In antiquity the Son of Heaven and the feudal lords all kept state histories to record words and deeds; in later ages affairs multiplied, and the practice grew ever more elaborate. From the Xia and Yin dynasties upward, the left scribe recorded speech and the right scribe recorded events. Under Zhou the Grand Scribe, Junior Scribe, Internal Scribe, External Scribe, and Imperial Censor divided these duties among themselves, and the states of the feudal lords likewise appointed historiographers. The Discourses of the States and the Spring and Autumn cite the chronicles of Zhou and the documents of Zheng; tracing the events, it seems that record-keeping at the time was assigned to separate offices, and that these were later combined and compiled into comprehensive historical writings. Afterward the realm declined into disorder and the historiographers were abolished; Qin destroyed the institutions of the former kings, and no trace of the old system remained. It was not until the reign of Emperor Wu of Han that the office of Grand Historian was first established and Sima Tan was appointed to it to oversee its duties. At that time all provincial reports from throughout the realm were first sent to the Grand Historian and a copy to the Chancellor; surviving texts and ancient events—none failed to reach them. Tan then drew upon the Mr. Zuo, the Discourses of the States, the Genealogical Records, the Intrigues of the Warring States, and the Annals of Chu and Han, continuing the narrative from where they left off to form a school of history in his own right. When Tan died, his son Qian also became Grand Historian and carried on his father's design. Beginning with the Yellow Emperor and ending with the Han dynasty, it comprised twelve basic annals, ten tables, eight treatises, thirty hereditary houses, and seventy arrayed biographies—this work was called the Records of the Grand Historian. After Qian's death, enthusiasts also wrote histories in considerable number, but most were shallow and unworthy to succeed him. In Later Han, Ban Biao of Fufeng appended several dozen chapters of continuation and also criticized errors in the earlier work. When Biao died, Emperor Ming ordered his son Gu to continue and complete his father's intent. He held that the eras of Tang, Yu, and the Three Dynasties each had their own canonical records, whereas what Sima Qian recorded placed the Han dynasty after the hundred kings—this was not the proper principle. Therefore he began with Emperor Gaozu and ended with the execution of Emperor Ping and Wang Mang, producing twelve annals, eight tables, ten treatises, and sixty-nine biographies. He devoted himself to the work with concentrated thought for more than twenty years. In the early Jianchu era he first submitted his memorial together with the annals and biographies, but the ten treatises were never completed. After Gu's death, the court at last ordered Madame Cao to continue and complete the work. Earlier, Emperor Ming had summoned Gu to serve as Clerk of the Orchid Terrace; together with senior scholars Chen Zong, Yin Min, Meng Ji, and others, they completed the Basic Annals of Emperor Guangwu. Gu was promoted to Gentleman and put in charge of collating the secret archives. Gu compiled events of Later Han and produced twenty-eight chapters of Biographical Records and Annals. Thereafter Liu Zhen, Liu Yi, Liu Tao, Fu Wuji, and others wrote in succession at the Eastern Pavilion; their work was called the Records of Han. When the Three Kingdoms stood in tripartite rivalry, Wei as well as Wu each had historiographers. In Jin times, Chen Shou of Ba commandery edited and compiled the affairs of the Three Kingdoms: only the Wei emperor received annals, while meritorious ministers and the rulers of Wu and Shu were all given biographies; still arranged by state and category, the work was called the Records of the Three Kingdoms. From this time onward there were authors of historical works everywhere, all taking Ban Gu and Sima Qian as models and treating their works as standard histories; authors became especially numerous. Histories of a single dynasty numbered as many as several dozen schools. Only the Records of the Grand Historian and the Book of Han were handed down from master to pupil, and both had explanatory commentaries. The Records of the Three Kingdoms and Fan Ye's Book of Later Han, though they have pronunciation guides and commentaries, are recent works and can be understood upon reading. In Liang times those who mastered the Book of Han included Liu Xian and Wei Leng; in Chen times there was Yao Cha; in Sui times there were Bao Kai and Xiao Gai—all were renowned masters. Transmitters of the Records of the Grand Historian were very few. Now, arranged by period, they are gathered and compiled to supplement the standard histories.

Since the historiographers were abolished, successive authors all took Ban Gu and Sima Qian as their standard. Beginning with Emperor Xian of Han, who greatly loved the classics, finding Ban Gu's Book of Han too verbose and hard to abridge, he ordered Xun Yue of Yingchuan to compose in the style of the Zuo Tradition of the Spring and Autumn, producing the Annals of Han in thirty chapters. Its words were concise yet its events detailed, its arguments often elegant, and it circulated widely in the world. In the first year of the Taikang era of Jin, a man of Ji commandery excavated the tomb of King Xiang of Wei and obtained ancient bamboo-slip books written in tadpole script. The excavators paid them no heed, and they were often scattered and disordered. The emperor ordered Xun Xu, Director of the Secretariat, and He Qiao, Director of the Masters of Writing, to arrange them into fifteen sections in eighty-seven scrolls. Much was miscellaneous, fragmentary, strange, and absurd, and could not be reliably understood; only the Book of Changes and the Chronological Annals were most clearly distinguished. Its upper and lower sections of the Book of Changes are exactly the same as the present text. The Chronological Annals all use the first month of the Xia calendar, establishing yin as the year's beginning; they begin with the royal affairs of the Xia, Yin, and Zhou Three Dynasties, without distinction among feudal states. They specially record the state of Jin, beginning with the one called Shang Shu, then Marquis Wen, Marquis Zhao, down to Zhuang Bo of Quwo, ending with the destruction of Jin. They record Wei affairs alone, down to King Ai of Wei, whom they call "the present king." It is essentially the historical records of the state of Wei. Their writings are all arranged chronologically in sequence, and the text greatly resembles the Spring and Autumn Classic. Most of the events recorded accord with the Spring and Autumn and Mr. Zuo. Scholars therefore took the Spring and Autumn as the correct method of ancient historiography, and in their writings mostly followed the Spring and Autumn form.
Since Qin abolished the ancient script, texts and records were lost and scattered. At the beginning of Han the Intrigues of the Warring States was recovered; it records the stratagems of the wandering persuaders of the Warring States period. Afterward Lu Jia composed the Annals of Chu and Han to narrate the overthrow of Qin and Xiang Yu. There was also the Record of the Extinction of Yue, traditionally attributed to Zigong. In Later Han, Zhao Ye also wrote the Spring and Autumn of Wu and Yue. Their arrangement of words and comparison of events all differ from the Spring and Autumn, the Records of the Grand Historian, and the Book of Han; they were likely written hastily and are not proper historical records. In the eras of Emperors Ling and Xian, the realm fell into great disorder and the historiographers lost their regular posts. Erudite men, pitying this abolition, each recorded what they had seen and heard to preserve what would otherwise be lost. Afterward many talented men admired this example, and authors became extremely numerous. Moreover, since Later Han many scholars copied and extracted from old histories to make books of their own, some beginning with the Human Sovereign, some ending in recent times—each according to his intent, yet without proper form. There were also alley tales, abstruse, strange, absurd, and fabulous, whose truth or falsehood could not be determined. Yet they mostly concern the affairs of sovereigns and emperors; enlightened gentlemen must gather them broadly and survey them widely to distill their essentials, and so they are preserved in full—these are called miscellaneous histories.

The In antiquity the government of the court issued commands and orders; and the hundred offices received them, stored them in the official archives, each maintained their duties, and preserved them without forgetting. The Spring and Autumn Tradition says, "I looked in the various old archives"—this refers to such matters—as cataloged here. The Offices of Zhou: the Imperial Censor oversees the laws of court governance; the Grand Historian oversees the covenants and contracts of the myriad people and the certificates of debt, to assist in governing the realm—as cataloged here. The Thus the hundred offices and various bureaus each stored their own affairs, and the Grand Historian's duty was to gather and oversee them all. The During the Han dynasty, Xiao He established statutes and ordinances, Zhang Cang formulated rules and regulations, and Shushun Tong fixed ritual protocols; and categories branched and schools divided, and institutions gradually expanded. The Early in the Jin, ordinances and below amounted to more than nine hundred scrolls; and Emperor Wu of Jin ordered Jia Chong, General of Chariots and Cavalry, to draw broadly on the Confucian scholars, select the essentials, and add ten articles to the code. The remainder, insufficient for enduring transmission, became statutes; and what implemented institutions became ordinances; and what defined forms and rules became precedents—each returned to its office. The Gentry scholars wrote and recorded these, forming scrolls and chapters, yet they too were lost with the passing of dynasties. The Now, based on what survives, these are called the Old Affairs section.

The Offices of Zhou. the cited textPrime Ministerthe cited textSix Ministersthe cited text, the cited textZheng, Imperial Censorthe cited text, the cited text.-as cataloged here. The present Table of the Hundred Offices in the Book of Han lists the affairs of the various posts and records the order of those in office—this too is likely the ancient system—as cataloged here. The At the end of Han, Wang Long, Ying Shao, and others, finding the Table of the Hundred Offices incomplete, composed the Exegesis of Han Offices, Han Office Protocols, and similar books. The Afterward this continued, but in standard histories' tables and treatises the names of the hundred officials in office were no longer recorded. The Gentry scholars sometimes took books of office names and ranks, wrote and recorded them, and circulated them separately in the world. The After Song and Qi their books grew ever more numerous, yet scrolls and chapters piled up in fragments and were easily lost and scattered; and many were too trivial to be worth recording, and so were deleted—as cataloged here. The Those that survive and merit attention are compiled into the Officials section.

The In antiquity, since the historiographers oversaw the canonical texts, there were likely catalogs serving as their framework; and the system is buried and extinguished, and cannot be known again. The Confucius edited the Documents, separately providing prefaces that each explained the origin of the author. The two versions of the Odes by Han and Mao are similar in this regard—as cataloged here. The In Han times, Liu Xiang's Separate Records and Liu Xin's Seven Summaries analyzed categories and currents, each with its section; tracing the events, this is likely the ancient system. The After this, people could no longer distinguish their currents and categories, and recorded only book titles. The Men of broad learning, vexed by this confusion, therefore had Wang Jian compose the Seven Records and Ruan Xiaoxu compose the Seven Catalogs—both circulated separately. The In general form they followed Liu Xiang and Liu Xin, yet fell far short of them. The catalogs of earlier ages have also mostly been lost and scattered—as cataloged here. The Now, gathering what survives, they are compiled into the Bibliographic Records section.

The Historiographers must seek men of broad learning, strong memory, perspicacious understanding, and far-reaching insight to occupy their posts; and the hundred offices and myriad duties all depend upon them. The Therefore words of earlier sages and deeds of the past—none escaped their knowledge; celestial patterns and terrestrial forms—none escaped their scrutiny; the records of human affairs—none escaped their comprehension—as cataloged here. The Within they oversee the eight handles to instruct the king's governance; and without they wield the six canons to assist official administration. The They write of beauty to manifest goodness and record evil to hand down warning; and they encompass divine transformation, illuminate splendid virtue, exhaust the utmost profundity of sages, and detail the tireless effort of an age. The Since the historiographers were abolished long ago, the Han dynasty largely followed the old ways, and Ban Gu and Sima Qian continued them. The Since Wei and Jin, the practice has declined ever further. The posts of Nan and Dong were filled by those enriched by salary and leisure; and the offices of Zheng and Jun were rarely granted on the basis of talent. The Hence a proverb of the Liang era said: "If you don't fall off the carriage, you become an Author; and if you feel unwell, you become a Secretary. The Thus idle parasites strutted above the Extended Pavilion, while men who set forth words wielded their brushes beneath thatched roofs. The Records of a single age numbered as many as several dozen schools; and traditions differed, what was heard and seen conflicted, principle lost the mean, and language departed from essential form. The This caused the virtue of sincerity and respect to be lacking in the canonical texts, and the talent of loyalty and diligence to be untransmitted in the bamboo records. The This is the source of the defect. The Ban Gu classified the Records of the Grand Historian under the Spring and Autumn; now expanding its categories, there are thirteen types in all, separately forming the History section.
