Music 11 (Hymn Section 5) ○ Sacrifices to the mountains, prefectures, seas, and rivers; sacrifices to the Great Fire and the Great Stars; in the Dazhong xiangfu era, when imperial titles were added to the Five Sacred Mountains—eight presentation hymns for welcoming the spirits, to the tune "Jing'an."

鍾石既作,俎豆在前。 雲旗飛揚,神光肅然。 當駕飆,來乎青圓。 言備縟禮,享茲吉蠲。 冊入門,《正安》節彼喬嶽,神明之府。 秩秩威儀,肅肅靈宇。
The bells and stone chimes have begun; the stands and vessels stand ready before the altar. Cloud-banners billow on high, and the spirit-light is grave and still. Mount the rushing wind and come to the azure vault of heaven. We declare the full rites prepared—receive this blessed and purified offering. When the register is borne through the gate, to the tune "Zheng'an": how lofty that great peak—the dwelling of the spirits. In ordered majesty the ritual proceeds; in solemn stillness stands the spirit hall.

懿號克崇,庶物鹹睹。 帝籍升名,式綏九土。 酌獻東嶽,《嘉安》節彼岱宗,有嚴廟貌。 惟辟奉天,依神設教。 帝典焜煌,嘉薦普淖。 至靈格思,殊祥是效。
The noble title is duly raised on high, and all creation may look upon it. The emperor's register rises with the new name, to bring peace to the nine domains. Libation to the Eastern Peak, to the tune "Jia'an": how ordered is Mount Dai, with its solemn temple aspect. The sovereign alone serves Heaven, and through the spirits establishes the teaching of the realm. The imperial ordinances shine forth; fine offerings spread in abundance. The highest spirit draws near in acceptance; wondrous blessings are the proof.

The Southern Peak stands as guardian in the heat of summer, hoarding this spirit-light. It spreads its bounty to all things, making them rich and thriving. Warm jade is carved and offered as the emblem of honor. The spirits' favor shines clear; blessings abound and harvests overflow. Western Peak

瞻言太華,奠芳作鎮。 典冊是膺,等威以峻。 上公奉儀,祀宗薦信。 介祉萬邦,永配坤順。 北嶽仰止靈嶽,鎮於朔方。 增崇懿號,度越彝章。
We gaze upon great Mount Hua, set in splendor as the western guardian. The canonical register is received, and its rank and dignity are raised on high. The chief minister upholds the rites, offering to the spirit-lord with true devotion. May blessing reach every realm, forever joined with Earth's gentle yielding. Northern Peak—look up to that spirit mountain, guardian of the northern realm. The noble title is raised still higher, transcending the ancient ordinances.

祗薦嘉樂,式陳令芳。 永資純佑,國祚蕃昌。 中嶽岩岩神嶽,作鎮中央。 肅奉徽冊,尊名孔章。 聿降飆駕,載獻蘭觴。 熙事允洽,寶祚彌昌。
We reverently offer fine music and spread forth its noble fragrance. May pure blessing endure forever, and the dynasty flourish without end. Central Peak—towering spirit mountain, guardian at the heart of the realm. We solemnly present the emblematic register; the honored name shines forth in glory. Descend on the rushing wind-chariot and receive the orchid cup we raise. The glorious rite is fully complete; the sacred mandate grows ever more bright.

Escorting the spirits, to the tune "Jing'an": we reverently offer the great name and perform the solemn, luminous rite. The rite has Chu splendor; the offering is made as though the spirit were truly here. The offerings are complete; every detail of ritual bearing is in place. As the register is borne in and out, to the tune "Zheng'an": the famed peaks are set in their domains; the imperial rite is duly raised. On this chosen auspicious day, guests of every rank gather in procession. Warm jade is carved with the sacred text; scarlet robes are worn in proper stillness. Eastern prospect, welcoming the spirits, to the tune "Ning'an": supreme virtue is Wood's; Goumang is the spirit who rules. From Mount Yi and Mount Dai to the Huai and the sea—their merit rests with the people. The altar glows with light; the host of spirits is gathered to receive our rite. Sashes and skirts hang low; jade pendants cluster at the belt. As we take up the rite, the spirits feast and rejoice. The emperor has ordained this distant sacrifice—who would dare withhold their share. Moving to and from their stations—in solemn grace, in harmony. Presenting jade and silks, to the tune "Ming'an": we sacrifice to exalt virtue; every offering follows its proper form. Solemnly we perform the rite; every ascent and descent is perfectly timed.

Clear and pure in every detail—nothing fails of reverent offering. The scribe's record is without fault; the spirits therefore draw near. Libation offering, to the tune "Cheng'an": from the first this eastern land holds moisture without end. Now spring unfolds; gladly we offer its finest fragrance. We sacrifice with mugwort and straw and sink them in offering, following their nature to hold and nurture. Never dry, never wasted—they bring down blessing and good fortune.

Mount Song, Mount Ji, Mount Heng, and Mount Huo—and with them their seas and rivers. This is the season of growth and nurture; it blesses our southern land. We lay out solemn offerings and silks; the spirits descend to receive them. To assist and to comfort them—blessings beyond count are heaped high. Libation offering, to the tune "Cheng'an": the warm wind matches the pitch-pipes; the Vermilion Bird opens the season. Solemn and bright is the sacrifice; fine platters are laid out in rows.

牲用牷物,樂奏蕤賓。 克綏永福,祐此下民。 送神,《凝安》鼓鍾云云,龡管伊伊。 神既醉飽,曰送言歸。 山有厚藏,水有靈德。 物其永依,往奠炎宅。
Pure red victims are offered; music sounds in the Ruibin mode. May lasting blessing be secured; protect the people below. Escorting the spirits, to the tune "Ning'an": drums and bells roll on; flutes and pipes sing long and clear. The spirits are drunk and full; we bid them farewell and send them home. Mountains hold deep treasure; waters hold spirit virtue. May all things rely on them forever; go to dwell in the realm of fire.

Lofty and vast, fused and joined—this is truly the center. It spreads its breath and reports its merit; it blesses this whole region. At the pit altar we sacrifice; the six ensembles ring clear. May the spirits rejoice; we pour libation with the great jade cup. Escorting the spirits, to the tune "Ning'an": return to your dwelling; establish the central realm. Let this spirit never fail; let the four quarters take it as their model.

The spirits never rest; the sacrifices never fail. To receive and to repay—for ten thousand years. Western prospect, welcoming the spirits, to the tune "Ning'an": all things follow in joy; the season belongs to Metal. At the suburban altar we welcome the season's breath and gaze toward the host of spirits. Elegant songs are our music; jade and victims are our offering. You make the people's blessing; forever aid their fulfillment.

We delight our spirits with music; stands and trays brim with savory feast. We say the spirits return—the western realm is their dwelling. Birds and fish flourish there; plants and trees spread abroad. Enrich our marshes and lowlands; nourish our high plateaus. Northern prospect, welcoming the spirits, to the tune 《Ning'an》: imperial virtue rides Water's power; the season seals all away in store—we offer pure victims and ale, a sign for the northern realm.

Seas and mountains are their home; the spirits' gifts know no limit. They fully receive our pure offering; blessings descend in overflowing measure. Libation offering, to the tune 《Cheng'an》: bleak cold fixes the shade; fallen husks sweep the threshing floor clean. All things ripen in their season; millet and grain breathe fragrance. We draw near in sincerity at the northern suburban altar. Thus we follow the rites of this direction. How shall we assist the spirits? We offer this noble cup.

Spring's azure breath first unfolds; every rite is set in order. The perfumer aids the pouring; fragrance rises rich and full. Honor your ritual bearing—it too is a sacred rule. When the spirits draw near, may they never find me wanting. Presenting jade and silks, to the tune 《Ming'an》: the calendar office proclaims the season—the first month of spring. We raise the seasonal sacrifice and process before the spirits in their power.

鼓鍾既設,珪帛具陳。 阜蕃庶物,以福我民。 東嶽位酌獻,《成安》岩岩天齊,自古在昔。 膚寸之雲,四方其澤。 惟時東作,祀事乃飭。 惠我無疆,恩沾動植。
Drums and bells stand ready; jade and silks are laid out in full. Make all things flourish and multiply, and bless our people. Eastern Peak station, libation offering, to the tune 《Cheng'an》: towering Mount Tianqi—so it has been since antiquity. Clouds no wider than a handbreadth spread; the four quarters receive their rain. At the season when the east begins its work, the sacrifice is set in order. Favor us without end; your grace reaches every living thing and plant.

東鎮位惟山有鎮,雄於其方。 東孰為雄? 於沂之疆。 祀事有時,爰舉舊章。 我望匪遙,庶幾燕饗。 東海位
Eastern Prefecture station: mountains alone can be guardians, each mighty in its domain. In the east, which is chief? It is Mount Yi in its domain. The sacrifice has its season; we raise the ancient ordinances once more. Our gaze is not distant; we may hope you will feast in peace. Eastern Sea station

澒洞鴻濛,天與無極。 導納江、漢,節宣南北。 順助其功,善下惟德。 我祀孔時,以介景福。 東瀆位我祀伊何? 於彼長淮。 導源桐柏,委注蓬萊。
Vast and primordial, without limit—the sky shares its endless reach. It guides the Yangtze and Han and balances north and south. It aids their work in turn; to settle low is its true virtue. Our sacrifice is perfectly timed, that great blessing may come. Eastern River station: what do we sacrifice for? It is for the long Huai River. Its source rises at Tongbai and pours away toward the eastern sea.

扞齊護楚,宣威示懷。 豆籩列陳,亦孔之偕。 亞、終獻,酌獻 〈(四位並同)〉。 我祀孔肅,神其安留。 容與裴回,若止若浮。 洽此重觴,申以百羞。 無我斁遺,萬邦之休。
It shields Qi and guards Chu, showing power and gentle care. Stands and platters are laid in rows, all in perfect array. Second and final offerings, libation presentation (The four positions use the same hymn.) Our sacrifice is deeply solemn; may the spirits rest in peace. At ease they drift and turn, now still, now floating. Join this double cup and extend it with a hundred dishes. Do not find me remiss—blessing for every realm.

Summer's vermilion blaze grows full; our sacrifice is set in order. What is this sacrifice for? For mountains and rivers, each in due rank. As though we might see them—reverent, restrained, and still. O spirits, how full your power! Leisurely you come to us! First offering, hand-washing, ascending and descending, to the tune 《Tong'an》: the sacred altar glows; we raise a pure and reverent rite. The perfumer pours the cleansing water and aids our primary offering.

於降於登,以作以止。 莫不肅雍,告靈饗矣。 奠玉幣,《明安》我祀我享,儀物孔周。 一純斯舉,二精聿修。 璞兮其溫,絲兮其紑。 是薦潔蠲,神兮安留。
Descending and ascending, moving and resting. All is solemn and harmonious; we tell the spirits—the feast is ready. Presenting jade and silks, to the tune 《Ming'an》: we sacrifice and feast; every ritual object is in place. One pure offering is raised; the two spirits are duly honored. Uncarved jade, warm to the touch; silk, bright and fine. We offer them pure and clean—O spirits, abide in peace.

In that place one stands as sovereign; thereby the quarter is secured. The southern rites proceed in order; the distant sacrifice keeps its constant form. 維南有山,於彼會稽。 作鎮在昔,神則司之。 厥有舊典,以祀以時。 百味維旨,靈其燕矣。 南海位維水善下,利物曰功。 逶迤百川,誰歟朝宗?
In the south stands a mountain—there at Kuaiji. Made guardian long ago, the spirit rules it still. It has ancient ordinances—for sacrifice at the proper season. A hundred flavors, all exquisite—may the spirits feast in joy. Southern Sea station: water alone knows how to settle low; to benefit all things is its merit. The hundred streams wind on—who will turn to pay homage?

蕩蕩大受,於焉會同。 膋蕭列陳,以答鴻濛。 南瀆位四瀆之利,經營中國。 南曰大江,險兮天設。 維爾有神,隃其廟食。 望秩孔時,我心翼翼。
Vast is the great receiving sea; there all waters meet as one. Roasted offerings and fragrant herbs are laid in rows, answering the primordial void. Southern River station: the four rivers' bounty, sustaining the central realm. The southern river is the Great River—how perilous, a work of Heaven! You alone have a spirit; yonder your temple receives its offerings. The distant sacrifice is perfectly timed; my heart is full of care.

Second and final offerings, libation presentation: the spirits wander—vast and bright, answering our rite. Calm and unhurried; subtle resonance answers us. The performance is ready; the eight tones keep perfect time. The double cup is offered again; the hundred rites are fully joined. 薦徹豆籩,熙事備成。 靈兮將歸,羽旄紛紜。 飄其逝矣,浮空薾雲。 悵然顧瞻,有撫懷心。 中央迎神,《凝安》天作高山,屹然中峙。 經營厥宇,萬億鹹遂。
Offerings are withdrawn, stands and platters cleared—the glorious rite is complete. O spirit, you are about to depart; feather banners swirl in profusion. You drift away and vanish, floating through empty wisps of cloud. Sadly we turn to gaze after you, our hearts full of tender remembrance. Central quarter, welcoming the spirits, to the tune 《Ning'an》: Heaven made the lofty peak, standing firm at the center. It governs its realm, and countless beings all flourish in its care.

火熙土王,爰舉時祀。 繩繩宣延,仿佛來止。 初獻盥洗、升降,《同安》思來感格,肅雍不忘。 禮儀既備,濟濟蹌蹌。 潔蠲致敬,往薦其芳。 交若有承,神兮孔饗。
Fire blazes bright and Earth holds sway; thus we hold the seasonal rite. Reverently the summons goes forth; you seem almost to come and abide. First offering, hand-washing, ascending and descending, to the tune 《Tong'an》: mindful of your coming, we are moved to receive you—solemn, harmonious, and never forgetful. The rites are fully prepared; the officers move in stately array. Purified and cleansed, we show our reverence and go forth to offer fragrance. We meet as though you receive us; O spirits, feast abundantly.

Presenting jade and silks, to the tune 《Ming'an》: on this purified day we look up in hope, and lofty spirits descend. How shall we declare our sincerity? The heart can only speak through these offerings as its stand-ins. Baskets are filled with their offerings. Treasures lie upon their mats. 與天齊極,伊嵩之高。 顯靈效異,神休孔昭。 飭我祀事,實俎鸞膋。 以侑旨酒,其馨有椒。 中鎮位禹畫九州,河內曰冀。 霍山崇崇,作鎮積勢。
Level with Heaven's summit—Mount Song rises so high. The spirits show their power in wonders; divine blessing shines forth. We set our sacrifice in order; stands are heaped with fragrant roasted offerings. We assist with noble wine, fragrant with pepper and spice. Central Prefecture station: Yu mapped the Nine Provinces, and the land within the Yellow River was called Ji. Mount Huo towers on high, made a guardian peak, gathering its mighty force.

我祀如何? 百末旨味。 承神燕矣,諸神畢至。 亞、終獻,酌獻禮樂既成,肅容有常。 奄留消搖。 申畢重觴。 仰臚所求,降福滂洋。 師象山則,以氵兄皇章。
What shall our sacrifice be? A hundred blended flavors, all exquisite. We receive the spirits in peaceful feast, and every spirit has come. Second and final offerings, libation presentation: the rites and music are complete, and solemn bearing keeps its proper form. For a moment you linger, drifting at ease. We extend and complete the double cup. We look up and declare our prayer; blessings descend in overflowing measure. Following the mountain's example, we proclaim the imperial decree.

Escorting the spirits (The melody is the same as for welcoming the spirits.) From earliest dawn, the spirits too rejoice. Eager to gallop forth, the spirit carriage is already raised. Blessing sounds send you forth; the spirits now return home. May it last forever; grant us your blessing. Western quarter, welcoming the spirits, to the tune 《Ning'an》

有岌斯安,有涵斯洽。 聿相厥成,允祀是答。 爰飭乃奏,乃奏既協。 於昭降止,是遵是接。 初獻盥洗、升降,《同安》靡實不新,靡陳不濯。 人之弗蠲,矧敢將酌。
It stands lofty and secure; it embraces all in harmony. Thus we aid its fulfillment; this sacrifice is our true reply. We set the music in order; the performance is already in harmony. In radiant splendor you descend and abide; we follow and receive you. First offering, hand-washing, ascending and descending, to the tune 《Tong'an》: no offering but what is fresh, nothing set out that is not cleansed. If we ourselves are not pure, how dare we pour the libation?

Mount Wu towers on high, west of the Mian River. We gaze upon that ridge, bright and never astray. You aid the sacred peak; I pour the first libation. For every traveler, this is the foundation where all ascend. Western Sea station: it overspreads and soaks the earth's axis, enriching and multiplying its vast domain. Its ancient canon is consulted; steps and enclosing walls stand ready.

Season after season it is never neglected; the great jade cup is poured in libation. Why should the river come first? It is truly the place where the waters converge. Western River station: from Kunlun's heights it flows hidden beneath the earth. Considering this overflowing bounty, how can the lord not do likewise? In ancient days the central domain reached the sea, and the rites were duly maintained. When the full moon has passed, the guardian spirit first receives the libation cup.

What is the Great Constellation? In the north stands the Dipper. Once it was called the Comet Star—a name most fitting. In quiet honor we repay its service; with purified rites we hasten to offer. At leisure with the noble libation, we savor this rich wine. Lord of Bright Manifestation station, libation offering, to the tune 《You'an》: the Zhou created the Director of Fire, listing the office under the Minister of Summer. We still follow the great Zhou rites, yet to establish this rite anew is no easy task.

Look upon that mound of Shang, and ever honor how fire was first brought forth. These humble cassia and pepper—we do not offer them as repayment. Secondary and final offerings, to the tune 《Wen'an》: fire has sunk and hidden away; the oak faggots for kindling lie still. Once again it stirs toward us, and elm and willow are gathered. Spirit carriages trail their plumes—may the spirit yet linger here in peace. Accept these three libations, gracious and warm in every word.

Descent of the spirit, to the tune 《Gao'an》, gong mode on the round bell: resplendent the imperial design, blazing the virtue of fire. Extending the spirits' gifts, embracing every realm. Grain offerings overflow; stands and vessels breathe fragrance. For ten thousand years, our answering sacrifice shall never cease.

Yellow Bell in the jue mode: Mars's station blazes with light. It stands forth in the chen position and hides in the xu quarter. In the month of late autumn, the pitch-pipes reach Wushe. The harvest is complete; the work of fire is finished. We offer pure sacrifice and worship—with solemn care and reverent aid. Wind-horses and cloud-chariots—may they yet come to us! Guxian Wash in the yu mode: bright is our sovereign; the great sacrifice is reverently performed. The officials perform the rite in solemn order and present the morning ceremony.

禮惟其稱,物惟其時。 神之聽之,福祿來為。 升殿,《正安》猗與明壇,右平左墄! 冕服斯皇,玉珮有節。 陟降惟寅,匪徐匪疾。 式崇大祀,禮文鹹秩。
The rites match their measure; the offerings match their season. May the spirits hear; blessing and rank draw near. Ascending the hall, to the tune 《Zheng'an》: how splendid the bright altar, level on the right and stepped on the left! Court robes shine forth; jade pendants keep their rhythm. Ascent and descent come only at the proper hour—neither slow nor hasty. Thus we exalt the great sacrifice; every detail of ritual stands in order.

恭惟火正,自陶唐氏。 邑於商丘,配食辰祀。 有功在民,有德在位。 敢替典常。 惟恭奉幣。 捧俎,《豐安》萬彙攸成,四方寧謐。 工祝致告,普存民力。
We reverently recall the Director of Fire, from the age of Taotang. Enfeoffed at Shangqiu, he shares the constellation sacrifice. His merit rests with the people; his virtue rests in his office. We dare not alter the ancient canon. We reverently present these silks alone. Raising the stand, to the tune 《Feng'an》: all things are brought to completion; the four quarters are at peace. The ritual officer proclaims; may the people's strength be preserved everywhere.

We present this victim. For the stand it is abundantly full. Grant abundant blessing and harmonize the people's ways. Great Constellation station, libation offering, to the tune 《You'an》: every task is complete; noble virtue shines clear. Heaven and earth blend in harmony; the fragrant ale runs clear. We pour with the jade libation cup; jasper goblets brim full. They roam and circle, coming to feast and to abide in peace.

Lord of Bright Manifestation station, libation offering, to the tune 《You'an》: we broadly raise the sacrifice and exalt his consort. Fragrance is here; clear wine is already raised. 幣玉肅陳,笙簧具舉。 桂醑浮觴。 瓊羞溢俎。 禮有三獻,式和且序。 神具醉止,慶流寰宇。 送神,《理安》神靈降鑒,天地回旋。 惟馨薦矣,既醉歆焉。
Silks and jade are laid out in solemn array; pipes and reeds sound together. Osmanthus ale brims in the cups. Fine delicacies overflow the stands. The rite has three offerings, harmonious and in order. The spirits are fully drunk and at rest; celebration flows through the world. Escorting the spirits, to the tune 《Li'an》: the spirits descend and gaze; heaven and earth wheel about. Fragrance alone is offered; drunk already, they delight in it.

The stewards withdraw; not one detail of the rite is missed. Blessing heaps high, auspice descends—may the Son of Heaven live ten thousand years.
