The Wei had long lived in the northern frontier region of You and Shuo. In the reign of Emperor Xian, a divine being declared that they should move south. The throne was then transferred to his son Emperor Shengwu, who commanded a migration southward; though ravines and mountains cut off the route, they still meant to stop there. A divine beast appeared—shaped like a horse, sounding like an ox—that marched ahead to lead them; only after many years did the clan break out. They first established themselves in the old territory of the Xiongnu.

In the eighth month of Tianping 4, an enormous elephant arrived in Southern Yan Prefecture; Chen Tian'ai, a commoner of Dang Commandery, reported it; it was sent to the capital, a general amnesty was proclaimed, and the era name was changed. When a ruler keeps his own consumption within bounds, such creatures appear. In the eleventh month of Taihe 2, Xu Prefecture sent in a black fox as tribute. In the reign of King Cheng of Zhou, order reached great peace and a black fox was seen.

There will be great peace and your line will flourish; I shall not live to see it. When he finished speaking, he went on his way. Xiang turned to look: the old man had become a stone figure. Xiang is now seventy years old. On examination the stone figure is still there. In the year the emperor defeated Murong Bao, forty-two years had passed."

In the second month of the fifth year of Zhenjun, Zhangye Commandery reported: "In the age of the Cao house, at Daliugu in Qiuchi County, a mountain stone bore the form of a dragon-horse; on the stone horse's back was the inscription 'Great chastisement of Cao,' and the Jin house replaced Wei. Now the stone writing records the taboo names of our state's ancestors, displaying the token of Heaven's mandate." Envoys were dispatched to copy the writing. There were five great stones, all green in substance with white markings, between which writing formed. Two stones recorded Zhang and Lu of earlier times—effects already fulfilled. Three stones recorded the state's ancestors down to the present. The writing recorded the taboo name of Emperor Zhaocheng: "Succession through generations, four-six; Heaven's law is level; all under Heaven great peace"—fourteen characters in all; [3] Next it recorded the taboo name of Emperor Taizu, Emperor Daowu: "Corresponding king, record a thousand years"—seven characters in all; Next it recorded the taboo name of Emperor Taizong, Emperor Mingyuan: "Eldest son, two hundred twenty years"—eight characters in all; [4] Next: "The Peaceful Heaven King succeeds the world and governs"—eight characters in all; Next the taboo name of the Crown Prince: "Chang enfeoffs Mount Tai"—five characters. At first he was enfeoffed as Prince of Peace; the astronomical registers also granted the title "True Lord of Peace," matching the stone writing. After the taboo name of Emperor Taizong there was a human figure carrying a small child. All who saw it said: "The emperor loves the imperial grandson, raising and tending him, never leaving his side—this is the heavenly image of spiritual accord, a true gift of Heaven." Thereupon Guard General, Prince of Le'an Fan, Assistant General Who Supports the State, Prince of Jianning Chong, General Who Conquers the West, Prince of Changshan Su, and General Who Conquers the South, Prince of Hengnong Xi Jin submitted: "We have heard that the rise of emperors and kings always carries a token of mandate, enabling them to align the three powers and establish the supreme norm; the glories of the Three and Five were alike in this. Fuxi received the River Chart and the Eight Trigrams; Yu of Xia received the Luo Writ and the Nine Categories—so that sacred deeds were known in the past and sage footprints shown to posterity. We consider that Your Majesty's virtue matches Heaven and Earth and your brilliance equals sun and moon; Heaven-born sagacity, you arose in response to the age; the upper spirits look down and every auspicious sign gathers. Thus in the first year of Shiguang the Celestial Master presented the astronomical registers, conferring the title 'True Lord of Peace. Your Majesty deeply held to emptiness and humility and accepted only after years. Sincerity moved numinous things; trust and kindness harmonized Heaven and man; thus your might extended over the four seas and your bounty flowed through the realm; all under Heaven within the four seas none failed to submit. Now Zhangye Commandery reports: at Daliugu in Qiuchi County great stones of green substance and white markings bear writing between them, recording the taboo names of the state's ancestors and displaying the token of the mandate and the span of rule. From princes and dukes down through every office, all who beheld this script were moved; unanimously they said: since antiquity the verification of auspicious signs has never blazed as brightly as today. This is the highest spirits descending mandate—the omen of the state's boundless fortune. We are fortunate to encounter this great transformation, bathed in glory and favor; having no means to respond to Heaven's blessing and enlarge Heaven and Earth, we respectfully deliberated with the assembled ministers: the stone inscription should be proclaimed throughout the four seas, so that pretenders beyond our borders know that Heaven's mandate has a rightful home." An edict said: "This is Heaven and Earth's generous gift—the legacy sign of our forefathers; how could I alone have brought it about? Let it be done as memorialized."

In the sixth month of Huangxing 3, Wei Yuan reported: "At Pengcheng I sent a detached commander who reached Suikou in eight days to intercept Chen Xianda. [5] A forager five li from camp saw a white-haired man on a white horse, a commander, [6] who called to him and said: 'On the eighteenth at chen hour I will come; tell your general to enter from the northeast—I will put the rebels to flight. At the shen hour the rebels will be utterly defeated; Suyu and Huaiyang will fall without doubt. I shall make the Huai bank a boundary for your state; I shall drive Xiapi city out, [7] without troubling your forces." Ten days later this man again saw the white-haired old man east of Ximatai, two li south of Pengcheng, also riding a white horse, coming from the northeast; he called to this man and said: "I am traveling north of the Huai together with the gods of the Eastern Sea, the Four Waterways, Mount Tai, and the Northern Peak to help your two generals sweep the enemy away—it is already settled. Are you high and low not rejoicing?" Then suddenly he vanished." An edict directed Yuan to build altars and mark where the old man had appeared before and after.

He told Xing: 'Go back—I am a secretariat gentleman of Emperor Xiaowen, sent to tell Li Xian not to fear the enemy dam; it will break this month.' After two steps they wrote down his name and told him to report at once. Xing woke; at dawn he returned to the city and reported the dream in full. On the twenty-seventh of the seventh month the dam broke."

That day a woman came to Marquis Sun's residence in Lu County offering a jade seal for sale. The Sun family obtained the seal and marveled at it; they sought the woman, but no one knew where she had gone. Its inscription read: "Drought and pestilence pacified." Celestial Master Kou said: "The dragon-script seal tradition identifies this as the spirits' three-character seal."

Its jade hue was lustrous and its mold-work exquisitely fine. All officials said: "Granted by the spirits—not made by human hands." Next recorded the taboo name of Emperor Taizong, Emperor Mingyuan: "Eldest son, two hundred twenty years"—eight characters in all. Bainna, Northern, Ji, and Bureau editions read "six" for "eight"; Southern and Palace read "eight." Palace edition note: Emperor Mingyuan's taboo Si plus seven following characters—eight should read six." The commentary is accepted; we follow the Southern and Palace editions.

Your servant at Pengcheng sent a separate commander who in eight days [reached] Suikou to intercept the rebel general Chen Xianda. All editions read "eighth month" for "eight days"; the Cefu yuansgui, juan 398 〈Page 4736.〉 The text reads "eight days." Collation: the sixth-month memorial cannot be followed by an eighth-month narrative; "month" is a scribal error. "Month" is corrupt; we emend according to the Cefu.

將軍冊府 〈同上卷頁〉 「軍」作「杖」。 按「將軍」謂此白頭翁率領一批軍士，然統觀此段，似只一人。 「將杖」猶言「持杖」，疑是。 此「將軍」乃因舊本與次行「語汝將軍」相並而訛。
General. Cefu 〈Same fascicle and page.〉 The text reads "staff" for "army." "General" means this white-haired old man led a body of troops; yet surveying the passage, there seems to be only one man. "Wielding a staff" is like "holding a staff"—possibly correct. This "general" may be corrupt through juxtaposition with the following line "tell your general."

I shall drive Xiapi city out. Cefu 〈Same fascicle and page.〉 After "city" there is the character "rebel." Without "rebel" the sense is obscure; the character probably belongs.

河內人張超於壞樓所城北故佛圖處獲玉印以獻冊府卷二三 〈二四六頁〉 、卷七九 〈九一七頁〉 「壞樓所城」作「懷樓新城」。 按一０六上地形志上河內是懷州屬郡，懷州武德郡有懷縣，這裏「壞」當是「懷」之訛，指懷縣。 地形志於懷縣下云「有懷城」，志例，已遷治者，稱「有某城」，皆指故城，可知當時懷遷治新城。 冊府作「新城」當是。 但「樓」字不可解，疑亦字訛。
Collation on Zhang Chao's jade seal: Zizhi tongjian reads "Huailou New City" where the text has "ruined fort." 〈Page 246.〉 Fascicle 79. 〈Page 917.〉 The text reads "Huai fortress new city" for "ruined fort city." Collation: "ruined" likely stands for Huai County in Huai Prefecture per the geography treatise. The Geography under Huai County notes "there is Huai city"; by the gazetteer's rule, for relocated seats it says "there is such-and-such city," always meaning the old city—showing that Huai had moved to a new seat. The Cefu's "new city" is probably correct. Collation: the character "lou" is unexplained and probably corrupt.

貌州上言木連理生於河內之沁縣按卷一０六上地形志上懷州河內郡有沁水縣。 懷州未置前，此縣當屬豫州。 據水經注卷九沁水篇，亦作「沁水城」，疑這裏「沁」下脫「水」字。
Collation on Qin County, Henei: the geography treatise lists Qinshui County under Henei in Huai Prefecture. Collation: before Huai Prefecture existed, the county was under Yuzhou. Collation: the Water Classic commentary reads "Qinshui city"; "water" may be omitted after "Qin" here.
