天臨有赫,上法乾元。 鏗鏘六樂,儼恪千官。 皇儀允肅,玉坐居尊。 文明在禦,禮備誠存。 公卿入門,《正安》堯天協紀,舜日揚光。 淑慎爾止,率由舊章。
Heaven approaches in splendor; on high he takes the Qian Origin as his model. The six ensembles ring clear; a thousand officers stand grave and correct. Imperial ceremony is duly solemn; upon the jade throne he holds the seat of honor. Civil brilliance attends the throne; rites stand complete and sincerity remains. As the ministers pass through the gate, 《Zheng'an》 plays: Yao's heavens keep the seasons; Shun's sun spreads its light. Be pure and careful in your conduct; follow the established statutes.

佩環濟濟,金石鏘鏘。 威儀炳煥,至德昭彰。 上壽,《禧安》乾健為君,坤柔曰臣。 惟其臣子,克奉君親。 永禦皇極,以綏兆民。 稱觴獻壽,山嶽嶙峋。
Jade pendants chime in profusion; bells and stones ring clear. Solemn bearing shines forth; supreme virtue is made manifest. Offering longevity—《Xi'an》: Qian strength makes the ruler; Kun softness names the minister. Only such ministers and sons can serve their lord and parent. Forever guarding the royal pole, thereby bringing peace to the myriad people. They raise cups and offer long life; mountains stand rugged as peaks.

舜《韶》更奏,堯酒浮觴。 皇情載懌,洪算無疆。 基隆郟鄏,德茂陶唐。 山巍日煥,地久天長。 皇帝舉酒,第一盞用《白龜》聖德昭宣,神龜出焉。 載白其色,或遊於川。
Shun's 《Shao》 is played once more; Yao's wine floats in the goblets. The emperor's heart is wholly pleased; his great span knows no limit. His foundation rises high as Jia and Fu; his virtue flourishes like the Pottery Tang. Mountains tower, the sun blazes; earth endures, heaven lasts forever. The emperor raises his wine; for the first cup they use 《White Tortoise》: sagely virtue is proclaimed abroad, and the divine tortoise appears. It bears the white of its hue, sometimes roaming in rivers.

名符在沼,瑞應巢蓮。 登歌丹陛,紀異靈篇。 第二盞,《甘露》天德冥應,仁澤載濡。 其甘如醴,其凝若珠。 雲表潛結,顥英允敷。 降於竹柏,永昭瑞圖。
Its name accords with "in the marsh"; as an omen it nests upon lotus. They ascend to sing upon the cinnabar steps and inscribe the marvel in sacred annals. For the second cup, 《Sweet Dew》: Heaven's virtue responds in the hidden realm; humane grace saturates and moistens. Sweet as fine ale, it congeals like pearls. It forms secretly atop the clouds; bright glory is truly spread abroad. It falls upon bamboo and cypress, forever proclaiming the chart of omens.

For the third cup, 《Purple Lingzhi》: radiant and lush, it springs forth without roots. Even rush down loses its color; the bronze pool records its renown. At dawn its spread shows the marvel; three blooms share their splendor. It is written in the sagely archives, brightening our civilization. For the fourth cup, 《Auspicious Grain》.

嘉彼合穎,致貢升平。 異標南畝,瑞應西成。 德至於地,皇祗效靈。 和同之象,煥發祥經。 第五盞,《玉兔》盛德好生,網開三面。 明視標奇,昌辰乃見。
How fine those ears grown together—tribute offered in an age of peace. A marvel marked in the southern fields; an omen answered in the western harvest. When virtue reaches the earth, the Imperial Earth Spirit shows its power. Signs of harmony joined; a radiant chapter in the book of omens. For the fifth cup, 《Jade Rabbit》: abundant virtue cherishes life; the hunting net is opened on three sides. Its clear gaze marks the wonder; in flourishing times it appears.

育質雪園,淪精月殿。 著於樂章,色含江練。 群臣舉酒,《正安》戶牖嚴丹扆,鵷鸞造紫庭。 懇祈南嶽壽,勢拱北辰星。 得士於茲盛,基邦固以寧。 誠明一何至,金石與丹青。
It nurtures its form in the snowy garden and refines its essence in the moon palace. Recorded in the music chapters, its hue holds the sheen of river silk. The ministers raise their wine—《Zheng'an》: doors and windows stand solemn before the vermillion screen; court birds come to the purple hall. They earnestly pray for the Southern Marchmount's long life; all bow toward the North Star. Here men of talent gather in abundance; the founding of the state is thereby secure. How perfect their sincerity and clarity—worthy of metal, stone, and painted record.

簪紱若雲屯,晨趨閶闔門。 侁々羅禹會,濟濟奉堯樽。 周禮觀明備,天儀仰晬溫。 高卑陳表著,同拱帝王尊。 待漏造王庭,威儀盛莫京。 紛綸簪組列,清越佩環聲。
Caps and ribbons gather like clouds; at dawn they hurry to the Gate of Heaven. Countless as Yu's gathering they stand; in full array they raise Yao's goblets. Zhou ritual displays enlightenment complete; heavenly ceremony gazes upon radiant warmth. High and low show their stations; together they bow to the emperor's majesty. Waiting for the water clock, they enter the royal court; no ceremony in the capital is more grand. Rank upon rank of ribbons arrayed; clear and piercing ring the jade pendants.

禮飲終三爵,《韶》音畢九成。 永同鳧藻樂,千載奉升平。 群臣第一盞畢,作《玄德升聞》治定資神武,功成顯睿文。 貢輸庭實旅,朝會羽儀分。 偃革千年運,垂衣萬乘君。 孰知堯、舜力,明德自升聞。
The ritual drinking ends with three toasts; the 《Shao》 music completes the nine movements. Forever sharing the joy of duckweed and algae; for a thousand years they serve enduring peace. When the ministers finish their first cup, they perform 《Mysterious Virtue Ascends to Hearing》: order settled draws on divine martial power; success complete reveals sagely culture. Tribute is brought in and court stores are filled; at the assembly the feather regalia takes its stations. Weapons are laid aside for a thousand-year fortune; he drapes his robes—the lord of ten thousand chariots. Who can know the power of Yao and Shun? Bright virtue itself rises to be heard.

約法皇綱正,崇文寶曆昌。 遒人振木鐸,農器鑄幹將。 瑞日含王宇,卿雲藹帝鄉。 萬邦成一統,鴻祚與天長。 六變宸扆威容盛,聲明禮樂宣。 九州臻禹會,萬國戴堯天。
The summarized law sets the imperial net aright; culture is honored and the precious calendar flourishes. Heralds shake wooden clappers; farm tools are cast from Ganjiang iron. The auspicious sun embraces the royal house; ministerial clouds billow over the emperor's domain. Ten thousand states are united as one; great fortune endures as long as heaven. Six changes: the imperial screen's majesty overflows; fame is declared and ritual music proclaimed. The nine regions gather as at Yu's assembly; ten thousand states bear Yao's heaven.

貢職輸琛贐。 皇猷煥簡編。 含和均暢茂,鴻慶結非禋。 朝會儼威儀,司常建九旗。 舞容分綴兆,文物辨威蕤。 運格桃林牧,祥開洛水龜。 帝功潛日用,化俗自登熙。
Tribute offices present precious gifts. Imperial plans brighten the bamboo annals. Harmony is blended, ease and abundance flourish; great blessings gather—not by sacrifice alone. At court assembly bearing stands solemn; the Director of Constants raises nine banners. Dance patterns divide the string arrangements; ritual objects mark the splendor of majesty. Fortune matches the herdsman of Peach Grove; auspicious signs open with the Luo tortoise. Imperial merit works day by day in secret; customs are transformed and rise to brightness.

螭階聊載筆,紀瑞軼唐、虞。 丹鳳儀金奏,黃龍負寶圖。 群材薪棫樸,仁政煦蒲盧。 蕩蕩巍巍德,豚魚信自孚。 接聖宅神都,方來五達區。 國賢熙帝載,靈命握乾符。
For a time at the dragon steps he records with his brush; omens recorded surpass Tang and Yu. The cinnabar phoenix marks the golden music; the yellow dragon bears the treasure chart. Talents are gathered like fuel for the chop-wood; humane rule warms even the pupa-fish. Vast and lofty is his virtue; even pig and fish truly trust in him. Joined to the sage, he dwells in the divine capital; from every quarter the five roads converge. Worthies of the realm glorify the imperial record; the spiritual mandate holds the Heavenly tally.

至化當純被,斯文益誕敷。 車書今混一,聖治奉三無。 聖皇臨大寶,八表湊才賢。 經緯文天賦,剛柔德日宣。 建邦隆柱石,造物運陶甄。 共致升平業,綿長保億年。
Supreme transformation should purely enfold all; this culture spreads ever more widely. Today chariots and script are united as one; sagely rule upholds the Three Non-Actions. The sage emperor faces the great treasure; from the eight directions worthies assemble. Warp and woof—the pattern heaven bestowed; firm and yielding—his virtue is daily proclaimed. To found the state he raises pillar-stones; the Creator's transforming work turns the potter's wheel. Together they achieve the work of enduring peace; continuously they preserve a hundred million years.

神化妙無方,巍巍邁百王。 鶴書搜隱逸,龍陛策賢良。 拱揖朝群後,賓筵辟四方。 洪圖基億載,淳曜德彌光。 第二盞畢,《天下大定》皇猷敷八表,武誼肅三邊。 蘭錡韜兵日,靈台偃伯年。
Divine transformation is subtle beyond reckoning; lofty and high—he surpasses a hundred kings. Imperial summons seek hidden worthies; at the dragon steps he tests able men. He bows and yields to the host of lords; guest feasts open to the four quarters. His grand design foundations a hundred million ages; pure radiance—his virtue grows ever brighter. When the second cup is finished—《Under Heaven Greatly Settled》: imperial designs spread to the eight directions; martial righteousness secures the three frontiers. Days when spear-shields are sheathed; years when the Spirit Tower lays by its weapons.

奉珍皆述職,削衽盡朝天。 功德超前古,音徽播管弦。 伐叛天威震,恢疆帝業多。 削平侔肅殺,涵煦極陽和。 蹈厲觀周舞,風雲入漢歌。 功成推大定,歸馬偃周戈。
Presenting treasures—all fulfill their duties; laying aside barbarian dress—all attend court. Meritorious virtue surpasses the former ancients; fame spreads through pipes and strings. Punishing rebels—heaven's might thunders; restoring the borders—the imperial enterprise grows vast. Conquest and pacification match stern execution; nurturing warmth—utmost harmony of yang. Stomping boldly they watch Zhou dance; wind and clouds enter the Han song. When merit is complete, great settlement is proclaimed; horses are returned and Zhou halberds laid aside.

六變惕厲日乾乾,潛蟠或躍淵。 伐謀參上策,受鉞總中堅。 田訟歸周日,民謠戴舜年。 風雲自冥感,嘉會翼飛天。 壺關方逆命,投袂起親征。 虎旅聊攻伐,梟巢遽蕩平。
Six changes: vigilant and vigorous, days upon days; coiled in the deep or leaping from the abyss. War stratagems inform the highest plans; receiving the battle-axe he commands the central host. Field disputes return to Zhou's age; folk songs celebrate Shun's years. Wind and clouds stir of themselves in the hidden realm; glorious gatherings wing their way to heaven. At Pot Pass they presently rebel against the mandate; he flings back his sleeves and leads the campaign in person. Tiger troops for a time attack; the owl's nest is swiftly swept away.

天威清朔漠,仁澤被黎氓。 按節皇輿復,洋洋載頌聲。 蠢茲淮海帥,保據毒黎苗,不悟龍興漢,猶同犬吠堯。 六師方雨施,孤壘自冰消。 千載逢嘉運,華夷奉聖朝。
Heaven's might sweeps the northern wastes clean; merciful grace covers the people. To the measured beat the imperial carriage returns, bearing vast songs of praise. Foolish are these Huaihai commanders, entrenched and venomous among the people; they fail to see Han's dragon arise, yet bark at Yao like dogs. The six armies spread like timely rain; lone strongholds melt away like ice. After a thousand years they meet a glorious age; Chinese and barbarians alike submit to the holy court.

上遊荊楚要,澤國洞庭深。 自識同文世,皆回拱極心。 一戎聊杖鉞,九土盡輸金。 大定功成後,薰風入舜琴。 席卷定巴、邛,西遐盡率從。 岷、峨難負阻,江、漢自朝宗。
He tours the vital points of Jing and Chu; in the waterlands Dongting runs deep. They know themselves in an age of unified culture; all turn their hearts toward the pole. With one campaign he briefly takes up the battle-axe; the nine regions all present tribute. When great settlement is complete, the balmy breeze enters Shun's zither. Like a rolling mat he settles Ba and Qiong; the far west all submits of itself. Min and E cannot long resist; the Yangtze and Han turn of themselves toward court.

述職方舟集,驅車九折通。 粲然書國史,冠古耀豐功。 銳旅慶回旋,邊防盡晏然。 鍵櫜方偃武,飛將亦韜弦。 震曜資平壘,文明協麗天。 洸洸成大業,赫奕在青編。
They come to report their duties in fleets of boats; chariots pass the nine bends. Brilliantly recorded in the state annals, surpassing the ancients in glorious achievement. The keen troops celebrate their triumphant return; the borders are wholly at peace. Keys and quivers are laid aside as arms rest; flying generals too sheathe their bows. Thunder and glory secure the pacified camps; civil splendor harmonizes with radiant heaven. Grandly they accomplish the great work, splendid forever in the written records.

淳化中朝會二十三首上壽,《和安》四序伊始,三陽肇開。 條風入律,玉琯飛灰。 望雲肅謁,鳴佩斯來。 稱觴獻壽,瞻拱星回。
Twenty-three pieces for the Chunhua mid-court assembly: offering longevity—《He'an》: the four seasons begin; the three yang forces first unfold. The spring wind enters the pitch-pipes; ash flies from the jade pitch-tubes. Gazing at the clouds they come in solemn audience; jade pendants chime as they approach. They raise cups and offer long life; gazing upward they bow as the stars wheel home.

一陽應候,萬國同文。 天正紀節,太史書雲。 凝旒在禦,列敘爰分。 壽觴斯薦,祝慶明君。 皇帝初舉酒,用《祥麟》聖皇禦寓,仁獸誕彰。 在郊旅貢,遊畤呈祥。
The first yang answers to the season; ten thousand lands share one script. The year's first month marks the season; the Grand Astrologer records the clouds. The emperor's robes hang still upon the throne; the ranks are arrayed in order. Cups of longevity are presented; blessings celebrate the enlightened sovereign. When the emperor first raises his cup, 《Xianglin》 is played: the sage emperor holds the realm; the benevolent beast appears. In the suburbs they come bearing tribute; at the suburban altar they reveal auspicious signs.

星辰是稟,草木無傷。 紀異信史,登歌太常。 再舉酒,《丹鳳》九苞薦瑞,戴德膺仁。 藻翰爰奮,靈音載振。 非時不見,有道則臻。 降岐匪匹,儀舜為鄰。
It receives its nature from the stars; grass and trees go unharmed. Wonders are recorded in trustworthy annals; songs rise in the Grand Music Office. Again they raise their cups—《Danfeng》: nine-fold blessings bring good omens; bearing virtue, they receive benevolence. Its plumes rise in splendor; spirit-notes resound. It does not appear untimely; where the Way prevails, it comes. It descends as at Qi, beyond compare; in bearing it is neighbor to Shun.

Third cup—《Heqing》: the Jing and Du flow clear, bright as a mirror. Clarity answers the precious age; light embraces the imperial palace. The depths reveal the sunken disk; swimming fish are seen clear to the bottom. The sage reign knows no end; divine favor is vast indeed. Fourth cup—《White Tortoise》

稽彼靈物,允昭聖皇。 浮石可躡,巢蓮益光。 金方正色,介族殊祥。 信書永耀,帝德無疆。 五舉酒,《瑞麥》芃芃嘉麥,擢秀分岐。 甘露夕灑,惠風晨吹。
Consider that spiritual creature: it truly glorifies the sage emperor. It treads on floating stone; nesting on the lotus it shines the brighter. In the west its color is true; among the scaled creatures it is a rare omen. Trustworthy records shine forever; imperial virtue knows no bound. Fifth cup—《Auspicious Wheat》: lush fine grain, splendid ears branching apart. Sweet dew falls in the evening; a gracious breeze blows at dawn.

良農告瑞,循吏稱奇。 歸美英主,折而貢之。 群臣初舉酒畢,作《化成天下》軒、昊方同德,成、康粗比肩。 素風惟普暢,皇道本無偏。 陰魄重輪滿,陽精五色圓。 要荒咸率服,卓越聖功全。
Good farmers report the omen; diligent magistrates call it a wonder. They ascribe the beauty to the enlightened lord, break off the ears and present them in tribute. When the ministers finish their first cup, they perform 《Transforming and Completing All Under Heaven》: matching Xuan and Hao in virtue, rivaling Cheng and Kang. Plain virtue spreads everywhere; the imperial Way was never partial. The yin orb fills its double wheel; the yang essence rounds in five colors. The farthest wastes all submit; transcendent sage merit is whole.

聖德比陶唐,千年祚運昌。 茂功雖不宰,鴻業自無疆。 極塞成清謐,齊民益阜康。 文明同日月,遐邇仰輝光。 六變蕩蕩無私世,巍巍至聖君。 山河分國寶,日月耀人文。
Sage virtue matches Yao of Tao Tang; a thousand years of fortune flourish. Though abundant merit needs no forcing, the grand enterprise is boundless of itself. The farthest frontier grows peaceful; the people grow ever more prosperous. Civil splendor equals sun and moon; far and near gaze upon its radiance. Six changes: an age vast and without partiality; a sage lord towering and supreme. Mountains and rivers apportion the land's treasures; sun and moon illumine human culture.

厭浥凝甘露,輪囷吐慶雲。 正聲兼《大雅》,洋溢應南薰。 鴻範合彝倫,調元四序均。 歲功天吏正,禦苑物華新。 底貢陳方物,來賓列遠人。 奉常呈九奏,嘉貺動穹旻。
Sweet dew condenses in abundance; billowing clouds bring celebration. Correct tones join with the 《Great Odes》, overflowing in answer to the southern breeze. The Great Plan harmonizes the constants; adjusting the origin, the four seasons are balanced. The year's harvest is duly assessed; in the imperial park all things bloom anew. Tribute from the realms displays regional goods; guests array the peoples from afar. The Director of Ceremonies presents the nine performances; gracious gifts stir the heavens.

大君隆至化,興運契千齡。 覲禮俄班瑞,夷賨盡實庭。 成文調露樂,奉聖拱辰星。 舞佾方更進,朝陽上楚萍。 禮樂昭王業,寰區致太平。 革車停北狩,雲稼屢西成。
The great lord exalts supreme transformation; a rising fortune matches a thousand years. Soon the audience rites display auspicious signs; tribute from the barbarians fills the hall. Culture perfected tunes the Dew Music; serving the sage, they bow toward the pole star. The dance rows advance anew; the morning sun rises on the duckweed of Chu. Ritual and music proclaim the royal work; the whole realm attains great peace. War chariots cease the northern campaigns; harvest clouds repeatedly ripen in the west.

國有詳延詔,鄉聞講誦聲。 日華融五色,遐邇仰文明。 亭障戢干戈,人心浹太和。 務農登寶穀,獵俊設雲羅。 儀鳳書良史,祥麟載雅歌。 嘉辰資宴喜,星拱弁峨峨。
The state issues edicts of broad instruction; in the villages one hears lecturing and recitation. Solar splendor blends the five colors; far and near look up to civilization. Border posts lay by spear and halberd; hearts are steeped in great harmony. Farming is promoted and precious grain harvested; outstanding talent is sought with nets spread wide. The phoenix rite is written by worthy historians; the auspicious unicorn enters refined song. The auspicious day supplies feasting and joy; stars bow around lofty caps.

冠古耀鴻徽,深仁及隱微。 《二南》、《江漢》詠,九奏鳳凰飛。 設虡羅鍾律,盈庭列舞衣。 文明資厚德,怡懌兆民歸。 再舉酒畢,《威加海內》
Surpassing the ancients, great emblems shine; deep benevolence reaches even the hidden and small. The 《Two Souths》 and 《Jiang and Han》 are sung; in nine performances the phoenix flies. Frame-drums, bells, and pitch-pipes are set out; the courtyard fills with rows of dance robes. Civil splendor draws on deep virtue; in joy the myriad people are drawn home. 革輅征汾、晉,隳城比燎毛。 桓桓勖軍旅,將將禦英豪。 神武誠無敵,天威詎可逃。 王師宣利澤,霈若沃春膏。 振萬方明德,疾徐咸可觀。 鏗鏘動金奏,蹈厲總朱幹。
Leather chariots campaign in Fen and Jin; cities fall like fur in the fire. Bold and vigorous they urge on the armies; generals upon generals repel the heroes. Divine martial prowess truly has no rival; heaven's might—who could flee it? The royal army proclaims its gracious bounty, pouring like spring rain on the land. Brilliance shakes the myriad regions; slow or fast, all may be witnessed. Metal music rings clear and loud; stomping boldly they raise the red shields.

夾進昭威武,申嚴警宴安。 守方推猛士,當用冒為冠。 六變宣榭始觀兵,桓桓稱鼓行。 一戎期大定,載纘議徂征。 善政從師律,神功冀《武成》。 勖哉勤誓眾,王業自經營。
Flanking advances display martial might; strict orders warn against complacency at the feast. Defending the frontier promotes fierce warriors; the helm should serve as their crown. Six changes: at the review terrace they first display the troops; bold and vigorous the drums advance. One campaign aims at great settlement; they take counsel for the expedition. Good government follows military discipline; divine achievement looks to 《Martial Completion》. Exert yourselves and swear diligence to the hosts; the royal enterprise is built of itself.

聲教方柔遠,甌、閩禮可招。 獻圖連日際,歸國象江潮。 撫運重熙盛,提封萬里遙。 還同有虞氏,文德格三苗。 南暨宣皇化,東吳奉乃神。 舞幹方耀德,執玉自來賓。
Civilizing influence now softens distant lands; Ou and Min may be called by ritual. They present maps day after day at the frontier; homeward states come like Yangtze tides. Upholding a glorious age of renewed prosperity; his rule extends ten thousand li. As in the age of Yu, civil virtue transforms the Three Miao. To the south they proclaim imperial transformation; eastern Wu serves this divine power. With shield-dances they now display virtue; bearing jade they come as guests.

巢伯朝丹陛,韓侯覲紫宸。 古今歸一揆,懷遠道彌新。 遺俗續陶唐,來蘇徯聖皇。 布昭湯吊伐,恢復漢封疆。 金鉞申戡剪,朱幹示發揚。 宜哉七德頌,千載播洋洋。
Chao Bo attends the crimson steps; Marquis Han views the purple court. Past and present return to one standard; cherishing the distant, the Way grows ever new. Surviving customs continue the age of Yao and Shun; restoration awaits the sage emperor. Proclaiming Tang's punitive campaigns; restoring the Han domain. Golden axes proclaim the conquest; red shields display martial glory. Fitting indeed are the seven virtues praised; for a thousand years they resound far and wide.

乃眷嘗西顧,偏師暫首征。 靈旗方直指,獷俗自亡精。 禹敘終馴致,堯封漸化成。 不須嚴尉候,於廓海彌清。 幹戚有司傳,威容著凱旋。 象成王業盛,役輟武功全。
Once he turned his gaze westward; a detached force for a time led the first campaign. Spirit banners point straight ahead; barbarian ways lose their spirit of themselves. Yu's ordering at last brings submission; Yao's enfeoffment gradually brings transformation. No need for strict border watches; the seas grow ever clearer in the vast realm. At the primal sacrifice comes great blessing—who will pacify and who will lead? It returns to honored kin—how filial is the sovereign king! They bear the engraved writ and the carved chapter. The Chief Minister and Palace Attendant bring the seal and treasure to the hall steps—《Zheng'an》—"Ancestral suburban rites are now complete; together they raise the canonical registers." You assist and support—your strength is in ceremony and bearing.

Ritual objects are set forth; rites and music are made clear. The Son of Heaven arrives and stops; he instructs you, his ministers.

In ascending and descending he follows the rule—reverent and diligent. Across the vast four seas, moral teaching takes shape. The seal and treasure pass out the gate—《Zheng'an》—"Heaven's gate stands ninefold; it opens grandly and widely." Gold regalia shines splendid; sashes hang with jade discs—some lead, some attend; all walk without overstepping. They fix the people's eyes and ears; all four quarters rejoice alike.

The emperor receives everlasting blessing—his achievements are not kept for himself alone. Having honored his sage father, he also gives ease to his long-lived mother. Harmonious and at ease in the palace—the grand ceremony is received in due season. The red brush records it—may it last as long as Heaven and Earth. Palace attendants carry the retired empress's register to the reading seat—《Sheng'an》—"Blessing is gathered at the suburban rite; the season's great peace is met." Her name is raised to sun and moon; her virtue matches Heaven and Earth that cover and bear.

The emperor presents the retired emperor's seal and treasure to the Grand Tutor, using 《Li'an》. (Same for presenting to the Retired Empress.) Banners of emerald splendor; spirit-dragon drums. They are arrayed in the broad hall, assisting our magnificent rite. Come, you dukes and tutors—make solemn your ritual bearing. Do not stray from the standard, thereby securing abundant blessing.

The seal and treasure pass out the gate—《Zheng'an》—"The azure dragon coils and writhes; the elephant carriage moves gracefully." What does it carry? The blazing golden writ. Through the Main Gate they go; they process along the Great Avenue. Thereby to glorify kin—a thing unheard of since antiquity. The seal and treasure enter De Shou Palace gate—《Zheng'an》.

Heaven alone is greatest; its virtue is sincerity. Yao alone took it as model; his nature is benevolence. Cultured and martial both—he gains long life and a noble name. For ten thousand years—thereby nothing fails to grow. The Retired Emperor ascends to the throne—《Qian'an》. (Same for descent.) Heaven's course alone is vigorous; Heaven's step alone is secure. The sage son stands at the center; officials encircle him on every side.

The people cannot put it into words; majesty never leaves his countenance. Song virtue deserves to be hymned; Han ritual forms may be set aside. The Grand Tutor brings the retired emperor's register up the hall—《Sheng'an》. (Same for presenting the treasure.) Heaven bestows far-reaching blessing, truly displaying a father's kindness. A long-neglected canon of old—I am able to raise it up. Go slowly in your ascent and descent; be reverent in your ceremony and bearing. Blessings are repeatedly granted without end—may they be forever preserved.

Greatly manifest is King Wen; his virtue is pure. Also there is Grand Si; thereby raising emblem sound. Register and treasure; jade and gold. Who follows it? One person serves his kin. Graceful and gentle; river moistens, mountain countenance.
