On dinghai, Jie’ezuo, son of Gui Zhang, attacked east of Tao. On wuzi, the court reviewed prisoners. On jichou, Wen Yanbo was ordered to join cabinet sessions every ten days. On xinmao, the emperor proclaimed drought austerity—leaving the hall, cutting meals, and repenting to win relief. On dingyou, censors were assigned to check provincial appeals that the Ministry of Personnel had failed to redress. On jihai, drought led the Grand Empress Dowager to postpone her investiture rites. On guimao, rain came. On yichou, the scholar Chen Shidao of Xuzhou received a Bozhou revenue post. On dingwei, the irregular “decree” examination track was revived. On wushen, the court ended austerity and resumed normal audiences and banquets. Li Qingchen left office.

Fifth month, guichou: Xia laid siege to Nanchuan Stockade. On dingmao, Liu Zhi became left vice premier and Wang Cun right vice premier. On renshen, Khotan sent tribute again. On dingchou, vacant censor posts could be filled by joint nomination from top remonstrators and Hanlin scholars.

Sixth month, xinchou: An Tao took charge of the Bureau of Military Affairs. On renyin, a melon-shaped star burst from Wenchang. On bingwu, Jieyao of Miaochuan submitted and received a third-rank palace guard commission.

Seventh month, xinhai: the Revenue Ministry was ordered to revise the fiscal Accounting Records. Han Jiang retired with the honorary title Minister of Works. Xia attacked Zhenrong Army. The capital region and Three Circuits were ordered to muster and train baojia. Fines for shortfalls at tax and monopoly stations were reinstated. On bingchen, surplus yearly local tribute lists were cut. On wuwu, Liao’s Xiao Dechong was banqueted at Drooping Arch Hall for Kuncheng—the first such reception with music. On gengshen, Li Qiande was promoted to Prince of Nanping. On xinyou, Chengzhou was redesignated Quyang Army. On xinwei, Han Wei left office.

Eighth month, xinsi: Cheng Yi left the lectureship and was posted acting head of the Luoyang imperial college. On guiwei, Tao–He raid victims received cash and grain, and bereaved families received silk. Promotion through purchased grain tribute was put back on the old rules. On yiyou, Lü Dafang was charged with installing Shenzong’s portrait shrine at Luoyang. On gengyin, southwestern peoples presented tribute. On guisi, with Xia torn by a child ruler and warlords like Yipo, frontier commanders were told to mobilize. On gengzi, Xinmou Qinzhan and Wenxixin received regimental commissioner posts at Yinzhou and Guazhou. On xinchou, Jingyuan reported a Xia strike on Sanchuan forts and a Song victory. On dingwei, Zhong Yi retook Taozhou and seized Gui Zhang Qingyijie.

On wuzi, thanksgiving rites were performed at Jingling Palace. On xinmao, western capital sentences dropped one grade and lesser offenders went free. On jihai, southwestern Dragon and Zhang Fan sent tribute. On gengzi, Zhong Yi and others were rewarded in rank, silver, and silk for recovering Taozhou.

Eleventh month, bingchen: Lianshui Army was restored. On gengshen, Gui Zhang was presented at Chongzheng Hall; though condemned to death, he could summon his son and followers to ransom himself. On yihai, severe snow and cold killed many; relief was increased and officials buried those without kin. Inner-hall commissioners were no longer examined for transfer into the civil track. On bingzi, prisoners were sentenced. Twelfth month, yiyou: armies and the poor received cash grants. On bingxu, Xinglong Festival: the emperor’s birthday was first celebrated at Zichen Hall. On jichou, bitter cold canceled the Jiaying Hall banquet. On renchen, ten thousand Uzheng Shengyan tribespeople crossed the Yellow River; envoys fed them and warned them not to abandon the north bank. On yiwei, a white rainbow crossed the sun. On renyin, the Yuan You Statutes, Edicts, and Forms were issued. That winter the Bian estuary was closed for the first time.

Year three, first month, jiyou new moon: no court audience was held. On gengxu, Guanghui Granary was reopened. On jiwei, the court worshipped at Jingling Palace. On gengshen, snow and cold spurred release of over five hundred thousand shi of western capital grain at reduced price. On xinyou, Zhuya commandery was told to win raw Li back through grace and allow repentant tribesmen to reform. On renxu, the Lantern Festival excursion was canceled. On renshen, Aligu came to court to beg forgiveness; frontier generals were barred from campaigning and surrender recruitment stayed abolished. On jiaxu, prisoners were sentenced.

On yiyou, a benevolent edict cut sentences one grade, freed lesser offenders, freed corvée laborers for a year, and aided destitute migrants. On bingxu, Hedong’s bitter cold prompted orders to sustain frontier garrisons. On guisi, the spring banquet was canceled. On yiwei, a white rainbow crossed the sun. On xinchou, Venus appeared in daylight. On yisi, Guangdong military supervisor Tong Zheng was executed for killing innocents on his own authority.

Third month, bingchen: Han Jiang died. On dingsi, the palace civil examination was held at Jiaying Hall. On wuwu, the military examination was held. On jisi, 1,122 Ministry of Rites graduates and examinees of other categories received degrees. On yihai, Zhang Cheng and others beat back a Xia raid on Dejing stockade.

Fourth month, wuyin: every prefecture and county was to report how the labor service law helped or harmed them. On xinsi, Lü Gongzhu became Minister of Works with joint state management; Lü Dafang became left grand councilor; Fan Chunren became right grand councilor. On renwu, Sun Gu, Liu Zhi, Wang Cun, Hu Zongyu, and Zhao Zhan took new council and Military Affairs posts. On guisi, annual quotas for officeholders’ promotions were set. On dingyou, Aligu sent tribute. On gengzi, each prefectural city was to raise a territorial garrison quota and forbid other levies on those men.

Fifth month, guihai: Prince Zongyuan of Handong died.

Sixth month, guimao: remonstrance and censor posts were again to require a year as metropolitan promotion circuit intendant. On xinchou, Xia raided Saimen stockade. On jiachen, five-colored clouds appeared.

Seventh month, wushen: Prince Jing Ying died. On the night of wuchen, the northeast blazed like day, then turned red with white streaks crossing the sky. On xinwei, Venus appeared in daylight. On guiyou, Zhong prefecture reported black grain raining at Linjiang’s Tujing town.

Eighth month, wuyin: Aligu sent tribute. On jimao, Yang Wang Ying was made Prince Xu. On xinsi, Jingmen Army was restored. On bingxu, the officials’ criminal-law examination was abolished. On dingyou, Qiyang tribes raided. On xinchou, registered prisoners dropped one grade and lesser offenders went free.

Ninth month, gengshen: imperial clansmen were barred from marrying inner-palace families. On yichou, Aligu was restored in rank and given a larger fief. Observation commissioners and above received perpetual estate fields. On dingmao, Jiaying Hall held the examination for eminent scholars able to remonstrate boldly.

Tenth month, bingxu: new stockades were abolished and Qiyang army disbanded. On wuxu, the southern and northern Palace Attendant offices were restored.

Eleventh month, jiachen: Fan Bailu and others were sent to inspect the rivers. On dingmao, Maluoba of the Dashi state sent tribute. Patrol-city troops were to receive fur coats every tenth month. Twelfth month, dingyou: Yu prefecture Liao tribesmen raided Xiaoxi. On renyin, a white rainbow crossed the sun.

Intercalary month, guimao new moon: the Yuan You Forms were issued. On jiachen, Fan Zhen presented cast pitch pipes, measures, and bells; the Ministry of Rites and Court of Imperial Sacrifices were to verify them. On wushen, chief ministers’ stipends were cut. On gengshen, acting posts were set for the six ministry directors. On bingyin, the Ministry of Personnel was to report on overlap among the six ministries. That year Srivijaya, Khotan, and southwestern tribes sent tribute. Empire-wide principal households numbered 2,134,733 with 28,533,934 adult males. Client households numbered 6,154,652 with 3,629,083 adult males. Capital death sentences: 2,915.

Year four, first month, renshen new moon: no audience; ministers and Liao envoys offered New Year felicitations at the gates. On bingzi, Liao envoys were feasted at Zichen Hall. On jiashen, Xia’s peace pact barred frontier generals from provocation.

Third month, jimao: an armillary sphere was constructed. Hu Zongyu left office. On dinghai, drought canceled the spring banquet. On jichou, great rites were barred from adding honorific titles. On xinmao, a daytime meteor appeared in the east. On guisi, prisoners were reviewed. On yiwei, outings to Qionlin Garden and Jinming Pool were canceled.

Fifth month, guiyou: the lecturing readerate was capped at three posts. Censor-in-chief Li Chang and attendant censor Sheng Tao were demoted for failing to impeach Cai Que. On xinsi, demoted academician Cai Que was made Grandee of Splendid Happiness. On dinghai, Cai Que was again demoted to Yingzhou registrar and exiled to Xinzhou. On dingyou, Khotan sent tribute.

Sixth month, jiachen: Fan Chunren and Wang Cun left office. On bingwu, Zhao Zhan joined Military Affairs; Han Zhongyan and Xu Jiang became left and right vice directors. On dingwei, Xia sent tribute. On guichou, Miaoli’s Banci Lengyi and Silin Limi presented tribute memorials from Khotan’s Black Khan and his kings. Seventh month, bingzi: the outer waterworks directorate was restored. On dingchou, Xiao Yin of Liao came for Kuncheng and was banqueted at Drooping Arch Hall. On gengchen, An Yan quit for filial mourning.

Eighth month, renyin: deputies were to grade magistrates on the Four Excellences and Three Bests, and Personnel yearly forwarded supervisors’ prefect reports. On xinyou, the grand empress dowager barred congratulatory memorials at future Bright Hall rites. Ninth month, wuyin: ritual abstention at Drooping Arch Hall. On jimao they offered at Jingling; on xinsi they feasted at the Bright Hall, pardoned the realm, ennobled officials, and gave gifts to commoners over ninety. On yiyou, Han Zhen and Fan Chunren received extra vessels and silks in differing amounts. On yiwei, seven rules for Shenzong’s civil and military service were promulgated and officials warned to obey.

Tenth month, xinchou: southwestern Cheng tribes brought tribute. On dingwei, Long Fan brought tribute. On wushen, Su Zhe presented Shenzong’s collected writings to Baowen Pavilion. On guichou, at Yingying Hall lecturers expounded the Precious Instructions of Three Reigns.

Eleventh month, gengwu: below Court Gentleman rank, jinshi stood left and others right. Peng Ruwu of the xidong grottoes presented native cloth. On guiwei, Sun Gu took the Military Commission, Liu Zhi the gate vice ministership, and Fu Yaoyu the Secretariat vice ministership. On yiyou, a red-yellow star blazed to earth with a fiery tail. On jichou, the grand empress dowager refused New Year audiences and took congratulatory memorials instead. On gengyin, Zhang Dun was demoted for illegal land purchases. On xinmao, the two-year sentence for transport and intendant officials who host brothel banquets was revised. Twelfth month, gengzi: Yelü Chang of Liao came for Xinglong and was banqueted at Drooping Arch Hall. On guichou, the court dances were renamed Awesomeness Fills the Four Seas and Transforming and Completing the World. On jiayin, Fuyan and other frontier garrisons were thinned and sent back to camp. On wuwu, with censor posts empty, the censor-in-chief and Two Departments each nominated two men. That year Xia, Miaoli, Arabia, and Malab sent tribute.

Second month, dingyou: vice-prefects’ memorial routes for promotion were abolished. On jihai, Xia returned 149 officials and soldiers taken at Yongle. On gengzi, ninety-two xidong leaders including Tian Zhongjin received provisional ranks. On xinchou, drought halted Yellow River repairs. On guimao, prayers rose at the sacred peaks and rivers and capital moat work stopped. On dingwei, sentences empire-wide were lightened and beating-grade prisoners freed. On gengxu, Wen Yanbo became grand preceptor, took Huguo and Shannan West commands, retired, and was promised full patent rites. On renzi, Yanbo declined the patent ceremony and was allowed. On dingmao, prayers went out to sacred peaks, rivers, palaces, temples, and shrines. On wuchen, the realm was pardoned. On gengwu, Shaanxi was told to resume casting small copper cash. On xinwei, he prayed at Heaven, Earth, temples, and altars. On yihai, he prayed at the imperial tombs.

Twelfth month, yisi: Fan Chunren’s resignation was refused. On jiayin, offices were reorganized on the model of the Tang Six Codes. On dingsi, Liao envoys came to mourn. One hundred thousand in cash and grain went to relieve migrants. On jisi, she was posthumously titled Empress Xuanren the Holy and Liege. That year the Yellow River poured into Deqing army and broke at Neihuang.
