Offerings in vessels great and small, and music of metal, stone, silk, and pipe. As ritual unfolds and music sounds, may the imperial fortune know no end.

Receiving the blessing, to the tune the cited text: Purify the five grades of ale; pour from the six great urns. When sincerity is brought to its height, observance of the rites grows ever more devout. May great blessing be granted, and posterity flourish forever. Radiance upon radiance, harmony heaped upon harmony—the Way of the Emperor stands supreme.

Descent of the Spirit, to the tune the cited text: Where lies the Round Mound? In the southern quarter of the realm. The spirits are honored in one great rite; destiny opens without limit. Forebears draw near; trays and vessels stand in ordered rows. The rite is grave and still; blessings pour down in plenty.

Descent of the Spirit, to the tune the cited text (The lyrics for the six changes are the same) Non-action reaches to every distance; deep and vast is the realm. The spirits are worshipped with reverence; cap and coronet, embroidered robes are worn. Grain offerings are rich and fine; bright virtue shines with fragrance. With blessing and with protection—not a narrow prayer for oneself alone.

Removal of the offerings, to the tune the cited text: Ascending that suburban mound, the great sacrifice is fulfilled. The offerings are plentiful; their fragrance now first rises. The Supreme Lord accepts the offering in due season, for our pure devotion. The rite is completed and the offerings withdrawn; blessing and fortune are fulfilled. The Emperor's ascent and descent, to the tune the cited text: The mountain is made his height, and he climbs to its summit. His jade-like steps are light and swift, at the Lord's left and right. The Lord says to our king: I hold your benevolence and depth in my heart. Looking back upon him with favor, may he forever bring peace to the realm.

配位酌獻,《大寧》於穆文祖,妙道九德。 默契靈心,肇基王跡。 啟佑後人,垂裕罔極。 合食昭薦,孝思維則。
Libation and offering at the associated seat, to the tune the cited text: Solemn is the civil Ancestor, of wondrous Way and ninefold virtue. In silent accord with the numinous heart, he laid the foundations of the royal house. He opens the way and protects posterity; his bounty flows without end. Joint offerings are clearly presented; filial devotion is the standard.

Glorious is the Compliant Ancestor, whose virtue and blessing have piled up through the ages. His source runs deep and strong; he does not flaunt his glory. He laid the foundation of Heaven's bright mandate; his depth brought lasting prosperity. Filial in worship, rich in offering—blessings are granted without end.

高宗建炎初,國步尚艱,乃詔有司,天帝地祗及他大祀,先以時舉。 太常尋奏,近已增募樂工,幹、羽、簨、虡亦備,始循舊禮,用登歌樂舞。 其祀昊天上帝。
Early in the Jianyan era, when Gaozong's fortunes were still precarious, he ordered the responsible offices to hold sacrifices to the Heavenly Emperor, the Earthly Spirits, and other major rites at the proper seasons without delay. The Court of Imperial Sacrifices soon reported that they had recently recruited additional musicians, and that shields, feathers, banners, and stands were all in readiness; they had begun to follow the old rites, employing the ascending hymns with music and dance. The sacrifice was offered to the August Heaven, the Supreme Lord.

With the Round Bell as keynote, three movements unfold: the supreme ritual is reviewed, and the pure sacrifice is duly performed. The day is auspicious and the hour propitious; ritual is fulfilled and the music stands ready. Wind-chariots and cloud-banners draw near; the spirits come in joy and take their place. Bless our fragrant virtue, and grant these abundant blessings.

黃鍾為角,一奏我將我享,涓選休成。 執事有恪,惟寅惟清。 樂既六變,肅雍和鳴。 高高在上,庶幾是聽。
With Yellow Bell as the horn tone, the first movement rises: 'I shall present, I shall receive'—careful selection brings all to perfection. The officiants serve with utmost reverence—in diligence alone and purity alone. When the music has passed through its six changes, solemn harmony fills the air. High above, high above—may You incline to hear.

太簇為徵,一奏禮崇禋祀,備物薦誠。 昭格穹昊,明德惟馨。 風馬雲車,蚃居歆。 申錫無疆,齎我思成。
With Great Cluster as the melody tone, the first movement rises: the rites exalt the suburban sacrifice, and every offering is set forth in sincerity. Clearly reaching the vast vault of Heaven—bright virtue alone is fragrant. Wind-horses and cloud-chariots come to approach and delight in the offering. Blessings are extended without end, and our prayers are brought to fulfillment.

姑洗為羽,一奏惟天為大,物始攸資。 恭承禋祀,以報以祈。 神不可度,日監在茲。 有馨明德,庶其格思。
With Gu Xian as the feather tone, the first movement rises: 'Heaven alone is great'—all things depend on it from the very start. We reverently undertake the suburban sacrifice, both to give thanks and to pray. The spirit cannot be fathomed—day by day It watches from here. Fragrant bright virtue is here; may it reach the divine mind.

皇帝盥洗,《正安》靈承上帝,厲意專精。 設洗於阼,罍水以清。 盥以致潔,感通神明。 無遠弗屆,其饗茲誠。
The Emperor's hand-washing, to the tune the cited text: The spirit receives the Supreme Lord; his mind is keen and wholly refined. The washing stand is set at the eastern steps, and water in the urn is made pure. By washing he achieves purity, and feeling reaches the spirits. Nothing distant lies beyond reach; may the spirits accept this sincerity.

Ascending the altar, to the tune the cited text: Grand is the Supreme Lord; the spirit arrives from every quarter! As the first yang stirs again, the canonical sacrifices keep their fixed season. Refined intent reaches through in secret; though far away, it draws near. Silks measured out present sincerity; where there is substance, the basket is filled. The Emperor returns to his place, to the tune the cited text: The canonical sacrifice keeps its fixed order; the Supreme Lord is clearly served. Offerings are raised to declare reverence, down to the laying out of silks. Bells and drums are in place; every ceremony of the rite is ready. As the spirit draws near, gifts are reverently received.

Civil dance withdraws and martial dance advances, to the tune the cited text: Great virtue is called life-giving-yin and yang, cold and heat. Music and dance give form to the rite—shields, axes, pipes, and plumes. Now easing, now tightening—ranks withdraw, then ranks advance. The spirit rests in joy; blessings are granted across the broad realm.

亞、終獻,《文安》惟聖普臨,順皇之德。 典禮有彝,享祀不忒。 籩豆靜嘉,降登肹飭。 神具醉止,景貺咸集。
Second and final offerings, to the tune the cited text: Only the Sage presides everywhere, in accord with the Emperor's virtue. Canonical ceremonies have their fixed rule; the sacrifice is performed without lapse. Bamboo trays and beans stand in quiet perfection; offerings descend and ascend in harmonious order. The spirit is fully sated and at rest; bright blessings gather all around.

徹豆,《肅安》內心齊誠,外物蠲潔。 神來迪嘗,俎豆既徹。 燕及群生,靡或夭閼。 降福穰穰,時萬時億。
Removing the beans, to the tune the cited text: Within, the heart is united in sincerity; without, every offering is purified. The spirit comes to guide the tasting; the stands and beans have been cleared away. Blessing reaches all living things; none is cut off before its time. Blessings descend in abundance—by tens of thousands and by hundreds of millions.

Gazing at the burning, to the tune the cited text: The spirit receives the Supreme Lord; refined intent reaches through. Fragrant aroma spreads on every side; grain offerings stand rich and full. 紹興十三年,初舉郊祀,命學士院製宮廟朝獻及圜壇行禮、登門肆赦樂章,凡五十有八。 至二十八年,以臣僚有請改定,於是御製樂章十有三及徽宗元御製仁宗廟樂章一,共十有四篇。 餘則分命大臣與兩製儒館之士,一新撰述,並懿節別廟樂曲凡七十有四,俱彙見焉。 其祀圜丘。
In Shaoxing 13, when the suburban sacrifice was first held, the Hanlin Academy was ordered to compose fifty-eight hymns for palace-temple morning offerings, Round Altar ceremonial movements, and the Gate Amnesty. By Shaoxing 28, after officials petitioned for revision, the Emperor personally composed thirteen hymns, together with one temple hymn for Emperor Renzong that Huizong had composed earlier—fourteen pieces in all. The rest were separately assigned to senior ministers and scholars of the two academies for fresh composition; together with seventy-four pieces for Empress Yijie's separate shrine, all are gathered here. This section records the sacrifice at the Round Mound.

Ultimate is the thickness of Kun—like a mound, it rests in stillness. Softly bearing all that moves and all that grows, it gives them their beginning and brings their nature to completion. Riding clouds, misty and remote; hearing music, lingering on. Only advancing, only looking back; descending blessing continuous.
