Yuanfu 3, first month, jimao: Zhezong died. Empress Dowager Xiang drew the curtain and wept before the chief ministers: "Misfortune has struck the realm. The late emperor left no son. The throne must be settled at once." Zhang Dun spoke again: "Ritual law demands the younger uterine brother—Prince Jian." The Empress Dowager said: "Of Shenzong's sons, Prince Shen is eldest but blind in one eye; next in order stands Prince Duan." Dun answered in a harsh voice: "By years Shen is eldest; by law the uterine brother Jian is heir." The Empress Dowager said: "They are all Shenzong's sons—why split hairs? Next stands Prince Duan." Zeng Bu, Vice Director of Military Affairs, said: "Zhang Dun never took counsel with us; the Empress Dowager's word is wholly right." Cai Bian and Xu Jiang, in turn: "Let it follow the sacred edict." The Empress Dowager added: "The late emperor said Duan was blessed with fortune and years, humane and filial—unlike his brothers." At that Dun said no more. Prince Duan was called in and took the throne; Empress Dowager Xiang held regency over army and state.

On gengchen, the court pardoned what routine amnesties left out, raised every office one grade, and paid the armies. Song Yuan was sent to bear word of mourning to Liao. On xinsi, Zhezong's empress was titled Empress Yuanfu. On guiwei, Huizong's mother Chen was raised posthumously to Imperial Noble Consort. On jiashen, Zhang Dun was made mausoleum commissioner. On yiyou, Zhezong's bequests went to his closest ministers. On bingxu, Prince Shen Bian became Grand Tutor and Prince of Chen, with praise and bow without naming. On dinghai, Ladies Zhou and Xing of Manifest Favor became Noble Consorts; Lady Song of Worthy Favor became Virtuous Consort. On wuzi, Zhang Dun was made Special Advanced and Duke of Shen. On jichou, Prince Xin You was raised to Prince of Wei as Junior Tutor; Prince Jian Si to Prince of Cai and Prince Mu Xin to Prince of Ding, each as Junior Secretary. The eight added patrol shifts were abolished.

Second month, jihai: Huizong began to hear government. Zhezong's consort Lady Zhu was titled Sacred Felicity Imperial Noble Consort. On renyin, Southern Pacification King Li Qiande was made Inspector Grandee. On dingwei, Lady Wang of Shun State was made empress. On gengxu, Xiang Zonghui and Zongliang became military commissioners; every nephew of the Xiang clan still without office received one. On guisi, the throne first sat the Hall of Purple Brightness. On gengshen, Han Zhongyan became Gate Vice Director and Huang Lü Right Vice Director. On xinyou, Huizong's former princely house was named Dragon Virtue Palace. On jiazi, the Hall of Receiving the Pole was torn down. On bingyin, Wu Anxian and Zhu Xiaosun carried bequests to the Liao ruler. Third month, wuchen new moon: grand councillors, administrators, and attendants were each to name men fit for the censorate and remonstrance. On gengwu, Han Zhi and Cao Pu announced the accession to Liao. On xinwei, thirty-three ancestral princes including Guangji were posthumously enfeoffed, and forty-eight daughters as princesses. On jiashen, the Western Fan king Longzan became Hexi military commissioner, soon surnamed Zhao and named Huaide; Miaochuan chief Xiazheng took Huaiyuan. On jichou, with an eclipse due, the four capitals won mercy: one grade off every sentence, and freedom below exile. On gengyin, Zhao Pu's line was entered for favor. On xinmao, the court called for blunt speech. On guisi, Shixiong of Ningyuan became Chongxin military commissioner and Duke of Anding. On yiwei, jade offered by Wang Huai of Yongxing was refused.

Summer, fourth month, dingyou new moon: the sun was eclipsed. On jihai, circuit supervisors were to divide and settle cases. On jiachen, Han Zhongyan became Right Vice Director of State Affairs and Chancellery; Li Qingchen took the Gate; Jiang Zhiqi joined the Military Affairs bureau. On yisi, Cao Yi's line was entered for favor. On dingwei, Huizong's birthday became the Heaven's Blessing Festival. On jiyou, the eldest son Dan was born. On xinhai, a great amnesty wiped every official debt back through Yuanfu 2. On guichou, Lu Minqiu and others who answered the call for memorials were promoted. On yimao, Zhezong's posthumous title was sought at the suburban altar. On dingji, Fan Zhiren and others regained office and palace posts; Su Shi and his circle were moved to inner prefectures. On guihai, the bureau that sorted officials' memorials was abolished. On yichou, five hundred eighteen men took jinshi and other degrees from the Ministry of Rites list.

Fifth month, dingmao new moon: the penalty for clerks who lost papers on release was ended. On bingzi, the deposed Lady Meng was restored as Empress Yuanyou. On yiyou, Cai Bian left office. On jichou, thirty-three men including Wen Yanbo, Wang Gui, Sima Guang, Lü Gongzhu, Lü Dafang, and Liu Zhi were posthumously restored. On xinmao, the court returned posthumous favors owed Sima Guang and other retired ministers. On guisi, famine gripped Hebei, Hedong, and Shaanxi; frontier commissioners were to plan relief.

Sixth month, bingshen new moon: Liao sent Xiao Jinzhong, Xiao Anshi, and others to mourn Zhezong.

Seventh month, bingyin new moon: by Empress Dowager Xiang's edict, joint audience ended. On dingmao, Zhezong was titled Respectful Culture, Sagely Martial, Bright Filial and proclaimed to Heaven, Earth, temple, and altar. On wuchen, the treasure seals were offered at Blessing and Tranquillity Hall. On guiyou, as Xiang returned the regency, the empire won one grade of mercy and freedom below exile. On guiwei, Lu Dian and Li Sihui carried thanks to Liao. Mining commissioners on Shaanxi, Jing, and Chuan circuits and salt commissioners on Jiangxi, Guangdong, Hubei, Kui, Zi, and Chengdu were abolished. On xinmao, the son Dan was enfeoffed Duke of Han.

Eighth month, wuxu: wherever the people fell ill, circuit officials were to send physicians with medicine under supervision. On gengzi, the Western Splendid Numen Palace rose for Shenzong's spirit; Zhezong's hall was built west of it. On xinchou, two million strings from the inner treasury bought grain for Shaanxi stores. On renyin, Zhezong was laid in Yongtai Mausoleum. On bingwu, Dong Dunyi congratulated the Liao ruler's birthday and Lü Zhongfu the New Year. On wushen, Goryeo's King Xi sent envoys with words of comfort. On gengxu, Renzong's and Shenzong's temples were fixed never to be displaced. On wuwu, Prince Cai Si became Junior Tutor. On guihai, Zhezong's tablet entered the Ancestral Temple to the "Dance of Great Completion."

Tenth month, yiwei: Western Xia brought tribute. On bingshen, Cai Jing was sent to Yongxing and Zhang Dun demoted to Wuchang vice commissioner. On dingyou, Han Zhongyan became Left Vice Director of State Affairs and Gate Vice Director. On renyin, Zeng Bu became Right Vice Director of State Affairs and Chancellery. On yimao, Duanzhou was raised to Xingqing Army. On jiwei, the court forbade crooked scholarship, partisan bias, and rash changes that injured the state. On xinyou, the Bureau of Price Stabilization was abolished.

Eleventh month, dingmao: the court ordered the Six Dynasties Precious Admonitions compiled. Duanzhou won mercy: one grade off sentences, freedom for penal servitude and below. On gengwu, the court changed the era name for the coming year—Jianzhong. On wuyin, An Dian of the Observing Culture hall became Vice Director of Military Affairs. On gengchen, Huang Lü left office. On jichou, a Doctor of the Spring and Autumn was established. On xinmao, Shaanxi was told to use copper and iron coin together. Fan Chunli, Minister of Rites, became Right Vice Director. Twelfth month, jiawu: with Empress Dowager Xiang ill, the court prayed at abbeys, shrines, and sacred peaks. On wuxu, state grain was sold cheap to feed the people. On xinchou, prisoners were reviewed. On jiachen, the court ordered the Institutions of the Dynasty compiled. On wushen, every circuit won mercy: one grade off, freedom below exile. On wuwu, Liao envoys came for the New Year. That year, sixty-nine palace women were sent out.

Second month, bingshen: hail fell. On jihai, native troops on the Qin-Feng circuit were cut. On jiachen, the emperor took up personal rule. On yisi, a million cash each from the inner treasury and every circuit ever-normal fund went to Hebei frontier stores. On dingsi, Zhang Dun was demoted to Leizhou revenue aide.

Third month, jiazi: he first held court in Zichen Hall. On yichou, Liao envoy Xiao Gong announced Hongji’s death; Xie Jin and Shangguan Jun went to mourn while Huang Shi congratulated Yanxi’s accession. On dingchou, Zhao Huai’de of Hexi Army was made Huang prefect. On renwu, with an eclipse due, he left court, cut his meals, lowered crimes one grade empire-wide, and freed those at exile or below.

Fourth month, xinmao new moon: an eclipse occurred but was not seen. On jiawu, the late Grand Empress Dowager received the posthumous title Qinsheng Xiansu. On yiwei, the Empress Dowager was raised to the posthumous title Qinci. On dingyou, court meals were resumed. On renyin, circuit officials who failed to report doubtful cases were made punishable, while needless reports were exempted—written into law.

Fifth month, xinyou new moon: heavy hail fell. The Three Departments were told to cut staff and waste. On bingyin, Empresses Qinsheng Xiansu and Qinci were buried at Yongyu Mausoleum. On gengchen, Su Song died. On bingxu, the spirit tablets of Empresses Qinsheng Xiansu and Qinci entered the Ancestral Temple. On wuzi, the two capitals, Heyang, and Zhengzhou cut crimes one grade and remitted levies on mausoleum laborers.

Sixth month, gengyin new moon: Duke of Han Chan became honorary grand councilor and Prince of Jingzhao. On wushen, Xiang Zonghui became Prince of Yongyang and Xiang Zongliang Prince of Yongjia. On jiayin, Prince Hao’s son Xiaojian became Prince of Guangling and Yun’s son Xiaocan Prince of Xindu. On wuwu, Fan Chunli left office. On jiwei, the Statute on Homicide by Affray with Graded Circumstances was promulgated.

Seventh month, xinsi: inner circuits gained supplementary imperial-clan posts. On bingxu, An Yan left office. On dinghai, Jiang Zhiqi directed Military Affairs; Lu Dian became right vice premier; Zhang Shu joined Military Affairs as co-director.

Ninth month, jisi: circuits and prefectures were told to seek untapped revenue and cut redundant staff and waste, then report. On bingxu, Prince Fu died.

Tenth month, yiwei: Li Qingchen left office. On dingyou, the Heaven’s Blessing Festival brought the first birthday felicitations from ministers and the Liao envoy in Chuigong Hall.

Eleventh month, gengshen: Lu Dian became left vice premier and Wen Yi right vice premier. On renxu, Sherosak became Xiping military commissioner and Miaochuan chief. On xinwei, the emperor issued his southern-suburb sacrifice hymns. On wuyin, offerings were made at Jingling Palace. On jimao, the court feasted at the Ancestral Temple. On gengchen, Heaven and Earth were sacrificed to at the Round Altar and the realm was pardoned. Zhangxin Army became Xingren Army and Zhaode Army became Longde Army. The next year’s reign title was changed. Twelfth month, renchen: Prince Bian of Chen was granted the privilege of unnamed address in edicts. On guimao, Shenzong’s consort Lady Wu was raised to Noble Consort. On bingwu, Shenzong’s spirit portrait was enshrined in Daming Hall of Jingling Western Palace. On dingwei, he went to the palace for the rite. On jiyou, a grace edict in the four capitals cut crimes one grade and freed those at penal servitude or below. That year Liao presented leftover goods. Hedong shook; the capital region had locusts; the Yangzi, Huai, two Zhes, Hunan, and Fujian suffered drought.

Chongning 1, spring, dingchou: Taiyuan and ten prefectures shook; families of the dead received graded cash grants.

Third month, dingsi: Zhezong’s spirit portrait was enshrined in Baoqing Hall of Jingling Western Palace. On wuwu, he went to the palace for the rite. On renxu, Prince Si of Ding was made Grand Preceptor. On renshen, he visited Prince Si’s mansion.

Fifth month, dingsi: Mars entered the Dipper. On gengshen, Han Zhongyan left office. On jisi, Xiazheng died. On gengwu, restored Sima Guang was cut to Right Policy Grandee and Wen Yanbo to heir-apparent grand preceptor; the rest lost rank in graded steps. On xinwei, every official from Attendant-in-Ordinary up was told to name two capable administrators. On yihai, a rear-garden eunuch who sought gold-foil palace decoration was dismissed. On bingzi, Yuanyou officials already demoted were declared closed to further inquiry or memorializing. On wuyin, Empress Qincheng was buried at Yongyu Mausoleum. On jimao, Lu Dian left office. On gengchen, Xu Jiang took the Gate, Wen Yi the Chancellery, Cai Jing the left vice premiership, and Zhao Tingzhi the right.

Sixth month, jichou: Empress Qincheng’s spirit tablet entered the Ancestral Temple. On renchen, the Western Capital, Heyang, and Zhengzhou cut crimes one grade and remitted levies on mausoleum laborers. On guimao, the six ministry directors were allowed solo audience when memorializing. On jiyou, Venus shone by day. On renzi, Yu prefecture became Gong prefecture. On guichou, Shenzong’s official system was ordered revised on the model of the Tang Six Offices Canon. Bo Yi was enfeoffed Marquis of Pure Grace and Shu Qi Marquis of Humane Grace.

Intercalary jiayin new moon: Zhezong’s spirit-portrait hall was renamed Chongguang. On xinyou, prisoners were reviewed. On renxu, Zeng Bu left office. On jiazi, each intendant and commissioner could name one prefectural or county official of outstanding governance. On renwu, Li Qingchen was posthumously demoted to Wu’an Army vice commissioner. On guiwei, intendants and commissioners could each name one junior commissioner or local official fit for command.

Seventh month, jiashen new moon: Longevity Palace was built for Mars worship. On bingxu, provincial, censorate, temple, commission, intendant, and prefect posts were fixed at three-year terms. On wuzi, Cai Jing became Right Vice Director of State Affairs and Chancellery. On jichou, the Yuanyou laws were burned. On jiawu, a Discussion Office was set up at the Department of State Affairs. Maritime trade offices were set up at Hangzhou and Mingzhou. On gengzi, Zhang Shu left office. On jiachen, Kaifeng was told to aid those crushed or drowned when rain wrecked houses. On xinhai, the Spring and Autumn doctorate was abolished.

Eighth month, yimao: Prince Xuan was renamed Huan and Prince Huan was renamed Kai. On yichou, acting vice-minister posts were abolished. On xinwei, Relief Halls were set up for the poor and sick, and every prefecture and county was told to do the same. On jiaxu, empire-wide schools were ordered to advance scholars, and an outer academy was built south of the capital. On bingzi, sons and younger brothers of Sima Guang and twenty others were barred from capital office. On jimao, Zhao Tingzhi became left vice premier and Zhang Shangying right vice premier.

Ninth month, wuzi: the capital opened a Dwelling-and-Supporting Hall for widowers, widows, orphans, and the solitary, funded from heirless estates. On yiwei, Yuanfu 3 memorialists were registered in orthodox and heterodox upper, middle, and lower grades. On dingyou, officials who had urged restoring the Yuanyou empress or deposing the Yuanfu empress were punished—Han Zhongyan and Zeng Bu demoted, Li Qingchen posthumously sent to Leizhou, Huang Lü to Qi vice commissioner, and Zeng Zhao with seventeen others banished. On jihai, one hundred twenty Yuanyou and late-Yuanfu figures—from Wen Yanbo and Su Shi to Qin Guan, Zhang Shiliang, and Wang Xiank—were blacklisted and inscribed in the emperor’s hand at Duanli Gate. On gengzi, forty-one Yuanfu memorialists from Zhong Shimei down were classed orthodox and promoted; and more than five hundred from Fan Rouzhong down were classed heterodox and punished in graded degrees. Shimei already dead, he was granted posthumous office and one son was appointed. On renyin, Zeng Bu was demoted to Wutai Army vice commissioner. On jiachen, an edict ordered officials reinstated after Yuanfu 3 and Jianzhong Jingguo 1 demotions to surrender their original demotion patents to the Ministry of Personnel. Tenth month, guihai: Jiang Zhiqi left office. On wuchen, demoted officials on palace appointment were forbidden to live in the same prefecture. On jiaxu, at the urging of Qian Yi, Shi Yu, Zuo Fu, Cai Jing, Xu Jiang, Wen Yi, Zhao Tingzhi, and Zhang Shangying, the Yuanyou Empress was stripped of her title and sent back to Yaohua Palace. On bingzi, Liu Fengshi and twenty-six others lost temple salaries for Yuanfu-end ties to the reform faction. On wuyin, Cai Bian became Director of Military Affairs.

Eleventh month, yiyou: Shaozhou reported Xidong administrator Yang Guangxian of Xizhou had submitted. On wuzi, Graceful Consort Zheng was advanced to Worthy Consort. On xinmao, Hebei Relief Halls were established. On guisi, clan directorates for both western and southern capitals and the Hall for Honoring the Clan were set up. On wuxu, Illustrious Counsel academicians and attendants were instituted. On wushen, Prince Kai was made Kaifu Yitong Sansi and Prince of Gaomi. On jiyou, a three-year review law for directors, supervisors, and bureau officers was enacted. Twelfth month, guichou: abandoning Huangzhou was tried—Han Zhongyan to Chongxin deputy commissioner, Zeng Bu to Hezhou registrar, An Tao to Ningguo deputy commissioner, Fan Chunli to outside service at Nanjing. On gengshen, five-count cash was cast. On xinyou, Zhezong’s son Prince Mao of Deng was posthumously made heir apparent as Dedicated and Lamented. On dingchou, an edict forbade heretical doctrines, wicked practices outside the sages’ books, and all Yuanyou academic policies and governance. That year locusts ravaged the capital region, eastern Jing, Hebei, and Huainan. Drought afflicted Jiang, Zhe, Xihe, Zhang, Quan, Tan, Heng, and Chen and Xinghua Army. Yao raiders from Chen and Yuan struck inward. Seventy-six palace women were released.

Chongning 2, spring, first month, xinsi new moon. On yiyou, Ren Boyu, Chen Guan, Gong Fu, and Zou Hao were sent to Lingnan; Ma Juan and eight others were scattered to distant prefectures. Jingnan prefect Shu Dan crushed the Chen–Yuan Yao, recovered Cheng and Hui, renamed Cheng Jingzhou and Hui Shizhu county. On renchen, Wen Yi died. On yisi, both Jing–Hu circuits received a partial amnesty for the recovered territory. On bingwu, circuit commissioners were told to review prisoners in the cold. On dingwei, Cai Jing became Left Vice Director of State Affairs and concurrent Vice Director of the Chancellery.

Second month, xinhai: Anhua Man raiders were beaten by Guangxi commissioner Cheng Jie. On renzi, officials were sent to survey Hunan north and south for timber and plants for capital works. On jiayin, the Yuanfu Empress became Empress Dowager Chongen. On xinyou, the Palace Directorate was established. On guihai, Zhezong’s portrait was installed at western-capital Huisheng Palace and Yingtian Cloister. On bingzi, tea markets were set up on every circuit.

Third month, renwu: Renzong’s Honored Consort Zhang became Worthy Consort. On yiyou, western-capital sentences were reduced one degree. An edict barred faction members’ children from court, along with favor-seekers, dismissed outsiders angling for posts, and punished or suspended officials. On dinghai, presented scholars were examined at the Hall for Assembling the Worthy. On guimao, 538 metropolitan graduates were named; orthodox memorialists rose in rank and heterodox ones were struck off.

Fourth month, jiayin: each attendant was told to name two men he knew. On yimao, Yutian sent tribute. On dingmao, portraits of Lü Gongzhu, Sima Guang, Lü Dafang, Fan Chunren, Liu Zhi, Fan Baimian, Liang Tao, and Wang Yansou at Jingling’s western hall were ordered destroyed. On jihai, the realm was amnestied for the first Jingling audience. On yihai, Tang Mirror and collected works of the three Su, Qin, Huang, and others were ordered destroyed. On wuyin, Zhao Tingzhi became Vice Director of the Secretariat, Zhang Shangying Left Vice Director, Wu Juhou Right Vice Director, and An Dun associate director of military affairs. Wang Gui’s posthumous title was revoked, Cheng Yi’s credentials were hunted down and burned, and his books were put under circuit watch.

Fifth month, xinsi: Worthy Consort Zheng became Graceful Consort. On guimao, Prince Chen Bian was made Grand Preceptor. On bingxu, Zeng Bu was demoted to Lianzhou registrar. On jihai, Prince Ji was enfeoffed Duke of Chu. On bingwu, Yuanfu Empress Liu was installed as Empress Dowager. Sixth month, renzi: Lady Wang was installed as empress. On gengshen, an edict ordered Yuanfu-end memorialist graduates—mostly slanderers—into new schools under the university Repentance Lodge rule; after a year the reformed might test again, the rest banished far off. On renxu, prisoners were reviewed. That month the Central Temple of the Great One burned. Huangzhou was recovered.

Seventh month, jimao: the Hanlin Academy burned. On xinsi, Huangzhou’s recovery brought Cai Jing three ranks and Cai Bian and others two. On renwu, a white rainbow crossed the sun. On jiashen, Xihe–Lan–Hui received a grace edict cutting sentences one degree and freeing those below exile. On gengyin, Zeng Zhao was demoted to Puzhou deputy commissioner. On xinmao, memorialist graduates still in the Three Colleges were sent home. On dingyou, imperial affines and clan were barred from chief-councilor posts by standing rule. On yisi, children of the demoted were barred from posts in the capital and its prefecture.

Eighth month, dingwei new moon: abandoning Huangzhou was retried—Han Zhongyan to Cizhou, An Tao to Qizhou, Fan Chunli to Jingjiang, and Jiang Zhiqi lost three ranks. On wushen, Zhang Shangying was dismissed. On xinyou, Zhang Shangying was entered on the Yuanyou faction list.

Ninth month, xinsi: imperial clan were forbidden to marry Yuanyou-traitor descendants. On gengyin, Prince Shu was enfeoffed Duke of Wu. An edict gave heterodox memorialists of county rank and above outside temple posts and barred selection candidates from promotion or county magistracies. On renchen, the Medical School was established. On guisi, every commandery was ordered to build a Chongning Temple. On xinchou, the Personnel Ministry’s seven ranks from Bearer of Uprightness to Candidate for Office were revised. Every circuit commissioner and prefect was ordered to erect a Yuanyou Traitor Stele in his main hall. On jiachen, commanderies and counties were ordered to keep the soil-and-grain sacrifices. Eleventh month, gengchen: teaching Yuanyou learning or policy in groups was to be reported and punished without mercy.

Twelfth month, guihai: Emperor Xuanzu and Empress Zhaoxian were moved back in the temple line. On bingyin, the six vice ministers were to grade bureau officials annually in three tiers and report. That year locusts struck every circuit. Zuanfu’s Yang Shengtong, Rong’s Yang Shengtian, and Shaozhou’s Huang Cong submitted.

Chongning 3, spring, jimao: the Anhua Man surrendered. On wuzi, heterodox memorialists were barred from the capital. On wuzi, ten-count cash was cast. On renchen, county-school quotas were raised. On jiawu, Cai Jing’s son You was granted jinshi by birth. On guimao, Venus appeared by day. On jiachen, the Nine Cauldrons were cast.

Second month, bingwu: Graceful Consort Zheng became Precious Consort. Qian Yi and eight others were dismissed for wrongly revising the Yuanfeng corvée statutes. On dingwei, Louze Garden was established. On jiyou, Wang Gui and Zhang Dun were listed on a separate register like the Yuanyou faction. An edict let attendance and remonstrance masters stand by when the emperor held court in the rear hall. On renzi, Duke of Chu Ji was made Kaifu Yitong Sansi and Prince of Nanyang. Third month, xinsi: the Brocade and Embroidery Court was established. On dinghai, the Round Prison was built for violent robbers reprieved from death. On jiawu, Empress Qincheng’s tablet was set above Empress Qinci’s. On xinchou, fire broke out in the inner palace.

Fourth month, yisi: the four capitals received a fire grace edict cutting sentences one degree and pardoning those below exile. On yimao, Zong was recovered and made Longyou Protectorate-General. On xinyou, Ji was moved to the Le’an princedom. Kuozhou was recovered. On yichou, the Deliberation Office was abolished. On jisi, Shaanxi received a partial amnesty. On renshen, Ji died.

Fifth month, wuyin: Kaifeng’s acting prefect was abolished and a governor, chief governor, and junior governors were set up. The six ministries were reordered Personnel–Works, staffs enlarged, and clerk titles were brought in line with the Tang Six Canons. On jimao, Zong and Kuo’s recovery made Cai Jing Acting Minister of Works and Duke of Jia. On gengchen, Xu Jiang, Zhao Tingzhi, Wu Juhou, An Dun, and Cai Bian each gained three ranks. On jiashen, Zong became Xining prefecture with a Longyou military commission. On xinchou, circuit commissioners who had offered gold for palace building were dismissed.

Sixth month, renyin new moon: Shenning and Yuanfeng merit officials were painted in the Hall for Illustrious Counsel. On guiyou, Wang Anshi was enshrined in Confucius’s temple. On bingwu, prefectural schools still lacking were added. On renzi, calligraphy, painting, and mathematics schools were established. Champa sent tribute. On wuwu, Yuanyou, Yuanfu, and heterodox lists were merged into 309 names carved at court; the rest were cleared and might not be impeached again. On xinyou, the Imperial Medical Service was restored. On guihai, prisoners were reviewed. On yichou, officials were barred from out-of-jurisdiction memorials and favor-scrambling on pain of censorial impeachment.

Seventh month, guiyou: Graceful Consort Wang became Virtuous Consort. On gengchen, great rites were denied honorific titles and ministers were forbidden congratulatory tables. On xinmao, the Square Fields law took effect.

Eighth month, gengzi: circuit prefects and vice commissioners gained the title “in charge of school affairs.” On renyin, heavy rain wrecked houses and the dead were ordered collected and buried. On jiachen, Cai Jing submitted Shenzong’s Veritable Records. On bingwu, Xu Jiang was dismissed.

Ninth month, yihai: Zhao Tingzhi became Vice Director of the Chancellery, Wu Juhou of the Secretariat, Zhang Kangguo Left Vice Director, and Deng Xunwu Right Vice Director. On renchen, every prefectural school was to add lodges for martial talent.

Tenth month, xinyou new moon: heavy hail fell. On dingwei, Worthy Consort Zhang died. On bingchen, officials were ordered to compile Six Dynasties merit ministers. On wuwu, Xia entered Jingyuan, besieged Pingxia, and raided Zhenrong Army. On gengshen, Wang Hou reported Hexi commissioner Zhao Huaide and others had surrendered. On jisi, the Nine Temples were set up and Yizu and Xuanzu were restored. On gengwu, Precious Consort Xing died.

Eleventh month, jiaxu: he visited the Imperial University and sixteen “determined” scholars, then the Imperial Academy, granting fourth-rank robes to Wu Yin and Jiang Jing and graded favors to the staff. On bingxu, Prince Qi was enfeoffed Duke of Ji. On dinghai, recruitment was routed entirely through schools; dispatch and metropolitan exams were ended while the field followed old forms. On guisi, Shenzong’s and Zhezong’s posthumous titles were greatly lengthened with new honorific strings. On jiawu, offerings were presented at Jingling Palace. On yiwei, the Ancestral Temple received the feast offering. On bingshen, Heaven was sacrificed to at the Circular Mound and the realm was amnestied. Xingren and Longde armies became prefectures and the old Zhangxin and Zhaode commissions were restored. Twelfth month, yisi: Tongyuan Army was advanced to Gongzhou. On wuwu, Prince Chen Bian was excused from hurrying at court entry. That year locusts struck every circuit. Sixty-two palace women were released. Guangxi’s Li-cave Yang Shengmian and others submitted.
