In the fourth year, on the new moon of the first month of spring, renyin, an edict forbade border commanders from launching raids on their own or slaughtering innocents, so as to reassure the remnant people of the Central Plains. The emperor composed two inscriptions, Instruction in Integrity and Caution in Punishment, as admonitions to the court and the realm. Li Mingfu was appointed associate director of the Department of State Affairs; Du Fan vice commissioner of the Bureau of Military Affairs; Liu Bozheng associate signatory of the Bureau of Military Affairs; Yu Jie attendant gentleman of the Huawen Pavilion, retaining his posts as Sichuan pacification commissioner, prefect of Chongqing, and concurrent Sichuan fiscal commissioner; and Li Zengbo direct academician of the Baozhang Pavilion, retaining his posts as Huaidong pacification commissioner, prefect of Yangzhou, and concurrent Huaixi commissioner. On wuwu the Bureau of Military Affairs reported that the Sichuan commander Yu Jie had fought thirty-six engagements, large and small, with considerable success, and that his achievements should be ranked and rewarded. An edict ordered Yu Jie to submit promptly the names and merit ranks of the officers and soldiers who had distinguished themselves, with rewards to follow immediately. On gengshen Yu Jie was additionally appointed Sichuan commissioner of military colonies.

In the second month, on guiyou, one hundred thousand strings of cash each were released from the sealed reserve treasury and the Huai, Jing-Hu, and Sichuan commissioners were ordered to collect and bury the remains left by years of fighting and to establish public burial mounds.

In the fourth month of summer, on dingchou, a meteor as large as Venus appeared from the Tail mansion. On guiwei Saturn stood in the Supreme Palace Enclosure. On yiwei prayers for rain were offered.

On the new moon of the sixth month, gengwu, Lü Wende retained his posts as deputy commander-in-chief of the Palace Horse Army, concurrent Huai West pacification commissioner, and prefect of Hao. On yihai the Ministry of Rites graduates, including Liu Mengyan and four hundred twenty-four others, were granted examination success and official appointment in varying degrees. On renwu an edict ordered that the officers and soldiers of Anfeng Army who had helped lift the siege of Shouchun be promoted in rank, with distinctions according to merit. An edict noted that the Shouchun garrison had earlier crossed the sea and struck Jiao and Mi in Shandong with success; now, with Great Yuan forces besieging the city, they had held the walls without yielding, and all meritorious officers and soldiers were to be promoted according to merit. On yiwei a meteor as large as Venus appeared from the Net mansion. On bingshen Wu Qian was appointed superintendent of the Yulong Longevity Palace in Longxing and allowed to reside where he chose.

On the new moon of the seventh month of autumn, jihai, prayers for rain were offered. On yimao unemployed men along the Huai were recruited into the Wusheng Army, with a nominal strength of five thousand. On xinyou bandits broke out in Dong'an County, Yongzhou; Captain Wu Long of the Flying Tiger Army, Controller Zheng Cun, and others suppressed them with success, and an edict ordered promotions according to merit. On jiazi an edict declared that the late Xiang Anshi, direct attendant of the Dragon Diagram Pavilion, who had upheld orthodox learning and integrity as a renowned scholar of the previous reign, was to be posthumously granted the title compiler of the Hall for Assembling Excellence. In the eighth month, on renchen, Venus was visible in daylight.

In the ninth month, on guimao, Right Chancellor Shi Songzhi requested leave because of his father's illness; leave was granted, and Fan Zhong and Liu Bozheng were ordered temporarily to handle chancellery affairs. On jiachen Shi Mizhong died; he was posthumously granted junior preceptor, enfeoffed as Duke of Zheng, and given the posthumous title Wenjing. An edict ordered Shi Songzhi recalled from mourning to resume as right chancellor and concurrent commissioner of military affairs. On guichou Mars and Saturn conjoined in the Chariot mansion. On jiayin the Jing-Hu commissioner reported that Generals Li Fu and others had breached the walls of Shenzhou, Xiping County in Caizhou, and the Ma family stockades; an edict ordered promotions and rewards for the officers and soldiers according to merit. On jiwei Xu Yuanjie, director of palace construction, submitted a memorial on Shi Songzhi's recall from mourning, arguing that he should be allowed to recommend a successor from among the chief administrators. The emperor refused, whereupon Xu requested to withdraw. The emperor said, "The Classics Lecture Hall relies on your counsel—why would you withdraw?" On guihai Venus transgressed the distance star of the Dipper mansion. On yichou there was thunder. On dingmao there was thunder. Censorial officials reported that Yanzhou and the counties of Shaoxing and Xiaoshan imposed harsh merchant levies; an edict ordered them abolished immediately.

In the tenth month of winter, on jiaxu, an edict ordered the Qingyuan prefect to urge Shi Songzhi to come to court; Shi pleaded excuse, but the request was denied. On renchen Du Fan and You Si were appointed superintendents of the Longevity Abbey, with concurrent duties as lecturers-in-waiting.

In the eleventh month, on xinchou, an edict urged You Si and Du Fan to come to court. On wushen there was thunder. On gengxu an edict ordered Chen Wei and Li Xingchuan to come to court. In the twelfth month, on gengwu, Fan Zhong was appointed left chancellor and concurrent commissioner of military affairs; Du Fan right chancellor and concurrent commissioner; You Si director of the Bureau of Military Affairs; and Liu Bozheng associate director of the Department of State Affairs and concurrent associate signatory of the Bureau of Military Affairs. An edict admonished all officials. Right Chancellor Shi Songzhi was permitted to complete his mourning period. On jiaxu Zhao Kui was appointed vice commissioner of the Bureau of Military Affairs. On yihai Zheng Qingzhi was granted junior guardian, retaining his posts as grand academician of the Hall for Viewing Literature, superintendent of the Liquan Abbey, and concurrent reader-in-waiting, with continued attendance at court, and was advanced in rank to Duke of Wei.

On the new moon of the second month, bingyin, there was a fall of dust from the sky. On jiaxu the Five Rivers were recovered; an edict ordered Lü Wende promoted three ranks and Yang Hong two ranks, with rewards for others who had distinguished themselves in battle; the names of those killed in action were to be submitted for posthumous honors and relief for their families. On dingchou Fan Zhong and others presented the Jade Genealogy, the Calendar, the imperial collections of Xiaozong and Guangzong, the Essentials of Military Classics, and the Veritable Records of Ningzong. On renchen Venus was visible in daylight and crossed the heavens.

In the third month, on gengzi, an edict ordered strict enforcement of laws against corrupt officials and directed the relevant offices to prosecute Peng Daya, Cheng Yisheng, Wu Qi, and Xu Minzi for bribery. Following Chunxi precedents, officials were admonished against greed and cruelty, advance collection of taxes, forced apportionment, repeated exaction, and taking surplus levies. One million strings of cash were granted as rewards for the Huaidong army.

In the fourth month of summer, on jiashen, Saturn transgressed the Upper Chancellor star. On bingxu Du Fan died; he was posthumously granted junior tutor and given the posthumous title Qingxian. On wuzi Yu Jie reported that Acting Prefect of Bazhou He Zhenzhi had died defending the city in battle; an edict ordered posthumous promotion of three ranks and appointment of one son as literary student of a lower prefecture. The Jing-Hu commissioner reported that Controller Wang Yun and others had raided Lingshan in Zhenping County, Dengzhou, and fought at Tieque Ravine in Shunyang with considerable success; in dozens of field engagements six men including Wang Yun died of severe wounds, while Route Controller Yu Jiang's army fought with great tenacity. An edict ordered Wang Yun posthumously promoted three ranks and appointed his two sons as credentialed gentlemen. Wang Kuan, Wang Li, Tian Xiu, Dong Liang, and Dong Yu each received additional posthumous honors and relief for their families; Yu Jiang and others each advanced one rank. An edict noted that Li Zengbo, Yu Jie, Dong Huai, Meng Gong, and Wang Jian had discharged their duties well; Zengbo and Jie were elevated in pavilion rank, and Huai, Gong, and Jian were promoted in rank, each according to his post.

In the fifth month, on dingyou, Lü Wenfu and Xia Gui reported battle achievements; an edict ordered Xia Gui promoted two ranks and Lü Wenfu granted an acting pavilion appointment. On dingwei an edict ordered the commissioners, transport commissioners, and Xupu naval office along the Yangzi, Hunan, Jiangxi, Huguang, and the two Zhe circuits jointly to build one thousand light swift war vessels and to establish thirty thousand raiding troops to be distributed for coastal defense. On wushen the sun showed a red-yellow corona on its back. On xinhai an edict ordered Dong Huai to come to court. On dingsi Huaidong Commissioner Li Zengbo declined the post of academician of the Huanzhang Pavilion; the request was granted.

In the sixth month, on jiashen, prayers for rain were offered. On bingxu Vice Minister of Works Xu Yuanjie died suddenly; he was posthumously granted four ranks. An imperial prison was established.

On the new moon of the seventh month of autumn, guisi, there was a solar eclipse. There was drought. On xinchou Zhenjiang and Changzhou suffered severe drought; an edict ordered surveillance commissioners, prefects, and Yangzi prefectures to settle displaced people. On jiachen prayers for rain were offered. On yimao an edict granted five hundred mu of official fields and five thousand strings of cash to the families of Xu Yuanjie and Liu Hanbi for their relief. On dingsi the Jing-Hu commissioner reported that Overall Controller Kang Guoyong had led troops in battle at Guai River in Yuzhou, at Black Mountain, and at Great Spirit Mountain, all with considerable success. An edict ordered Guoyong promoted two ranks and forty-seven others, including Li Shan, promoted one rank each. Lü Wende reported fighting Great Yuan forces at the Five Rivers pass and again at Hao; the Great Yuan forces withdrew. An edict ordered rewards for the officers and soldiers under Lü Wende's command who had fought and held their positions, with distinctions according to merit.

In the eighth month, on gengchen, Fan Zhong again asked to retire to his estates; the request was denied.

In the ninth month, on jiachen, the Jing-Hu Pacification Office reported that Liu Zheng and others had led elite troops, scaling the walls of Zhenping County on four sides with siege ladders, fighting street by street within the city and burning its granaries, provisions, and armor; Route Generals Wusheng and four others were killed; they raided Guangyang, burning more than twenty encampments, stockades, palisades, and dwellings; and on returning to Lingshan fought again with considerable success. An edict ordered Zheng promoted two ranks and two hundred twenty others who had accompanied him, including Cai Gui, promoted one rank each. On xinhai sacrifice was offered at the Bright Hall, with Taizu, Taizong, and Ningzong all enshrined as associates. A general amnesty was proclaimed. In the eleventh month of winter, on yiwei, Zheng Qingzhi asked to retire to his estates; the request was denied. On bingshen an edict noted that Shi Midian had supervised the imperial genealogy and discharged his duties well; he was granted grand preceptor, with increased fief income, and retained his posts as director of the Great Imperial Clan and heir apparent prince of Xiu. On renzi an edict noted that after Great Yuan forces entered Shu, Acting Prefect of Chengdu Feng Youshuo, Acting Prefect of Han Wang Qiang, Acting Magistrate of Chengdu Yang Dui, Acting Prefect of Zi Liu Yong, and Acting Prefect of Tongchuan Wei Ai had died at their posts; each was posthumously promoted three ranks and one son was appointed to office. On guichou an edict noted that Generals Guan Gui and Controller Bai Fucai had led troops to recover Yangzhou; on the return they met Great Yuan forces in battle, and one hundred fifty-three officers and soldiers were all killed in action; they had been enshrined at the Temple of Loyalty to the Suffering, and their families were granted relief. Guan Gui and Bai Fucai were each posthumously granted gentleman for upholding integrity, and one son of each was appointed vice warden for advancing courage.

In the twelfth month, on jiaxu, an edict noted that the defender of Shouchun Liu Xiongfei and others had distinguished themselves in holding the city against the Great Yuan siege; Xiongfei, Lü Wenfu, Lin Zicong, and eleven others were each promoted three ranks, and Liu Yong and others were promoted according to merit. On jimao You Si was appointed right chancellor and concurrent commissioner of military affairs; Zheng Qingzhi was granted junior preceptor and military commissioner of the Fengguo Army, retaining his posts as superintendent of the Liquan Abbey and concurrent reader-in-waiting, with continued attendance at court, and was granted a jade belt and a residence in the capital. His elder brother You Huan was transferred to military commissioner of the Ande Army, grandee with opening office equal to the three excellencies, and superintendent of the Longevity Abbey, with continued attendance at court; and his younger brothers, the heir apparent princes of Yi and Rong, Gui Qian and You Rui, were both additionally granted junior guardian. Zhao Kui was appointed director of the Bureau of Military Affairs and concurrent associate director of the Department of State Affairs; Li Xingchuan vice commissioner of the Bureau of Military Affairs; and Chen Wei concurrent associate director of the Department of State Affairs. On renwu the grand astrologer reported that the coming New Year's Day would see a solar eclipse; an edict ordered that on the twenty-first of this month the court withdraw from the main hall and reduce meals, and directed all offices to address neglected policies, with frank counsel on anything that might avert calamity.

In the second month, on wuchen, Fan Zhong again asked to retire to his home district; an edict promoted him three ranks and granted him grand academician of the Hall for Viewing Literature, superintendent of the Liquan Abbey, and concurrent reader-in-waiting. On jisi Fan Zhong declined again; an edict appointed him superintendent of the Cavern of Heaven Abbey and allowed him to reside where he chose. On gengwu Liu Xiongfei was appointed prefect of Shouchun and controller of military colony troops and horses.

In the fourth month of summer, on xinyou, Venus was visible in daylight. On renxu the Moon transgressed Venus. On jiaxu Qiu Yue was appointed concurrent deputy commissioner of military colonies for the Two Huai circuits, and Jia Sidao concurrent deputy commissioner for Qi and Huang. On dingchou the sun was surrounded by a complete halo. On wuyin an edict appointed Zhu Xi's disciples Hu Anzhi, Lü Yan, and Cai Mo as aspirant merit gentlemen and professors of their native prefectural schools. Letters were issued to record their writings, and they were to submit in detail whatever they wished to report to the throne. In the intercalary fourth month, on xinmao, after censorial remonstrance against Li Zengbo, an edict stripped him of office and granted him a temple post; soon his temple stipend was abolished as well. On wuxu Lü Wende reported that that spring northern forces had attacked the Two Huai circuits, and that Controller Wang Huaizhong and others had met them at Zhao Family Garden and recovered captives; Route Controller Xia Gui, Prefects Wang Cheng and Ni Zheng, and others had led naval forces to relieve Anfeng Army, fighting repeatedly along the way, with many officers and soldiers killed in action. An edict ordered Ni Zheng posthumously promoted three ranks and one son appointed credentialed gentleman; Xu Tong, Xia Gui, Sun Cai, and Jiang Dexian were each posthumously promoted two ranks, with one son of each appointed lower-class attendant and strings of cash granted to their families; and the remaining meritorious officers and soldiers were rewarded according to merit. On xinchou the moon showed five halos. On guimao Yu Jie reported that northern forces had entered Shu by four routes; wherever officers and soldiers had distinguished themselves in defense, he had promptly rewarded them as circumstances allowed and would submit merit ranks for promotion. An edict approved the request.

In the fifth month, on gengshen, an edict ordered Jia Sidao to arrange construction of stockade fortifications in the western Huai mountains. On renxu Venus transgressed the Power star. On jimao an edict ordered all garrisons to recruit troops, build vessels, and procure horses, and directed commanders to encourage their officers and soldiers and strengthen border defense.

In the seventh month of autumn, on renxu, Quanzhou suffered famine that year; the commoner Xie Yingrui, without being urged by officials to share grain, himself disbursed more than four hundred thousand in private funds to buy rice and relieve his township, saving a great many lives. An edict promoted him to advanced righteousness captain. On dingmao the Moon transgressed the Dipper mansion. On jisi Lü Wende reported that northern forces had besieged Shouchun, that the prefectural army had reached Huang Family Cave, and that Overall Controllers Sun Qi, Lü Wenxin, Xia Gui, and others had fought at Longgang with considerable success. An edict ordered Wende promoted one rank and the others promoted according to merit; for the twenty-two killed in action, including Dong Xian, and four hundred thirty-seven wounded, posthumous honors, relief, and rewards were granted according to merit. On guiyou a meteor issued from the Encampment mansion, as large as Venus.

In the eighth month, on xinmao, the Moon transgressed the Chamber mansion. On jiyou the literary scholar Liu Kezhuang was granted jinshi standing and appointed vice director of the Secretariat, concurrent compiler of the National History Institute and reviser of the Veritable Records Institute. On renzi Venus was visible in daylight. On guichou Liu Kezhuang was appointed concurrent lecturer of the Hall for Exalting Governance. The Bureau of Military Affairs reported that the former prefect of Puzhou, He Shuding, and associate signing administrator Yang Renju, when northern forces attacked the city in the winter of the first year of Chunyou, had lost more than twenty members of both families in the calamity; Shuding's grandson Sizu and Renju's young son Xiao Weng had been captured but escaped and returned. An edict ordered posthumous honors for Shuding and others and relief for their survivors according to merit.

On wuchen Jia Sidao was appointed direct academician of the Fuwen Pavilion, Jing-Hu pacification commissioner, prefect of Jiangling, and concurrent coordinator for the Kuizhou route. Venus was visible in daylight. On guiyou Meng Gong died; he was posthumously granted junior preceptor.

In the tenth month of winter, on jichou, the son of Junior Guardian and Heir Apparent Prince of Rong You Rui was granted the name Meng Qi and appointed prefect of Gui. On yiwei Saturn, Jupiter, and Mars conjoined in the Neck mansion. On jiyou Venus entered the Root mansion.

In the eleventh month, on guihai, Jupiter entered the Root mansion. On jiaxu Right Chancellor You Si five times asked to retire to his home district; the request was denied. On xinsi an edict noted that after northern forces entered Shu, the former Sichuan pacification commissioner Chen Longzhi and his entire household of several hundred had perished without yielding their integrity; he was specially granted attendant gentleman of the Huiyao Pavilion, his two sons were appointed to office, and he was given a posthumous title with a temple established in his honor. Shi Jijian and Yang Kanzi, who had died in service, were each posthumously promoted two ranks, with one son of each appointed to office. In the twelfth month, on yiwei, an edict granted Shi Songzhi retirement, as he had requested, as guardian of the golden purple and luminous grandee, grand academician of the Hall for Viewing Literature, and Duke of Yong. Censorial remonstrance argued that Shi Songzhi had been faithless to father and sovereign alike, with a foul reputation and vile conduct; judged by the law against disloyal subjects, his crimes deserved death—they requested suspension of his palace temple post, stripping of his office, and banishment to a distant place.

In the seventh year, on the new moon of the first month of spring, yimao, an edict declared that the unworthy had recently been dismissed and the upright recalled; Shi Songzhi had been ordered to retire, showing that he would not be employed again. I charge you, my great ministers, to unite your hearts, strive to enact real policies, and thereby bring peace to our state and house. If your words exceed your deeds and you idle away the months, on whom can I rely? The Hall for Nurturing Goodness was established; Meng Qi was granted military commissioner of Yizhou and entered the inner elementary school.

In the second month, on gengyin, an edict noted that Huai'an registrar Zhou Zirong, long held captive in the north, had repeatedly sent wax-sealed intelligence on border affairs and had now returned alive; he was to be promoted to court gentleman for attending sacrifice with favorable advancement. On jihai Honored Consort Jia died. On wushen the sun was surrounded by a complete halo. On renzi an edict renamed the Hidden Residence as the Dragon Soaring Palace.

On xinchou Zheng Qingzhi was appointed grand preceptor, right chancellor, and concurrent commissioner of military affairs, and enfeoffed as Duke of Yue; You Si was dismissed to grand academician of the Hall for Viewing Literature, superintendent of the Liquan Abbey, and concurrent reader-in-waiting; Zhao Kui was appointed commissioner of military affairs and concurrent associate director of the Department of State Affairs, with superintendence over Jiang-Huai, Jingxi, and Hubei forces; Chen Wei was appointed director of the Bureau of Military Affairs, grand ambassador for Hunan pacification, and prefect of Tanzhou. On jiachen Zhao Kui was additionally appointed prefect of Jiankang, mobile court defender, and Jiangdong pacification commissioner, with authority to act at discretion in all military movements and arrangements on campaign; Zhao Xijiong was appointed minister of rites and assistant in military affairs for the superintendent's mobile office. On gengxu ten million strings of cash, one hundred fifty thousand taels of silver, one thousand temple certificates, ten thousand bolts of silk, and fifty million taels of Ministry of Revenue silver were disbursed for the use of Superintendent Zhao Kui's mobile office.

In the fifth month, on jiayin, Controller Zhang Zhong of the Ning-Huai Army, garrisoning Fushan, grappled hand to hand with a northern general and both drowned; he was posthumously granted grandee of martial strategy, one son was appointed credentialed gentleman, and five thousand strings were granted to his family. Prayers for rain were offered. On renshen Wu Qian was appointed acting associate director of the Department of State Affairs. On yihai the emperor held examinations in the Hall for Assembling Excellence and called for frank counsel to end the drought.

In the sixth month, on guisi, Ministry of Rites jinshi Zhang Yuanwei and five hundred twenty-seven others were granted examination success and official appointment in varying degrees. On bingshen, on account of drought, the court withdrew from the main hall and reduced meals. An edict ordered officials and commoners alike to state faults frankly without concealment. On wushen an edict noted that the drought had not yet abated; in the Two Huai circuits, Xiang, Shu, and the interior of Jiang and Min, in prefectures and counties that had seen warfare, exposed bones lay about, disturbing harmonious qi, and the relevant offices were ordered to gather and bury them. In the seventh month of autumn, on jiwei, the Moon transgressed the Heart mansion. On yichou Wu Qian was dismissed. On dingmao Bie Zhijie was appointed associate director of the Department of State Affairs, and Zheng Cai associate signatory of the Bureau of Military Affairs. On jimao Wu Qian retained his posts as academician of the Duanming Hall, prefect of Fuzhou, and Fujian pacification commissioner.

On jiyou censorial officials reported ten abuses in official appointment: supernumerary posts, drawn appointments, acting offices, required entry, memorial recommendations, transfer of posts, recommendations, borrowed supplements, dereliction of duty, and concealment of faults.

In the eleventh month, on dingsi, an edict noted that Huang Duanqing, magistrate of Chaling, had been killed by Chen bandits; he was to be posthumously promoted three ranks, one son appointed gentleman for initial service, and a temple established in Hengzhou. In the twelfth month, on xinsi, Li Mingfu died. On renchen an edict noted that Imperial University student Cheng Jiuwan had escaped from the north and returned, submitted border affairs in detail, and was granted aspirant merit gentleman.

In the eighth year, in the second month of spring, on dinghai, Zhao Kui reported that Lü Wende and his generals had distinguished themselves in lifting the siege of Sizhou; an edict ordered promotions and rewards according to merit. On wuzi the Moon showed a yellow-white halo. On guisi hail fell.
