Treatise Ten: Music II

In his discussion of Han music, Cai Yong classified it into four types: music for suburban and temple spirits, music for imperial feasts, music for the great archery ceremony at the Bright Hall, and short-pipe and beat-gong songs.

Five Songs for Jin Suburban Sacrifices, by Fu Xuan
4
Heaven has given its mandate to Jin—solemn, august, and bright. Day and night we devote ourselves, reverently serving the spirits on high. We perform the rites in their proper seasons, until all is brought to completion. We offer the dark bull of sacrifice and present the evening victims. We honor virtue in our music, and the gods attend.

Our culture spreads far and wide, bringing peace to every quarter of the realm. We ever pledge to uphold it, toiling day and night without ease. We glorify Heaven's mandate and revere the Supreme Lord. With splendid music we make our offerings, and the spirits' blessing shines bright. The gods descend in grace, and blessings without end are ours.

Heaven's favor rests on Jin, whose mandate is ever renewed. Receiving the mandate from Wei, we hold sway over all the people. We feast and reach to August Heaven, cherishing and soothing the hundred spirits. The illustrious legacy of our forebears—how pure their virtue. We offer the dark bull and thus inaugurate the suburban rite. The spirits come to attend, and blessings and prosperity arrive.
9
The seasons march onward; August Heaven is our sovereign. Blessed with Jin, the myriad people uphold it. We fear Heaven's majesty and reverently teach the people the seasons. Though we cannot match their glory, still we ponder their legacy with care. The supreme pole is established, and every achievement flourishes. Day and night we strive—such is Jin's blessing.
10
Our sovereign of propagating culture is fit to match Heaven on high. He pacifies the four seas and preserves the years of peace. Ah, how bright his radiance—by it he brings peace to the people. He established musical regulations and restored ritual statutes. He set the standard for the people; all things begin from this. May his descendants flourish; forever we pledge to uphold it.

Sublime is Jin, whose virtue advances with the seasons. Receiving the mandate from Heaven, its radiance succors every state. When every state is illumined, the spirits confirm their blessing. Reverent at the suburban rite, we devoutly serve the Supreme Lord. Devoutly serving the Supreme Lord, the hundred blessings arrive. Lofty are our forebears, fit to match Heaven on high. Fine victims do not delight them—only the fragrance of virtue is feasted. Receiving Heaven's blessing, the spirits harmonize and the four quarters flourish.

Sublime is great Jin, which receives Heaven's glorious blessing. The two emperors advanced in virtue and spread this redoubled radiance. Our emperor received the mandate and holds sway over every region. At the suburban sacrifice we offer paired feasts; ritual and music are fully displayed. The spirits delight in the feast, and our ancestors we revere. May his descendants flourish; may the blessing be preserved without end.

We prepare the great altar and sacrifice to the august spirits. Essence and breath are stirred, and the hundred spirits gather as guests. We bank the vermilion fire and blaze fragrant kindling. Purple smoke drifts upward, crowning the azure clouds. The substance of the spirits has no likeness or form. Vast and boundless, dark yet pure. When the spirits come, light and radiance shine forth. Nothing is heard though we listen; no sign appears though we look. When the spirits arrive, all rejoice with gladness. The spirits' presence harmonizes and moves our hearts. When the spirits are seated, all share in joy and delight. Moistening clouds soar aloft; the transforming wind spreads abroad. Fine music is played, its cultured tones resounding. The eight sounds harmonize, and the spirits listen. All offerings are purified and arrayed, together fragrant. We cook the sacrificial beasts and offer jade goblets. The spirits are pleased and feast, delighting in the suburban sacrifice. They bless great Jin and send down abundant blessings. The sacrificial flesh reaches the capital and extends through the four seas. We preserve Heaven's years to the end of the earth's chronicle.

We arrange the great procession and await the august spirits. The multitude of spirits are stirred, and the host of numina take their places. The yin sacrifice is set forth and auspicious rites are performed. Night is nearing its depth, yet the hour has not yet shifted. The substance of the spirits has no likeness or form. Hidden in the great dark, penetrating the sudden void. When the spirits emerge, dimly as if present. The spirits are never far—they are mother to all under Heaven. When the spirits come, they leave behind light and radiance. Shining as if present, yet in the end dark and obscure. When the spirits arrive, all rejoice with gladness. We dance the image of virtue and sing the completed pattern. When the spirits are seated, all share in joy and ease. Moistening rain is bestowed and transforming clouds spread abroad. Music undergoes eight transformations, and sound and teaching spread abroad. All things equally feast, and the spirits are thus delighted. The fast having been purified, the attendants stand solemn. Jade goblets are presented; all stand solemn and grave. We feast in fine celebration, delighting in virtue's fragrance. The sacrificial flesh reaches Jin and extends to all living beings. It overflows the nine regions and reaches the celestial court. We preserve ten thousand years and extend a hundred million ages.

We founded the Bright Hall and never slackened in our feasts and sacrifices. Ah, our illustrious forefather, whose glory matches the Supreme Lord. Sublime is the Supreme Lord, lofty and exalted. Our sage forefather is matched to Him; bright virtue shines and blends. Throughout the land all reverently perform their duties, and the myriad regions come to sacrifice. We perform the rites in their proper seasons and preserve the sacrificial blessing for all time.

Three Ascending Songs for Song Southern Suburban Elegant Music, by Yan Yanzhi

We revere the august mandate and honor the imperial ancestors with solemn reverence. Our glory spans the sea and blazes on Mount Tai; our line descends from Tang and Chu. The spirits discern our deep culture; the people rally to our sagely martial virtue. We receive the broad bestowal of Heaven, dwelling at the center and expanding our domain. We span the earth as emperor and exhaust Heaven as its sovereign. From the farthest corners they come as guests; from the sun's verge they present their tribute. In the founding year, at the first month, ritual is exchanged and music is raised. Six melodies link the affairs; nine officers array in order. Pure victims stand in the washing pen; cleansed offerings rest on the stands. With the offered pig we express the king's innermost heart and answer the spirits' blessing.

Only the sage feasts the Lord; only the filial feasts his kin. Sublime! All is prepared for the spring rites on high. Ritual proceeds at the ancestral sacrifice; reverence reaches the suburban offering. Golden branches are planted at the center; broad music is arrayed on four sides. Ascending, we are matched in the capital; descending, virtue rests upon the people. Rushing essence illumines the night; high blazing fires light the dawn. Yin brightness floats and glitters; submerged offerings sink into the deep. We announce the great completion and great return; we receive blessing from the primal spirit. The moon's charioteer holds to the measure; star drivers support the wheel. From afar they rise and drive; blazing bright, vigorous and strong.

We lay out the great altar and fix Heaven's innermost purpose. Our thoughts are sagely; divination and planning accord. We erect the marker and reed-mat and establish the suburban palace. Field candles are set; torch fires connect in a chain. Passing through the year's first ten-day period, the pitch-pipe's head is auspicious. We adorn the purple altar; in the pit we array the chambers. The central stars give their sign; the six ancestors are ranked in order. Heaven's realm is tranquil; the earth's regions are still. Great filial piety shines forth; sacrificial ritual is offered. On the victim day we display them; the abundance comes from our own person. Vessels are fully arrayed; ritual bearing is prepared. Form-dances are linked; covered by song and bells. We gaze toward the Lord's gate; the spirits' procession rises high. When the spirits come, the morning light overflows. Pure grain is poured; we delight the Great Unity. Bright radiance in the night; splendid clarity in the day. The unhusked grain having begun, the offering again concludes. Smoke and fragrant libation rise; we report to the clear vault. We feast Song's virtue; the sacrificial flesh rewards the king's merit. The mandate of rest is eternal; blessings and good fortune are full.

Earth's pivot is tranquil; Heaven's hub turns. The canopy of stars moves; Purple Subtlety opens. Banners blot out the sun; chariots crowd like clouds. We drive the six breaths and mount the swirling mist. The imperial capital blazes bright; the celestial city gleams. The sage ancestor descends; the five numina gather. We construct jade steps; pearl curtains rise high. The Milky Way brushes the curtains; the moon perches on the eaves. Dance sequences are arranged; bells and stones blend in harmony. Flying radiance halts; dense winds of procession arise. We strive in grain offerings; we purify sacrificial beasts. The hundred rites are solemn; the host of officers are reverent. Imperial virtue reaches far; great filial piety flourishes. Piercing the nine dark regions; penetrating the three luminaries. When the spirits are at rest, the jade chariot-bells are unfastened. Bright blessings arrive; the myriad realms rejoice.

At Yong Terrace we distinguish the new moon; at Marsh Palace we select the auspicious day. Purified fire illumines the evening; bright water is displayed at dawn. Six hu vessels adorn the chamber; eight feathered dancers grace the court. We honor the former sages and cherish the spirits on high. Si Xia warns of reverence; the ascending song releases virtue. Forever firm the great foundation; thereby we pacify the myriad states.

Only Heaven is great; only the sage ancestor is our model. The celestial dwelling spans the myriad realms; suspended tassels reach the states below. Within, the eight assistants of the spirits; without, radiance on the four seas. The artemisia palace looks up to the canopy; the sun lodge rarely displays its banner. Double halls retain the light; layered eaves gather the wind. Planed pillars join the weft; reaching far, they bear the rainbow. We set up the stands and spaces in the royal court. We begin the suburban sacrifice, able to match the spirits. I will offer, I will feast—in the first month of spring. With filial piety and reverence, thereby we establish our multitude of people.

Treading Establishment, dwelling at the center of the realm; governing the cord, ruling the four quarters. Regulating transformation through cold and warmth; spreading governance through the cycle of heat and cool. When the light is beautiful, branches can be tied; when frost is clear, ice can be broken. The joyous wind fans the vermilion season; white clouds flow through the white season. At equinox and solstice we mount the knotted gnomon; at opening and closing we gather the constant measures. The imperial fortune gathers the myriad beings; the royal spirit clarifies the state's pace.

The hundred streams are like mirrors; Heaven and Earth are clear and bright. Clouds surge and breath rises; virtue flourishes in white essence. Tree leaves first fall; Dongting Lake first raises its waves. Night light penetrates the earth; turning frost illumines the Milky Way. The myriad kinds harvest their yield; the year's work approaches completion and rest. Moistening the earth with rich blessing; the whole realm receives the autumn spirit.

The year and months having grown late, the chariot is about to speed. The spirit mounts Kan; its virtue governs the compass. The dark spirit joins in obscurity along the bird's path. White clouds densely span the horizon. Thunder is in the earth; the season is not yet bright. We order the state's statutes and close the passes and bridges. The four seasons pervade; the myriad things withdraw. Blessing to the nine domains; fortune to the eight directions. Morning shadows are brief; evening clepsydra drips are long. Great yin reaches its extreme; slight yang is proclaimed. Magpies are about to nest; ice has already melted. Breath moistens the waters; wind stirs the springs.

Gathering ritual bearing; remaining music passes through. The spirits are about to remain; the light is about to set. Opening the ninefold gates; solemn at the five thoroughfares. Phoenixes unevenly arrayed; dragons already at rest. Clouds having moved; the river already bridged. Ten thousand li illumined; the four voids fragrant. The spirits' chariot returns to the Pure Capital. The turning court is silent; the jade hall is empty. Sagely transformation congeals; filial winds blaze. Turning to the spirits' hearts; binding the imperial thought.

When Han first established the state, it rectified the nine provinces. The southern barbarians were awed into submission; weapons and armor were laid aside. In peace we do not forget preparedness; martial music is cultivated. We feast our guests and officers; reverently we employ them to govern Heaven; eternal joy without care. Descendants receive the hundred blessings; they constantly roam with the immortals Song and Qiao. The common people's virtue—none fail to rejoice in gentleness.

Jin Proclaiming Martial Dance Songs, four pieces, by Fu Xuan
60
Only the Sage Emperor Chapter; Spear Yu, first
61
Only the sage emperor's virtue, lofty and bright, illumines the four seas. Ritual and music are like form and shadow; civil and martial are inner and outer; thus the Ba Yu was made. The dancers perform; swords and crossbows are arrayed together; spears and halberds begin it. Advancing and retreating swift as hawk and harrier; dragon battle and leopard rising. Like chaos yet not chaotic; movements follow their principle; parting and joining have order and rule.
62
Short Weapons Chapter; Sword Yu, second
63
The sword is a short weapon; its momentum is perilous and dangerous. Swift beyond flying lightning; turning and wheeling according to rule. Martial measure in unified sound; now joining, now parting. Lightning bursts, stars gallop; like light, like shadow. Military law is thereby imaged; army bearing is thereby patterned.
64
Army Anchor Chapter; Crossbow Yu, third
65
The crossbow is a distant weapon, the army's anchor; its release has mechanism. Its body is hard to move yet when going it must be swift; heavy yet not slow. Sharp essence divides the shafts; shooting far, hitting the minute. The music of Crossbow Yu—how singularly marvelous! Transformations many in posture; retreating like a torrent, advancing like flight. The five sounds harmonize; the eight tones accord. Proclaiming martial image; praising Heaven's majesty.
66
Exhausting Martial Chapter; Peaceful Platform Marching Disorder, fourth
67
Those who exhaust martial prowess perish—how much more mere defeat. Softness and weakness abolish warfare; the state is also ruined. Qin Shihuang and Xu of Yan—already they made warnings for former ages. Former kings discerned their mechanism; they cultivated culture and ordered martial arts. Civil and martial fully complement each other; only then can glory be enlarged. Envoi: High then overreaching; full then overflowing. What rises too high courts danger; what fills too full must topple. Cast off danger and collapse; hold to the level mean. Through emptiness comes endurance; from turbidity comes clarity. Mingling civil and martial arts, following Heaven's enduring way.

The "Feather Flute Dance Song."
70
In the days of the August Sovereign, Heaven and Earth first opened the primal age. With nets and snares for birds and beasts, the common people lived secure. Shennong taught the plow; to found the realm was truly arduous. The people had grain to eat and lived at ease, free of every care. The Yellow Emperor first took up arms; the myriad beings trace their origins to him. His war chariots had no fixed abode—hence the name Xuanyuan. When Xuanyuan rested from toil, even Yao and Shun knew no careless ease. Yu of Xia tamed the floods; Tang and Wu again took up the sword. Who could guard peace and leisure and, sitting still, bring the age to Great Peace? The sage emperor strode ever forward; praise rose throughout the realm, solemn and radiant. Only the sage emperor—his transforming Way shines forth. He clarifies the four seas and purifies sun, moon, and stars. Ten thousand matters are governed; the people's business thrives. The hidden dragon rises; the ritual phoenix takes flight. Wind and rain arrive in season; all creatures flourish. War horses are sent away; auspicious signs descend. He elevates the humble and obscure and chooses the loyal and good. He bears every blessing; long life without end.

The "Feather Bell Dance Song."
72
Long ago, in the age of undivided wholeness, yin and yang had not yet parted. Yang ascended and shed clear light; yin descended and raised drifting clouds. Perfect balance held the misty breath; the myriad beings each took their own kind. Human bonds found their proper order; all living things rejoiced in the sage ruler. The three dynastic cycles succeeded the five phases; only then came form and ornament. Sovereigns rose and fell in changing ages; rule and ruin alike were manifold. Behold great Jin—its virtue matches the ancients. It surpasses Fuxi and Shennong and stands far above Shun and Yu. It ranks with Heaven and Earth and towers above the Three Sovereigns and Five Emperors. Its rites follow Tang and Zhou; its music is that of "Shao" and "Wu." Not only the "Xiao Shao"—music of all six ages is performed. Its grace drenches the land; its transforming power fills Heaven's vault. The sage emperor holds court; great ministers assist him; all under Heaven rejoice as one. The primal breath rolls on in boundless waves—how vast the great purity! The five phases advance; sun and moon take turns in their courses. All things change with the seasons and thereby come into being. The sage emperor succeeds Heaven; his radiance succors every creature. He transforms the realm through the Way; ten thousand kingdoms are at peace. Receiving this great blessing, it endures for a hundred million years.

He swept and settled the four seas and first established the numinous capital. He restored rites and gathered music; war horses were scattered, walls dismantled. His moisture fills the nine possessions; his transforming power floats the eight seas. Auspicious clouds support his sleeve; sweet dew flies upon the eaves.
