The Kui Lodge comprises sixteen stars. Known as Heaven's Arsenal—and also as the Celestial Boar or the Sealed Boar—it presides over the use of arms to suppress violence and over ditches and waterways alike. The bright star in the southwest is termed the Eye of the Celestial Boar, or alternatively the Great General. When it shines brightly and stirs, great armies rise and floods break out. A solar eclipse portends disaster for Lu, the mobilization of frontier troops, and both flood and drought. A halo around the sun foretells war and conflagration. A lunar eclipse brings anxiety to ministers who amass riches. A halo around the moon presages military defeat, soaring grain prices, the execution of generals, and widespread pestilence among the people. When the moon encroaches upon it, the territory under its jurisdiction falls into turmoil. When Jupiter encroaches upon it, intimate ministers turn traitorous; if it stations there, insect plagues strike, the people go hungry, banditry spreads, and lawsuits multiply; if it remains long, armies of the north submit; if its hue is rich and bright, the harvest is bountiful; if it holds position for twenty days or longer, war breaks out in Lu; if it moves retrograde and stations there, the ruler grows fond of war and the people scatter into exile. When Mars encroaches upon it and circles the lodge for thirty days or more, disaster befalls generals and chancellors alike, great floods inundate the land, and the people flee; if it holds position for twenty days or longer, war erupts in Lu; if it wavers and shifts forward or back, an amnesty is proclaimed; if it comes to rest there, the year's harvest is plentiful; if it lingers, subordinates seize power and lawsuits abound; if it holds position for a hundred days or longer, banditry flourishes. When Saturn enters and encroaches upon it, Wu and Yue see warfare—though some texts read Qi and Lu, and others war and mourning; if it stations there, a woman of rank takes the reins of government; as it enters and departs, springs and streams burst their banks. When Venus encroaches upon it, great floods strike, armies mobilize, and killing frost destroys the crops; if it enters the lodge, foreign troops invade the realm; if it appears by day, generals and chancellors perish. When Mercury encroaches upon it, rivers break their dikes, armies take the field, and both drought and fire afflict the land. If it stations there, the sovereign is beset with anxiety, war, and drought. When a guest star encroaches upon it, works on ditches and waterways are undertaken; if it holds position there, the sovereign is troubled, the army is routed, and treacherous ministers lurk at his elbow; if it enters the lodge, armies are shattered and generals cut down; if it comes to rest and does not leave, the people go hungry; if it departs, scheming ministers lead the Son of Heaven astray. When a comet encroaches upon it, famine strikes, and war and mourning follow; if it emerges, flood disasters ensue. When a broom star strikes it, armies march forth beneath it, the people starve, and the realm lacks a successor; if it emerges, warfare breaks out in the northwest. When a meteor enters and encroaches upon it, works on ditches and waterways are launched, and armies are shattered while generals are slain. According to the Yisi Occupations: when a meteor enters and exits with a yellow hue and a bright, lustrous white light, literary culture thrives and arms are stilled; if crimson like firelight and sounding as it passes, bows and crossbows are brought into use; another reading holds that its entry portends mass gatherings. When crimson cloud vapor enters and encroaches, war follows; if yellow, the Son of Heaven has cause for joy; if black, great men are beset with anxiety.

According to the Han dynasty's Yongyuan bronze armillary sphere, the Kui Lodge was measured at seventeen degrees; the Tang Kaiyuan itinerant armillary gave it as sixteen degrees. The earlier measurement placed it seventy-six degrees from the celestial pole; the Jingyou-era survey yielded the same result.
4
The Celestial Privy comprises seven stars lying south of the Outer Screen. It presides over Heaven's privy—the place where pigs are kept—and is also known as Heaven's latrine. when dim, the people are unsettled; when it shifts from its place, anxiety spreads.
5
The Earth Director is a single star south of the Horn asterism. Also known as the Celestial Granary, it presides over all matters pertaining to earth and soil. Whenever walled cities are planned, canals dredged, and embankments repaired, its influence weighs the benefit and establishes the merit of the work. The lesser and greater achievements of the four quarters are tallied, and at year's end their rankings are reported so that rewards and punishments may be dispensed. When the star is large and its hue yellow, the realm enjoys tranquility. When the five planets encroach upon it, men and women alike are unable to plow the fields or tend the looms. When a comet or guest star encroaches upon it, flood and drought afflict the land, the people scatter, war erupts on a grand scale, and great earthworks are launched. If a guest star holds position there, major earthworks are undertaken and mourning fills the land. When yellow cloud vapor enters the lodge, great earthworks begin and the capital is relocated.
6
The Reins is a single star north of Wangliang. It represents the Son of Heaven's groom and presides over holding the reins and managing the chariot. When a meteor, comet, broom star, or guest star encroaches upon it, great armies invariably rise and the Son of Heaven himself takes command in the field; if it draws near, conspirators foment rebellion below.
7
The Attached Road is a single star—called Attached Road, though one text gives the name as Coached Road—lying south of the Palace Road; it marks a separate thoroughfare. One account places it east of Wangliang; it presides over the Grandee of the Household and over the management of wind and rain. when it shows rays and horns, chariots and cavalry fill the countryside; when the star vanishes, the road network is disrupted; when it is incomplete, war breaks out. When Venus and Mars enter the lodge, war erupts. When a comet or broom star encroaches upon it, the roads become impassable. When a guest star enters, horses fall in price. When pale cloud vapor enters, the Grandee of the Household is beset with anxiety; if crimson, the Grandee of the Household is put to death; if yellow-white, the Grandee of the Household receives imperial favor; if black, the Grandee of the Household meets his death.
8

The Palace Road comprises six stars before Wangliang. It is a celestial flyway stretching from the Purple Palace to the chariot of the River God. One account holds that it governs the route of the palanquin pavilion—the path by which the Son of Heaven travels to his detached palaces. when the stars are not visible, the palanquin route is blocked; when they tremble, armed conflict erupts within the inner palace. When a comet, broom star, or guest star encroaches upon them, the ruler's hold on the realm is shaken and mourning follows. When white cloud vapor enters, urgent affairs arise; if black, the ruler falls ill; if yellow, the Son of Heaven has cause for celebration.
9
Wangliang comprises five stars north of Kui, situated amid the river. It represents the Son of Heaven's officer in charge of the imperial chariot and its drivers. Four of its stars form the Celestial Team of Four; the star beside them is Wangliang, also known as the Celestial Horse Star. When it stirs, chariots and horsemen cover the countryside. One account identifies it as the Celestial Bridge, presiding over wind, rain, and waterways. When the stars are incomplete, or a guest star holds position there, ferries and bridges cease to function. When it lies close to the Palace Road, rivers undergo sudden change. when the stars shine brightly, horses become cheap; when dim, horses suffer calamity. When Venus and Mars enter and hold position there, war breaks out. When a comet or guest star encroaches upon it, war and mourning follow, and bridges throughout the realm become impassable. When a meteor encroaches upon it, great armies are about to march. When azure cloud vapor enters and encroaches upon it, the Wangliang officer who tends the chariot fears a fall from the vehicle. When the cloud vapor turns crimson, the Wangliang officer faces the threat of axe and block.

The Outer Screen comprises seven stars south of Kui. It presides over screening off foul and noxious matter.
11
The Army's South Gate lies south of the Celestial Great General—it is the southern gate of that asterism. It presides over challenging and inspecting those who pass in and out. when the stars are dim, foreign states rebel; when they tremble, war breaks out; when bright, distant lands send tribute.
12
According to the Song of Pacing the Heavens, all the stars described above belong to the Kui Lodge. When checked against the Jin Treatise, Wangliang, the Attached Road, the Palace Road, the Army's South Gate, and the Reins star all belonged to the Celestial Market Enclosure, and asterisms such as the Outer Screen, Celestial Privy, and Earth Director did not yet appear—the Sui Treatise is the first to record them. Wumu, however, placed Wangliang, the Outer Screen, and the Celestial Privy all within the Wall Lodge, though some authorities also assigned the Outer Screen to the Kui Lodge. According to the 《New Writings on the Celestial Appearances》, one star west of Wangliang belonged to the Wall Lodge and four to the east to Kui; one star west of the Outer Screen to Wall and six to the east to Kui—arrangements that diverge in each case from the 《Song of Pacing the Heavens》.

The Lou Lodge comprises three stars known as Heaven's Prison. It presides over parklands, livestock, and victims for suburban rites, and also over mustering troops and assembling the people. When the stars shine bright and large, taxation and collection proceed on schedule. When the stars stand upright, someone holds the ruler's mandate; When they cluster close together, the realm falls into unrest. A solar eclipse in the Lou Lodge portends disaster for the chancellor and eminent officials, and the gods of suburban sacrifice will not receive the offerings. A halo around the sun foretells war and the death of many eminent men. A lunar eclipse brings anxiety to queens and consorts in the lodge's jurisdiction and famine among the people. A halo around the moon in spring presages an amnesty within one hundred eighty days, but also soaring grain prices—rain within three days will lift the omen. When the moon encroaches upon it, hunting increases, the lodge's territory is troubled, generals perish, and the people scatter. Another interpretation holds that wrongful imprisonments multiply. When Jupiter encroaches upon it, cattle die in great numbers, rice grows cheap, and an amnesty is proclaimed; if it stations there, the realm enjoys security—or, by another account, pestilence spreads among the people, livestock prices soar, and wars end on their own. When Mars both encroaches upon and stations in the Lou Lodge, drought and fire follow and grain grows costly; Another account adds that if Mars remains twenty days or longer, high ministers die. When the star stirs, deaths among the people multiply; If it moves retrograde into the chenggou-si hook configuration, the state granaries suffer calamity. When Saturn encroaches upon it, the Son of Heaven is warned to secure the frontiers, refrain from distant journeys, and avoid taking the field at the head of armies; if it stations there, harvests are plentiful and the people are content; if it moves retrograde, meddling women of the inner quarters come to the fore; If it tarries within the Lou Lodge, armies from abroad arrive. When Venus encroaches upon it, the people are mustered for collective action; if it stations there, war breaks out within thirty days and the people go hungry. When Mercury encroaches upon it, punishments grow harsh, floods and droughts multiply, and ministers are anxious until the ruler issues an amnesty to lift the omen; If it stations there showing rays, trembling, and a red-black hue, subordinates take up arms. When a guest star encroaches upon it, major warfare erupts; if it stations there, the five grains fail to mature—or, by another reading, ministers bewilder the ruler, seize power, and lawsuits abound throughout the year; If it circles the lodge for three days, a general amnesty is proclaimed. When a comet encroaches upon it, the people perish in famine; As it departs, drought gives way to flood, grain prices soar, livestock fall ill, and storehouses stand empty—or, by another account, the realm mobilizes for great war. A broom star in this lodge's jurisdiction portends war and famine. When a meteor appears and encroaches upon it, new statutes are issued and the prisons are purged. When azure and crimson cloud vapor enters the lodge, war and mourning follow; If the vapor is black, great floods ensue.
14
According to the Han dynasty's Yongyuan bronze armillary sphere, the Lou Lodge measured twelve degrees; the Tang Kaiyuan itinerant armillary gave thirteen. Earlier measurements placed it eighty degrees from the celestial pole. The Jingyou-era survey found the Lou Lodge at twelve degrees, its central bright star eighty degrees from the pole and eleven degrees south of the equator.
15
The Celestial Granary comprises six stars south of the Lou Lodge, holding the grain reserves upon which the state depends. When the stars lie close and thick, the harvest ripens and grain accumulates; When they are distant and sparse, the omen is reversed.
16
When the moon encroaches upon it, the ruler releases grain from the stores. When any of the five planets encroaches upon it, war breaks out, famine stalks the year, and grain is drawn from the granaries. When Mars and Venus jointly station there, armies are shattered and generals perish. When Mars enters the asterism, armies convoy grain a thousand li; If it draws near, drought afflicts the realm. When Venus encroaches upon it, foreigners turn on one another and armies mobilize in the northwest. Mercury stationing there brings great floods; a guest star or comet encroaching upon it means the five grains fail to mature. When a guest star enters, famine grips the year and grain prices soar. When a meteor enters showing crimson, war follows; if it encroaches upon the asterism, grain is dispatched under arms; If its hue is yellow-white, the year brings an abundant harvest. When pale azure cloud vapor enters, famine stalks the year; If crimson, war and drought follow, and the storehouses suffer calamity; If yellow-white, the year ripens to abundance.
17
The Right Elder comprises five stars west of the Lou Lodge. Named for a Qin noble rank, it presides over the herdsman officer and over ritual propriety. When the asterism is incomplete, travel and communication across the realm are cut off. When Venus and Mars encroach upon and station in the Right Elder, warfare erupts in the hills and marshes.
18
The Left Elder comprises five stars east of the Lou Lodge. Also a Qin noble title for the mountain warden, it presides over forests, marshes, bamboo, timber, garden produce, and the virtues of benevolence and wisdom. Its omens match those of the Right Elder.
19
The Celestial Great General comprises eleven stars north of the Lou Lodge and presides over military forces. Its central bright star is Heaven's supreme commander; the surrounding lesser stars are his officers and troops. When they tremble, war breaks out and the commander takes the field; If the lesser stars quiver or the formation is incomplete, armies likewise mobilize; When the banner flies upright, the force prevails wherever it strikes. When any of the five planets encroaches upon and stations in the asterism, the commander faces grave anxiety. When a guest star stations there, the commander grows uneasy and his officers are ruined by hunger. When a meteor enters the asterism, the commander is troubled. When pale azure cloud vapor encroaches upon it, troops are ravaged by disease; If crimson, armies take the field.
20
The Celestial Open Granary comprises four stars southeast of the Celestial Granary and presides over grain stored in the open air. Its omens match those of the Celestial Granary.
21
The 《Jin Treatise》 places the Celestial Granary and Celestial Open Granary beyond the Twenty-eight Lodges, assigns the Celestial Great General to the Celestial Market Enclosure, and records the Left and Right Elders only in the 《Sui Treatise》. The 《New Writings on the Celestial Appearances》 places the Celestial Granary within the Kui Lodge. Wumu likewise assigned it to Kui, and again to Lou. The 《Song of Pacing the Heavens》 places them all within the Lou Lodge.
22
The Stomach Lodge comprises three stars forming Heaven's kitchen storehouse. It presides over the state granaries—the treasury of the five grains. When bright, the realm enjoys peace, the granaries are stocked, and the people rest secure; When they stir, grain is transported across the land. When dim, the storehouses stand empty; When they cluster close, grain prices rise and the people scatter; When the central stars are thick, grain accumulates; When the stars appear small, grain is dispersed; When they flare with rays, war breaks out. A solar eclipse portends the execution of high ministers—or, by one reading, scarcity of food, widespread disease in the lodge's territory, and grain that fails to fill the ear—or, by another, the dispatch of tribute and supplies. A halo around the sun means the grain will not mature. A lunar eclipse brings anxiety to the queen, the death of generals, famine, and fault upon the suburban rites. A halo around the moon means the side that strikes first will be defeated, pregnant women die in great numbers—and, by another account, the ruler perishes, heavy rains fall, hills collapse, and armies are shattered. When Jupiter stands within the halo, the Son of Heaven issues benevolent edicts. A lunar halo in the first month of each season presages an amnesty. When Mars stands within the halo, war follows. When the moon encroaches upon it, neighboring states erupt in violence, famine spreads across the realm, foreign powers are anxious, grain fails to ripen, and disease ravages the people; If the moon changes color, generals meet with disaster. When Jupiter encroaches upon it, eminent men are troubled and armies mobilize; if it stations there, the realm prospers; if it enters the lodge, imperial orders are revised and prisons stand empty across the land; If it moves retrograde, the five grains fail to mature and the state exhausts its reserves. When Mars encroaches upon it, armies fall into chaos, grain is released from the stores, and the nobility are anxious; If it stations there, drought and famine follow, pestilence spreads among the people, and invading armies suffer crushing defeat; if it enters the lodge, statutes are revised and the prisons stand empty; If it advances and retreats, loops the Gou-si hook, and encroaches upon the lodge for a hundred days or longer, granaries across the land are drained bare and war breaks out. When Saturn encroaches upon it, high ministers rise in revolt; if it stations there, reserves run out, benevolent edicts are issued, and grain prices soar; if it moves retrograde and holds at the Gou-si hook, armies take the field; when it turns red, war erupts and blood is spilled; when green, the court issues benevolent edicts. When Mercury encroaches upon it, the territory under its jurisdiction is unsettled; if it stations there, armies mobilize and new feudal lords are installed; Wu Xian says, "Drought follows, the grain fails to mature, and urgent warfare breaks out." If it again moves retrograde and holds position there, the storehouses stand empty and floods afflict the land. When a guest star encroaches upon it, the sovereign is troubled and the state granaries are drawn down; if it retreats and enters the lodge, an amnesty is proclaimed; if it stations there, overmighty ministers dominate the realm and the crops fail to mature; if it crosses the lodge, fire breaks out; if it comes to rest and does not leave, the people go hungry; when it departs, the ruler of the territory under its jurisdiction is beset with anxiety. When a comet encroaches upon it, armies stir, ministers rebel, floods strike, and the harvest fails. When a broom star appears, war erupts in its territory and the sovereign regards it with dread. When a meteor encroaches upon it, the storehouses stand empty; when it shines red, conflagration follows. When pale azure vapors enter, depart, and encroach upon it, mourning and grain purchases preoccupy the realm; when black, grain in the storehouses spoils and rots; when blue-black, war breaks out; when yellow-white, the granaries are well stocked.
23
According to the Han dynasty's Yongyuan bronze armillary sphere, the Stomach Lodge measured fifteen degrees. The Jingyou-era survey gave it as fourteen degrees.
24
The Celestial Round Granary comprises thirteen stars arranged in the form of the character yi, south of the Stomach Lodge. Of the class of storehouse asterisms, it presides over provisioning the imperial granary with sacrificial grain. when the stars shine bright, harvests are plentiful; when dim, famine follows. When the moon encroaches upon it, grain is transported across the realm. When any of the five planets encroaches upon it, the storehouses stand empty. When a guest star or comet enters, the storehouses are imperiled and fire and flood bring ruin. When pale azure vapors enter, famine strikes and the people flee their homes.
25
The Great Tumulus comprises eight stars north of the Stomach Lodge. Also known as the Accumulated Capital, it presides over great funerals and widespread mourning. When the central stars are thickly clustered, feudal lords go into mourning, pestilence ravages the people, and war breaks out.
The 《Jin Treatise》 assigns the Great Tumulus, Accumulated Corpses, Celestial Boat, and Accumulated Water to the Celestial Market Enclosure, while placing the Celestial Round Granary and Celestial Granary beyond the Twenty-eight Lodges. Wumu placed the Celestial Round Granary and Great Tumulus within the Lou Lodge, and again within the Stomach Lodge; he assigned the Celestial Boat to the Stomach Lodge, and again to the Hairy Head Lodge. The 《New Writings on the Celestial Appearances》 places five stars of the Celestial Round Granary in the Lou Lodge and the rest in the Stomach Lodge, assigns the three western stars of the Great Tumulus to Lou and the five eastern stars to Stomach—each scheme at odds with the 《Song of Pacing the Heavens》.

The Hairy Head Lodge comprises seven stars—Heaven's eyes and ears. It presides over the west and over all matters of justice and imprisonment. It is also the yak-tail banner asterism, a constellation of the north, and further presides over mourning. The gap between the Hairy Head and Net Lodges forms the Celestial Street. When the Son of Heaven rides forth, the yak-tail banner and the Han-Net outriders lead the way—such is the omen's meaning. The ecliptic passes through this lodge. when bright, prisons across the land are at peace; when all six stars shine as brightly as the chief star, great floods follow. When all seven stars turn yellow, war erupts on a vast scale. When a single star vanishes, war and mourning follow. When they tremble and stir, high ministers are thrown into prison and mourners gather in white. When they swell bright and all leap and quiver as one, armies of the north mobilize on a grand scale. When a single star leaps and stirs by itself, northern forces are about to raid the frontier. A solar eclipse portends illness for the sovereign, the rise of rival branches of the imperial clan, and—by another reading—the mobilization of frontier troops. A halo around the sun means a rival power loses ground, the ruler of the north is troubled, and the Zhao region meets with disaster—or, by another account, great famine. A lunar eclipse portends the execution of high ministers, anxiety for the empress, famine, the mobilization of frontier armies, the death of generals, and rebellion in the northern marches. When the moon is ringed three times in a single year, crossbows grow costly and the people go hungry. when the halo appears in the first ten days of the first month, an amnesty is proclaimed; when it encroaches upon the lodge, famine follows, the ruler of the north is troubled, and the Son of Heaven breaks the northern forces; if its color shifts, the people flee, the realm falls, violent armies rise below, and an amnesty is proclaimed; when it emerges north of the Hairy Head Lodge, good fortune spreads across the land; when it crosses the lodge, statutes grow severe, great floods strike, and the crops fail to mature. When Jupiter encroaches upon it, the prisons stand empty; if it crosses the lodge, a rival power mobilizes and the ruler of the north is troubled; if it holds position there, the ruler presses punishments harshly and the prisons empty—or, by another reading, imprisoned ministers are set free; if it holds to the north of the lodge, benevolent edicts are issued—or, by another reading, aquatic produce fails to mature; if it holds position for long, high ministers are condemned under the law and the people go hungry; if it lingers in station, armies are shattered and generals are slain. When Mars encroaches and holds position, war follows, with drought and famine; if it holds to the east, armies mobilize in Qi, Chu, and Yue; if it holds to the south, Jing and Chu see warfare; to the west, armies rise in Qin and Zheng; to the north, armies rise in Yan and Zhao—or, by another reading, many of the nobility perish and the northern marches know no peace; if it enters the lodge, rejoicing follows, an amnesty is proclaimed, and the realm knows no war; if it holds position and loops the Gou-si hook, an amnesty is proclaimed; if it holds position for long, grain prices soar. When Saturn encroaches, or enters, exits, or holds position there, the northern marches fall into turmoil, great earthworks are launched, the five grains fail, flood and fire afflict the land, and pestilence spreads among the people—or, by another reading, the empress loses her hold on power; if it enters the lodge, the earth trembles, waters breach their banks, and the ancestral temples are wrecked; if it lingers there, the commander-in-chief takes the field. When Venus enters and encroaches upon it, a great amnesty is proclaimed; if it stands to the east, livestock suffer harm; if it stands to the west, armies mobilize in the sixth month; by another reading, if it holds position there, northern forces stir and generals are thrown into prison; if it appears by day, frontier armies mobilize; whether it exits, enters, lingers, or comes to rest, its presence to the south portends men's mourning and to the north women's mourning. When Mercury encroaches upon it, the ruler of the north is troubled; if it holds position there, the crops fail and the people go hungry; if it holds position for long, floods and warfare follow. When a guest star encroaches upon it, the nobility face crisis, northern armies are routed, and slanderers work within the court; if it holds position there, ministers turn against their lord and war breaks out; if it enters the lodge, the territory under its jurisdiction meets with mourning. When a comet encroaches upon it, high ministers rise in rebellion; if it departs, frontier armies mobilize and an amnesty is proclaimed. When a broom star appears, the territory under its jurisdiction falls into turmoil among the ministers, frontier armies stir, and high ministers are put to death. When a meteor enters, exits, and encroaches upon it, barbarian armies mobilize. According to the 《Yisi Occupations》: "When a meteor enters, the northern peoples come to pay court; when it exits, the Son of Heaven issues an amnesty edict to relieve the people." When azure and crimson cloud vapor encroaches upon it, pestilence spreads among the people; if the vapor is black, the ruler of the north is troubled; if azure, floods and warfare follow; if azure-white, mourning multiplies among the people; if yellow, rejoicing follows.

The Forage Stars comprise six stars west of the Celestial Park—or, by another reading, south of the Celestial Round Granary. They preside over stored hay and fodder. Also called the Celestial Accumulation, they represent the Son of Heaven's treasury storehouses. when the stars shine bright, fodder grows costly; when the stars blaze forth, the reserves of the hundred storehouses endure; when the stars vanish, the reserves of the hundred storehouses are scattered. When the moon encroaches upon them, wealth and treasure are drawn forth. When Mercury and Mars encroach upon them, fodder faces the calamity of fire and flood. The Curled Tongue comprises six stars north of the Hairy Head Lodge. It presides over the pivots of counsel and stratagem—or, by another reading, over speech itself, revealing flattery and slander. when the stars curl and lie still, worthy men rise to office; when they stand straight and stir, slanderers multiply, armies mobilize, and the land is poisoned by calumny. if they shift beyond the Milky Way, falsehoods spread across the realm. when the stars multiply in number, death claims many. When the moon encroaches upon them, mourning spreads across the land. When the five planets encroach upon them, sycophants crowd the ruler's side. When a comet or guest star encroaches upon them, the sovereign's attendants are beset with anxiety.

Wumu likewise placed the Forage Stars within the Stomach Lodge, and assigned the Curled Tongue to Stomach and again to the Hairy Head Lodge. The 《New Writings on the Celestial Appearances》 places the Forage Stars in the Lou Lodge, assigns the three western stars of the Curled Tongue to Stomach and the three eastern stars to the Hairy Head Lodge, and places the eight western stars of the Celestial Park in Stomach and the eight southern stars in the Hairy Head Lodge. A solar eclipse portends the death of frontier kings, armies turning on their own commanders, and plots of rebellion in distant realms. a halo around the sun means frontier armies will mobilize; otherwise the ruler of the north is troubled—and the omen also foretells wind and rain. A lunar eclipse brings an amnesty, warfare in the Zhao astrological division, or anxiety for the lord of Zhao. a halo around the moon portends military turmoil, famine, and mourning; a triple halo means rebels on the frontier; within seven days wind and rain will clear it—or, by another reading, a rival power is troubled and an amnesty is proclaimed throughout the realm. when it encroaches upon the chief star of the Net Lodge, inferiors strike at superiors, the commander-in-chief dies, and a rival power is beset with anxiety; when it enters the mouth of the Net Lodge, heavy rains follow; when it pierces the Net Lodge, famine afflicts the year and brigands take the field; if it strays from its course and leaves the Net Lodge, rain follows; when it stands at the center, the empress is troubled; by another reading, encroachment to the north troubles a rival power; to the south, the ruling power is troubled. When Mars encroaches upon the right horn, a great battle follows; the left horn brings a lesser engagement; if it enters the lodge, frontier armies are imperiled; if it holds position there, famine strikes and an amnesty is granted; if it traces the Gou-si hook in a loop, a great amnesty is proclaimed; by one reading, when it enters the Net Lodge, war breaks out and then war ends; by another reading, if it holds position there, the court goes hunting, the ruler of the north is troubled, and highways across the land are cut; when it enters the mouth of the Net Lodge, an amnesty is proclaimed; if it retreats to the Hairy Head Lodge, death and mourning follow; if having left it turns back to hold position, high ministers are troubled; if it lodges at the mouth of the Net Lodge, Zhao is beset with anxiety. When Saturn encroaches upon it, armies mobilize in the northwest yet do not give battle; if it holds position there, enemy troops surrender and an amnesty is granted—or, by another reading, earthworks and forced labor multiply and war breaks out; if it enters the lodge, the earth trembles and waters breach their banks; if it holds the mouth of the Net Lodge, a great person bears the calamity; Whether it emerges, enters, lingers, or lodges, armies rise in that quarter and invading forces are destroyed. When Venus encroaches upon the right horn, defeat follows and the general perishes; when it enters the mouth of the Net Lodge, generals and ministers rebel, a great amnesty is proclaimed, the realm changes its laws, feudal lords take the field, floods strike, and the five grains fail; When it transits the Net Lodge, storehouses stand empty and armies rise in the four quarters. The Celestial Street comprises two stars between the Hairy Head and Net Lodges—or, by one reading, north of the Net Lodge—marking the boundary where yin and yang divide. The 《Great Appearances Occupations》 says: near the moon-star to the west, south of the Street is the Central Realm and north of the Street is the outer domains. It also holds that the path of the sun, moon, and stars presides over watching the passes and bridges that mark the border between the inner and outer realms. when bright, the royal Way stands upright. when the moon encroaches upon the center of the Celestial Street, the realm is in balance and all under Heaven is at peace; outside the Street, secrets leak out, slanderers seize power, and the people cannot fulfill their aims; if it does not transit the Celestial Street, edicts and commands go unenforced. when the moon halos the lodge, frontier passes and bridges are blocked. when Mars holds position there, highways are severed; if it holds position for long, the state abandons ritual propriety. when Jupiter dwells there glowing crimson, calamity follows—or great drought. when Venus holds position there, armies choke the highways, the Six Yi and Mao-tou peoples are destroyed—or, by another reading, the people go hungry.
49
Celestial Height comprises four stars west of the Seated Banner—the 《New Writings on the Celestial Appearances》 places them northeast of the mouth of the Net Lodge. Raised like a terrace and pavilion, it presides over surveying cloud, mist, and vapor from the eight directions—the celestial counterpart of the Observing-the-Heavens Terrace. when invisible, the sovereign forfeits ritual propriety; if it holds steady, fortune follows; when faintly dim, yin and yang fall out of harmony. when the moon or five planets encroach upon it, floods and droughts arrive at the wrong seasons; if it is crossed, outer ministers are put to death. when the moon halos it, mourning comes within six months. when Mars enters and stays ten days, a minor amnesty is proclaimed; if it holds position thirty days, a great amnesty follows. when a guest star and comet hold position there, great drought ensues. when pale cloud vapor encroaches upon it, the same portent applies.

The Princes of the States comprise six stars south of the Five Chariots, charged with observing whether the feudal lords endure or perish. when bright, subordinates attach themselves to their superiors; when dim, subordinates rebel; when invisible, the ancestral temples are endangered and armies rise on all four sides. when Mars enters, consorts of the feudal princes grow dissolute and are schemed against by their subordinates; if it holds position there, subordinates cease to trust their superiors. when Venus and Mars encroach upon it, the feudal princes bear the omen—or, by one reading, the clan ministers are anxious. when a guest star and comet hold position there, feudal lords are removed from office.

The Five Chariots comprise five stars and the Three Pillars nine stars north of the Net Lodge—the seats of the Five Emperors and the lodges where their chariots rest. They preside over the Son of Heaven's five armaments and over whether the five grains flourish or fail. One chariot presides over hemp, another over wheat, another over beans, another over millet, and another over rice. The great star in the northwest is the Celestial Storehouse; it governs Venus, the Qin astrological region and Yong Province, and presides over beans. The northeastern star is the Celestial Prison; it governs Mercury, the Yan and Zhao regions together with You and Ji, and presides over rice. The southeastern star is the Celestial Granary; it governs Jupiter, the Lu region (Xuzhou) and the Wei region (Bingzhou), and presides over hemp. The next star to the southeast is the Minister of Works; it governs Saturn, the Chu region (Jingzhou), and presides over millet and panicled millet. The next star to the southwest is the Minister Star; it governs Mars, the Wei region (Yizhou), and presides over wheat. The 《Records of Astronomy》 says, "Venus—its deity is Lingwei; Mercury—its deity is the Wind Lord; Jupiter—its deity is the Rain Master; Mars—its deity is Fenglong; Saturn—its deity is the Thunder Lord. When any of the Five Chariots changes, read the omen by what that chariot governs. The Three Pillars—one called the Celestial Abyss, one the Celestial Rest, one the Celestial Banner—should shine evenly with spacing held constant; when the stars grow numerous, war erupts on a grand scale. Shi Shen says, "When the Celestial Storehouse star appears amid the river, the dead multiply throughout the realm and river crossings are cut off." He also says, "When the Son of Heaven receives the Spirit Terrace rites, the Five Chariots and Three Pillars shine evenly and remain constant." When the Celestial Banner star is not visible, great winds break trees; when the Celestial Rest stirs, the four quarters rebel. when one pillar protrudes, or when one vanishes, half the realm's armies take the field; when all three pillars have fully emerged, or when none are visible, the armies mobilize in full. when a pillar extends outward for one month, grain becomes three times as costly; after two or three months, the price doubles again in turn; if they extend outward without fully spanning two gaps, great floods are foretold. when the moon encroaches upon the Celestial Storehouse, war breaks out and the roads are impassable; when it encroaches upon the Celestial Abyss, nobles die and ministers overstep their sovereign. when the moon halos the asterism, the empress dreads the omen; if in the first month, an amnesty is proclaimed; if the halo encloses one chariot, minor offenses are pardoned; if all five chariots are haloed, capital and exceptional crimes are pardoned; halos in the fourth, seventh, or tenth months portend flood; halos in the eleventh or twelfth months mean costly grain. when the five planets encroach upon it, drought and mourning follow; encroachment upon the Storehouse star means war. when Jupiter enters, grain prices at market soar. when Mars enters, fire breaks out—or the omen may be read the same as for Jupiter. when Saturn enters the Celestial Storehouse, war and mourning follow; if it lodges in the center, great drought strikes, borne by the Yan and Dai regions; if it lodges in the northeast, livestock multiply and silk grows cheap; if it lodges in the northwest, all under Heaven is at peace. when Venus enters, war erupts on a grand scale; if it holds the Five Chariots, the armies of the central domains wherever they march make enemies cower and submit; if it lodges in the northwest, pestilence arises, cattle and horses die, and the Jiuquan region bears the omen. when Mercury enters and lodges there, floods follow; if it encroaches upon the asterism, armies mobilize amid flood and inundation. when a guest star encroaches upon it, the people are worn down with toil; if on a gengyin day it is observed drawing near, it is a Metal Chariot and presages war; on a jiayin day if observed drawing near, it is a Wood Chariot and coffin planks rise in price; on a wuyin day if observed drawing near, it is an Earth Chariot and presages earthworks; on a bingyin day if observed drawing near, it is a Fire Chariot and presages drought; on a renyin day if observed drawing near, it is a Water Chariot and presages inundation; when it enters, green portends anxiety and crimson portends war; if it holds the Celestial Abyss, great floods follow; if it holds the Celestial Rest, to the left means war and to the right mourning; yellow is auspicious. when a comet or broom star encroaches upon it, war breaks out and the people flee. when a meteor enters, on a jiazi day it governs grain; on a bingwu day it governs wheat; on a wuyin day it governs beans; on a gengshen day it governs panicled millet and on a renxu day millet—read each by its day, and the prices of grain, wheat, and the rest rise. when white cloud vapor enters, the people are unsettled; if crimson, war breaks out.

It presides over river bridges and ferry crossings. when the stars are not visible, ferries and crossings cease to function. when the moon enters the Celestial Ford, war breaks out. when the five planets stray from their courses and enter to hold position there, all portend war. when Mars and Saturn enter, great drought and fire follow. when Mars lodges there, cattle and horses suffer pestilence and war follows. when Mercury emerges from the Celestial Ford, an amnesty is proclaimed. when a guest star enters, war follows; if it enters and holds position, flood damage ensues. when pale or black cloud vapor enters, mourning follows; if crimson, war breaks out; if yellow-white, the Son of Heaven has cause for rejoicing.

The Banner of Three Stars comprises nine stars—also called the Celestial Banner and the Celestial Bow—and presides over bows and crossbows, watching for change to ward off calamity. when the stars resemble a strung bow, war breaks out; when bright, frontier raiders stir; when dim, the omen is auspicious. It is also said that when the Celestial Bow is incomplete, war engulfs all under Heaven. When the five planets encroach upon it, war breaks out. When Mars holds position there, subordinates plot against the ruler and the feudal lords raise armies; by one reading, frontier armies mobilize. When Venus holds position there, the armies fall into disorder. When a guest star holds position there, anxiety spreads across the realm. The 《Song of Pacing the Heavens》 assigns all the stars described above to the Net Lodge. The Wumu treatise places the Celestial Knob in the Hairy Head Lodge and the Banner of Three Stars, Celestial Gate, Five Chariots, and Three Pillars all in Turtle Beak—at odds with the 《Song of Pacing the Heavens》. The 《New Writings on the Celestial Appearances》 places both the Celestial Knob and the Banner of Three Stars in the Net Lodge; the eight western stars of the Celestial Garden belong to the Hairy Head Lodge, and the five eastern stars to the Net Lodge; the three great stars southwest of the Five Chariots belong to the Net Lodge, while the two eastern stars and the Three Pillars belong to Three Stars. The schemes all disagree; each is recorded here.

Turtle Beak comprises three stars—the outpost of the three armies and the marching storehouse, presiding over encampments and musters and gathering all things in. when bright, army provisions are ample and generals gain power; when they shift, bandits roam and encampments spring up; when dim, armies must not be deployed. A solar eclipse means ministers encroach upon the ruler—the warning falls upon commanders and ministers. a halo and triple rings presage failed harvests below and pestilence among the people; five rings presage a great amnesty within sixty days. A lunar eclipse portends drought, anxiety for the commander-in-chief, and rebellion against the ruler. A halo around the moon in the first month presages an amnesty, defeat for armies in the field, anxiety for the commander-in-chief, and death among the subordinate officers. when Jupiter encroaches upon it, war breaks out in its astrological territory; if it holds position there, farmers lose their livelihood, trouble follows, many able-bodied men die suddenly, rebels arise below, and pestilence spreads among the people; if it enters, banditry flourishes and the seasons fall out of harmony; if the ruler's punishments are unjust, it moves retrograde. when Mars encroaches upon it, its territory sees rebellion, drought, fire, war, and soaring grain prices; when it joins Turtle Beak, the Zhao territory is mutually afflicted; when it enters, armies mobilize below. when Saturn enters and encroaches, war and earthworks follow and its territory loses ground; when the empress acts without restraint, Saturn moves retrograde and turns yellow. when Venus encroaches upon it, war breaks out; if it holds position there, its territory alters its ordinances, great ministers rebel, undertakings fail to ripen, and pestilence spreads among the people. when Mercury encroaches upon it, armies must not be mobilized; by one reading, floods afflict the Zhao territory and rebels arise; when it holds position there, famine stalks the Zhao territory. When a guest star enters or leaves this lodge, green portends anxiety, crimson war, black flood, white mourning, and yellow-white good fortune. when a comet encroaches upon it, war breaks out; entering or leaving its astrological territory means lost ground and a dispersing populace. When a broom star strikes it, armies fall into disorder and are shattered; its color is read by the same rules as for a guest star. when a meteor enters and encroaches upon it, rebels arise and an army is shattered. when cloud vapor encroaches upon it, crimson means war; pale means war and anxiety; black means great men in the Zhao territory face calamity; if yellow in color, divine treasure is brought in.

The Three Stars lodge comprises ten stars—also called Three Stars' Punishment, the Celestial Market, the Great Mark, and Axe and Halberd—and presides over cutting down and reaping all things to assist the yin force; it is also the Celestial Prison, governing execution and wielding authority to carry out punishment; it also holds the balance by which affairs are weighed and settled; it also presides over frontier cities and the nine interpreters—hence it should not shift. Three Stars forms the body of the White Tiger; the three stars arrayed crosswise within it are the three generals; the northeast is the Left Shoulder, governing the Left General; the northwest is the Right Shoulder, governing the Right General; the southeast is the Left Foot, governing the Rear General; the southwest is the Right Foot, governing the Lieutenant General. Three Stars corresponds to seven generals; the three small stars at the center are called Punishment—the celestial commandant, presiding over the Xianbei and foreign states—and should not shine bright. when all seven generals shine bright and large, armies throughout the realm are at full strength; when the royal Way is deficient, rays and horns spread; when the Punishment stars shine as bright as Three Stars, great ministers plot and war breaks out; when their color fades, armies scatter in defeat; when rays and horns stir, the frontier faces crisis, armies mobilize, and executions and punitive campaigns follow; when the stars shift, subordinates attack the ruler; when the shoulders grow fine and slight, armies throughout the realm are enfeebled; when the left foot star enters the Jade Well, war breaks out, Qin suffers great floods and mourning, and mountains and stones show uncanny omens; when the stars grow erratic and skewed, royal ministers turn disloyal; when the left thigh star disappears, armies must not be mobilized in the southeast; the right thigh star governs the northwest. another account holds that when the feet of Three Stars shift northward, it signifies advance, and the general who takes the field wins distinction; shifting southward means retreat, and the general loses influence. when the three stars grow sparse, laws and decrees grow harsh. a solar eclipse brings anxiety to great ministers, mutual slaughter among subordinates, and the rise of northern powers. a halo around the sun foretells marriage envoys—or, by another reading, severe famine. a lunar eclipse in its allotted degree brings war, intrigue among subordinates, and the execution of noble ministers; its territory suffers famine, foreign armies clash and great generals perish, and the laws of the realm are overturned. a halo around the moon presages the death of generals, popular calamity and unrest, and ill fortune in battle. when the moon encroaches upon it, noble ministers grow anxious, war erupts, and the people go hungry; encroaching upon Three Stars' Punishment brings the death of lieutenant generals. when Jupiter encroaches upon it, floods and droughts strike out of season, plague spreads, and famine follows; if it holds position there, war breaks out and pestilence afflicts the people; if it enters the lodge, government throughout the realm is overturned. when Mars encroaches upon it, war and civil strife follow, and Qin and Yan are stricken with ill omens; stationing there brings drought and war, and unrest in all directions; if it moves retrograde and enters the lodge, severe famine ensues. when Saturn encroaches upon it, traitorous ministers appear; holding position there means the subordinate state perishes and treacherous ministers plot rebellion—or, by one reading, mourning falls upon the empress and consorts; moving retrograde and remaining on station there presages mobilization for war. when Venus encroaches upon it, armies mobilize throughout the realm; stationing there brings turmoil among the great, a change of regime, and fierce warfare among frontier peoples. when Mercury encroaches upon it, floods and war follow and noble ministers are removed from office. when Mercury and Three Stars appear together in the west, drought strikes and great ministers are put to death. moving retrograde and holding station there presages war. when a guest star enters and encroaches upon it, executions and punitive campaigns occur within the realm; holding position there means border prefectures lose ground; when it circles the lodge, frontier generals face executions and punitive campaigns. when a comet encroaches upon it, frontier armies are routed, the ruler dies, and the omen lingers for three years; piercing through the lodge in white portends war and mourning. when a broom star manifests at Three Stars, ruler and ministers alike are troubled and the state's armies suffer defeat. when a shooting star enters and encroaches upon it, whoever strikes first is destroyed. The 《Yisi Treatise on Astrology》 says, "When a shooting star appears with moist, lustrous light, the frontier is secure, an amnesty is proclaimed, and the prisons stand empty." when blue-green cloud vapor enters and encroaches upon it, the Son of Heaven raises fortifications along the frontiers; a pale blue-white hue portends ministerial rebellion; red foretells civil war; a moist, lustrous yellow means great generals receive imperial favors; black presages flood disaster and anxiety among great ministers. when white cloud vapor rises and pierces through the lodge, generals perish and the Son of Heaven falls sick.

Chariot Ghost comprises five stars that watch for treacherous designs—it is the celestial eye. the northeast star presides over stockpiled horses, the southeast over stockpiled troops, the southwest over stockpiled silks, the northwest over stockpiled gold and jade—omens are read according to their changes. the central star is Accumulated Corpses, presiding over death, mourning, and rites of sacrifice; or, by one reading, it is the axe-halberd, governing execution and decapitation. when the stars shine bright and large, the grain fails; when they are dim, the people disperse. the halberd ought to remain faint and obscure; brightness raises armies and brings the execution of great ministers; stirring and shining means heavy levies and onerous labor service, and the people nurse bitter complaint. a solar eclipse unsettles the state, brings great mourning, and troubles the nobility. a halo means war in its jurisdiction and the execution or deposition of great ministers. a lunar eclipse brings anxiety to noble ministers and the empress within the year. a halo portends drought and an amnesty. the moon encroaching upon it troubles the lord of the Qin region—or, by one reading, kills army generals, alarms noble ministers and the empress dowager, and brings pestilence among the people. Saturn encroaching upon it troubles great ministers and the empress dowager; holding there brings anxiety to the inner palace, drought, and great earthen works; entering the halberd bodes ill for the king; encroaching upon Accumulated Corpses: the yang sector signifies the ruler, the yin the empress, the center the heir apparent, the right noble ministers—whichever part it holds, that party suffers the omen. Chen Zhuo said: "The five grains, fish, and salt grow costly." Wu Xian said: "Empresses and consorts are ill-omened; pestilence in the palace." When the moon encroaches upon it, generals and chancellors die and its realm is troubled. When Jupiter enters and encroaches upon it, the Son of Heaven has matters of celebration; if it stations there, the state is greatly abundant and sovereign and ministers are of one mind; if thirty days pass without it departing, the realm is tranquil and that state rises to peace. When Mars encroaches upon it, meritorious ministers are due for enfeoffment; if it enters, armies rise; another reading holds that if its color matches the prospering and declining of the four seasons, nobles in its jurisdiction are secure and the altars of soil and grain face no peril; another reading holds that if Mars stations there in spring, the feudal lords rebel; if it moves retrograde and stations there, the earth quakes and fire disasters follow; another reading holds the generals are alarmed and earthworks begin; yet another holds that in conjunction one must not deploy armies. When Saturn encroaches upon it, the chief consort indulges overmuch in feasting—or palace women lapse in propriety; if it enters, armies rise; if it exits, its jurisdiction loses territory; if it stations there, earthworks are undertaken. When Venus encroaches upon it, the state is troubled; if it stations there, that state's military plots come to nothing. Shi Shen said: "The state changes its government." If it lodges and remains, that state raises armies. When Mercury encroaches and stations, the five grains fail, armies rise, great floods come, eminent ministers betray the state, the people suffer pestilence and lawsuits multiply; if it shows rays, ministers wound their lord; if it enters, fire disaster follows; if it exits; there are rebellious ministers. When a guest star encroaches upon it, the Son of Heaven is troubled over wine; if it stations there, recluses emerge from the states of Zhou and Chu; if it enters the Spread, armies rise and the state suffers famine; if it lodges and does not depart, the Forward General harbors a plot. Another reading holds it favors whoever raises armies first. When a comet encroaches upon it, the state deploys armies and the people scatter; if it stations there, armies rise; if it exits, drought follows; Another reading holds that encroachment and stationing mean the ruler wishes to relocate the palace. A broom star at the Spread means the people disperse and armies rise on a grand scale. The Yisi Occupations: "When a meteor enters and exits, the altars of ancestor and soil flourish, amnesty is proclaimed, and subordinate ministers come to offer congratulations." When pale cloud vapor enters it, those who toast guests in the court have cause for anxiety; if yellow-white, the Son of Heaven grants gifts to guests in his joy; if black, flood disaster strikes its jurisdiction; if crimson, the Son of Heaven is about to deploy armies.

According to the Han dynasty's Yongyuan bronze armillary sphere, the Spread Lodge was measured at seventeen degrees; the Tang Kaiyuan itinerant armillary gave it as eighteen degrees. The earlier measurement placed it ninety-seven degrees from the celestial pole. The Jingyou-era survey found the Spread at eighteen degrees; from the second star westward, the distance from the pole was one hundred three degrees.

Heavenly Temple comprises fourteen stars south of the Spread Lodge—the Son of Heaven's ancestral temple. When bright, it is auspicious; when faint and fine, that region has armies and military provisions fail to reach the troops. If a guest star encroaches upon it from within, there is a gathering of white-robed mourners and armies rise. Another reading holds that sacrificial officers are troubled. Wu Mi said: "Its prognostications are the same as Void Beam's."

Regarding Heavenly Temple's fourteen stars, though the Jin Treatise lists them outside the Twenty-eight Lodges, it also places them south of the Spread Lodge—the same as the Sui Treatise records and consistent with the Song of Pacing the Heavens.

The Wings Lodge comprises twenty-two stars—the Celestial Music Office. It presides over players, singers, and theatrical amusement, and also over distant guests from foreign tribes and visitors from lands beyond the sea. When the stars are bright and large, rites and music flourish and the four quarters send envoys; when they stir and tremble, envoys come from the southern and northern barbarians; when they scatter and shift, the Son of Heaven is about to raise armies. A solar eclipse means the king lapses in ritual, loyal ministers face slander, and drought disaster follows. A halo means music officers are dismissed; if three embracing vapors appear above it, enemy hearts desire peace. A lunar eclipse likewise means loyal ministers face slander, flying insects die in great numbers, armies rise in the north, and the chief consort is ill-omened. Shi Shen said: "Great ministers harbor a plot." When the moon encroaches upon it, the state is troubled, its jurisdiction sees armies, great generals perish, and the chief consort is ill-omened. When Jupiter encroaches, the five grains are harmed by wind; if it stations there, the king's way is established, generals and chancellors are loyal, and literary arts are employed; if it moves retrograde and enters, the ruler favors hunting. When Mars encroaches upon it, the people in its jurisdiction suffer famine, subordinates disobey orders, and frontier armies rise; whether it exits, enters, lingers, or lodges, armies rise; if it stations there, fawning ministers stir rebellion. When Saturn encroaches upon it, great ministers are troubled; if it stations there, the sovereign is sagely and ministers worthy, the harvest is abundant, and the chief consort has cause for joy; whether it exits, enters, lingers, or lodges, armies rise; if it moves retrograde, the chief consort loses her hold on governance. Whether Venus enters or encroaches upon it, armies invariably rise; whether it exits, enters, lingers, or lodges, great wind and flood disaster follow and rulers in its jurisdiction are unsettled; if it lodges to the left, drought follows; if it stations, encroaches, forms the gou-si hook, or dashes against it, great ministers monopolize the ruler's commands. When Mercury brushes against it, subordinate ministers stir rebellion and are executed in secret; if it stations there, drought, famine, and a scattering of the people follow, and dragons and serpents appear; if it stations at the center, armies rise on a grand scale; If they appear together in the west, great ministers are troubled. When a guest star enters and encroaches upon it, the state has armies and great ministers are troubled—or, by one reading, a mission comes from a land beyond the sea; if it stations there, armies rise. When a comet encroaches upon it, great ministers are troubled and the state suffers armies and mourning. A broom star at the Wings likewise troubles great ministers, and its jurisdiction loses rites and music; if it exits, that region harbors plots and below come armies and mourning; whichever direction its tail points, people surrender. When a meteor encroaches upon it, the trouble likewise falls upon great ministers; if it exits, armies rise below; if it enters, eminent ministers are imprisoned. The Yisi Occupations said: "When a meteor enters, worthy men throughout the realm come to audience, southern barbarians bring tribute, and the state has worthy ministers." When crimson cloud vapor enters and exits, sudden armies appear; If it is yellow and lustrous, feudal lords come bearing tribute; If black, the state faces calamity.

Eastern Ou comprises five stars south of the Wings—it is a star of the southern and northern barbarians. The 《Records of Astronomy》 says, "Eastern Ou is Eastern Yue; today that is Yongning county in Yongjia commandery." When its rays sharpen and it trembles, the barbarians rebel. If Venus or Mars stations there, that region sees armies.

The Crossbar Lodge comprises four stars. It presides over the Director of Victuals and assisting ministers, chariots and cavalry, and the bearing of heavy loads. When armies go out or come in, all prognostications are read from the Crossbar. It also presides over wind and prognosticates death and mourning. When bright and large, the imperial equipage stands fully ready; when it shifts position, the Son of Heaven faces trouble; when they cluster close together, armies rise. The Brackets are two stars flanking the Crossbar on either side. They govern kings and marquises: the left Bracket for the king's agnates, the right Bracket for those of other surnames. When the stars blaze bright, armies rise on a grand scale; when far from the Crossbar, misfortune follows; when the Brackets lift, southern barbarians invade; when a chariot lacks its brackets, the state faces calamity. A solar eclipse means worry for generals and ministers and a warning to officials of the imperial equipage—or, by one reading, the empress is unsettled. When a halo forms and opposing vapor appears, armies rise below and cities are stormed; strike toward where the opposing vapor points and victory follows—or, by another reading, the king is ill-omened. A lunar eclipse brings worry upon the empress and great ministers. A lunar halo presages armies, drought in the year, and many great winds. When Jupiter encroaches upon it, there is fire disaster and epidemic among the people; great ministers are troubled and the director of the treasuries is held guilty; if it enters, that state's general perishes; if it stations there, the state has mourning; if it lingers seven days without shifting, an amnesty is proclaimed—or, by another reading, the ruler faces trouble. When Mars encroaches upon it, rebellious armies rise; if it enters the Crossbar, generals rebel, water harms the crops, and ominous talk spreads among the people; if it moves retrograde, there is fire and warfare. When Saturn encroaches upon it, armies rise and earthworks are undertaken; if it enters, armies are defeated; if it moves retrograde, the chief consort is troubled; whether it exits, enters, lodges, or lingers, within sixty days armies rise and a great drought follows. When Venus encroaches upon it, armies rise and territory is gained; if it enters, armies rise; if it stations there, territory is lost and generals face worry; if it rises at the left horn and moves retrograde to the Crossbar, territory is lost; if it crosses heaven, armies fill the countryside. When Mercury encroaches upon it, epidemic afflicts the people, great ministers are troubled, and eminent persons mourn within the central states; if it stations there, great flood follows; if it enters, the realm is troubled by fire—or, by one reading, the state falls into mourning. When a guest star encroaches upon it, armies rise and mourning follows; if it enters, earthworks are undertaken, grain grows dear, and envoys from the feudal lords arrive; if it exits, the ruler dispatches envoys to the feudal lords; if it stations there, frontier armies rise and the people suffer famine; if it stations at the Brackets, military officers face worry. When a comet encroaches upon it, armies rise and mourning follows; if its color is red, the ruler has lost the Way—or, by another reading, the Son of Heaven raises armies and kings and dukes are deposed. A broom star at the Crossbar likewise presages armies and mourning—or, by another reading, subordinates plot against their superiors and the ruler faces trouble. When a meteor encroaches upon it, armies rise and mourning follows as well; within one year the treasuries stand empty; if it encroaches in spring or summer, leather goods are consumed; if in autumn or winter, flood and drought fall out of balance.
123
According to the Han dynasty's Yongyuan bronze armillary sphere, the Crossbar Lodge was reckoned at eighteen degrees. The earlier measurement placed it ninety-eight degrees from the celestial pole. The Jingyou-era survey likewise found eighteen degrees and one hundred degrees from the pole.
124
Changsha is a single star within the Crossbar Lodge, two degrees within the Crossbar and one hundred five degrees from the pole; it presides over lifespan. When bright, the ruler enjoys long life and his descendants flourish.
125
Green Mound comprises seven stars southeast of the Crossbar—they mark the names of barbarian states. When the stars blaze bright, barbarian armies grow strong; when they tremble, barbarian armies rebel; when they hold steady in their places, the omen is auspicious.
126
Army Gate comprises two stars west of Green Mound—or, by one reading, north of the Earth Director—the gate of the Son of Heaven's six palaces. It presides over encampment watches and the raising of the leopard-tail banner, sharing the same prognostications as the South Gate. If the stars depart from their proper state, or a guest star encroaches upon them, roads everywhere become impassable.
127
Instrument Repository comprises thirty-two stars south of the Crossbar Lodge—the treasury of musical instruments. When bright, the eight tones harmonize and ruler and ministers live at peace; when not bright, the opposite holds. When guest stars or comets encroach upon it, music officers are executed. When crimson cloud vapor veils it, music throughout the realm is abolished.
128
The Earth Director comprises four stars west of Green Mound. It presides over territorial boundaries and is also known as the Minister of Education. When evenly bright, the realm is abundant; when faint and dim, the crops fail to ripen. When Venus or Mars encroach upon it, men and women abandon plowing and sericulture. When guest stars or comets encroach upon it, armies rise and the people scatter.

According to the 《Song of Pacing the Heavens》, the left and right Brackets (two stars), Changsha (one star), Army Gate (two stars), Earth Director (four stars), Green Mound (seven stars), and Instrument Repository (thirty-two stars) are all assigned to the Crossbar Lodge; the Jin Treatise assigns only the Bracket stars and Changsha to the Crossbar, placing the rest outside the Twenty-eight Lodges; the 《New Book of Heavenly Images》 assigns Army Gate, Instrument Repository, and Earth Director to the Wings, and Green Mound to the Crossbar; Wu Mi's book assigns Army Gate to the Wings and all the rest to the Crossbar. The present text follows the 《Song of Pacing the Heavens》, while appending the traditions of the various schools.
