宿
The encomium says: The Song saw four abdications in favor of a successor, but Ningzong's alone came at the hardest moment in affairs; that he did not depart from ritual propriety may truly be called handling the matter well. In his early years, drawing on the merit of his former studies and tutelage, he summoned established scholars and promoted worthy men; for a time the policy of preserving the cultural inheritance and sustaining the institutional order shone brightly. Midway through his reign Han Tuozhou came to power, harboring a host of villains within, going so far as to brand upright men as wicked and orthodox learning as false, while abroad he provoked powerful neighbors and spread calamity across the Huai region. After years of repeated defeat in war, Tuozhou's head was sent in a box and peace was made with the Jin; the dignity of the state was thereby diminished. Thereafter Miyuan monopolized power, taking advantage of the emperor's senility and confusion to wield authority and bestow favor as he pleased. When it came to the heir apparent and the succession to the throne, seizing opportunities as they arose, he likewise achieved his private aims of deposing and establishing rulers; the rest may be inferred. Even so, from the Song Eastern Capital down to Renzong, four successions enjoyed a century of rule, which Shao Yong called unmatched in former ages; from the southward crossing down to Ningzong, there were likewise four successions and ninety-eight years of rule. Could this be mere chance? It is a pity that at the moment of receiving and transmitting the throne, Ningzong and Lizong compared with Renzong and Yingzong: though the outward form was the same, the realities behind them were worlds apart.
