In the eastern quarter of the twenty-eight lodges, Horn's two stars form the Celestial Gate-tower—the Heavenly Gate lies between them, and the Celestial Court within. The ecliptic runs through them, marking the course of the seven luminaries. The left Horn is the Celestial Field and seat of justice, governing punishment; the Solar Path lies to its south. The right Horn is the General, governing warfare; the Lunar Path lies to its north. They are Heaven's three gates, as Chamber has its four outer markers. When these stars shine bright and large, the royal Way is tranquil and the worthy serve at court. When they quiver and move, the sovereign takes the field.
2
Neck's four stars form the Son of Heaven's inner court. It receives memorials from the realm, hears lawsuits, judges cases, and records achievements. Also called the Dispersal Temple, it governs epidemic disease. Bright, large stars mean loyal ministers, a peaceful realm, and freedom from plague. Movement foretells widespread disease.
3
宿
Root's four stars are the king's lodging, the consorts' quarters, and the chamber of repose. The front pair represents the principal wife; the rear pair, concubines. When forced labor is at hand, Root stirs first. Bright, large stars mean ministers uphold the law and the people are not overworked.
4
Chamber's four stars form the Bright Hall, where the Son of Heaven governs, and also represent the Four Assistants. The lowest star is the Chief General; the next is the Second General; the next is the Second Chancellor; the uppermost star is the Chief Chancellor. The southern pair marks the sovereign's place; the northern pair, the consort's. They also form the four outer markers; between them runs the Celestial Crossroads—the Celestial Gate-tower where the ecliptic passes. The southern interval is the Solar Ring; beyond it lies Great Yang. The northern interval is the Lunar Gap; beyond it lies Great Yin. If the seven luminaries pass through the Celestial Crossroads, the realm enjoys peace. The solar path brings drought and mourning; the lunar path, flood and war. Also called the Celestial Team of Four and the Heavenly Horses, it governs the imperial chariot. From south to north: Left Outrigger, Left Shaft-horse, Right Shaft-horse, Right Outrigger. Also the Celestial Stable, it governs gates and stores—the source of livestock reserves. Bright Chamber stars mean an enlightened sovereign. Large outrigger stars herald war; scattered stars, mass migration. Two small stars north of Chamber are Hook and Lock—Chamber's bolt, Heaven's valve, governing sealed stores and locking the Heart of Heaven. Filial kings make Hook and Lock shine bright. Near Chamber, the realm stands united; far from it, the realm splits and the royal line fails. Stars between Chamber and Hook and Lock, or their scattering, mean earthquakes and rivers turning clear.
5
Heart's three stars mark the Celestial King's rightful throne. The central star is the Bright Hall—the Son of Heaven's throne and Great Mark, governing reward and punishment throughout the realm. When the realm shifts, Heart stars reveal omens. Bright, large stars mean unity; dim stars, a darkened sovereign. The front star is the Heir Apparent; if dim, he cannot inherit. The rear star is a secondary son; if bright, he will take the throne. Black Heart stars bring sorrow to great men. Straight alignment means the king loses power; movement, urgent crisis; quivering horns, war; scattering, mass flight.
6
Tail's nine stars form the rear palace precinct and the consorts' quarters. The first star is the empress; the next three are noble ladies; the rest are concubines. Beside the third star lies the Spirit Palace, the inner chamber of disrobing. Tail also images the nine sons. Even brightness and orderly succession among the stars mean an ordered rear palace and many heirs. Faint, fine, dim stars bring the empress illness and worry. The Celestial River rises east, passing Tail and Winnowing Basket—the River Ford. It divides south through Fu Yue, Fish, and River Drum, and north through Tortoise and Southern Dipper, joining at Heavenly Ford. Then southwest through Gourd, Five Chariots, Eastern Well, and Seven Stars, where it sets. The Hong Fan Wuxing Commentary says: "Clear and bright is Heaven's body; sudden color change alters the constant. Heaven splits means insufficient yang—strong ministers, split realm, suffering lords. Heaven opening to light brings torrents of blood. Heaven splitting with visible people means war and national ruin. Heaven's sound means the Supreme One grieves and startles. All arise from a disordered state."
58
In Han Hui's second year, Heaven opened northeast—thirty-plus zhang long. Afterward came the Lü clan rebellion.
59
西
In Jin Hui's Tai'an second year, Heaven split at center. Mu Di's Shengping fifth year: another split, several zhang wide, with thunder. Afterward all brought warfare. The sun follows the ecliptic eastward one degree per day, circling in 365+ days. Eastern travel is spring; southern, summer; western, autumn; northern, winter. Its travel sets the nodes of yin-yang and seasons. The Commentary says: "The sun is Great Yang's essence, the image of the human lord. When the ruler has flaws, his wickedness is exposed as warning. Sun and moon in a righteous state shine bright—the lord prospers and people are at peace. Sun color change destroys armies—or mourns lords without armies. A virtueless lord and disorderly ministers make the sun red and dim. A discolored sun means the state it faces fails. Midday dim sun with no shadows means harsh punishments and great flood within a year. Daytime dim sun with flocking crows means lost government. A crow in the sun means a darkened lord, chaotic rule, and white-clad assembly. Black spots, qi, or clouds in the sun mean ministers depose their lord. Solar eclipse: yin invades yang—fallen states, dead lords, or great floods. Stars visible during eclipse mean a killed lord and a split realm. Kings cultivate virtue to avert it.
60
退
The moon is yin's essence. Round and clear, it shows brightness when sunlight strikes it. Where sunlight does not reach is the dark portion. At full moon, sun and moon face each other; people between see a round disk. At quarter moons, sunlight strikes the side—half bright, half dark. At new and full moon, sunlight strikes the face and the moon is not seen. Its motion has slow and fast phases. At slowest the sun moves twelve+ degrees daily; at fastest, fourteen and a half. Slow turns fast, fast turns slow—a full cycle in twenty-seven and a half days. The moon's path slants across the ecliptic. Thirteen+ days north of the ecliptic, then thirteen+ south. Maximum deviation from the ecliptic is six degrees. Twenty-seven+ days complete one yin-yang cycle. Zhang Heng: "Opposite the sun lies the dark void where sunlight does not reach. Dark void meeting moon causes eclipse; meeting a star, the star vanishes. Modern calendars place full moon on the ecliptic—meeting the dark void. Dark void depth varies—so eclipses differ in depth and direction. The moon is Great Yin's essence, paired with the sun—the queen's image. In virtue it represents punishment. At court it images feudal lords and great ministers. An enlightened lord keeps the moon on course; powerful ministers make it stray. Ministerial power and unjust punishment make the moon shift south and north. Queen consort and kin usurping power make it advance or retreat. Moon color change foretells calamity. Day-bright moon brings wickedness, ministerial rivalry, queen's misconduct, border strength, central famine, and usurpation. Repeated monthly appearances mean chaos and ruin.

Also: fast restless emergence governs barbarians. Also: barbarian stars govern criminal law. Yellow small color: great earthquake.
66
Five planets differ in color and size, each following its nature and season. Color change has categories. Green like left shoulder; red like Heart; yellow like right shoulder; white like Wolf; black like Strider. Keeping native color through four seasons is auspicious; color harming its nature is inauspicious.
67
Lodging states gain: Year by virtue, Fire by ritual, Fill by fortune, White by armies, Chronogram by harmony. Color with horns at lodging wins; harmed color loses. Dwelling in fullness: virtue. Dwelling in emptiness: no virtue. Color beats position, motion beats color, full conquest wins all. Encampment is Pure Temple—Year Star's temple. Heart is Bright Hall—Sparkling Fire's temple. Southern Dipper is Literary Grand Chamber—Fill Star's temple. Neck is Dispersal Temple—Great White's temple. Seven Stars is Round Office—Chronogram Star's temple. At their temples, carefully await the five planets' commands.
68
When five planets expand, contract, or lose position, their essences descend as humans. Year Star descending becomes a noble minister; Sparkling Fire descending becomes singing children; Fill Star descending becomes old men and women; Great White descending becomes strong men in forests; Chronogram Star descending becomes women. Fortune and misfortune follow their announced images.
69

Five planets enter or leave the ecliptic like moon yin-yang. Five constants' entry and exit cannot be calculated. Eastward is direct and fast; westward retrograde and slow—averaged as eastward. Neither east nor west: stationary. Near sun and unseen: hidden. Hidden at sun's degree: conjunction. Stationary, direct, retrograde, hidden, combined motion shows government and five affairs' gain and loss.
79
西 西
Wood, fire, earth travel slow, crossing heaven at midnight. At conjunction then direct, gradually slower, seen at eastern dawn. Farther from sun, stationary near mid-morning. Past dawn mid-heaven: retrograde. Retrograde to evening mid-heaven: again stationary. Stationary then direct, slow to fast, evening hide west, sun conjunction. Metal and water travel fast without crossing heaven. After conjunction, fast ahead of sun, seen western dusk. Evening southward: gradually slow, then stationary. Stationary near sun: retrograde conjunction behind sun. Seen eastern dawn. Retrograde extreme: stationary, then slow. Slow extreme then fast chase, dawn hide east, sun conjunction. This is the great principle of five planets' combined, slow, retrograde, and stationary motion. Dusk and dawn divide yin and yang. South is Great Yang's position and the meridian. Seven luminaries at yang meridian wane, slant, stay, retrograde. This is Heaven's constant Way. Three cross heaven; two do not—three heavens, two earths.

Han observers learned all five planets retrograde; later transmitters rarely discerned it. Late Northern Wei: Zhang Zixin of Qinghe, master of calendrical reckoning. Hiding on an island thirty years with an armillary sphere, Zhang Zixin grasped eclipse paths and planetary appearance. Sun travel is slow after spring equinox, fast after autumn equinox. Moon inside sun's path at conjunction: eclipse; outside: no loss though crossing. Full moon at crossing always eclipses, inner or outer. Moon facing four planets is fast; backing them, slow. Five planets in lodges each favor and hate certain places. Favored lodges: long stationary, slow travel, early appearance. Hated lodges: short stationary, fast travel, late appearance. Differences from constants: up to five or thirty degrees. Chronogram Star's appearance and hiding are especially anomalous. Expected dawn and dusk appearances often not seen. Within four seasonal nodes, planets within certain solar degrees appear or not. Zhang Zhouxuan, Liu Xiaosun, and Liu Chao fixed eclipses and planetary motion—unmatched by ancients.
