Emperor Lizong—posthumously honored as Jian Dao Bei De Da Gong Fu Xing Lie Wen Ren Wu Sheng Ming An Xiao—whose personal name was Yun, was a tenth-generation descendant of Emperor Taizu. His father Xi Yong was later posthumously enfeoffed as Prince of Rong; the household was in Shanyin County, Shaoxing Prefecture; his mother was of the Quan clan. He was born on guihai of the first month in the first year of Kaiyi (1205), at the family house in Rainbow Bridge Lane. The night before, the Prince of Rong dreamed that a visitor in purple robes and a golden cap came to call; when he woke, before ten night-watches had elapsed, the room shone with all five colors, and scarlet light rose to the sky as though the sun stood at noon. Three days after the birth, the family heard the sound of chariots and horses outside the door; they hurried out at once, yet saw no one. As a boy he once napped by day, and someone suddenly noticed his body seeming faintly covered with dragon scales. At that time Ningzong's younger brother, the Prince of Yijing and Huai, died without issue; Xi Qu's son in the imperial clan, given the name Jun, was adopted as heir to the Prince of Yi, and soon renamed Guihe. In the eighth month of the thirteenth year of Jiading (1220), the Jingxian Crown Prince died. With the imperial succession still unsettled, Ningzong chose tenth-generation descendants of Taizu who were fifteen or older for training, following the precedent of Gaozong's selection between the Pu'an and Enping lines; on bingyin of the sixth month in the fourteenth year (1221) Guihe was established as crown prince, renamed Gou, while the future emperor was made heir to the Prince of Yi. On yihai of the sixth month he was appointed Bearer of Righteousness Gentleman. On jiazi of the eighth month he was made Grand General of the Right Gate Guard and granted the name Guicheng. On dingsi of the fifth month in the fifteenth year of Jiading (1222), Gou was appointed acting Junior Guardian and promoted to Duke of Ji. On jiwei he was appointed Defender of Shaozhou. The future emperor was by nature grave and sparing of words; he cherished purity and loved learning. Whenever the court assembled before dawn, others might jest and talk, but he alone sat in solemn stillness. Coming and going in the palace halls, his bearing was always measured; all who saw him straightened their demeanor. About then Duke of Ji Gou fell out with Chief Minister Shi Miyuan, who daily plotted to bring Gou's faults before Ningzong while turning his hopes toward the future emperor—yet he had not yet succeeded.
