Crown prince imperial guard retinue. Rites statutes provided that the three preceptors, household steward, rate-making director, and chief of household each used their proper-rank imperial guard retinue to lead the way. From Taizong's Zhidaodao period through Zhenzong's elevation as heir, matters were largely marked by modest restraint; on days of temple audience only the Eastern Palace guard retinue was used, with six leading officers, but they rode in carriages and no ceremonial guard was set out. In the second year of Tianxi, when Renzong was crown prince, this regulation was likewise followed. In the third year of Zhenghe, the Rites Deliberation Bureau submitted the crown prince guard retinue regulations.

Under Song regulations, subjects had no name of guard retinue; when one was elevated as heir apparent, ritual notes were drafted provisionally. Although the Zhenghe Rites created full guard retinues, they had not yet been put into practice. After the southward relocation, although discussions were held, crown princes all declined in modesty; on days of audience at the palace temple, at accompanying sacrifice, and at regular court, they all rode horses, with only palace staff to lead them, having umbrellas and fans but no encircling guard. They used one three-tier green silk umbrella, four purple silk screen fans attending, two dispatch officers, two direct secretariat officials, four guest officers, twenty personal attendants, twenty litter officers, four Hanlin office attendants, four ceremonial office attendants, six cooks, four horse-training instructors, two seal-bearers on the back, ten infantry command effect troops, seventy-eight infantry command soldiers, and four guard-alert soldiers. Court position was above the three excellencies; escort was within the encircling guard behind the imperial carriage.

For the crown prince consort, Zhenghe also had a guard retinue, but after the southward relocation this too was reduced. When the consort went out she rode only a palanquin; one three-tier green silk umbrella, four yellow-red silk screen fans attending. Crown prince household personal attendants served as litter officers, bearing objects before them; before the palanquin one junior palace attendant held a gilded incense ball. As vanguard, horse-training soldiers shouted to clear the way.

Imperial guard retinue for princes, nobles, and below. For the grand procession six leading detachments were used, employing the proper-rank guard retinue; these were granted for presenting registers, serving as envoy, and edict burials. Princes used first-rank regulations, with two each of Halt and Announce, Transmit Edict, and Trust banners added; on burial days the inner guard of the six leading detachments was used. In the second year of Xianping, on the burial day of Wang Chengyan, music was forbidden in the palace; rites officials requested guard retinue wind-and-drum music complete but unplayed, and this was approved. In the second year of Jingde, the Southern Suburban guard retinue commissioner Wang Qinruo said: "The guard retinue given for Prince Yun's burial day mixes auspicious and inauspicious ritual gear. We ask that separate princely state carriages be made according to regulations; for wind-and-drum music and ceremonial guard we also ask additions, to supply investiture, court assembly, marriage, and burial use." This was approved. Thereupon ceremonial attire was all painted; on burial days on the road, leather carriages replaced state carriages.
