In the second year, on the new moon of the first month of spring, yihai, the Great Yuan fortified Lizhou and Langzhou. An edict commended the filial conduct of Chen Keliang of Xiangtan County and ordered an honorific tablet placed at his gate.

In the second month, on the new moon, jiachen, an edict ordered the Directorate of Ceremonies to rectify Qin Hui's posthumous title, and the emperor told his chief ministers, "The posthumous title Deceitful and Fierce would be fitting." Mars transgressed the Authority Star. On yisi an edict noted that Lü Da, the Lizhou commander, had fallen in battle; he was posthumously promoted four ranks, one son was appointed Gentleman for Trustworthiness, and one son was made a lower-ranking attendant. On jiyou Yu Hui was additionally appointed Sichuan commissioner of military colonies. On gengshen an edict noted that Rao Lu, a Raozhou commoner who had shunned the civil examinations and devoted himself solely to classical learning, was appointed Gentleman for Meritorious Achievement and professor at Raozhou. On xinyou a complete solar halo appeared. On wuchen the late Li Fan, direct attendant of the Huawen Pavilion and a disciple of the earlier Confucian Zhu Xi, was granted the posthumous title Wending.

In the third month, on renwu, Wang Yuanshan, who had been sent as envoy to the Great Yuan and detained for seven years, returned home. On wuzi it snowed. An edict remitted this year's two tax levies in the Jiang and Huai regions. On jichou an edict recorded the merit at Xiangcheng: Gao Da was granted acting status as a guard officer and remote-prefecture regiment trainer, with his duties unchanged; Wang Deng was made acting supervisor of the Directorate of Military Equipment and strategic-planning commissioner advisor; Cheng Dayuan, Li He, and the officers and soldiers below them—six thousand six hundred thirteen in all—were promoted in rank with distinctions according to merit. On jiawu Donghai was fortified, and Jia Sidao submitted a map of the work.

In the fourth month of summer, on xinhai, an edict noted that border troops were pitiably poor and that much idle land lay available; nearby plots were to be selected and distributed for cultivation, to be administered by the strategic commissioners and prefectural officials. On yichou Xu Qingsou was appointed commissioner of the Bureau of Military Affairs and concurrent vice director of the Department of State Affairs, and Dong Huai was appointed vice director of the Department of State Affairs.

On the new moon of the sixth month, renyin, the Linping tax station in Lin'an Prefecture was abolished. On jiachen the Sichuan strategic office reported that Northern troops had entered Hezhou and Guangan Army; Wang Jian, Cao Shixiong, and others had fought in defense with merit. An edict ordered Wang Jian promoted two ranks, and the others promoted in rank according to merit. On jiayin the attendant censor Wu Sui and others charged the late Sichuan commander Yu Jie with seven crimes of extortion and illicit profit; after Yu Jie's death his son Rusun had stolen the entire accumulated treasury stores and taken them home. An edict ordered Yu Jie's family property inventoried. Li Zengbo was appointed academician of the Hall for Assisting Governance and continued to control Sichuan as before. On bingchen Wang Zuo of Lizhou held fast in an isolated fortress; the defector Nan Yongzhong pressed the city with troops, Wang Zuo cursed him, and Nan Yongzhong wept as he withdrew. Earlier, Zheng Bingsun, professor at Longqing, had refused to surrender with Nan Yongzhong; he first hanged his wife and daughter, then hanged himself in court dress. An edict of commendation ordered Wang Zuo promoted one rank; Zheng Bingsun was posthumously granted Gentleman for Court Service and direct attendant of the Secretariat Pavilion, and his son was to be sought out and given a civil appointment. Wang Boda requested retirement; an edict promoted him one rank and granted his request. On dingsi Jia Sidao was appointed vice commissioner of the Bureau of Military Affairs, with his duties unchanged. On gengwu an edict ordered Yu Hui to come to court. In the intercalary sixth month, on renshen, Dong Huai submitted a memorial: affairs in Shu were critically urgent; he wished to be granted the title of pacification commissioner, to establish an office at Kuimen and thereby link Jing and Shu. The emperor replied with a gracious edict: "Few among the scholar-officials urge themselves on by achievement; your request to command Shu shows ample loyalty and courage. Yet managing western affairs should be done from the court; you should exhaust your counsel and strategy to fulfill the commission entrusted to you." An edict ordered Pu Zhezhi temporarily to take charge of the Sichuan strategic office. On jiaxu the merit of the Jiading campaign was recorded. Earlier, Great Yuan troops had besieged the city for fifty days; the commander-defenders Yu Xing, Yuan Yong, and others opened the gate by night and fought fiercely until the siege was lifted. An edict ordered Yu Xing and the other fifteen men each promoted five ranks, with officers and soldiers promoted according to merit. Bao Hui was appointed judicial intendant of western Zhejiang to recruit forces and capture the salt bandits of Dipu. On yihai sea bandits in Taizhou, who had plagued the people for years, were captured by Route Commander Dong Shu and the presented scholar Zhou Zizhong and others; an edict ordered Dong Shu promoted one rank, with the others rewarded according to merit. On renwu Li Zengbo was appointed Sichuan pacification commissioner and concurrent grand commissioner of Jing-Hu strategic affairs, advancing to take charge of Kuilu; an edict granted Li Zengbo status equal to a jinshi degree holder. The Jiangwan floating-salt bureau was abolished; on wuxu the Great Yuan envoy left Yangzhou and returned north.

In the seventh month of autumn, on jiyou, an edict declared, "The former Sichuan commander Yu Jie governed without proper conduct; troops suffered under repeated campaigns and the people were exhausted by exactions; now his family is ordered to surrender the wealth taken from Shu to reward the army and relieve the people; and land tax in the border prefectures is remitted for three years." An edict noted that Si and Bo prefectures had defended themselves year after year; their prefects Tian Yinggeng and Yang Wen were each promoted one rank, with further honors distributed according to merit. An edict ordered Jia Sidao to open a command headquarters under the name of the Bureau of Military Affairs field office. On gengxu a meteor as large as Venus appeared. On jiayin the late Grandee of Splendid Happiness Jia She was granted the posthumous title Zhongsu. On renxu Anxi Fort was restored. On jisi the Dipu sea bandits were subdued; Bao Hui was promoted to direct attendant of the Dragon Diagram Pavilion, and Liu Da was granted hengxing status with a remote prefecture title. Li Xingchuan came to court; Wang Jian was appointed commander-in-chief at Xingyuan and concurrent prefect of Hezhou.

In the eighth month, on yihai, an edict ordered the former Langzhou prefect and concurrent Li Xi pacification commissioner Wang Weizhong handed over to the Dali prison; censorial officials were soon ordered to supervise the investigation. On xinsi Xu Qingsou requested to be relieved of state affairs; an edict refused. On guisi Xie Fangshu and others submitted the Jade Register, the Calendar, the Compendium of Institutional Regulations, the Essentials of Military Affairs across Seven Reigns, and the Biographical Records of the Four Reigns of the Restoration; an edict ordered Xie Fangshu, Xu Qingsou, Dong Huai, and the others each promoted in rank. On wuxu Wang Weizhong's family property was confiscated and inventoried.

In the ninth month, on xinhai, the Bright Hall was sacrificed to and a general amnesty was proclaimed. On xinyou an edict ordered a visit to the West Grand Unity Palace to pray for the nation's good fortune; Attendant Gentleman Mou Zicai remonstrated twice by memorial and the plan was halted. On bingyin an edict warned imperial affines against meddling in petitions. An edict declared: the four counties of Shanyin, Xiaoshan, Zhuji, and Kuaiji had suffered flooding; this year's land tax was remitted. On dingmao Venus was visible in daylight.

In the tenth month of winter, on the new moon, gengwu, Xie Fangshu and others submitted the Baoyou edition of the Supplementary Regulations of the Seven Bureaus of the Ministry of Personnel. On guiyou Prince Qi was advanced to Prince of Zhong. On jiawu Wang Weizhong was executed in the marketplace. On dingyou Yu Jie's title as academician of the Hall for Assisting Governance was posthumously stripped, and Yu Hui's certificate as vice minister of justice was revoked. On wuxu Duan Yuanjian submitted a report on the merit of the battle at Longqing Fort.

In the eleventh month, on renyin, the winter solstice arrived. The Prince of Zhong underwent the capping ceremony. On dingwei the Great Yuan fortified the old seat of Guanghua. In the twelfth month, on gengwu, baojia units were organized and the self-declaration law was implemented. On guiwei thunder sounded. News of victory at Kuzhu Pass in Sichuan arrived. On jiawu Zhou Rong, a soldier of the Longqing garrison who had been captured and taken north, secretly agreed with Duan Yuanjian to enter the pass and lift the siege; when the plot was discovered he was seized and, refusing to submit, died; Ma Hui and Bai Duan fell in battle. An edict ordered the Sichuan pacification office to erect a temple in their honor. Anxi Fort had been under attack for five months; officers and soldiers fought fiercely until the siege was lifted, and the residents supplied grain and provisions to bolster the army's stores. An edict ordered the Sichuan pacification office to submit names for honors; all persons within the city were rewarded one rank, and taxes and levies were remitted for five years. Yu Jie's son Rusun was close to completing payment of the thirty million cash he had acknowledged. An edict ordered Rusun stripped of three ranks and dismissed from office.

In the third year, on jiwei in the first month of spring, thunder pealed. News of victory at Bazhou arrived. On gengshen Longshan in Junzhou was fortified. Attendant Gentleman Mou Zicai submitted a memorial saying, "On the Lantern Festival night lamps are hung in extravagant display; actors and low performers offer strange tricks for laughter, defiling the pure precincts of the palace and reflecting poorly on the emperor's virtue. Now heaven has shown its warning through thunder; I pray that Your Sagely Brightness will awaken, and heaven's intent may yet be turned back." The emperor accepted his words. On renxu an edict ordered that names proposed by the Directorate of the Imperial Clan use the five characters yong, yi, ji, ci, and shao, continuing below da, you, you, si, and fu.

In the second month, on yihai, an edict appointed Right General of the Thousand-Ox Guard Nai You Defender of Qizhou to tend the shrine of Prince Yi Jing Hui. Concurrently Serving Gentleman Wang Ye said, "The state and the Great Yuan originally bore no deep enmity, yet war has continued and disaster has accumulated, all originating from the commanders who entered Luoyang lightly opening hostilities. A few reckless men such as Zhao Kai, Quan Zicai, and Liu Zicheng, rash and without plan, caused not even a single chariot wheel to return. Quan Zicai is arrogant, deceitful, and cruel; now he cites Liu Zicheng's precedent to petition for correction of his own case. I beg that both men's appointments be suspended and their shrine stipends revoked, as a warning against losing armies and ruining the state." The request was granted. On jimao Guangling Fort was restored, and Jia Sidao submitted a map of the work. On renwu an edict released two million strings of cash for Sichuan's military expenses. On yiyou an edict ordered that appointment certificates, shrine certificates, Xinhui paper, incense, and salt be used to collect and exchange worn huizi notes of both issues, under Lin'an Prefecture prefect Ma Guangzu.

In the third month, on jiyou, an edict declared that where border farming colonies produced surplus revenue, the officials in charge of military colonies were to be rewarded; the same applied in Jing-Xiang, the two Huai regions, and mountain stockades. On gengxu the bandits in Shaowu were subdued. On guichou an edict declared that the self-declaration law should be given a longer deadline; circuit commissioners and prefects were to strictly curb official corruption and not harass the people. Wu Yuan was appointed academician of the Hall for Viewing Culture, Jing-Hu strategic commissioner, and prefect of Jiangling. On jiwei dust rained from the sky.

In the fourth month of summer, on yiyou, Jiang Wanli was appointed prefect of Fuzhou and Fujian pacification commissioner.

In the fifth month rain persisted for a long time. On dingwei, because appointment letters from circuit commissioners and prefectures had become excessive and indiscriminate, an edict strictly forbade the practice. On jiyou Li Xingchuan died. On xinyou the Moon entered the Net constellation. Jiading was hit by heavy rain and hail, and an earthquake struck Xunan the same day. Western Zhe was inundated by major floods.

In the sixth month, on xinwei, gale-force winds blew. On jiaxu the Moon entered the Root constellation. On jiaxu Li Quan's son Songsou rebuilt the old coastal fort and probed the sea lanes; Jia Sidao raised troops and defeated him; an imperial commendation was sent, and meritorious officers were ordered to submit their names and merit ranks promptly for reward. On wuzi Hong Tiansi impeached the inner officials Lu Yunshu and Dong Songchen; when the memorial went unanswered he eventually resigned, and was then ordered transferred to vice director of the Directorate of Ceremonies. On xinmao Wang Ye was dismissed as concurrently serving gentleman at the urging of censor Hu Dachang, but retained his posts as academician of the Duanming Hall and superintendent of the Cave of Heaven Abbey.

In the seventh month of autumn, on xinchou, the Moon entered the Root constellation. On guichou Lü Wende was appointed prefect of E Prefecture with oversight of Ding, Li, Chen, Yuan, and Jing prefectures. On bingchen Xie Fangshu and Xu Qingsou were dismissed at the urging of censor Zhu Yuanyuan. On xinyou a meteor as large as the Great White Star was seen. An edict on routine business at the Three Departments and Military Bureau directed Dong Huai and Cheng Yuanfeng to take turns handling affairs and receiving imperial decisions. On renxu Xie Fangshu was appointed grand academician of the Hall for Viewing Culture and superintendent of the Cave of Heaven Abbey in Lin'an Prefecture.

On the new moon of the ninth month, jiawu, there was thunder. On bingwu Xu Qingsou was appointed academician of the Hall for Promoting Governance and superintendent of the Cave of Heaven Abbey. On bingchen Chen Xianbo was additionally appointed assisting tutor of the Hall for Nourishing Goodness, and Pi Longrong was additionally appointed reader of the same hall. On renxu Acting Drafting Official Chen Dafang said: "Liu Zicheng was among the Duanping army that marched into Luoyang and eagerly urged the venture forward; when northern troops had scarcely entered Tang Prefecture, Zicheng was already first to flee, ending in utter disaster; the state's troubles over the past twenty years all stem from this, and he should be banished to the farthest frontier." An edict stripped Liu Zicheng of his stipendary office.

In the eleventh month, on dingsi, Mars transgressed the Upper Chancellor star in the Supreme Palace Enclosure. In the twelfth month, on yichou, Shan Huan, heir prince of Pu, died. On bingzi Junior Tutor and military commissioner Yu Huan died; he was posthumously promoted to Junior Preceptor and posthumously enfeoffed as Prince of Fenghua commandery.

In the fourth year, on yiwei in the first month of spring, an edict stripped Xie Fangshu of his office and stipendary post; he was demoted three ranks and suspended from service. On yisi the Moon transgressed Jupiter. On jiyou the Moon transgressed Mars. On xinhai Wu Yuan was appointed Jing-Hu strategic commissioner and concurrent Chongqing route response commissioner; given the pressing military situation, he was authorized to act at discretion. On gengshen the Sichuan frontier reported a military victory. On xinyou an edict appointed Shi Songzhi grand academician of the Hall for Viewing Culture, retaining his rank as Grandee of the Golden Purple Light and his retirement as Duke of Yong.

In the second month, on wuchen, hail fell. On bingzi an edict appointed Kong Zhu, grandson of the hereditary Duke of Continuing Sage, to an additional post as vice prefect of Ji Prefecture without regular administrative duties.

In the third month, on renyin, Junior Preceptor and heir prince of Rong Yu Rui was appointed Grand Tutor. On yimao the sun was ringed by a complete halo. On bingchen the emperor composed Instruction in Governing the People and granted it to officials receiving rank changes who directly governed the people.

In the fourth month of summer, on gengwu, the moon was ringed by a complete halo. On guiwei Cheng Yuanfeng was appointed associate director of the Department of State Affairs; Cai Kang vice commissioner of the Bureau of Military Affairs; Jia Sidao associate director of the Department of State Affairs, retaining his duties; Li Zengbo grand academician of the Hall for Promoting Governance and Fujian pacification commissioner; Wu Yuan advanced two ranks, retaining his duties; Wu Qian coastal strategic commissioner and acting prefect of Qingyuan; Ma Guangzu direct academician of the Huanzhang Pavilion, retaining his duties.

In the fifth month, on jiawu, Sun Mengguan was additionally appointed reader of the Hall for Nourishing Goodness, and Zhang Jian was additionally appointed lecturer of the same hall. Kong Yuanlong, fiftieth-generation descendant of the First Sage, was granted Gentleman for Meritorious Achievement and appointed to entry-level office. On jiachen envoys from the Lu clan Ghost State reported from Baosi and Bo that Great Yuan troops were encamped in Dali and, advancing by the southwestern route, would soon invade the border in force. An edict granted ten thousand taels of silver and ordered Baosi and Bo to conclude an alliance with the Lu Ghost State. Xu Qingsou was stripped of his grand academician title at the Hall for Promoting Governance and his stipend; Wang Ye was stripped of his Duanming Hall academician title and stipend, and also deprived of chief-minister perquisites. On dingwei the Great White Star appeared in daylight. An edict strictly reinforced the garrison at Laoshu Pass. The Xiang and Fan frontier commanders reported victory. On jiayin the Ministry of Rites granted the presented scholar Wen Tianxiang and six hundred one others passage of the examinations and entry into service in varying degrees.

In the sixth month, on jiaxu, Zhu Disun was appointed secretary of the Palace Treasury Office and prefect of Lu Prefecture, concurrent Tongchuan circuit pacification commissioner, with responsibility for the border defense of Lu, Xu, and Changning. The Zhejiang dikes were finished. On guiwei Dong Huai was dismissed from office. Censor Ding Daquan had repeatedly memorialized against him in language of extreme slander, and moreover used a censorial warrant to press corner troops into service at midnight to drive Huai out of the pass; public opinion was greatly shocked; students of the three academies repeatedly submitted memorials on the matter; an edict appointed Huai grand academician of the Hall for Viewing Culture and superintendent of the Cave of Heaven Abbey in Lin'an Prefecture. An edict directed Cheng Yuanfeng and Cai Kang to take turns handling affairs and to seek imperial decisions on weighty military and state matters. On dinghai the Great White Star entered the Well constellation.

In the seventh month of autumn, on jiayin, Xu Prefecture prefect Shi Jun mobilized naval forces and fought Great Yuan troops in thirteen engagements; an edict advanced Jun three ranks and additionally granted him attendant gateway envoy for proclamation. On yimao Cheng Yuanfeng was appointed Right Chancellor and concurrent commissioner of military affairs; Cai Kang associate director of the Department of State Affairs; and Zhang Pan academician of the Duanming Hall and associate signatory of the Bureau of Military Affairs.

In the eighth month, on jiazi, Cheng Yuanfeng submitted a memorial on eight matters: rectifying the heart, treating ministers, advancing the worthy, loving the people, preparing the border, upholding law, exercising caution in minutiae, and scrutinizing commands.

In the ninth month, on renchen, the Lü Gao Man chieftains Ning Mingtian and his brothers, drawn by righteousness, joined forces with the Wusu tribes to defend the state in crisis; an edict appointed each Gentleman for Trustworthiness. On bingshen Cheng Fei, prefect of Yong Prefecture, was stripped of two ranks and dismissed for greed and cruelty. On jiayin Supervising Censor Zhu Yi said: "The realm's territory has shrunk while tax levies grow daily; officials increase while fiscal outlays expand daily. In the Jingde and Qingli eras, the revenues of more than three hundred twenty prefectures supplied the stipends of more than ten thousand officers; today the resources of little more than one hundred prefectures must support more than twenty-four thousand superfluous officials. In border prefectures there are additional assessments and tax transfers, while inner prefectures fall short on regular tax deliveries. To ease the people's burden, superfluous personnel must be cut. The emperor accepted the proposal. In the tenth month of winter, on renxu, the Moon transgressed the Dipper constellation.

On the new moon of the eleventh month, wuzi, Jing and Xiang frontier commanders submitted battle achievements; an edict ordered rewards for officers and soldiers. On wuxu Jing-Hu subsequently submitted reports of military achievements. An edict stated: "Sichuan has suffered warfare; our people are deeply afflicted; they should be encouraged to return and soothed so that they may settle and prosper. Yet it is now heard that officials wildly extort, greatly failing the intent of nurturing the state's foundation. From now on the Sichuan commissioner shall admonish subordinate prefectures; violators shall be punished without pardon, and the Censorate shall strictly oversee. On yisi, on the impeachment of supervising censors Wu Yan and Weng Yingbi, eight Imperial University and martial students including Liu Fu were found unruly; an edict ordered them confined under supervision in Jiangxi and Hunan prefectures and armies; seven imperial clan students including Yu Xun were struck from the rolls and confined under supervision at the Outer Imperial Clan Office. On guichou Zhang Pan was appointed vice commissioner of the Bureau of Military Affairs; Ding Daquan academician of the Duanming Hall and associate signatory of the Bureau of Military Affairs; and Ma Tianji academician of the Duanming Hall and concurrent associate signatory of the Bureau of Military Affairs. An edict admonished all officials to cleanse their hearts and discipline their conduct and not indulge in bribes; those who did not reform would face the established law of the Chunxi era. Further, among descendants of meritorious ministers since the founding, those who passed down their virtue generation after generation yet did not inherit stipends were to be reported by their prefectures. Associate Director Cai Kang abruptly left the capital without authorization; though urged to stay he did not return; an edict granted him office with stipend only, but soon on Lin Cun's memorial the order was suspended. On the new moon of the twelfth month, wuwu, Mars transgressed Saturn. On gengshen the Great Yuan fortified Zaoyang. On yichou Zhang Pan was additionally appointed associate director of the Department of State Affairs. On jiaxu an imperial commendation praised Jing frontier commander Wu Yuan; meritorious officers and soldiers were ordered to submit their names and merit ranks promptly for reward.

In the second month, on wuwu, Jiading in Sichuan reported military achievements. Jia Sidao was appointed pacification commissioner for both Huai circuits. On xinyou Zhao Kui was ordered to serve concurrently as Hu-Guang fiscal commissioner, and Yu Hui as Huaixi fiscal commissioner. On renxu three passes in Si Prefecture were fortified. On dingchou commoners Yu Yifei and Gao Qi presented strategies for defending Xiangyang; an edict ordered Zhao Kui to implement them.

In the fourth month of summer, on dingmao, an edict ordered Xiangyang pacification commissioner Gao Da, for merit at the White River battle, transferred to Right Martial Grandee and granted acting remote-prefecture defense commissioner; Wang Deng, for supervising battle at the Zu River, was advanced one rank, promoted to direct secretariat, and retained his duties. On jimao Great Yuan troops attacked Kuchu Pass; an edict ordered Jing-Hu to mobilize troops to reinforce the defense. In the intercalary fourth month, on jichou, Cheng Yuanfeng and others presented the Jade Genealogy, the Calendar, the Imperial Collections, the Essentials of Military Classics, and the Annals and Biographies of the Four Restoration Reigns. On jiawu an edict ordered Xu Minzi to strictly defend Yong and Yi prefectures. On jiyou Lü Wende was appointed prefect of Jing Prefecture, retaining his duties. The court offered prayers for rain.

In the fifth month, on gengshen, rain fell. On dingmao Jingshan was fortified; Huaiyuan Army and Jingshan County were established. An edict advanced Jia Sidao two ranks in office. On wuyin an edict ordered Jing-Hu, the Yangzi coast, and the maritime routes to ready their naval forces for strict defense and interdiction. On xinsi Jianmen fortress was recovered; Pu Zezhi was promoted two ranks, and Zhu Suisun, Pu Fu, Yang Dayuan, and Han Yong were each promoted four ranks. On renwu Xia Gui was formally appointed prefect of Ji Prefecture, bearer of Imperial Arms, overall controller garrisoned at Zhenjiang, and commander of Huaiyuan Army.

In the sixth month, on bingxu, Venus and Jupiter conjoined in the Wings constellation. On xinmao the Moon entered the Root constellation. On dingyou the court offered prayers for rain. On jichou Pi Longrong was additionally appointed assistant tutor of the Hall for Nurturing Goodness. On gengyin Tao Lin submitted a report on the battle merit at Zhaoshan Temple. On guisi Xiang Shibi repeatedly submitted reports of merit. On yiwei an edict granted Zhou Zhenyan examination success in the fourth rank.
