In the first month of the second year of Duanping, on dingyou the Moon in motion transgressed Venus. On jiayin an edict ordered deliberation on admitting Hu Yuan, Sun Mingfu, Shao Yong, Ouyang Xiu, Zhou Dunyi, Sima Guang, Su Shi, Zhang Zai, Cheng Hao, Cheng Yi, and nine others to secondary sacrifice in the Confucian temple, and elevated Kong Ji among the Ten Sages. On bingchen an edict ordered Supervisor of the Palace Horse Army Meng Gong to encamp at Huangzhou and arrange border defenses. On dingsi Meng Gong was received in audience. On xinyou Imperial Front Ninghuai Army Commander and Acting Defender of Hezhou Cheng Fei was appointed envoy for friendly relations with the Great Yuan, with Gentleman of Following Righteousness Wang Quan as his deputy; soon Military Gentleman Du Xian was added as vice-envoy.

On the first day jiazi of the second month, a solar eclipse was due but did not occur. On guiyou Jupiter stood in the mansion Di. On renwu Venus and Saturn conjoined in the mansion Wei.

On yiwei of the third month an edict ordered Imperial University student Chen Jun to compile the 《Song Long Compilation Outline》 and Presented Scholar Chen Wenwei to author the 《Explication of the Documents》; both were appointed Junior Merit Gentleman. On dingyou Yang Gu and Yang Shi were both promoted to Grand Preceptor, but soon declined. On yisi Zeng Conglong was made Associate Director of the Bureau of Military Affairs, Zhen Dexiu Vice Commissioner of the Council, and Supervising Secretary and Lecturer Chen Zhuo Associate Signatory of the Bureau of Military Affairs.

In the fourth month of summer, on jiazi, an edict declared: "Former Sichuan Pacification Commissioner Zheng Sun lost his walled cities and embezzled tens of thousands from the treasuries of the five Shaanxi circuits; he is reduced two ranks, banished to Wenzhou, and his household is to be inventoried." On dingmao fire broke out in the capital. On dinghai Venus was visible in daylight. On wuzi the court held a grand military review. A meteor appeared as large as Venus.

In the fifth month, on yiwei, rain and hail fell. Soldiers and civilians clashed; Commander-in-Chief of the Imperial Front Armies Zhao Sheng was reduced three ranks and dismissed, and Han Yu was appointed in his place. On bingshen heavy rain and hail fell. On jiachen Zhen Dexiu died; he was posthumously granted Silver-Gleam Grandee of Glorious Blessing and the posthumous name Wenzhong. On gengxu Qiao Xingjian was appointed concurrent Vice Commissioner of the Council.

In the sixth month, on renshen, the Moon entered the mansion Di. On wuyin Zheng Qingzhi was appointed Special Advancement and Left Chief Councillor concurrently Director of the Bureau of Military Affairs, and Qiao Xingjian Golden-Gleam Grandee of Glorious Blessing, Right Chief Councillor concurrently Director of the Bureau of Military Affairs. On jimao Ge Hong was made Grand Academician of the Hall for Assisting Governance and granted a stipend for temple service. On gengchen a meteor fell in daylight. The court offered prayers for rain. On renwu Zeng Conglong was made Director of the Bureau of Military Affairs concurrently Vice Commissioner of the Council, Cui Yuzhi Vice Commissioner of the Council, Zheng Xingzhi Associate Director of the Bureau of Military Affairs, and Chen Zhuo Signatory of the Bureau of Military Affairs. Presented Scholars Wu Shugao and 454 others were granted degrees and entry with distinctions. On jichou Mars entered the Supreme Palace Enclosure. On gengyin an edict further reduced Zheng Sun two ranks and banished him to Nanjian Prefecture.

In the seventh month of autumn, on dingyou, a meteor appeared as large as Venus. On wuxu Venus crossed the heavens. On xinchou a meteor fell in daylight. On bingwu Venus entered the Eastern Well. On gengshen Minister of Rites Wei Liaoweng submitted ten policy proposals; the court gave no response. In the intercalary seventh month, on wuyin, an edict recorded ministers who died in the Kaixi Shu disaster: Military Commissioner of Da'an Yang Zhenzhong's grandson Zhongsun was appointed Lower-Prefecture Literary Officer; Lizhou Circuit Ever-Normal clerk Liu Dangke's mother Lady Wang, refusing to submit to Wu Xi, drowned herself in the river; she was posthumously enfeoffed as Lady of the Commandery of Heyi, and Dangke was granted promotion and appointment. On yiyou the late Junior Preceptor, Special Advancement, and Silver-Gleam Grandee of Glorious Blessing Zhao Fang was granted the posthumous name Zhongsu. On bingxu the late Military Commissioner of Baoning Army and Duke of Lu An Bing was granted the posthumous name Zhongding. On dinghai Quan Zicai and Liu Zicheng, for abandoning their troops and fleeing by night during the Tangzhou campaign, were each reduced two ranks—Zicai banished to Hengzhou and Zicheng to Ruizhou.

In the eighth month, on guisi, Jupiter entered the mansion Di. On yimao Grand Preceptor Zhao Ruyu was granted secondary sacrifice in Ningzong's temple court, and his portrait was placed in the Pavilion of Illustrious Merit and Exalted Virtue. On dingsi Venus transgressed the Right Law-Enforcer of the Supreme Palace Enclosure.

In the ninth month, on guiwei, the Princess of Chongguo died.

In the tenth month of winter, on xinmao, a meteor appeared as large as Venus. On jiwei Saturn transgressed Bi, and Jupiter and Venus conjoined in the mansion Xin.

In the eleventh month, on yichou, Zeng Conglong was made Director of the Bureau of Military Affairs and Supervisor of Jiang-Huai forces, Wei Liaoweng Associate Signatory and Supervisor of Jing-Hu forces, and Zheng Xingzhi acting Vice Commissioner of the Council. On wuchen an edict granted each supervisory office one thousand taels of gold, fifty thousand taels of silver, one thousand ordination certificates, and five million strings of cash as campaign funds. Censor Li Mingfu remonstrated against the supervisory appointments of Zeng Conglong and Wei Liaoweng; the court did not approve his objection. On wuzi Annam presented tribute goods. In the twelfth month, on gengyin, Zeng Conglong six times memorialized asking to be relieved of the Bureau of Military Affairs commission while retaining his post as Director and Supervisor of Jiang-Huai forces. An edict permitted him to resign as Director of the Bureau of Military Affairs. Wei Liaoweng was made concurrently Supervisor of Jiang-Huai forces. On guisi the Sichuan Pacification Office dispatched a general who beheaded the rebel chieftain Pu Shixing at Wanzhou. On jihai Saturn stood at the Heavenly Street Star. On gengzi an edict ordered the Bureau of Official Commissions to prepare commission documents for ranks from Military Gentleman downward for the supervisory offices. The Moon entered the Well. On renyin Wei Liaoweng took leave at court; an edict ordered him to handle urgent matters and permitted discretionary action. Wu Qian was appointed Bureau Chief Secretary and supervisory staff officer; Zhao Shanhui and Ma Guangzu were made supervisory deliberative officers. On jiachen Zeng Conglong died; he was posthumously granted Junior Preceptor. Yu Yan was made Associate Signatory of the Bureau of Military Affairs. On gengxu the late Vice Commissioner of the Council Li Bi was granted the posthumous name Wenyi. On xinhai thunder sounded.

In the first month of spring of the third year, on the first day jiwei, because the stars moved out of measure and thunder came out of season, the Tianji Festival banquet was canceled. An edict exhorted the people to tend agriculture and sericulture. The king of Annam was granted enfeoffment rank, a ceremonial robe, and a gold belt. On dingmao Saturn transgressed Bi. On renshen Great Yuan troops continuously attacked Hongshan; Zhang Shun, Weng Dacheng, and others led troops in defense.

On jiawu of the second month an edict declared that when Great Yuan troops attacked Jiangling, Commander Li Fuming fought bravely and died; he was posthumously granted three ranks and his two sons were appointed to office. For dead and wounded soldiers, officials were ordered to compile names and submit them promptly. On renyin an edict ordered attendants, censors, remonstrators, and supervising secretaries to itemize border-defense matters. On jiachen Attendant Gentleman Wu Yong submitted a memorial discussing ten matters of defense for Huai, Shu, Jing, and Xiang; the court gave no response. An edict restored Wei Liaoweng to Academician of the Hall of Illuminated Sagacity and Signatory of the Bureau of Military Affairs and ordered him to hasten to court. An edict made Shi Songzhi Huaidong Pacification Commissioner concurrently Deputy Commissioner. On xinhai a complete solar halo appeared. On jiayin Left Bureau Gentleman Zhao Yifu submitted ten strategies for border preparedness.

On yihai of the third month Wu Qian proceeded to court. That month the northern-army commanders of Xiangyang Wang Min and Li Boyuan burned the city walls and storehouses and successively surrendered to the north. At the time the city held more than forty-seven thousand government troops and militia; grain stores of three hundred thousand and twenty-four armories of weapons were all lost, not counting gold, silver, salt certificates, and paper money. Southern-army commander Li Hu took advantage of the fire to plunder wantonly, and Xiangyang was left empty. Pacification Commissioner Zhao Fan, for failing to pacify the armies and causing northern and southern forces to clash in disorder, was reduced three ranks and stripped of Dragon Diagram Hall Academician, but for the time being retained his pacification post. The eighteen tribes of Jie, Min, Die, and Dang submitted. A spy used a proclamation to summon Cao Youwen's army to surrender; Youwen beheaded him and reported the matter.

In the fourth month of summer, on bingshen, the Moon entered the Supreme Palace Enclosure. On jiyou Wei Liaoweng begged to return home; the court did not approve and made him Grand Academician of the Hall for Assisting Governance and prefect of Tanzhou. On guichou an edict repented opening hostilities on the border, blamed itself, and ordered the release of lightly sentenced prisoners held in Jing-Hu, Xing, and Mian circuits.

In the fifth month, on wuyin, Hong Zixie, Commissioner of the Longevity Abbey, was restored to his former concurrent post as Lecturer. On jimao a meteor issued from the mansion Xin, as large as Venus. On xinsi the Moon entered Bi. On jiashen Zhao Kui was made Direct Academician of the Huawen Hall, Huaidong Pacification and Pacification Commissioner, and concurrently prefect of Yangzhou.

In the sixth month, on dinghai, a meteor fell in the evening. On jihai Hong Zixie died; an edict granted him the favor shown chief ministers, two posthumous ranks, and the name Zhongwen. On guimao Mars and Saturn conjoined in Bi. On bingwu Mars transgressed Saturn. On gengxu heavy rain and hail fell.

In the seventh month of autumn, on dingsi, the court offered prayers for clear weather. An edict declared that Guo An of Xuzhou, having fought strenuously and died, had already been posthumously granted Military Commissioner of Shunchang Army; his son Guo Xing was appointed Bearer of Following Integrity Gentleman. On gengshen, because Zhao Fan lost Xiangcheng—the crime heavy yet the punishment light—an edict dismissed him from office and granted temple service. On xinyou the Moon entered the mansion Di. On dingmao Zheng Xingzhi was made Vice Commissioner of the Council and Li Mingfu Signatory of the Bureau of Military Affairs. On wuchen Investigating Censors Du Fan and Wu Changyi, because their remonstrances went unanswered, submitted memorials begging to resign; an edict reassigned Fan as Vice Director of the Court of Imperial Sacrifices and Changyi as Director of the Court of Imperial Sacrifices. On gengwu Mars entered the Well. On wuyin the Moon entered the Eastern Well. On jiashen blood rain fell.

On bingxu an edict further reduced Zhao Fan two ranks and banished him to Jianning Prefecture; Li Hu was reduced three ranks, stripped of his prefectural post, and dismissed from Imperial Armory duties—each was ordered to take responsibility for defense and prove himself. On guimao an edict granted the late Dragon Diagram Hall Academician, Grandee of Glorious Blessing, posthumously Grand Mentor of the State Fu Bocheng the posthumous name Zhongjian.

In the ninth month, on gengshen, Venus and Jupiter conjoined in the mansion Wei. On gengwu there was thunder. On xinwei the Bright Hall was sacrificed to and a general amnesty was granted. There was thunder and rain. On yihai Left Chief Councillor and Director of the Bureau of Military Affairs Zheng Qingzhi was dismissed and made Grand Academician of the Hall for Viewing Culture, Commissioner of the Liquor Spring Abbey, and Lecturer; Right Chief Councillor and Director of the Bureau of Military Affairs Qiao Xingjian was dismissed to the same posts. Cui Yuzhi was appointed Right Chief Councillor concurrently Director of the Bureau of Military Affairs. On renwu Cao Youwen, Brave Guard General and commander of Imperial Front Armies encamped at Lizhou, fought a great battle with Great Yuan forces at Yangping Pass in Da'an Army; his army was defeated and he was killed. An edict posthumously granted him Academician of the Dragon Diagram Pavilion and Grandee of Palace Attendance, with the posthumous name Yijie; a temple called Baozhong was erected, and his two sons were appointed Attendant Gentlemen.

In the tenth month of winter, on yiyou, an edict declared: "Palace Front Division General Hu Bin, who had died earlier in the Shaowu raid, is posthumously granted Grandee of Martial Integrity; the responsible offices are to establish a successor and grant office, and his former temple is granted an inscribed plaque. Imperial clansman Shi Ben, who died in the battle at Youxi, is posthumously granted Gentleman of Martial Integrity; one son is appointed Captain of Advancing Righteousness, and a temple is erected at Linling." On jiawu an edict declared: "Yangzi River Defense Commissioner Chen Wei is to reinforce Huai East; Huai West Pacification Commissioner and Yangzi River Defense Deputy Commissioner Shi Songzhi is to reinforce the upper river at Jiangling and Xizhou." On renyin Great Yuan forces captured Gushi County; Huai West generals Lu Wenxin and Du Lin led tens of thousands of routed troops in rebellion, and Lu'an and Huoqiu were both seized by bandits. On bingwu Annam presented tribute; an edict granted its ruler Golden-Gleam Grandee of Glorious Blessing, Military Commissioner of Jinghai Army, and Commissioner of Observation and other offices, and bestowed court robes and gold and silver belts. The army of Great Yuan Crown Prince Kuoduan left Chengdu; Great Yuan forces captured Wen Prefecture, and defending official Liu Rui and Vice Prefect Zhao Ruxiang were killed.

In the eleventh month, on wuwu, an edict granted Prince Xiuxi Shi Mi the title of Junior Preceptor. On bingyin Qiao Xingjian was appointed Special Advancement and Left Chief Councillor concurrently Director of the Bureau of Military Affairs and enfeoffed as Duke of Suyu. Great Yuan forces besieged Guang Prefecture; an edict ordered Shi Songzhi to relieve Guang, Zhao Kui to relieve Hefei, and Chen Wei to block He Prefecture as strategic support for Huai West. On wuchen Wei Liaoweng was restored as Grand Academician of the Hall for Assisting Governance, prefect of Shaoxing, and Zhedong Pacification Commissioner; Wu Qian, Yuan Fu, and Xu Qingsou came to court. On renshen an edict ordered attendants-in-waiting, officials of the two provincial offices, the censorate and remonstrance, directorate and chief-minister staffs, bureau of military affairs staff, bureau of review officials, and controllers each to submit plans for border defense. On jiaxu the Moon entered the Supreme Palace Enclosure. On wuyin Chengdu Prefecture was recovered. In the twelfth month, on wuxu, Wu Yuan was made Vice Minister of Revenue, overall fiscal administrator of Huai East, and concurrently prefect of Zhenjiang. On renyin an edict changed the next year to the first year of Jiaxi. On guimao Zheng Qingzhi declined the posts of Grand Academician of the Hall for Viewing Culture, Commissioner of the Liquor Spring Abbey, and Lecturer; an edict retained him as Grand Academician of the Hall for Viewing Culture and Commissioner for Overseeing the Grotto Heaven of Mount Tong. On dingwei Xuan Zi died; for his merit in settling the succession he was posthumously granted Grand Preceptor and the posthumous name Zhongjing. On jiayin, for his merit in relieving Chuzhou, Chizhou Commander-in-Chief Zhao Bangyong was promoted by edict to Left Martial Grandee; the remaining meritorious officers and soldiers were to have grades and names submitted for rewards.

In the first month of spring in the first year of Jiaxi, on yimao, Wei Liaoweng was made prefect of Fuzhou concurrently Fujian Pacification Commissioner. On dingsi an edict granted Cheng Zaixian, Jingxi Military Supervisor encamped at Suizhou, three rank promotions, with acting Senior Palace Gate Emissary and Attendant, Jingxi Controller, and concurrent prefect of Suizhou, in reward for his merit at Hongshan; remaining meritorious officers and soldiers were to have names submitted promptly. On xinyou Li Fan was made Associate Director of the Bureau of Military Affairs and Sichuan Pacification Commissioner. On jiazi an edict declared: "People of the two Huai and Jing-Xiang regions who have fled to Jiangnan—in Yangzi prefectures and counties there has been some gathering and relief, yet we still fear the favor does not reach everyone and the displaced have lost their homes. For displaced persons within Jiangyin, Zhenjiang, Jianning, Taiping, Chi, Jiang, Xingguo, E, Yue, and Jiangling, grain is to be issued per capita, with completion expected within ten days and a report submitted." On guiyou Mars stood in the Ghost constellation. On renwu a meteor as large as Venus appeared.

On the first day guimao of the second month, Zheng Xingzhi was made Director of the Bureau of Military Affairs concurrently Vice Commissioner of the Council; Zou Yinglong was made Direct Academician of the Hall of Brilliant Governance and Signatory of the Bureau of Military Affairs; and Li Zongmian Associate Signatory of the Bureau of Military Affairs. Li Mingfu was dismissed and made Grand Academician of the Hall for Assisting Governance and prefect of Shaoxing. On yiyou Ge Hong died. On renyin hail fell. On bingshen an edict granted Zhang Shun, Qu Shen, and others of the Loyalty-and-Righteousness Vanguard one rank promotion each for meritorious naval fighting at Bamang in Gong'an County; remaining favors were distributed by grade. On guimao an edict ordered Zhu Xi's 《Comprehensive Mirror Outline》 sent to the Directorate of Education and also presented at the Classics Mat lecture. On jiyou Venus was visible in daylight, and a complete solar halo encircled the sun.

In the third month, on guihai, a back halo appeared on the sun. On jisi an edict granted Chen Wei, Shi Songzhi, and Zhao Kui each two rank promotions. On yihai Wei Liaoweng died; he was posthumously granted Junior Preceptor and the posthumous name Wenjing. Meng Gong was made Regimentation Commissioner of Zhongzhou, prefect of Jiangling, and Jingxi-Hubei Pacification Vice Commissioner; Bie Zhijie was made Baozhang Pavilion Awaiting Draft and prefect of Taiping Prefecture.

In the sixth month, on renchen, an edict rewarded Qizhou Commander Wan Wensheng and Prefect Xu Lin for defending the city; officers and soldiers on campaign were promoted by merit according to grade. On guisi Zou Yinglong was made Grand Academician of the Hall for Assisting Governance, prefect of Qingyuan, and Coastal Pacification Commissioner. On yiwei Venus and Saturn conjoined in Jing. On jiachen the court offered prayers for rain. On bingwu Wu Qian was made Vice Minister of Works, prefect of Qingyuan, and Coastal Pacification Commissioner. Li Shoupeng, prefect of Huangzhou concurrently Huai West Pacification Commissioner and circuit intendant of that route, three months after appointment did not promptly take up office and returned home; an edict reduced him three ranks and sent him to live in Jianchang Army. An edict established an inner elementary school, selecting two or three clansmen under ten of fine quality and appointing teachers to instruct them.

In the seventh month of autumn, on renzi, Hubei Intendant Dong Huai at his farewell audience memorialized on the evils of paper currency and fluctuating commodity prices. On jiwei the Bureau of Military Affairs reported: "Great Yuan forces from Guang Prefecture and Xinyang reached Hefei; Commissioner's staff consulting official Li Zengbo, Luzhou defending official Zhao Sheng, and Commander-in-Chief Wang Fu fought and held the city, all with meritorious effect." An edict granted Zengbo and eleven others each one rank promotion. On xinyou the Moon transgressed Jupiter and Saturn entered Jing; on gengwu Jupiter stood in Jian. On renshen a back halo appeared on the sun. On guiyou the Moon entered Jing.

In the eighth month, on jiashen, Grand Preceptor and Duke of Qin Ruyu was posthumously enfeoffed Prince of Fu. On yiyou Saturn transgressed Jing; on guisi Li Mingfu was made Vice Commissioner of the Council and Li Zongmian Signatory of the Bureau of Military Affairs. On jiachen an edict declared: At Jiguanyai Pass in Shu, Commander Wang Xuan died in battle; his overall commander Wu Gui abandoned his post and fled and also allowed his troops to loot—he was stripped three ranks and suspended.

In the eleventh month, on wuchen, an edict ordered Chen Wei, Shi Songzhi, and Zhao Kui at Yangzi, Huai, and Han prefectures and armies to prepare naval forces and battle equipment and defend strategic passes and defiles. On xinwei the Grand Astrologer reported that on the first day of the twelfth month a solar eclipse would approach totality, and the sun together with Venus, Jupiter, Mercury, and Mars would all be bound in Dou. An edict ordered reduced meals and avoidance of court audiences in hope of averting the omen, and directed responsible offices to examine precedents and report. On the first day wuyin of the twelfth month there was a solar eclipse.

On the first day wushen of the first month of spring in the second year, an edict ordered attendants-in-waiting, censorate and remonstrance officials, directorate officials, bureau of review officials, commander-in-chiefs, circuit commissioners, and former chief-minister attendants each to recommend two persons skilled in military affairs and finances, and the Three Barracks and army commanders-in-chief each to recommend two persons of general talent. On jiwei an edict ordered Shi Songzhi and Zhao Kui to reinforce Huang Prefecture and Anfeng; meritorious officers and soldiers were to have grades listed and names submitted urgently; for Guang Prefecture and Xinyang, jointly plan their recovery. On xinyou an edict promoted Shi Songzhi to Direct Academician of the Hall of Brilliant Governance, with favor equal to chief ministers; Zhao Kui was made Minister of Punishments, with pacification appointments as before; Yu Jie was made prefect of Zhaoxin Army concurrently Huai East Commissioner's staff consulting official and advanced three ranks; Meng Gong was made Regimentation Commissioner of Ningyuan Army and continued to carry the Imperial Armaments. Shi Songzhi was Direct Academician of the Hall of Brilliant Governance, continuing as Jinghu Pacification and Pacification Commissioner concurrently Yangzi River Defense Deputy Commissioner and prefect of Ezhou, and was summoned to court. On jiazi Liangzhe Transport Vice Commissioner Wang Ye returned from inspecting the river front, entered audience, and impeached Wu Qian, prefect of Pingjiang, on several counts of illegal conduct that oppressed the people. An edict granted Ye direct appointment to the Huawen Pavilion and made him prefect of Jianning.

In the second month, on jiashen, Vice Director of the Court of Judicial Review Zhu Yangzu was made escort commissioner for the northern envoys, borrowing insignia robes and a gold fish tally. On gengyin an edict made Shi Songzhi Vice Commissioner of the Council to oversee Jingxi, Jinghu South, Jinghu North, and Jiangxi military forces, with headquarters at Ezhou. On guisi Imperial Clan Bureau Associate Director Jia Sidao memorialized: "The northern envoys are about to arrive; boundaries, titles, and annual tribute ought to have settled arrangements." He also memorialized: "The way to enrich the treasury—nothing is more urgent than removing corrupt officials. The Founding Emperor treated corrupt officials by clubbing them to death in the imperial hall; Emperor Xiaozong truly ordered tattooing on the face; do this today and funds will naturally be ample." On yisi, an edict promoted Shi Songzhi three ranks, restored him as right grand councilor and commissioner of military affairs, and on the same day dissolved the overall command office.

On jiwei an edict sought forthright remonstrance. In the intercalary twelfth month, on bingyin, Li Zongmian died; he was posthumously granted Junior Preceptor and given the posthumous name Wenqing. You Si was made Director of the Bureau of Military Affairs concurrently Vice Commissioner of the Council; Fan Zhong was made Vice Commissioner of the Council; and Xu Rongsou was made Signatory of the Bureau of Military Affairs. On gengwu an edict released prisoners whose cases were light in circumstance. On yihai an edict ordered that civilian tax payments still be half in paper money, with half of that half paid directly in the eighteenth series and half converted from the seventeenth series. Since the Restoration Zhu Xi was added, penetrating clearly in refined discernment with inner and outer fused in harmony, so that the 《Great Learning》, 《Analects》, 《Mencius》, and 《Doctrine of the Mean》 were thoroughly penetrated root and branch and the Way of Confucius was further greatly illumined in the world. Whenever I read the writings of these five masters they greatly enrich me; now that an imperial visit to study is near, let the academy officials list them among secondary sacrifice to show the intent of honoring and rewarding them." Soon, because Wang Anshi had said "Heaven's mandate is not to be feared, the ancestors are not to be taken as models, and people's words are not to be heeded," making him a criminal for ten thousand generations, he was deemed unfit for secondary sacrifice in the Confucian temple and was removed. On bingwu Zhou Dunyi was enfeoffed as Marquis of Runan, Zhang Zai as Marquis of Mei, Cheng Hao as Marquis of Henan, and Cheng Yi as Marquis of Yiyang. On dingwei the Moon entered the mansion Di. On wushen the emperor visited the Imperial College to pay homage to Confucius, then proceeded to the Hall of Honoring Transformation; he ordered Director of Sacrifices Cao Bi to lecture on the 《Great Learning》 chapter of the 《Book of Rites》; each supervising academy official was advanced one rank, and students received graded gifts of silk. He composed the 《Thirteen Eulogies of the Way Transmission》 and immediately bestowed them on the Directorate of Education to display to the students.

On xinchou an edict specially added the two characters "Upholding Righteousness" to the originally granted honorific title of the king of Annam, Chen Riyu.

On bingchen Anfeng Army commander Chen Youzhi was granted two additional ranks for merit at the battle of Wangjiapu; on renshen commoner Wang Yuzhi presented his authored 《Revised Commentary on the Rites of Zhou》 and was appointed Literary Scholar of a lower prefecture.

On renchen the Sichuan Pacification headquarters stated that Great Yuan forces had captured Da'an Army; Loyal Righteous Deputy Commander-in-Chief Yang Shiwei held firm at Yukong Pass, a lone fortress that would not surrender, showing steadfast character fit to bear responsibility for border defense. An edict made Shiwei prefect of Da'an Army on the spot. On jiawu the sun developed obstructive vapor. On jihai Venus crossed the heavens and was visible in daylight.
