62
Appraisal: Zhezong came to the throne very young and Xuanren ruled with him. At first he recalled Ma and Lü worthies, ended Green Sprouts, restored Ever-Normal Granaries, raised the able, and opened remonstrance—and hearts everywhere turned toward order. Yuanyou rule nearly matched Renzong’s. Yet Xining–Yuanfeng villains were not uprooted; slander soon restored them; under “continuing the legacy” they reversed prior policy, punished the good, filled the party registers, expelled gentlemen, and Song rule grew weaker. Alas—what a pity!
