39
: 西
I have heard that to dwell on high and heed what lies below is the work of the Supreme Lord; and what Heaven does not oppose is the virtue of a sage king. By such virtue one may sway the two cosmic forces and shape the myriad things of creation. Surveying past and present and testing the charts and weft-texts, never has the Way been wanting and transformation been impaired while auspicious things still shone forth in plain sight. Since the imperial mandate passed into your house and the stars have moved in harmony, plants and trees have shown their numinous power and mountains and streams have offered up their treasures. I humbly consider that Your Majesty embodies the power of Qian and holds the supreme pole of rule, while blessed tokens have arrived one after another. Whether it is the phoenix showing its bearing in the western suburbs, the dragon appearing in the eastern capital, sea lords presenting feathers turned from black, or the river god revealing the source that waits to be made clear— not even the symbolic virtue of the Three Dynasties could surpass this. What lies hidden is surely brought to light; nothing remote lies beyond your reach; envoys through many tongues come year after year, and blessed omens arrive month by month. When Your Majesty lately plowed the southern fields in person, excellent grain grew there again; the response of the spirits is nowhere more abundant than in this. The four seas are at peace, the five peoples rejoice in their work, and you turned your thoughts to the example of Fenyang and began the numinous park. The Orchid Grove had scarcely been planted when sweet dew flowed again and again; the rammed-earth works were barely finished when auspicious grain heaped up like a mound. The signs of great peace are manifest here. I, established in few accomplishments, have taken on the weary burden of the Grand Commandant's staff; bathed in your fragrant grace, I have witnessed these hidden blessings and cannot contain my joy. I respectfully submit one hymn in praise of excellent grain and sweet dew, though it is insufficient to proclaim your splendid virtue, and I do so with fearful reverence. The hymn reads:
40
:
The two cosmic images were divided, and the three numina rejoiced in their lord. Heaven's responses joined in accord; today is still as in antiquity. Whom does Heaven favor? Only the humane does it sustain. Imperial achievements and dynastic deeds rise above all within the realm. The four peoples reach their fulfillment, and our sovereign embodies this. Perceptive and numinous, reverently displaying cultured thought. The nine kindreds are at peace, and the myriad states are truly well governed. Virtue is arrayed by rank, and the Way brings harmonious splendor. Solemn and unceasing is the illustrious and faithful heir apparent in the east. Knowing from birth, sagely wise from of old; lofty as a peak, deep as an abyss. Following the heart makes one wise, and his fine renown spreads far and wide. He continues the emblem of King Wu below, matching the splendor of the celestial dwelling. The Yellow Emperor built the Hall of Union; Han rose with the Palace of Everlasting Joy. How much more so in this sacred court, where the nine realms are already at peace. Following the old statutes, your thought illuminates the ways of former kings. Then you raised Lingxiao and went on to build Jingyang. Luxuriant stands Jingyang on the border between Heaven and the deep. The Clear-Summer Hall rises cool and bright; the Cloud Hall towers apart. Planted things are nurtured here, and living things find rest. One gazes to the limit upon the river's waves and faces on every side peaks that stand like mountains. Transforming virtue alone extends far, and blessed omens alone flourish abundantly. Excellent seed descends from above, and auspicious signs appear at the first building. Sweet dew gathers in spring, and auspicious grain ripens in autumn. It holds moisture without harshness, and the years that follow remain rich. Long ago under Emperor Yao, the calendar-pod appeared through several reigns. It came down to Emperor Shun, who leaned on his fan in the clear kitchen. Brilliant is the imperial felicity; among such things, each vies to shine forth. It matches those records in the classics and spreads these songs on the wind. Your subject suffers the six obscurations and bears duties in two offices. I am ashamed before Zhong Kui and abashed before Zheng Zi as well. How could I forget the reclusion of Heng and Bi? I rejoice in the Way in this enlightened age. I dare recount these blessed felicitations, ashamed that fine words fail me.

Shen Yanzhi, Central Palace Guard General and Marquis of Jiyang County, submitted a hymn in praise of excellent grain that read: "Radiant and brilliant is the auspicious chart; clear and bright is the blessed omen. The cycle turns and the gate is shut; the season of prosperity first appears. The brocade pattern is already displayed, and bird script is then made plain. Oh, the august sacred sovereign, who receives all things and records what lies far off. The two bright ones adorn the stars, and flourishing splendor spreads through Heaven. 〈One〉 His principle is subtle and his position exalted; serving the spirits, his achievement flourishes. Deep and rich is his virtuous grace; empty and still is his governance by the Way. He harmonizes transformation and settles hearts; he adjusts music and shifts natures. The Jade Balance follows his person, and the Luminous Radiance holds true alignment. The great star lowers its radiance, and the auspicious cloud establishes celebration. 〈Two〉 Where utmost benevolence reaches, no hidden corner is left unrestored. What utmost harmony touches, no condition fails to shine forth. The yuan-bird emerges from the cinnabar cave, and the parrot rises in western Xiang. The white deer crosses the sea, and the plain bird crosses the river. Sound gathers in the vault of yin, and form is patterned in the bell of yang. 〈Three〉 Governing the people and serving Heaven, he is diligent and attains his aim. With black plow and starting carriage, the high granaries are already filled. Excellent grain bears double ears, and sweet dew flows in streams. Splendor rises in the morning plots, and grain displays itself at the corner of the marsh. Separate ears join in one awn, and glory spreads shade across the expanse. 〈Four〉 Filling boxes marks the age of Yin, and threading mulberry marks the age of Zhou. Now in our great Song, numinous gifts abound without end. The Emperor to the end holds back and is modest, unraveling thought without rest. In person he offers to the ancestral temples, warm and reverent, following the established way. Blessings descend through sincerity, and filial offerings are reverent sacrifices. 〈Five〉 He extends merit to the lowest ranks and promotes achievement, ascending to brilliant sagely edicts. His grace reaches hidden and manifest alike, and rewards extend to the remotest frontiers. The rivers are clear and the seas are calm; mountains flower and peaks blaze with splendor. Distant tribes bring tribute from afar, and combined grace is entrusted in loyal service. Lands beyond the sun's reach change their dress and request instruction. 〈Six〉 Abundant response to a flourishing age; he pacifies the myriad realms, again and again in plenty. Peacefully returning to simplicity, orderly great unity prevails. Above, he stores it in function; below, all know what to follow. Looking up, he models the king's measure; bending down, he sings the southern winds. A great name is proclaimed foremost, to be preserved forever without end." 〈Seven〉

He Chengtian, Director of the Crown Prince's Household Administration, submitted a memorial that read:
289
:
Respectfully examining the ancient canons and verifying against earlier chronicles, I find that where royal virtue spreads abroad, things respond by manifesting themselves. Thus the phoenix of Xuanhu proclaimed the glorious achievement of the Yellow Emperor, and the sparrow at the Feng altar betokened the blessed fortune of King Wen of Zhou. I humbly consider that Your Majesty has renewed the imperial radiance and inherited the throne, ever mindful of ancestral martial achievement, spreading grace and harmony through the realm and shining imperial brilliance across the heavens. By this the nine domains are united in heart, the myriad states embrace your benevolence, the spirit of Heaven sends down blessings, the spirit of Earth offers its bounty, auspicious treasures arrive in abundance, and brilliant omens all appear. In the first third of the seventh month past, at dawn, golden light filled the universe and all was bright; a gentle wind matched the pitch pipes, and sweet dew fell upon the land. Though the vermilion glory was marvelous at the celestial pivot, and glorious spirits were inscribed upon the river's chronicle, none could exceed what we now behold. I do not weigh my lowly ignorance, but secretly admire the ancients who struck the earth in song, beating their pestles together to make hymns. Recently I once more beheld the white dove; my eyes took joy in its wondrous form, and my heart rejoiced in the grandeur of this sign. I respectfully submit an encomium in one piece. My rustic thoughts are crude and antiquated, my meaning barely rises above the commonplace; they are insufficient to unfold pure brilliance or proclaim the hidden truth. Looking to those before and after me, each has followed his own intent. I respectfully take the liberty of reporting this to Your Majesty. The hymn to the white dove reads:
290
:
The three cosmic poles share one sentiment; the five numina unite in their essence. Principle responds in hidden correspondence; the Way truly manifests as the sacred sage. Glorious is the sovereign, who illumines Heaven and fulfills the Mandate. Morning light climbs the sky's steps, and the eight directions reflect as one. Blessed omens arrive in succession, and glory and joy spread abroad. The cosmos blazes with light; sun and moon pour forth their brilliance. From Pottery Mountain and the refined marshes springs soft excellence. The turning dragon reveals pure essence; separate ears share one stem. Fluttering is the dove, its radiance bright and clear. It arranges its wings on the terrace crest and spreads its brightness through the Imperial Domain. Without benevolence none congregate; without virtue none return. At dusk it follows the ceremonial phoenix, roosting in the pavilion beneath the inner gate's shelter.
291
:
How abundant is the wise sovereign, rising at dawn and striving earnestly. Only his virtue stands lofty, as steep as mountains. Only his grace is bountiful, as moist as deep pools. Rites and music reach the four quarters, and songs of praise resound afar. Lands at the ends of the earth bring tribute; interpreters through nine tongues convey their words. Long ago Old Tang cherished meeting blessed fortune. My remaining years have reached their season, yet life is in its evening. With heart uplifted in my old age, I chant the king's governance. Morning I bathe in the eternal wind; evening I rinse with sweet dew. I long for joy at the Spirit Terrace—not far off, with enduring foundation.
292
In the ninth month of the twenty-fourth year of Yuanjia, a white dove appeared again. On the gengxu day, Shen Yanzhi, Central Palace Guard General, submitted a memorial, saying:
293
: 輿
I have heard that the beauty of constancy and bounty belongs to flourishing kings, and that auspicious omens never fail to attend a wise sovereign. Hence the singing phoenix displayed the rule of effortless governance, and the soaring wren marked the benevolence of releasing the net. Your Majesty's virtue and the Way carry on the foundation, and sagely clarity continues the age; instruction clears the bird calendar, governance flourishes among the cloud offices, rites spread like a river, and grace saturates the vermilion frontier. Heaven approves clear virtue, the people rejoice in the scented wind, the stars blaze bright by this, and sun and moon shed glory by this. Divine charts and sacred omens fill the palace halls, and white body with black markings fill the spirit park. Tokens of responsive sympathy have all arrived, yet the omen born of inner sincerity has not yet been fulfilled. The plain dove came from afar, its colored wings returning in flight; its nature is refined and virtuous, its plumage bright and lovely. Having heard the earlier accounts and now personally witnessing this blessed omen, I cannot contain my literary joy and submit an encomium in one piece. My words do not consult the classics, and my text lacks ornament; I am ashamed that it is not enough to model imperial celebration or exalt splendid beauty. I simply follow what the people chant and place it at the end of the chapter. The hymn reads:
294
: 姿 西
Wise is its bearing—the white dove of the age. Its nature harmonizes with the five teachings, and its name is enrolled at the Plain Mound. The Yin calendar is flourishing, and gracefully it comes to roam. The Han records were splendid; then it descended, then it rested. 〈One〉 Oh, glorious Song; wise blessing spreads far. The sacred sovereign reigns above, and the Way illumines the vast carriage. His bestowals are already even, and filial thought is ever spoken. People harmonize on earth, and spirits rejoice in Heaven. 〈Two〉 Rites and music are well ordered, and numinous things all manifest. White sparrows gather on buds, and red phoenixes roost in the suburbs. Patterned zebras tread in pairs, and excellent grain heads rise from seedlings. Bright white-striped wings follow transformation and tame the court. 〈Three〉 Must it go to the woods? Surely it is Zhou's catalpa. Must it return to righteousness? Surely it is Shang's place. Only virtue is relied upon; only benevolence is dwelt in. Nourished at Mount Jingyang, it washes its form in the imperial domain. 〈Four〉 Penal codes and calendars are promulgated, and principle and sympathy alternate in correspondence. Pheasants fly beyond the norm, and egrets rise in Western Yong. They arrive in multitude and settle, truly combining this bearing. Unifying this people's hearing, solemn is the king's wind. 〈Five〉
