Chongning 4, spring, gengwu new moon: Xihe-Lan-Hui circuit became Xihe-Lan-Huang. On bingxu, the court fortified Xige. On renchen, Huizong ordered greedy and cruel circuit supervisors tried for their crimes. On bingshen, the capital circuit gained new transport and judicial commissioners. Cai Bian left office. The court set military academy law. On dingyou, Qin-Feng tribes surrendered Bang, Pan, and Die. Tong Guan, a palace eunuch, took Xihe-Lan-Huang and Qin-Feng as pacification commissioner.

Second month, yisi: Yumu was fortified. On jiyou, three guard commands were opened to sons and grandsons of the meritorious and the imperial kin who already held rank. On jiayin, Zhang Kangguo headed Military Affairs, Liu Kui shared the bureau, and He Zhizhong took the left vice directorship. On yimao, the equal-field law went out to the circuits. On gengshen, western commanders who won Qiang allies won the same bounty as for kills. On renxu, Zhao became Qingyuan Army. On jiazi, hail struck the capital. On yichou, Three Guards outer commanders became Vice Ministers.

Intercalary month, renshen: Yuanfeng examination and case law returned. Prefectures and counties were to mirror the Six Boards with six desks each. On jiashen, Shaanxi, Hedong, Hebei, and Jingxi gained mints for tin-adulterated two-cash iron coin. On jichou, at the Meridian Gate Zhao Huai surrendered and took Gande command and the title Prince of Anhua. On renchen, Xihe-Lan-Huang won a partial amnesty.

Third month, renyin: the Qinghai stud farm was founded. On jiachen, Zhao Tingzhi became Right Vice Director and Chancellery vice director. On bingwu, Wangkou stockade was raised to Huaiyuan Army. On gengxu, Lü Huiqing was sent home. On wuwu, Yin prefecture returned to the Song. On yichou, village tutors were confined to classics, Masters, and histories—nothing else. On dingmao, Zangke and Yelang chiefs ceded territory. That month, Xia struck Saimen stockade.

Fourth month, xinwei: Liao sent Xiao Liang to recover Xia's lost ground and a Song pullback. On wuyin, Xia hit Linzong stockade. On xinsi, frontier couriers were barred from army and border business. On jichou, Xia raided Shunning; Liu Yanqing, second Yan-Yan deputy, broke them; then struck Huang's northern Fan market; Prefect Xin Shuxian and others beat them back.

Fifth month, wushen: fathers, brothers, and sons of Yuanyou men could serve again. On renzi, Lin Shu carried the court's thanks to Liao. Zhang Jixian was styled Master of Empty Stillness. On guichou, transport inspection and audit ended. On xinyou, officials were sent out in sections to settle cases.

Sixth month, bingzi: Jiechi salt returned to state hands. Champa brought tribute. On dingchou, the court reviewed prisoners. On xinsi, Shaanxi and Hedong corvée was ended. On jiashen, Xihe, Shaanxi, Hedong, and Jingxi won partial amnesty. On wuzi, Zhao Tingzhi left office.

Seventh month, bingshen new moon: Three Capital Directorate schools were cut; each circuit got one Vice Director of Studies. On xinchou, the Mars Altar was founded. Four Assist circuits were named: Yingchang south, Xiangyi east, Zheng west, Cao north. On jiayin, Huizong seized Yuanyou ministers' tomb temples. On dingsi, memorial-writing exiles came home. Zeng Xiaoguang, Minister of Revenue, left for Hang prefecture—his treasury was empty of coin and silk.

Eighth month, wuchen: Virtuous Consort Wang became Pure Consort. On gengwu, Wang, Jiang, and Gu submitted; two stream-and-cave superintendents were named and Huaiyuan became Ping. On bingzi, the Eastern Assist became Gong prefecture. On jiashen, the Nine Cauldrons were set in the Palace of Nine Completenesses. On yiyou, Huizong poured libations at the palace. On xinmao, the new music was titled Dasheng and given its own bureau. On renchen, Liu Zhengfu went to Liao.

Ninth month, jihai: the empire was pardoned. On yisi, Yuanyou exiles were shifted stage by stage toward home—never into the capital circuit. Capital and Three-Roads baojia were ordered to drill in the slack between harvests. On yimao, thirty-five upper-academy men took jinshi. On bingchen, only chief ministers could be made Special Advanced.

Tenth month: rain since the seventh month still had not ceased. On jiashen, Shaosheng and Yuanfu legal clarifications went empire-wide; penal models went to Justice and the Court of Review. On dinghai, Wugang county became an army. On wuzi, memorial-writing jinshi still without office had a hundred days to confess and escape penalty. On renchen, a sunspot showed.

Eleventh month, wuxu: Prince Shiyong of Anding died. On bingchen, every circuit gained a superintendent of studies. On jiwei, Zhang Dun died. Twelfth month, guiyou: Gong became Baoqing Army. On jiashen, Yun and Ge were carved from Ping. That year flood drowned Su, Hu, and Xiu; the hungry received grain. Taizhou reported grain with double ears on one stalk.

Chongning 5, spring, wuxu: a comet rose in the west, tail across the heavens. On gengzi, Jiang-Lake-Huai-Zhe ever-normal granaries returned. On jiachen, Wu Juhou took the Chancellery and Liu Kui the Department of State Affairs. On yisi, the comet drove Huizong from the hall, cut his table, and called for blunt counsel. The Yuanyou faction stele was torn down. Re-banished men regained their registers; impeachment of them was forbidden. On dingwei, Venus shone by day; the empire was pardoned and every faction ban ended. Equal-field work was halted for now. On wushen, attendants were to file sealed memorials. On jiyou, annual prefectural tribute to the palace ended. On gengxu, Chongning demotions were partly reversed, living or dead, and every exile sent home. On xinhai, Huizong returned to the hall and full rations. On renzi, the walled-prison law ended. On dingsi, calligraphy, painting, calculation, and medicine schools closed. On renxu, calligraphy, painting, and calculation schools reopened.

Second month, jiazi new moon: circuit supervisors were to list the people's hardships. On bingyin, Cai Jing left the council for Grandee of the Palace and commissioner of Central Grand Unity. Zhao Tingzhi, University Fellow, became Special Advanced, Right Vice Director, and Chancellery vice director. On gengwu, Hanlin, both provinces, and the Archive were reserved for jinshi men. On renshen, redundant posts were cut and medical officers holding palace sinecures were removed. Pagan brought tribute. On dingchou, Huizong's brush and hand edicts were printed in volumes for court and provinces. Disobedient counties faced supervisor impeachment; lax supervisors faced cross-ministry audit.

Fifth month, dingwei: the Jiyuan Calendar went out. On xinhai, the son Xu was enfeoffed Duke of Lu. On yimao, special recruitment ended and Yuanfeng selection rules returned in full.

Sixth month, guihai: circuit supervisors gained mutual inspection; shielding brought punishment and Censorate impeachment. Ge prefecture was reduced to a subordinate prefecture. On jiazi, recluses were sought; supervisors were to vet and recommend them while the Censorate checked favoritism. On dingmao, chief ministers were told to draft southeast defense plans. On renshen, prisoners were reviewed.

Seventh month, gengyin new moon: an eclipse was due but did not occur. On renyin, the next year’s reign title was changed.

Ninth month, xinchou: Henan reported auspicious grain and fungus on one stalk.

Tenth month, jimao: Cao prefecture became Kaide prefecture. On gengchen, Kaide received a grace edict cutting sentences one degree and freeing those below penal servitude.

Third month, dingyou: Zhao Tingzhi left office. He Zhizhong took the Chancellery, Deng Xunwu the Secretariat, Liang Zimei the left vice directorship, and Zhu E the right. On jiachen, the Eight Conducts degree category was opened. On guichou, Zhao Tingzhi died.

Fifth month, jichou: the son Yi was enfeoffed Duke of Yang. Wu Chu and Wu Mou were executed for plotting with the sorcerer Zhang Huaisu. Lü Huiqing was demoted to Qizhou deputy military commissioner. On gengyin, Deng Xunwu left office. On jiawu, the new court music was issued empire-wide. On guimao, circuit commanders and supervisors were barred from Yuanyou scholars and men of divergent views. Anhua frontier raids brought more troops to Guangxi for punitive action. On yisi, the son Gou was born.

Eighth month, yimao: Zeng Bu died. On dingsi, the son Gou was enfeoffed Duke of Shu. On gengshen, Xu Churen became right vice director and Lin Shu co-director of Military Affairs. On jisi, twenty-six Huai, sea, Wu, and Chu prefectures received a grace edict cutting sentences one degree and freeing those below exile.

Ninth month, gengyin: Xianlie Abbey was built at Chen Bridge. On jiyou, Ancestor Xizu received a greatly augmented posthumous title and the court offered at Jingling Palace. On gengxu, the court feasted at the Ancestral Temple. On xinhai, the Bright Hall rites were held and the realm was pardoned. Yongxing Army was raised to a great metropolitan prefecture. Zhang Yuan was banished to a sea island for violating the law. Li Jingzhi and three others were banished to Lingnan for hedging in their memorials.

Intercalary month, bingxu: Lin Shu became left vice director and Zheng Juzhong co-director of Military Affairs. On yiwei, prefects and magistrates were graded chiefly by household registers. Gui became a great metropolitan prefecture and Zhen became Jinghai Army command. On renyin, kingfisher feather ornament was banned. On yisi, Taiyuan and Yan were both raised to great metropolitan prefectures.

Eleventh month, renzi new moon: the sun was eclipsed; Cai Jing claimed it fell short of prediction and led ministers in congratulation. On yichou, Talisman Keeper posts were established. On jisi, Ying became Hejian prefecture and Yinghai Army command. On wuyin, Nandan prefect Mo Gongyun surrendered. Xu Churen left office to mourn his mother. Twelfth month, gengyin: Cai Jing became Grand Marshal and He Zhizhong’s party rose two ranks. On guisi, Jiangning, Jingnan, Yang, Hang, Yue, Hong, Fu, Tan, Guang, and Gui became marshal prefectures. Qiannan circuit was established. On dingyou, the Kaifeng prefectural school opened. On jihai, Lady Qiao of Graceful Appearance became Virtuous Consort. The Bi River canal was opened. That year Qin-Feng suffered drought. Jingdong flooded and the Yellow River burst; relief officials went out and flood households received rent loans. Luzhou reported beans raining from the sky. Ting and Huai saw auspicious clouds. The Yellow River ran clear at Qianning Army and Tong prefecture. Khotan and Western Xia brought tribute. Fuzhou Yi leaders Luo Shiye and Luo Wengui submitted.

Year 2, spring, renzi new moon: Daqing Hall received the Eight Treasures; the realm was pardoned and every official rose one rank. Cai Jing memorialized to congratulate the portents. On yimao, Lady Liu of Graceful Ceremony became Virtuous Consort. On jiwei, Cai Jing became Grand Preceptor. Tong Guan became military commissioner and kept the pacification post. On gengshen, Prince of Wei Hou became Prince of Yan and Prince of Deng Si Prince of Yue, both Grand Marshal; Prince of Jingzhao Huan became Prince of Ding and Prince of Gaomi Kai Prince of Jia, both Sikong; Duke of Wu Shu became Prince of Jian’an, Duke of Ji Qi Prince of Wen’an, Duke of Chu Xu Prince of Ankang, Duke of Yang Yi Prince of Jiyang, and Duke of Shu Gou Prince of Guangping, all Grandees of the Palace. On jiazi, Shenzong’s Virtuous Consorts Song and Liu became Gentle Consorts and Worthy Consort Qiao became Virtuous Consort. On gengwu, Zhongsun became Prince of Qi’an, Zhongyu Prince of Huayang, Xiaochuan Prince of Jinkang, and Xiaocan Prince of Yuzhang, all Grandees of the Palace; Zhongzeng became Prince of Xin’an, Zhonghu of Pu’an, Zhonggui of Xian’an, Zhongpu of Tong’an, and Zhongmi of Huai’an. On wuyin, Xiang Zonghui became Prince of Handong and Xiang Zongliang Grandee of the Palace. Zhongsun died. Bandits rose in Hedong and the north.

On jihai, Ande military commissioner Qian Jingzhen became Grandee of the Palace. On gengxu, Lady Wei of Handsome Fairness became Lady of Cultivated Countenance.

Third month, gengshen: the Golden Register Spirit Treasure Ritual Canon was issued empire-wide. On jiazi, the son Cai was enfeoffed Duke of Wei. On yihai, the son Mo was enfeoffed Duke of Zhen. On wuyin, thirteen Upper College students passed the examination. Qianning Army was raised to Qing prefecture. An edict required circuit commissioners yearly to send two prefects and four magistrates from their circuits to the Three Departments for review. Fourth month, jiachen: Taozhou was recovered.

Fifth month, gengxu new moon: the sun was eclipsed. On xinhai, prisoners were reviewed. Taozhou’s recovery brought Cai Jing a jade belt and Tong Guan an honorary Sikong post while he remained Pacification Commissioner. On jiayin, annual circuit tribute offerings were restored. On renxu, Xige prince’s son Zang Zheng Puge surrendered and Jishi Army was recovered. On wuchen, one of Cai Jing’s kin was ennobled and serving officials gained one rank.

Sixth month, yiyou: Fu Yi land became Zhen prefecture. On jiawu, Pingxia fort was made Huaide Army. On yiwei, the directorate’s six palace services, the Mathematics School, the Grand Steward’s Bureau, and the Hanlin Protocol Office were all assigned to the Six Investigations.

Eighth month, xinsi: the Yellow River flooded at Xing, ruining homes, and families flooded again were aided. On bingshen, Liang Zimei left the vice directorship for Yan prefecture. On jihai, Baozhou’s Dunzong Hall was set up.

Ninth month, xinhai: Lin Shu became vice director of state affairs and Yu Shen left vice director. On renxu, Xiang Zonghui was demoted to grand mentor of the heir apparent and retired. On renshen, the son Zhi was enfeoffed Duke of Wu. On guiyou, Empress Wang died. Xiang Zonghui was stripped of rank and enfeoffment. On bingzi, Xihe–Lan–Huang, Qinfeng, and Yongxing received a partial amnesty. Eleventh month, dingwei new moon: Venus appeared by day. On yichou, the late empress received the posthumous title Tranquil Harmony.

Twelfth month, renyin: the Tranquil Harmony Empress was buried at Yongyu. That year the Yellow River cleared at Tong. Seventy-seven palace women were dismissed from service. Khotan and Western Xia presented tribute. Fu Yi leaders Ren Yingju and Yang Wengui and Hunan Yao chief Yang Zaiguang came in.

In the third year, first month, yimao: the Tranquil Harmony Empress’s tablet was installed in the side temple. On jiwei, the two capitals, Heyang, and Zheng cut sentences one degree and remitted mausoleum corvée. On dingmao, Fu Yi land became Cheng prefecture. On jiaxu, Huang was raised to Xiangde Army with a military commission.

Second month, bingzi new moon: Yang Wengui of Bozhou surrendered his land, which became Zunyi Army. On dingchou, Han Zhongyan retired.

Third month, bingwu: a law on overseas merchants’ boundary violations was set. On gengxu, the palace examination was held in the Hall for Gathering Excellence. On xinyou, Sichuan prefects were ordered chosen only from inland appointees. On renxu, southern Qian was incorporated into Guangxi. On yichou, 685 Ministry of Rites graduates received passage and appointment. On renshen, Zhang Kangguo died.

Fourth month, wuyin: Lin Shu was dismissed. On wuzi, Graceful Consort Liu was advanced to Noble Consort. On guisi, Zheng Juzhong became director of military affairs and Guan Shiren associate director. On guimao, Yu Shen became vice director of state affairs, Xue Ang left vice director, and Liu Zhengfu right vice director.

Fifth month, yisi new moon: Meng Yi presented a painted hexagram, warning the Song would mid-wane and urging a new era name, new titles, and changed customs to ward it off. The emperor took offense and had him banished far away. On bingchen, the Imperial Academy feast was ordered to use elegant music. On dingsi, prisoners were reviewed. On wuchen, a great hailstorm struck. On xinwei, Virtuous Consort Qiao was advanced to Noble Consort.

Sixth month, jiaxu new moon: compilation of the Music Treatise was ordered. Guan Shiren was dismissed. On dingchou, Cai Jing was dismissed. On xinsi, He Zhizhong became special advancement holder, left vice director of state affairs, and concurrent vice director of the chancellery. Lu Yi territory was divided into Chun and Zi prefectures. On gengyin, the Yellow River flooded at Ji.

Seventh month, dingwei: exiles except Yuanyou factionists and temple offenders were ordered re-employed. On bingchen, the chief tea monopoly office was abolished and tea affairs returned to Revenue in the capital and transport commissioners in the circuits.

Eighth month, yiyou: the son Pu was enfeoffed Duke of Yong. On jichou, collateral Prince of Pu Zonghan died. On jiawu, Zhongzeng was made Kaifu Yitong Sansi and succeeded as Prince of Pu. On bingshen, Rong was raised to Qingyuan Army with a military commission. On jihai, Han Zhongyan died.

Ninth month, guichou: the son Di was enfeoffed Duke of Xu. On jiwei, every prefectural school library was named “Examining Antiquity.”

Eleventh month, dingwei: mathematics took the Yellow Emperor as chief teacher, Feng Hou and seven others as associated sacrifices, and Wu Xian and sixty-nine others as secondary sacrifices. On jisi, Cai Jing was made Duke of Chu, retired, yet still oversaw Zhezong’s Veritable Records and came to court on new and full moons. Twelfth month, jihai: southeastern tin-alloy coin casting was stopped. That year drought struck Jiang, Huai, Jing, Zhe, and Fujian and famine Qin, Feng, Jie, and Cheng; grain was distributed and taxes remitted. The Yellow River cleared in Shaan and Tong. Java, Champa, and Western Xia presented tribute. Lu chieftain Wang Moruo came in.

In the fourth year, first month, guimao: recoinage of ten-count cash was stopped. On xinyou, gentry and commoners bowing to monks were to be charged with great irreverence. On dingmao, Western Xia presented tribute. Second month, gengwu new moon: tonsuring the crown, arm cautery, bloodletting, and finger-cutting were banned. On gengchen, Jingxi coin offices were abolished. On jiashen, reward promotions were capped below Senior Supporter of the Court. On jichou, Yu Shen became vice director of the chancellery. Zhang Shangying became vice director of state affairs and Hou Meng associate director of military affairs. On renchen, Hedong, Hebei, and Jingdong tin-alloy iron coin casting was stopped.

Third month, gengzi: famine refugees were enlisted as palace guards. Medical students joined the Imperial Medical Bureau, mathematicians the Astronomical Bureau, calligraphers the Hanlin Calligraphy Bureau, and painters the Hanlin Painting Bureau; their school officers were abolished. On jiayin, localities were ordered to relieve displaced persons. On guihai, the demoted were to be gradually rehabilitated; the dutiful could advance before a year was out to call forth later service. On bingyin, fifteen Upper College students passed the examination. On wuchen, lower-rank heterodox memorialists were treated like the blameless; future promotions and transfers need not pass impeachment review.

Fourth month, jimao: the standard pitch-pipe was issued empire-wide. On guiwei, Cai Jing submitted Zhezong’s Veritable Records. On bingshen, the Spirit-Generating Emperor altar was established. On dingyou, compilation of the History of Zhezong was ordered.

Fifth month, renyin: monk certificates were suspended for three years. On dingwei, a comet appeared in Kui and Lou. On jiayin, the Palatial Writings and Comprehensive Excellence examination was instituted. On bingchen, the comet brought withdrawal from court, reduced meals, and orders for attendants to speak frankly on failings. On wuwu, the empire was amnestied. On renxu, Guangxi’s Qiannan circuit was renamed Guangnan West. On guihai, Guangxi’s reckless expansion was tried and commander Wang Zudao posthumously demoted to Zhaoxin deputy commissioner. On jiazi, Cai Jing was demoted to grand mentor of the heir apparent. On bingyin, Yu Shen was dismissed.

Eleventh month, yichou new moon: the emperor attended the Hall of Imperial Brilliance. On bingyin, the imperial ancestors received offering in the Imperial Temple. On dingmao, August Heaven was sacrificed to at the Round Mound; the empire was amnestied and the next year’s era name changed. On bingxu, Gong prefecture was abolished and made Xiangyi county. Twelfth month, gengxu: the Tranquil Harmony Empress was renamed Gracious and Respectful posthumously. That year the Yangtze flooded at Kui. The sea ran clear. Four hundred eighty-six palace women were dismissed from service. Nandan chief Mo Gongsheng came in.

Zhenghe 1, first month, jisi: Worthy Consort Wang was advanced to Virtuous Consort. On renshen, 1,038 licentious shrines in the capital were torn down. On wuyin, the son Gong was enfeoffed Duke of Ding. On bingxu, Bai and Gong prefectures were abolished. On renchen, officials were ordered to cultivate integrity.

At Henan, fine grain appeared and wild silkworms spun cocoons. Eighty palace women were dismissed from service. Annam and Western Xia presented tribute.
