The Horn Lodge comprises two stars that serve as the Celestial Gate; the space between them is the Heavenly Gate, and the region within is the Celestial Court. The ecliptic therefore runs through them, for this is the path along which the Seven Luminaries move. The left Horn is identified with the Celestial Field and with judicial administration; it presides over penal matters. South of it lies the Solar Path. The right Horn represents the commander and presides over military affairs. North of it lies the Lunar Path. They function as the three gates of Heaven, analogous to the four boundary markers of the Room Lodge. When the stars shine bright and large, the omen is favorable—the royal Way is tranquil and worthy ministers hold office at court. Trembling or shifting of the stars portends that the sovereign will go on campaign or tour. A red, brilliant left Horn indicates that legal cases will be resolved and prisons emptied. If they are dim and faint, the royal Way has fallen into disorder. Tao Hongjing wrote: "The left Horn is the Celestial Ford, the right Horn the Heavenly Gate, and between them lies the Celestial Gate." A solar eclipse in the Horn Lodge bodes ill for the sovereign. A halo appearing within the Horn signals clandestine intrigue; a northern or yin-aligned state will take the field and seize territory, and the omen also governs a general pardon. When the moon encroaches upon the Horn, senior ministers grow anxious over legal cases and judicial officials fear removal from office. The omen further indicates distress within the inner palace. A lunar halo portends the outbreak of war in the corresponding territorial division. As for the right Horn, calamity befalls the commander of the right wing. The same applies to the left. According to another interpretation, it presides over floods and water disasters. A yellow hue signals a general amnesty. A triple lunar halo reaching the Heavenly Gate and both Horns portends the outbreak of war and defeat for commanders in the field. Jupiter's encroachment upon the Horn foretells famine. Mars's trespass upon the Horn indicates national decline and military defeat. Encroachment upon the left Horn portends a pardon or amnesty. Encroachment upon the right Horn signals the outbreak of war. When Mars halts there, slanderous officials gain influence and government affairs turn pressing. If it occupies the yang side, the omen brings good fortune. Saturn's encroachment upon the Horn portends mourning; according to another tradition, it signals the outbreak of war. Venus's trespass upon the Horn indicates that ministers harbor subversive designs. Mercury's encroachment portends skirmishing or small-scale conflict. When Mercury halts there, catastrophic flooding is foretold. A guest star's encroachment portends war and damage to the harvest. If it halts at the left Horn and appears red, drought will follow. If it halts at the right Horn, great flooding is foretold. A comet encroaching upon the Horn, if white in color, portends war. If red, the direction it points will see armies shattered in defeat. If it emerges from the Horn, warfare and disorder will spread across the empire. A broom star appearing at the Horn, if white, portends war. If red, armies will suffer defeat. If it enters the Celestial Market Enclosure, both war and mourning are foretold. A meteor striking the Horn portends the arrival of embassies from foreign lands. If it enters and strikes the left Horn, war will break out. Yellow-white vapors entering the right Horn portend the seizure of territory. Red vapor entering the left Horn signals the outbreak of war. Red vapor entering the right Horn portends victory in battle. Black-and-white vapors entering the right Horn foretell defeat for armies and their commanders.

According to the Yongyuan-era bronze armillary sphere of the Han, the Horn Lodge was measured at thirteen degrees. In the Kaiyuan touring armillary of the Tang, however, the two stars of the Horn were reckoned at twelve degrees. Earlier texts recorded a polar distance of ninety-one degrees, whereas the present measurement yields ninety-three and a half degrees. The determining star lies directly on the celestial equator, while the ecliptic runs south of the equator and does not pass through the center of the Horn. Current observations place the Horn two and a half degrees south of the equator, with the ecliptic once again passing through its center, in agreement with the actual heavens. The Jingyou survey measured the two stars of the Horn at twelve degrees, with the southern star at a polar distance of ninety-seven degrees, six degrees south of the equator, in agreement with the New Book of the Supernal Image; the New Book is now adopted as the standard.
4
The Southern Gate comprises two stars south of the Arsenal Tower; it is the outer gate of Heaven and presides over garrison forces and martial prohibitions. When the stars shine bright, distant peoples will come bearing tribute. When dim, frontier peoples will rise in rebellion. The appearance of minor stars within them portends military mobilization. Guest stars or comets halting there foretell the outbreak of war.
5
The Arsenal Tower consists of ten stars—six major stars forming the arsenal and four southern stars forming the tower—located south of the Horn Lodge. It is also known as the Celestial Arsenal, the treasury of war chariots and weapons. Fifteen adjacent stars, clustered in groups of three, form the pillars, while four small central stars constitute the crossbeam. When the stars show rayed points, war will break out. If stars disappear, ministers and subordinates will turn rebellious. If they shift position, commanders will take the field. When the stars appear full and bright, the omen is favorable. When they appear hollow or faint, the omen is dire. Jupiter's encroachment upon the Arsenal Tower portends war. Mars's encroachment foretells both war and drought. The moon's entry into the Arsenal Tower portends war. Comets or broom stars entering the lodge foretell war and famine. A guest star's entry portends the mobilization of frontier forces. A meteor entering the lodge signals the full mobilization of military forces. Red vapors entering the lodge portend unrest within the court and across the borders. When the Celestial Arsenal stars develop rayed points, war will follow.
6
The Level Stars comprise two stars north of the Arsenal Tower and south of the Horn; they preside over the equitable administration of law and penal affairs throughout the realm, symbolizing the Minister of Justice. When properly aligned and bright, legal cases will be adjudicated fairly. A lunar halo portends anxiety among judicial officials. Mars's encroachment signals war but also foretells a general pardon. A comet's encroachment indicates that policy will not be carried out and judicial officials will be removed from office.
7
The Level Road comprises two stars situated between the stars of the Horn Lodge; it presides over officials charged with maintaining the imperial highways. Wu Mi wrote: "This is the thoroughfare by which the Son of Heaven reaches in all eight directions; it governs carriage tracks and axles." When bright and properly aligned, the omen is favorable. Trembling or shifting portends danger to the sovereign's traveling carriage. When Jupiter halts there, the empire will be well governed. Mars or Venus halting there portends rebellion and disorder. A guest star halting there foretells that the sovereign will travel abroad. A meteor halting there portends the dismissal of worthy men and the elevation of treacherous officials.
8
The Celestial Field comprises two stars north of the Horn; it presides over the territorial domains within the capital precincts. Wu Mi identified it as the Son of Heaven's ceremonial plowing field. When Jupiter halts there, the harvest will be abundant. Mars halting there portends drought. Venus halting there foretells damage to the crops. Mercury halting there portends flooding and water-related calamities. A guest star halting there foretells drought and locust plagues.
9
The Heavenly Gate comprises two stars north of the Level Stars. Wu Mi wrote that it lies south of the left Horn and is the place where the court receives envoys and hosts guests. When the stars shine bright, all regions will submit and be brought into civilized order. When dim, hostile forces from beyond the borders will arrive. A lunar halo appearing outside the Heavenly Gate portends the outbreak of war. When Mars enters the Heavenly Gate, frontier passes and bridges will be blocked. If it halts there, ritual propriety will be violated. Venus halting there portends troops lying in ambush. A guest star crossing the gate signifies a plot against the throne.
10
Promoting the Worthy is a single star west of the Level Road; it governs the elevation of outstanding talent by ministers and chancellors. When bright, worthy men will be employed; When dim, corrupt ministers will gain advancement. When the moon or Jupiter crosses it, great ministers will die. Mars crossing it portends mourning, and worthy men will withdraw from public life. Venus crossing it foretells the withdrawal of worthy men from office. When Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, and Mercury jointly halt there, the omen indicates that the Son of Heaven is seeking worthy men. Yellow-white or purple vapors threading through it signify that worthy men dwelling in obscurity will emerge.
11
The Zhou Tripod comprises three stars above the Horn Lodge; they preside over the demise of ruling houses. When the stars shine bright, the realm will be secure; If they are not visible, dynastic fortune will not flourish; If they tremble and shift, the state is about to undergo transformation. The New Book of the Supernal Image cites the casting of the tripod at Xie and Ruo, explaining that when Zhou declined and Qin's rule turned corrupt, the tripod sank in the Si River and its essence rose to become stars. Li Taiyi remarked: "Wu Xian the Shang diviner's 《Star Chart》 already recorded the Zhou Tripod, presumably several centuries before the Qin."
12
According to the 《Song of Pacing the Heavens》, the Arsenal Tower has ten stars, the Pillars fifteen, the Balance four, the Level Stars, Level Road, Heavenly Field, and Heavenly Gate two each, Promoting the Worthy one, and the Zhou Tripod three—all assigned to the Horn Lodge. The 《Jin Treatise》, however, identifies the left Horn as the Heavenly Field and omits the two Heavenly Field stars altogether; the 《Sui Treatise》 includes them. In the 《Jin Treatise》, the Level Road, Promoting the Worthy, and Zhou Tripod all belong to the Supreme Palace Enclosure, while the Arsenal Tower together with the Balance stars, Pillar stars, Southern Gate, Heavenly Gate, and Level Stars all fall outside the Twenty-eight Lodges. Only with Tang Wu Mi and the Jingyou astronomical treatise did the reckoning again accord with the 《Song of Pacing the Heavens》.

The Neck Lodge comprises four stars forming the Son of Heaven's inner court, where all memorials from the realm are received and processed. It governs hearing lawsuits, administering prisons, and recording merit. It is also known as the Dispersed Temple and presides over epidemic disease. When the stars shine bright and large, assistants prove loyal and the people live in security; if they stir, widespread illness will follow. It marks the Son of Heaven's proper seat and serves as the Heavenly tally. If it is not visible at the autumn equinox, the harvest will suffer and grain prices will soar. When the sun crosses the Neck Lodge, feudal lords will plot against the state and the ruler will be troubled. When the moon crosses it, the ruler will be troubled or a great minister will bear the omen; an appearance on the left portends flooding, on the right, warfare. A lunar halo in its allotted region means whoever raises troops first will prevail; if it occurs in winter, eminent men will suffer distress. Jupiter crossing it portends an amnesty and a successful harvest; if it halts there, warfare will arise and many will fall ill; if it remains thirty days or longer, an amnesty will be proclaimed; Another account states: "If it trespasses, rebellious ministers will stir up disorder. When Mars crosses it, dwelling in the yang sector brings rejoicing; in the yin sector, sorrow; if it shows rays and horn-like projections, eminent men will find the omen dire; a prolonged halt brings popular distress, heavy rains, and warfare as well. Saturn crossing it foretells damaged crops and widespread death among the people; if it moves retrograde, women will dominate government and rebellious ministers will plot; if it halts there, warfare will break out. Venus crossing it portends the fall of the state and calamity for the people; if it moves retrograde, military disorder will ensue; if it displays rays and horn-like projections, noble ministers will be executed; if it halts there, flood or drought will strike, or mourning will descend upon the realm. Mercury crossing it portends flooding and also the mobilization of great armies; if it halts there, rice will grow costly, the people will sicken, the year will be drought-stricken, bandits will rise, and the populace will turn against one another. A guest star crossing it means the state will be unsettled; if its color is red, war and drought; if yellow, public earthworks; if green-black, envoys will suffer distress; if it halts there, the harvest will be harmed. One account adds that an amnesty decree will be issued; if black, the people will flee and scatter. A comet crossing it portends calamity for the state; when it departs, flooding, armies, epidemic, and ministerial rebellion will follow; if white, mourning. A broom star crossing it endangers the state and portends both flooding and warfare; when it enters, the people will flee; when it departs, that state will suffer famine. A shooting star entering portends the arrival of foreign envoys and a ripening harvest; when one departs, the Son of Heaven will dispatch envoys and issue an amnesty decree. Li Chunfeng wrote: "When a shooting star enters the Neck Lodge, favored ministers will die. When cloud-vapor crosses it, a blue-green hue portends epidemic among the people; if white, public earthworks; if black, flooding; if red, warfare. One account states: if white, the people will suffer cruel epidemic illness; if yellow, public earthworks.

According to the 《Song of Pacing the Heavens》, Great Horn has one star, Breaking Might seven, the left and right Pacing the Timbers six in all, Slow Stubborn and Solar Gate two each—all assigned to the Horn Lodge. The 《Jin Treatise》, however, assigns Great Horn and Pacing the Timbers to the Supreme Palace Enclosure, while Breaking Might and Slow Stubborn fall outside the Twenty-eight Lodges. Solar Gate appears in the 《Sui Treatise》, but the 《Jin History》 omits it altogether. Wu Mi's treatise assigns Pacing the Timbers, Breaking Might, and Solar Gate alike to the Horn and Neck Lodges. The 《New Book of the Supernal Image》 assigns the right Pacing the Timbers to the Horn Lodge and the left to the Neck Lodge; on all else it agrees with Wu Mi's treatise. The 《Jingyou》 survey measurements, however, assign Great Horn, Pacing the Timbers, Slow Stubborn, and Solar Gate all to the Neck Lodge, so the reckonings do not agree.

The southern two stars mark the ruler's station; the northern two mark the consort's station. It also serves as the Four Markers; within lie the Heavenly Crossroads and the Heavenly Gate, along which the ecliptic runs. The southern gap is called the Yang Ring; south of it lies the Great Yang; the northern gap is called the Yin Ring; north of it lies the Great Yin. The upper first star is the queen consort; the next three are the ladies; the remaining stars are concubines. It also represents the Nine Sons. If they shine evenly bright, large and small succeeding one another, the inner palace will be ordered and sons and grandsons will flourish. If bright, the consort will have cause for joy and grain will ripen; If not bright, the consort will suffer distress and grain will fail. A solar eclipse in its allotted region portends illness among generals; in Yan, wind and sand; armies and mourning; distress in the inner palace; and the ruler is warned against going forth. A solar halo portends mourning for the chief consort and distress for generals and chancellors. A lunar eclipse in its allotted region portends punishment for noble ministers and distress in the inner palace. If Great Yin trespasses it, ministers will fall out of harmony and generals will face trouble. If Saturn trespasses it and its color is yellow, consorts will rejoice; If it enters, armies, famine, and bandits will follow; If it moves retrograde, a concubine will become the ruling woman; If it dwells upon it showing rays and horns, the ruling house will change and government will be transformed.
