Second month, dingchou: Establishing-State Duke Yuan was made acting Junior Guardian and created Prince of Pu'an. On jimao, Yang Yizhong received the taboo name Cunzhong. On bingxu, every prefecture was ordered to repair its Confucian school. On xinmao, rent was forgiven for Guangnan East and West counties still recovering from the Luo raids. Fires swept Zhenjiang, Taiping, Chizhou, and Wuhu. On guisi, the Jin court agreed to return the imperial coffin and Empress Dowager; He Zhu's mission came home.

Third month, bingshen: fire broke out in Lin'an. On renyin, the Prince of Pu'an moved to his own residence and was to attend only on new and full moon. On xinhai, Shi Lou—who had once helped guard Yue Fei—was punished as a partisan and sent to Jianzhou. On bingchen, Hu Shijiang died.

On gengwu, Chen Chengzhi and 253 others received jinshi degrees and passes. On wuyin, Wei Yuan was created Prince of Pingle. On xinsi, news first arrived that Empress Xing was dead. On jiashen, Lin'an's prefectural school was enlarged into the Imperial University.

Fifth month, jiawu: Zheng Gangzhong became Sichuan-Shaanxi pacification vice commissioner. On yiwei, Shen Zhaoyuan and others were dispatched to congratulate the Jin emperor's birthday. Controlled border markets were set up on Huai West, Jing West, and Shaanxi. On bingwu, the Cining Hall was expanded. The state stopped issuing ordination certificates to monks. On yimao, the instructor re-examination system was restored.

Sixth month, jiazi: courtiers, censors, and rites officers were told to debate interim housing for the returning coffin. On wuchen, Wan Qixie was named to oversee the provisional tomb arrangements. On xinwei, Wang Shu was demoted to Xiangde Army vice commissioner and sent to Daozhou. On renwu, the Jin sent back Meng Geng and Li Zhengmin. On jiashen, Wu Lin became acting Junior Mentor and commissioner over Jie, Cheng, Min, and Feng.

Seventh month, renchen new moon: Hu Quan was cashiered and banished to Xinzhou. On dingyou, the empress was posthumously titled Yijie and her tablet placed in a side shrine. On jihai, He Zhu was appointed acting Vice Grand Councilor. On jiyou, the court first ordered standing guard of honor and a jade imperial carriage. On yimao, frontier exemption fees were cut in Guangnan and Hubei.

Eighth month, xinyou new moon: Wuzhu's envoy demanded Shangzhou and the Heshang and Fangshan ranges. On bingyin, He Zhu left office. On jiaxu, Wan Qixie became Vice Grand Councilor and chief envoy to thank the Jin. On renwu, the Empress Dowager came home and entered the Cining Palace. On jichou, Gaozong donned hemp mourning, received Huizong's coffin and those of Empresses Xiansu and Yijie, and lodged them at Longde. That month Zheng Gangzhong drew the Shaanxi line: half of Shang and Qin went to the Jin; Shangjin, Fengyang, Tianshui, and scraps of Longxi and Chengji stayed; Heshang and Fangshan were given up; Great Scatter Pass marked the border.

Ninth month, yiwei: Meng Zhonghou became Privy Council Director and chief overseer of the provisional tomb. On renyin, the court proclaimed a great amnesty. On yisi, Qin Hui was made Grand Mentor and Duke of Wei. On bingwu, nine Jin envoys led by Liu Kuo and Wanyan Zongbiao were received. On wushen, Wang Ciweng and others were sent to thank the Jin. The Jin peace oath was locked in the Inner Service Directorate. On xinhai, Zhang Zhongfu was raised to Palace Minister of the First Rank; Zhong Yan became Jinghai Army commissioner. On jiayin, the impostor Princess of Fuguo, Li Shanjing, was flogged to death. Guo Hao of Jinzhou was made commissioner over Jin, Fang, Kai, and Da. Yang Yuan was first dispatched to the Jin to congratulate the New Year.

Tenth month, yichou: the court first allowed medicine to be used throughout the palace and bureaucracy. On bingyin, Huizong and Empress Xiansu were lodged at Kuaiji's Yonggu Tomb; Empress Yijie was joined there. On yihai, Cheng Kejun was made acting Privy Council Signatory and acting Vice Grand Councilor. On dingchou, to mark the Dowager's return Qin Hui was offered the double dukedom of Qin and Wei; he refused. On jiashen, He Zhu—who had aided Yue Fei and resisted peace—was demoted to Secretariat Vice Director and sent to Huizhou. On dinghai, Gaozong celebrated the Dowager's birthday in the Cining Palace. The court set up a Fujian-route office to supervise the tea trade.

Shaoxing 13, spring, wuxu: Huizong received his long posthumous title as Tishen Hedao Junlie Xungong Shengwen Rende Xianci Xianxiao. On jihai, Gaozong personally sacrificed in the Ancestral Temple and presented the register and seals. On guimao, the Directorate of Education and the Imperial University were expanded. On yisi, jinshi examinations again combined classical meaning and fu poetry.

On jiazi, ritual vessels for the suburban altars, temples, and grain altars were commissioned. On yichou, Yonggu Tomb was renamed Yongyou. On bingyin, Han Shizhong was created Prince of Xi'an. On yihai, exemption fees were cut in ten prefectures including Lei and Hua. On bingzi, gold, ivory, leather, and wooden imperial carriages were built. On gengchen, the court fixed rules for the Imperial University and the examination system. On xinsi, Qin Xi completed the Calendar from the Jianyan Reign Onward. On yiyou, the Jingling Palace was raised to receive spirit tablets of past emperors.

Intercalary month, jichou: Honored Consort Wu was made empress. On wushen, the History Office was told to compile loyalists of the Jingkang and Jianyan years. On gengxu, Yang Zheng was received, made acting Junior Guardian, and given fifty qing of land. On renzi, unnamed monthly pile taxes on every route were abolished. On yimao, Wang Ciweng left office.

Fifth month, jiazi: Zhang Jiucheng, judged Zhao Ding's man, was sent to Nan'an Army. On renshen, the Directorate gained Erudites, Rectors, and Recorders. On yihai, every route was ordered to set up life-release ponds. On dingchou, the Tian Shen festival was again celebrated with birthday rites and banquets as before.

Sixth month, renxu: the Three Yamen and all armies were barred from market trade; officer stipends were raised by rank. On renyin, Cheng Kejun left office; Wan Qixie also became acting Privy Council Signatory. On wushen, route judicial commissioners were told to recommend fair prison officers yearly. On gengxu, the Jin released Hong Hao, Zhang Shao, and Zhu Bian.

Seventh month, jiazi: the court sought lost books. Promotions for catching bandits were abolished. On bingyin, Chuzhou troops led by Yang Xing plotted mutiny; exposed, they were put to death. On wuchen, prefectural copper workshops were set up. On renshen, hail fell. Poor households' overdue salt head-tax in western Zhejiang was forgiven.

Eighth month, bingxu: Jiang Miao of the Ministry of Personnel was sent to bring spirit tablets from Wenzhou. On dinghai, each route was to assign one examination-born intendant to oversee schools. On wuxu, Hong Hao returned from the Jin and was received. On jihai, Zheng Pu congratulated the Jin New Year; Wang Shixin and others the Jin emperor's birthday. Zheng Gangzhong offered ten thousand taels of gold. On xinchou, Changhua, Wan'an, and Jiyang garrisons were restored. Tian Sheng, prefect of Jie, marched three thousand men to the mobile court. On dingwei, Tian Sheng was made director of the Palace Horse Guard and his men enrolled. On jiyou, Qian Min was raised to Grand Marshal. On gengxu, intendants and prefects were told to study policies that would ease the people's burdens.

Ninth month, dingsi: clansman Zicheng died at Xiuzhou. On jiazi, Hong Hao was posted prefect of Raozhou. On wuchen, every route was ordered to found halls to nurture clansmen. On jisi, Huai East and Jing West intendants were to report population growth at year's end to grade local officials. On gengwu, Sima Pu—who died faithful—was posthumously made Minister of War; his family received silver and silk. On guiyou, prefects were to supervise schools and county magistrates to run them. On wuyin, Huainan's overdue market dues and tribute silk were forgiven.

Tenth month, jichou: Qin Hui presented the Regulations for Supervising Schools. On gengyin, an armillary sphere was built. On yiwei, spirit tablets of past emperors and empresses were enshrined in the Jingling Palace.

Eleventh month, gengshen, winter solstice: Heaven and Earth were sacrificed together at the Circular Mound with Taizu and Taizong; a great amnesty followed. Twelfth month, guiwei new moon: an eclipse occurred but clouds concealed it. On xinmao, illicit wool coins were destroyed. On guisi, the Secretariat was erected. On dingyou, two hundred more places were added at the Imperial University. On jihai, Guo Hao was received. On dingwei, clansmen at court were ordered into the Palace School. On jiyou, the Jin sent Wanyan Ye and others to greet the coming New Year.

That month the court first issued the next year's calendar to intendants and prefects. That year garrison farming began beyond the frontier passes.

Palace School enrollment for clansmen was capped at one hundred. On jiyou, Lou Zhao became Privy Council Signatory and acting Vice Grand Councilor. Guo Hao was made acting Junior Guardian.

Third month, yimao: long-overdue tribute grain and money on Jiang, Zhe, Jing, and Hu were forgiven. On dingmao, Minzhou became Xihezhou to avoid the Jin founder's taboo; the Sichuan-Shaanxi office became the Sichuan pacification commission. On jisi, Gaozong visited the Imperial University. One year's taxes and labor were cut for Ting, Zhang, Quan, and Jian households still recovering from bandits. On renshen, Xie Qian—judged Zhao Ding's man—was demoted and sent to Nan'an Army. On jimao, the court called for men of worth and excellence.

Fourth month, jiashen: the Ministry of Justice and route intendants were told to clear backlog cases. On dinghai, private histories were banned for the first time. In Qianzhou a man tore down his house and found in a rotten beam the words: "Years of great peace under Heaven." On jiawu, Jin envoys demanded southerners who had fled north of the Huai; the court said return was voluntary. Zhang Shouzhong of the Horse Guard was sent against the pirate Zhu Ming.

On jisi, the Jin for the first time sent Wuyanhe and others to greet the Tian Shen festival. On xinwei, the sea off Yancheng in Chuzhou turned clear. That month floods hit Yan, Xin, Qu, and Jian.

Sixth month, jiashen: years of overdue wine tax, market dues, transport charges, and warehouse debt in Jiang and Zhe were forgiven. Sun Jin lost three more ranks and was sent to Nan'an Army. On dinghai, Gao Shize was made Junior Guardian. On wuzi, Annan presented tribute. On guisi, the sorcerer-rebel Yu Yi rose in Jing county, Xuanzhou; the prefect crushed him. On yiwei, flood victims in Jiang, Zhe, and Fujian were relieved. On bingshen, the eunuch Bai E and his client Zhang Bolin—convicted of slander—were tattooed and sent to Jiyang Army. Zicheng was posthumously made Junior Mentor of the Heir Apparent at state expense. On gengzi, Wan Qixie lost three ranks and was sent to Guizhou. On yisi, the Directorate's primary school was founded.

Eighth month, guiwei: Fuzhou offered auspicious grain. On gengyin, Li Chunnian became acting Vice Minister of Revenue and kept charge of the land survey. On yiwei, Lin Bao greeted the Jin New Year; Song Zhicai the Jin emperor's birthday.

Ninth month, xinyou: Lizhou was split east and west; Wu Lin pacified the west, Yang Zheng the east. On jiazi, outgoing prefects were received at court and each told to nominate one county magistrate. On renshen, Zhao Ding was transferred to Jiyang Army. On guiyou, Lin'an was told to hunt down Cai Jing's kin and exile them beyond any future amnesty.

Tenth month, jiawu: on He Ruo's advice, tutors were warned and the Yichuan Cheng school was driven from court. On yiwei, Wei Yuan was made Junior Guardian. On jihai, because families in Yong, Dao, Chen, Guiyang, and Chaling seldom raised sons, their head-tax in cash and grain was abolished forever.

Shaoxing 15, spring, dingwei new moon: Gaozong held the great audience in the Great Celebration Hall for the first time. On wushen, Feng Ji of Luzhou offered auspicious grain. On jiwei, the examinations split classical meaning and fu poetry into separate degrees. On xinyou, the emperor's sacred plowing field was first laid out. On dingmao, Chengdu's harmonized-purchase rice was cut by a third and the pacification reward fund by three hundred thousand strings. On wuchen, Wang Fu was told to carry out the land survey in the two Zhe circuits. On xinwei, monks and Daoists were first required to pay corvée exemption fees.

Second month, wuyin: one hundred more places were added at the Imperial University. On yiwei, counties were told not to levy third-grade households at the same rate as the wealthy. On jihai, Venerating-State Duke Shen was created Prince of Enping and moved to his own residence.

Third month, jiazi: Zhou Jin, Ma Guanguo, Shi Yuan, and generals Cheng Shihui, Ma Qin, and Bai Chang were all sent back to the Jin.

Liu Zhang and three hundred others received jinshi degrees and passes. On dinghai, a comet brought a great amnesty. On guisi, the comet disappeared. On jiawu, Zhang Yuan of the Rear Army was sent against Fujian bandits. On gengzi, Sichuan's overall transport commission was abolished.

On jiazi, the Jin sent Wanyan Zongyin and others for the Tian Shen festival. Sixth month, yihai new moon: the sun was eclipsed. On dingchou, the Emperor visited Qin Hui's home. On yiyou, Qin Hui's wife, son, and grandchildren received added offices and titles. On dinghai, the guest star disappeared. Seventh month, wushen: the Lizhou coin mint was restored. On wuwu, circuit commissioners were to review magistrates who governed well or were old or unfit and report names for promotion or removal. Lu and Guang were exempted from one year of tribute money and grain. On dingmao, autumn tax was cut for flood-hit Ting, Zhang, and three Chu counties, and E's quota silk for one year. On jisi, 1.3 million strings of Sichuan transport's piled-up Ever-Normal debt were forgiven.

Third month, yihai: He Ruo left office. On jimao, Hanlin academician Duan Fu became Vice Councilor. On yiyou, Qin Hui was retitled Duke of Yi. On wuzi, Zhang Jun took Jingjiang, Ningwu, and Jinghai commands and Han Shizhong Zhennan, Wu'an, and Ningguo. Li Ruogu lost Zizheng Hall rank and was sent to Jiang prefecture.

Fourth month, bingshen: one-third of circuit exemption fees was forgiven. On jihai, Censor-in-chief Wang Bo became Privy Council signatory. On jiwei, an edict barred Zhao Ding from every future amnesty. Shi Hui, a former Chaozhou registrar who had favored Ding in exile, was struck from the rolls and sent to Xun prefecture.

Twelfth month, xinmao new moon: prefectures could not on their own free exiled officials or men tied to urgent frontier cases. On jiayin, Zheng Gangzhong lost office and was sent to Guiyang prison. On bingchen, the Jin sent Wanyan Zongfan and others for the coming New Year.
