使 西
Appraisal: Mid-Song’s calamity—Zhang Dun and Cai Jing were chief villains; Zhao Liangsi opened the stairway to ruin. Yet when Zhezong died and Huizong was not yet enthroned, Dun said he was too frivolous to rule the realm. When Liao’s Tianzuo fell, Zhang Jue offered Ping in surrender; Liangsi warned that taking him would break faith with Jin and invite attack. Had those two plans been followed—no Huizong, no Zhang Jue—how would strong Jin have found a pretext to attack Song? Thus when disaster comes, petty men may foresee it while gentlemen cannot always restrain it. Tracing Huizong’s loss of the state: unlike Jin Hui’s stupidity or Sun Hao’s cruelty, unlike Cao or Sima usurpation—he relied on petty cleverness, a one-sided mind, driving off upright men and drawing near flatterers. Then Cai Jing, shallow, crafty, and fawning, fed Huizong’s proud, extravagant, dissolute desires. He drowned in emptiness, glorified tours and spectacles, and exhausted the people’s strength. Ruler and ministers lived at ease, feeding one another’s boasts, neglecting government and daily doing what had no standard. When Tong Guan held power he prized arms and distant campaigns, heaping disaster and hastening chaos. When the state was broken and his person disgraced, he shared Later Jin’s Chonggui’s verdict—how could he blame fate? Of old, in newly founded Western Zhou, the Duke of Shao yet told King Wu not to do what harmed the beneficial or prize strange things over useful ones—how much more Song under Xuanhe and Zhenghe, inheriting Xining, Yuanfeng, and Shaosheng’s ruin, while Huizong trod both abuses again? Since antiquity rulers who toyed with things and lost purpose, who indulged desire and ruined measure, have rarely escaped ruin—Huizong did so to the extreme; therefore it is set forth as a warning.
