Mindful of our sage father's cultured virtue, we answer Heaven above in reverent homage. The spirit-assistant presides at the rite, offering silks with utmost sincerity. Heaven's fullness and Earth's grace sustain every creature; in the inner hall and Ming Hall we offer unstained devotion. Not jade or silk alone, but the heart's fragrance, moves Heaven; grant enduring peace through endless ages. Libation offering, 《Celebratory Repose》: grave and still is the inner hall, joined in rite with the Ming Hall. Heaven and Earth look on and assent; the Three Sage Emperors attend as secondary hosts. Ancestral achievement and imperial virtue kindle a radiant age; at the Great Chamber the stern pairing of father and Heaven is jointly perfected. With scepter and silk we offer truth, trusting it will be received; the collateral line is granted bounty, firming the realm's foundation. Libation offering, 《Filial Repose》: the Founding Ancestor forged the state; the Two Imperial Ancestors carried forward his virtue. In grave harmony we offer filial sacrifice, ascending to stand beside Heaven's round summit. Our forebears' teaching laid the way—what strength has this unworthy frame to claim? Radiant is the unified hall—nothing surpasses honoring Heaven. Rite and melody flourish to completion; spirit and substance meet as one. Only the sage may feast Heaven; only filial devotion may serve the father. O glorious ancestral feast—the supreme ceremony is here set forth. How shall we offer our reverence? Jade and silk blaze with splendor. How shall we summon blessing? High Heaven looks on and assents. Silks offered to Emperor Shenzong, 《Faithful Repose》: the unified hall's rites stand complete—in the era of the sage king. The hall's banquet opens on every side; luminous virtue rises like incense.

The sage forebear draws near; fortune rains down in overflowing measure. Generation after generation in unbroken line—may ten thousand offerings ever flourish. Offering the sacrificial tray, 《Auspicious Repose》: splendid rises the Ming Hall; the Son of Heaven takes up the ceremony. We place our sage forebear beside the Supreme Lord. Among every rank and office, who would dare withhold reverence! The offering-board is clean, the sacrifice plump; its ascent follows every rule.

Towering deeds and swift virtue—each burns with radiant splendor. Raised to the ancestral feast in paired honor—grace us without limit. The civil dancers withdraw, the martial dancers enter, 《Solemn Repose》: dance images achievement; music exalts virtue alone. Letters order the myriad states; arms still the four realms. Now drawn tight, now eased—the ceremony never strays. The gods' gaze shines clear; filial devotion is the measure of all.

莫尊乎天,莫親乎父。 既享既侑,誠申禮舉。 戛擊堂上,八音始具。 天子億齡,飲神之胙。 徹豆,《欽安》穆穆在堂,肅肅在庭。 於顯辟公,來相思成。
Nothing is higher than Heaven; nothing is closer than the father. Feast and assistance complete—devotion declared, the ceremony fulfilled. The sounding-stones ring in the hall; the eight tones stand fully arrayed. May the Son of Heaven live ten thousand ages, partaking of the gods' consecrated meat. Withdrawing the offering-trays, 《Reverent Repose》: deep stillness fills the hall; grave order fills the court. O glorious Duke of Zhou, come to aid—the rite is brought to completion.

The gods have delighted and departed—felt though unheard. Bestow on us fine blessing; let peace reach every living thing. Returning to the great rest-pavilion, 《Restful Repose》: glorious is the Ming Hall; the ten thousand regions assemble in their season. The imperial heir, our sage forebear, stands as Heaven's secondary guest. Music draws from Shun's ancient canon; ritual follows the Zhou pattern. The sacred business is accomplished—O glorious day, it has come to pass.

Five hymns for the Daguan ancestral Ming Hall sacrifice; offering jade and silks, 《Tranquil Repose》: in meeting the gods, the inner heart is supreme. Outwardly we show every ornament; inwardly we mirror pure devotion. The fine jade stands displayed, ready to be offered as measured silks. Grave in bearing, harmonious in spirit. A realm that serves the gods holds feasting Heaven as the highest honor. Virtue is perfected within; every outward ornament proclaims it. Choice jade shows its worth; measured silks are laid before the altar. What do we reverently honor? Only for the ancestral rite. Silks offered at the secondary seat, 《Faithful Repose》: the Ming Hall sacrifice begins; the great recompense is proclaimed. Grave and reverent, reverent and grave—we are led to behold our luminous forebear.

涓選休辰,齊明朝夕。 於惟皇王,孝思罔極。 酌獻,《孝安》若昔大猷,孝思維則。 永言孝思,丕承其德。 於昭明威,侑於上帝。 齎我思成,永綏福祉。
An auspicious day is chosen with care; from dawn to dusk we keep the fast in purity. O august sovereign—filial devotion knows no bound. Libation offering, 《Filial Repose》: as in the great design of antiquity—filial devotion is the rule. Forever mindful in filial devotion, we grandly carry forward his virtue. Clear and radiant is his majesty, assisting Heaven on high. May our thoughts reach fulfillment; may blessed fortune endure forever.

The Emperor enters the gate, 《Ritual Repose》: Song is ours alone—the Son of the Lord on High. Three years on, the sacrifice is divined; for a hundred generations the foundation is handed down. Blessing reaches even the young and lowly; victims are offered in worship. We dare not forget the fast and trembling awe; in every detail we perform the highest rite. Splendid rises the Ming Hall—the burnt offering is first proclaimed. The ancestors come to join the rite, assisting Heaven as well. The nine provinces rush to attend; every minister fulfills his part. Heaven's pure blessing is gathered in this season—may it be granted us for ten thousand generations. Inviting the spirits down, 《Sincere Repose》: to what do the gods draw near? Only virtue draws them near. Jade and victims stand arrayed—with sincerity, the spirits come to behold us.

We open the Ming Hall, keeping to the realm's ancient custom. May they still deign to dwell and feast here, deepening the ancestral blessing. Ablution, 《Ritual Repose》: the nine mats are first laid out—after the pattern of old. O glorious great spirits—come to behold us, come to feast. Every rite is perfected in turn; the hundred ministers stand forth to assist. Subtle sincerity rises from the heart, joining Heaven and earth in communion.

至哉坤元,持載萬物! 繼天神聖,觀世治忽。 頌祇之堂,薦以圭黻。 孰為邦休,四海無拂? 太祖位奠幣,《廣安》推尊太元,重屋為盛。 誰其配之? 我祖齊聖。
Supreme is Earth's power—sustaining and upholding the myriad things! Continuing Heaven's sacred wisdom, discerning whether the age is governed or neglected. We praise the hall of the Earth Spirit, offering jade scepter and embroidered silks. Who brings the realm its blessing? When the four seas harbor no discord. Silks offered at the Founding Ancestor's seat, 《Broad Repose》: the Supreme Origin is exalted—the layered hall is the supreme grandeur. Who is fit to stand as its counterpart? Our ancestor, equal to the sage.

He opened the foundation and seized the heavenly token; he took the throne and fixed the mandate. For ten thousand years the filial heir shall know blessing. Silks offered at Emperor Taizong's seat, 《Transformative Repose》: the imperial spirit descends—no rite goes unheeded. He sits beside Heaven to feast; the ancestors alone ascend to share the offering. 耳聽鋗玉,目瞻熉珠。 樂備周奏,儀參漢圖。 神人並況,天地同符。 亦既見帝,王心則愉。 尚書捧俎,《禧安》展牲登俎,《簫韶》在庭。 羞陳五室,意徹三靈。
The ear catches the ring of jade; the eye beholds the glow of luminous pearls. Music follows the Zhou pattern; ritual draws on Han precedent. Gods and men stand present together; Heaven and earth are in harmony. Having beheld the Lord, the sovereign's heart is filled with joy. Ministers of State bear the offering-trays, 《Auspicious Repose》: victims are laid upon the trays; 《Xiao-Shao》 sounds in the court. Offerings spread through the five chambers; devotion reaches the three numinous powers.

It is not the offerings themselves that are feasted upon—only sincerity makes the fragrance rise. Forever master of the sacrifice—may the spirits know endless peace. Libation at the Lord of Heaven's place, 《Celebratory Repose》: the sun stands in the eastern quarter—on the upper xin day. The hall of yang is first opened; with reverence we honor the exalted spirits. Azure jade shines through the night; purple incense glows at dawn. Ancestors stand paired together; Heaven and earth share one burnt offering.

一德開基,百年垂統。 中天禘郊,薄海朝貢。 寶龜相承,器鼎加重。 澤深慶綿,帝復命宋。 太宗位酌獻,《韶安》紹天承業,繼世立功。 帷幄屢勝,車書始同。
Single virtue founded the realm; a hundred years of lineage descend. Heaven's di and suburban rites are performed at the center; from the farthest seas, tribute comes to court. Sacred tortoises pass in succession; ritual vessels and cauldrons grow ever weightier. Deep is the grace, long the blessing—Heaven renews its mandate to Song. Libation at Emperor Taizong's seat, 《Harmonious Repose》: inheriting Heaven's legacy, he carried the enterprise forward—merit won for ages to come. Victory after victory was won from the command tent; at last chariots and script were one.

武掃氛霧,文垂日虹。 遺澤所及,孰知其終! 徽宗位酌獻,《成安》欽惟合宮,承神至尊。 祗戒專精,儼然若存。 奠茲嘉觴,茝蘭其芬。 發祉隤祥,以子以孫。
Arms swept away the miasma; letters hung like a rainbow across the sun. The grace he left reaches everywhere—who can know where it ends! Libation at Emperor Huizong's seat, 《Fulfilled Repose》: reverently in the unified hall, receiving the supreme spirit. Reverent and wholly intent, solemn as though he were still present. This fine cup is set forth, fragrant with orchid and angelica. Blessing is sent forth, fortune descends—to sons and grandsons.

The Emperor returns to the inner rest-pavilion, 《Ritual Repose》: the gourd wine is already raised, yet the mat seats have not yet shifted. Virtue draws every gaze; no spirit fails to come. All creation stands solemn and still; heaven is clear and serene. Receiving the mandate at the center, the realm's foundation is restored forever. The spirit arrives—celebration in deepest shade; wind horses and cloud chariots seem to bear a response. Form, sound, and bearing are fully arrayed—bright shines civilization. May we approach the blessed age of Yu and Shun—come to feast, come to rest. Second libation, 《Solemn Repose》: stern stand the four eaves—the spirit has settled here. Though offerings abound in ritual, pure sincerity rests in the heart alone.

有來振振,相我熙事。 載酌陶匏,以成毖祀。 終獻,《穆安》誠一為專,禮三而稱。 孰陪邦祠? 惟我同姓。 金絲屢調,圭玉交映。 是謂熙成,福來神聽。
Companions come in stately array, assisting our glorious rite. Pottery and gourd vessels are filled with libation—the pure sacrifice is brought to completion. Final libation, 《Solemn Repose》: sincerity made one and whole—the rite thrice performed fulfills its name. Who stands beside us at the state rite? Only our own clansmen. Golden strings are tuned again and again; jade scepters gleam one against another. This is the glorious fulfillment—blessings arrive and the spirits attend.

The Emperor partakes of the sacred blessing, 《Sacrificial Repose》: who says Heaven is distant? Utmost sincerity opens the way. Who says the earth lies deep below? With Heaven it is one. The ritual officer declares the rite at rest; flutes and bells fall silent like clouds dispersing. Wine and thatch are cleared away; the sacrificial meat stands are withdrawn. Dark and bright realms alike know no fear; within and without, all rejoice as one. When the rite is complete—what does it mean? Heaven and earth keep the same rhythm. For Emperor Xiaozong's personal Ming Hall sacrifice the music was largely unchanged, yet the pieces for offering silks at the Heaven and Earth seats, libation, Taizu's libation, the Emperor's entry into the minor pavilion and return to the great pavilion, the secondary offering, and escorting the spirits away were each revised and polished. Taizu's silk-offering hymn was retitled 《Broad Repose》, his libation 《Reverent Repose》; Taizong's silk-offering hymn became 《Transformative Repose》, his libation 《Illustrious Repose》.
