The commentary says: Xiao Ya says, "Glorious was the Zhou of Zong, Bao Si ruined it." This is a poem about King You of Zhou. At that time, although King You perished, the crown prince Yijiu was enthroned as King Ping. Yet the poet speaks of ruin because he thought the achievements of King Wen and King Wu were thereby swept away; although Eastern Zhou remained, it could no longer be revived. When it says "ruin," it is language expressing extreme condemnation. In the disorder of the Wu clan the Tang imperial clan was nearly exterminated, and eight or nine in ten of the worthy scholar-officials did not escape. Given Taizong's governance, his lingering virtue and remaining influence among the people were not yet distant, yet they nearly came to an end; was the evil not far greater than a single Bao Si could compare to? For all Taizong's clarity, he failed to know his sons; when the time came to depose one heir and install another, he could not decide for himself, and in the end set up a dull-witted boy. Gaozong drowned himself in the bedchamber, took no warning from the first trace of frost, and poison spread through the realm, bringing calamity upon the state and the imperial house. Alas—between father and son, husband and wife, how difficult it is! How can one fail to be cautious?
