After Crown Prince Yuanyi died, Gaozong still had no heir. Empress Zhao, the Sacred and Benevolent, had also returned to the court-in-exile from Jiangxi. She had had a remarkable dream and confided it to Gaozong in private; he was deeply stirred. About then Fan Zongyin, vice director of the Right, came forward in person to urge the same course. Gaozong said, 'Taizu with his godlike prowess brought the realm under his sway, yet his line could not hold what he won—battered by hard times until his kin were scattered and pitiable. If I do not follow Emperor Renzong's example and act for the good of the realm, how can I answer to Heaven above! An edict was then issued to choose an heir from among Taizu's descendants. Li Hui, associate director of the Bureau of Military Affairs, said, 'Our founding emperor refused to reserve the throne for his own son—that came from the purest sincerity. Your Majesty's farsighted concern for the realm matches the Founding Emperor's spirit and can win Heaven's approval. Vice Director Zhang Shou said, 'None of the Founding Emperor's sons was known for moral failure, yet he handed the throne to Emperor Taizong—a deed that puts even Yao and Shun in the shade. Gaozong said, 'This is not hard to do. I will choose from the generation marked by the character bo, so that the ancestral order of zhao and mu may be kept straight. Lou Yinliang, assistant magistrate of Shangyu, also memorialized the throne: 'Taizu's line at Changling has fallen so quiet that his descendants are scarcely distinguishable from common folk. Taizu in Heaven will not look upon us with favor—and that is why the Jurchens have not yet turned from the ruin they have wrought. I beg Your Majesty to choose, from among the bo generation, a grandson of Taizu who is gifted with virtue. When Gaozong read the memorial, he was deeply moved. In the fifth month of Shaoxing 2, the boy who would become emperor was chosen and raised inside the palace. In the second month of year three he was made Defender of Hezhou and given the name Yuan. On the renyin day his post was raised to Guizhou. In the fifth month of year five, on Left Vice Director Zhao Ding's advice, a school was set up in the palace for his instruction; when it was finished, it was called the Hall of Cultivating Goodness. He read with a formidable memory; his native gifts were extraordinary. On the jihai day he was commissioned Military Commissioner of Baojing and enfeoffed as Duke of Jianguo. On the sixth month's jiyou day he was allowed to study at the Hall of Cultivating Goodness. Fan Chong of the Imperial Writings Hall was named instructor, and Zhu Zhen, court recorder, was named lecturer; Gaozong ordered the young heir to bow to Chong and Zhen when he met them. In the first month of year twelve, on the dingyou day, he was made Junior Guardian by inspection and enfeoffed as Prince of Pu'an.

In the third month, on the renyin day, he left the inner palace and moved to an outer residence. In the ninth month of year thirteen the Prince of Xiu died at Xiu Prefecture. In the first month of year fourteen, on the gengchen day, the court agreed that he might leave office to observe mourning. In the fourth month of year sixteen, on the yisi day, mourning ended and he resumed his former post. In the sixth month of year seventeen, on the wuwu day, he was made Military Commissioner of Changde. In year twenty-four bandits broke out in Quzhou. Qin Hui sent Xin Li of the Palace Front Office with a thousand troops to suppress them and said nothing to the throne. When the heir came in to wait on Gaozong and told him, Gaozong was deeply alarmed. The next day Gaozong questioned Qin Hui, who replied that the matter was too slight to trouble the emperor and that he had withheld word until the rebels could be crushed from dawn to dusk. Qin Hui left the audience knowing the heir had spoken against him and bore a grudge. When Qin Hui fell gravely ill, his household hid the fact and plotted to install his son Qi as chief minister; the heir again secretly warned Gaozong and foiled the scheme. In the second month of year thirty, on the guiyou day, he was formally adopted as imperial son and renamed Wei. On the jiaxu day the edict was issued. On the bingzi day he was commissioned Military Commissioner of Ningguo and Grand Preceptor with Three Excellencies honors, and promoted to Prince of Jian. When the appointment was announced, court and country rejoiced. In the fourth month he was given the courtesy name Yuangui. In the tenth month of year thirty-one, on the renzi day, he was made Military Commissioner of Zhennan as part of the Bright Hall amnesty. Earlier, when the Jurchens raided the frontier, Gaozong had proclaimed his own expedition; after the Huai region fell, many ministers urged retreat. The heir, unable to contain his anger, asked to lead the vanguard himself. Shi Hao, lecturer on leave for illness, heard of this and rushed to court. He told the heir a crown prince must not take the field, drafted a memorial, and had it sent in through the inner palace, offering to serve as escort in a son's place. Gaozong also wanted the heir to know the generals personally; in the twelfth month he therefore accompanied the court to Jinling. In year thirty-two, on the fifth month's jiazi day, he was made crown prince and renamed Shen. Gaozong had long meant to abdicate and had once told the heir so; the prince wept and refused, and border troubles kept the plan from being carried out. After returning from Jinling, Chen Kangbo asked to resign; Gaozong again spoke of his weariness of governing. Tang Wenruo of the Secretariat, hearing this, sought an audience and urged that nothing be rushed; an edict establishing the heir was issued first, and he was given the name Ye. Investigating censor Zhou Bida quietly told Kangbo the name matched Emperor Zhaozong's in sound and could not stand. An edict called for a new name, and the one he bears today was chosen. Gaozong then ordered Hong Zun, academician expositor, to select a courtesy name for the crown prince. Zun submitted four choices; none satisfied the emperor.

In the sixth month, on the jiaxu day, the emperor himself wrote the courtesy name Yuanyong.

On the yihai day an imperial letter came down from within: 'The crown prince shall at once take the throne. I shall take the title Retired Emperor and withdraw to the Palace of Virtuous Longevity; the empress shall be styled Retired Empress.' On the bingzi day an inner envoy summoned the heir into the palace and instructed him in person, but he again refused the throne and made for the side gate, intending to return to the Eastern Palace; only after Gaozong urged him repeatedly did he stay. Gaozong then appeared at the Hall of Purple Brightness; when the chief ministers had finished their business, he withdrew. The officials moved their ranks outside the hall gate; after bowing to the edict they re-formed in the courtyard. Soon inner attendants led the heir to the imperial couch; he stood aside and would not sit until they had steadied him seven or eight times, and even then he barely took the seat. The chief minister led the officials in congratulation; the new emperor rose immediately. The chief ministers mounted the hall and pressed him to sit; with a troubled face he said, 'My father and sovereign's command was his alone to give. But this great burden—I fear I am not equal to it.' When the audience ended, the retired emperor went at once to the Palace of Virtuous Longevity. The new emperor, in robe and shoes, walked out through the Hall of Auspicious Dawn, held the carriage through the rain, and would not halt at the palace gate. The retired emperor waved him off again and again, had attendants help him back, and looking back said, 'I have placed it in worthy hands; I have no regret.' Those around him shouted 'Long live the emperor!' That day an edict ordered the offices to draft honorific titles for the retired emperor and empress and report back; inner offices were to send officials in rotation daily to serve the Palace of Virtuous Longevity, with new posts added; commissioners and administrators were appointed; and the palace guard was regulated like that of the Imperial City.
