The encomium reads: Lizong enjoyed a long reign, equal to that of Renzong. Yet in Renzong's time worthy chief ministers succeeded one another. During Lizong's forty years, worthy men such as Li Zongmian, Cui Zhizhi, and Wu Qian were never fully put to use; while Shi Miyuan, Ding Daquan, and Jia Sidao usurped power and favor, serving as chief ministers from beginning to end. That his governance fell short of the Qingli and Jiayou eras was only to be expected. In the Caizhou campaign, he was fortunate to rely on the Great Court to settle a strategy of converging attack; when Shouxu's bones were sent in a casket and the chief minister Tiangang was captured and presented at the ancestral temple, he might have washed away the shame of Kuaiji and avenged the wrong done to Duke Xiang of Qi. Yet he grew greedy for territory and abandoned the alliance; the army sent into Luoyang provoked fresh incidents, war bred disaster upon disaster, and the realm shrank day by day. When Hao Jing came as envoy, Sidao concealed his offer of tribute and plea for peace, deceived and obstructed the court, detained him without reply, and thus hastened the dynasty's ruin. Alas, what a pity! From his middle years his appetites multiplied, he grew slack in government, power passed to treacherous ministers, and lectures on nature and fate at the classics mat amounted to empty talk that truly did no good. Nevertheless, since the Jiading era, orthodox and heterodox learning had been confused and national policy unsettled; from the time this emperor succeeded he first removed Wang Anshi from Confucian temple sacrifices, elevated the nine scholars of Lian and Luo, and honored Zhu Xi's Four Books, greatly transforming scholarly custom—compared with the previous dynasty's stele of treacherous factions and ban on heterodox learning, was this not a world apart! He himself stood in a declining age and achieved little in his lifetime, yet if later ages should restore the governance of ancient emperors through Neo-Confucian learning, those who weigh the merit of upright assistance will find that it truly began with this emperor. His temple name is Li, and it is perhaps not far from the mark!
