The qilin is a beast of benevolence. The male is called qi and the female lin. It appears when no fetus is cut from the womb and no egg is broken open. Its body is like a muntjac, its tail like an ox, its neck like a wolf, with a single horn, yellow in hue and hooves like a horse. It carries benevolence within and righteousness upon its brow; its cry accords with the bell and pitch pipes, its steps with compass and rule. It will not tread on living insects, break living plants, eat what is unjust, drink from foul waters, enter pits or traps, or pass through snares. It appears when an enlightened sovereign conducts himself with due ceremony in motion and repose. When the male calls, the name is "Departing Sage"; when the female calls, "Returning Harmony"; in spring, "Supporting the Young"; in summer, "Nurturing Tranquility."

The phoenix is a bird of benevolence. It appears when no fetus is cut from the womb and no egg is broken open. Now it flies, now it perches. The male is called feng and the female huang. Its head is like a serpent, its jaw like a swallow, its back like a tortoise, its belly like a turtle, its neck like a crane, its beak like a cock, its breast like a swan, its tail like a fish, its head green and its wings paired; it stands like an egret yet bears the grace of a mandarin duck. Virtue crowns its head, benevolence rests upon its back, righteousness loads its neck, trustworthiness fills its breast, its feet walk in rectitude and its tail is tied to martial virtue. Its soft notes accord with the bell, its full notes with the drum. Stretching its neck and beating its wings, it displays all five colors. It raises the eight winds and brings timely rain; it eats with restraint and drinks with ceremony; its departure has ornament, its arrival brings blessing; it roams only where the ground is fit and never drinks heedlessly. In its call the male cries “jie-jie” and the female “zu-zu.” At dawn it cries "Bringing Forth Light"; by day, "Ascending the New"; at evening, "Returning Splendor"; at dusk, "Securing Constancy"; at night, "Guarding Growth." In its song it wheels and turns, rich and resonant. Only the phoenix can comprehend the myriad creatures, receive Heaven's blessings, embody the hundred forms, attain the kingly Way, govern the five tones, fulfill the nine virtues, unite civil and martial excellence, and set the lesser realms in order. Hence when the phoenix's image is attained: the first time it passes by; the second it soars; the third it alights; the fourth it stays through spring and autumn; the fifth it remains for life.

In the second month of the third year of Yan'guang, Emperor An of Han, the emperor traveled east on inspection. That month on the wuzi day, a phoenix alighted on a tree at the home of Assistant Magistrate Huo Shou of Tai County in Jinan. Magistrate Ni received fifteen bolts of silk, Shou twenty bolts, the commandant half as much, and clerks and soldiers three bolts each; in every district and post station the phoenix had passed, the year's field tax was remitted; and common men were raised two degrees in noble rank.

On the bingshen day of the third month in the fourteenth year of Yuanjia, two great birds alighted on a plum tree in the garden of Wang Yan, a resident of Moling. They were the size of peacocks, with head and legs somewhat raised, brilliant feathers in five colors, and harmonious cries; birds like pheasants followed them; after some thirty paces they flew away toward the southeast. Yikang, Prince of Pengcheng and inspector of Yang Province, reported the event. The lane where the birds had settled, Yongchang Lane, was renamed Phoenix Lane.

On the gengshen day of the first month in the first year of Xiaojian, a phoenix appeared at Xiexian Pavilion in Dantu, led by a pair of swans with many birds in attendance. Hun, Prince of Wuchang and General Who Conquers the Barbarians, reported it.

The divine bird is the essence of the Red Spirit; it discerns whether tones are clear or dull and whether they are in harmony. Though red, it displays all five colors; its body is like a cock; its call accords with the five tones, solemn and harmonious. When joyful it sings and dances; it loves hidden retreats. It appears when popular customs accord with the Way.

The yellow dragon is chief among the four dragons. When pools are not drained for fishing and virtue penetrates to the deepest springs, the yellow dragon swims in the waters. It can rise high or sink low, grow fine or great, hide in shadow or vanish into darkness, shorten or lengthen, appear and disappear in an instant.

The red dragon and the River Chart are earthly portents. When a sovereign's virtue reaches the deepest springs, the river brings forth the dragon chart.

The numinous tortoise is a sacred turtle. When a sovereign's virtue is pure and deep as still water, and hunting and fishing in hills and streams observe the seasons, it appears. Its five colors shine clear; at three hundred years it glides upon lotus leaves, at three thousand it dwells upon cocklebur leaves. It knows what lives and what perishes and discerns good and ill fortune. When Yu dwelt in lowly halls, the numinous tortoise appeared.

Under the jade lay a great stone containing a turtle more than two chi long; contemporaries regarded it as an omen of restoration.
