Emperor Guangzong (personal name Dun), honored with the posthumous title Xundaoxianren Minggong Maode Wenwen Shunwu Shengche Cixiao, was Emperor Xiaozong's third son. His mother was Empress Chengmu of the Guo clan. He was born at the princely residence on the yichou day of the ninth month of the seventeenth year of Shaoxing (1147). In the twentieth year of Shaoxing he received his current personal name, was appointed vice commandant of the Right Gate Guard Command, and then promoted to military commissioner of Rong Prefecture. When Xiaozong took the throne, Dun was made military commissioner of the Zhentao Army with the ceremonial rank of Kaifu Yitong Sansi and enfeoffed as Prince of Gong. After Crown Prince Zhuangwen's death, Xiaozong found Dun as spirited and martial as himself and wished to name him heir, yet hesitated because Dun was not next in line of succession. In the seventh month of the sixth year of Qiandao (1170), the court astronomer reported that Jupiter and Mars had conjoined in the same lunar mansion, an omen associated with enshrining a crown prince, and that an amnesty should follow. Yu Yunwen was then chief minister and used the occasion to urge that the succession be settled without delay. Xiaozong replied, "I have long intended this, and the matter is essentially decided. But I worry that once the heir is formally named, pride comes easily: he may indulge himself, neglect his studies, and little by little lose virtue. That is why I have waited—to let him train in administration and master history, so I will have no regrets later." On the first day (bingzi) of the first month of the seventh year of Qiandao, Xiaozong completed the ceremony of presenting honorific registers and seals to the two palaces. Chancellor Yu Yunwen pressed the matter again. Xiaozong said, "Once I name the heir, I will send the other princes to govern frontier prefectures; you should study how earlier dynasties handled this." Yu Yunwen soon reported back. On the guichou day of the second month, Dun was formally made crown prince; Prince Kai of Qing was appointed military commissioner of the Xiongwu and Baoning armies, assigned to govern Ningguo Prefecture, and promoted to Prince of Wei. On the dingyou day of the third month he received the investiture register as crown prince. On the jiazi day of the fourth month he was assigned to govern Lin'an Prefecture and soon took charge of the capital administration. As Prince of Gong, Dun debated historical precedents with his tutors and often offered insights they had not anticipated; the tutors themselves admitted they could not keep pace. Once he governed Lin'an as prefect, he threw himself into civil affairs and came to know the truth of local conditions in full detail. Xiaozong often praised him and told Chancellor Zhao Xiong, "The crown prince's gifts are outstanding. Whenever he sends someone to inquire after me, I always urge him to keep his mind on his studies." On the yihai day of the tenth month of the fourteenth year of Chunxi (1187), Gaozong died. On the jihai day of the eleventh month, after the court had completed the major mourning rites, Xiaozong wrote by his own hand: "Let the crown prince take part in deciding routine affairs, and use the Inner Eastern Gate Office as his council chamber." On the wuxu day of the second month of the fifteenth year Dun first attended the council chamber. Thereafter he met the chief ministers every other day in full court dress; appointments from secretariat posts and prefectural commissioners upward, whether inside or outside the capital, were brought to him for approval. On the yisi day of the ninth month another edict ordered that the crown prince stand in attendance whenever the court held audience in the hall. In the eleventh month Chancellor Zhou Bida asked to retire. Xiaozong told him, "These past years illness has worn me down; I mean to pass the throne to the crown prince. You must stay on a little longer." When Chen Kangbo's family submitted Gaozong's Shaoxing-era rescript on abdication, Xiaozong on the renshen day of the twelfth month secretly sent a palace envoy to give it to Zhou Bida and charged him with drafting the rites; he also privately told Vice Grand Councilor Liu Zheng of his plan to abdicate. On the xinhai day of the first month of the sixteenth year, as the Two Departments reported on affairs, Xiaozong said he was worn out by rule and wished to abdicate to the crown prince, retire to recuperate, and fulfill the three-year mourning for Gaozong. He then ordered Zhou Bida to submit a draft abdication edict.

The encomium reads: Guangzong enjoyed a fine reputation from youth and favored men of Confucian learning. At his accession he gathered authority into his own hands, pushed aside favorites, lightened taxes and eased punishments—as his early Shaoxi reign showed, he seemed a ruler worth approving. But when jealousy and ferocity inside the inner palace arose, he could not contain them, and fright and grief brought on illness. Thereafter governance grew daily more confused, filial duty daily more neglected, and the achievements of the Qiandao and Chunxi eras faded away.
