__FORCETOC__Empress Wu Zetian, posthumously honored as Empress Zetian the Shun Sheng, bore the taboo name Zhao and was of the Wu clan. She came from Wenshui in Bingzhou. His father was Wu Shihuo, who served as minister of works and military governor of Jingzhou and was enfeoffed as Duke of Ying.

后年十四，太宗聞其有色，選為才人。 太宗崩，后削髮為比丘尼，居于感業寺。 高宗幸感業寺，見而悅之，復召入宮。 久之，立為昭儀，進號宸妃。 永徽六年，高宗廢皇后王氏，立宸妃為皇后。
When she was fourteen Taizong heard of her beauty and selected her as a court lady of talent. When Taizong died she shaved her head and became a Buddhist nun, dwelling at Ganye Temple. Gaozong visited Ganye Temple, saw her and was pleased, and recalled her to the palace. After some time she was made Lady of Bright Deportment and advanced to the title of Imperial Consort. In the sixth year of Yonghui Gaozong deposed Empress Wang and established Imperial Consort Wu as empress.

After Xianqing Gaozong often suffered from wind affliction. When the hundred offices reported affairs he frequently had the empress decide them, and she often matched his intent; thereby she came to participate in state governance. Once the empress held exclusive favor and a share in government, she repeatedly submitted memorials on the benefits and harms under heaven, striving to win hearts. Gaozong's years were advanced and he suffered illness; the empress increasingly handled affairs, and he ultimately could not restrain her. Gaozong regretted it and secretly wished to depose her, but the plot leaked and did not succeed. In the first year of Shangyuan Gaozong styled himself Heavenly Sovereign and the empress styled herself Heavenly Empress. The people of all under heaven called them the "Two Sages." In the twelfth month of the first year of Hongdao Gaozong died. His testament decree ordered the crown prince to ascend the throne immediately; for great military and state matters left undecided, the Heavenly Empress's decisions were to be followed jointly. On the day jiazi the crown prince ascended the throne, honored the empress as empress dowager, and held court to rule by decree. A general amnesty was proclaimed, and officials of merit rank below the ninth grade were granted one rank. On the day gengwu Yuanjia, Prince of Han, was appointed Grand Commandant; Yuan Gui, Prince of Huo, Minister of Education; and Yuanming, Prince of Shu, Minister of Works. On the day jiaxu Liu Ren'gui was appointed left vice director of the Department of State, Pei Yan secretariat director, and Liu Qixian palace attendant, all as associates of the secretariat and chancellery of the third rank. On the day wuyin Guo Daiju, Wei Xuantong, and Cen Changqian were appointed associates of the secretariat and chancellery of the third rank. On the day guiwei Guo Zhengyi was dismissed from office. In the first year of Guangzhai, on the day guiwei in the first month, the era name was changed to Sisheng. On the day guisi Wei Hongmin, left attendant-in-ordinary, was appointed minister of the palace storehouse and associate of the secretariat and chancellery of the third rank.

On the day wuwu in the second month the emperor was deposed as Prince of Luling and confined. On the day jiwei Dan, Prince of Yu, was established as emperor; his consort Lady Liu of the Liu clan was made empress; and Chengqi, Prince of Yongping, was established as crown prince. A general amnesty was proclaimed and the era name was changed to Wenming. Civil and military officials of the fifth rank and above were granted one degree of nobility, and officials of merit rank of the ninth rank and above were granted two degrees of merit. Offices were conferred on the elderly by age register, and grain and silk were granted. Officials of the fifth rank and above were to recommend one person they knew. The empress dowager continued to hold court and rule by decree. On the day gengshen the imperial grandson Chongzhao was deposed and reduced to commoner status, and the commoner Li Xian was killed at Bazhou. On the day jiazi the emperor led the multitude of officials to offer elevated honorific titles at Wucheng Hall. On the day dingmao the emperor was formally enthroned. On the day dingchou Wang Dezheng, minister of rites, was appointed palace attendant, and Liu Yizhi, secretariat secretary, was appointed associate of the secretariat and chancellery of the third rank. On the day gengchen Wang Yuanzhi, grand master and Daoist priest of the Jade Purity Abbey, was posthumously granted the title grand master of splendid happiness with the golden seal and purple ribbon.

On the day wuwu in the seventh month the Kunlun people of Guangzhou killed their military governor Lu Yuanrui. On the day yichou the Turks raided Shuozhou. Cheng Wuting, grand general of the Left Martial Guard, defeated them. On the day xinwei a comet appeared in the west.

On the day jiayin in the ninth month a general amnesty was proclaimed and the era name was changed. Banners and flags honored white; inner and outer official robes that had been green were changed to blue-green; official names were greatly changed; and the Eastern Capital was renamed the Divine Capital. Laozi's mother was posthumously honored as Empress of Prior Heaven. On the day bingchen Cheng Wuting, grand general of the Left Awesome Guard, was appointed pacification commissioner of the Chanyu Route to guard against the Turks. On the day jisi Wu's fifth-generation ancestor Keji was posthumously honored as Duke of Lu, and his mother Lady Pei of the Pei clan as Lady of Lu; the great-great-grandfather Juchang was made Grand Commandant and Prince of Beiping commandery, and his mother Lady Liu of the Liu clan was styled princess consort; the great-grandfather Jian was made Grand Commandant and Prince of Jincheng commandery, and his mother Lady Song of the Song clan was styled princess consort; the grandfather Hua was made Grand Commandant and Prince of Taiyuan commandery, and his mother Lady Zhao of the Zhao clan was styled princess consort; her deceased father Shi Hu was made Grand Preceptor and Prince of Wei, and his mother Lady Yang of the Yang clan was styled princess consort. On the day dingchou Li Jingye, acting prefect of Liuzhou, raised troops at Yangzhou to suppress the rebellion. Wei Hongmin was demoted to prefect of Fenzhou.

On the day guiwei in the tenth month Li Chongfu, acting prefect of Chuzhou, surrendered Shanyang, Anyi, and Yancheng counties to Jingye. On the day jiashen Xiaoyi, Duke of Liang commandery and grand general of the Left Jade Seal Guard, was appointed campaign commander-in-chief of the Yangzhou Route, with Li Zhishi, grand general of the Left Golden Wild Goose Guard, as his deputy. They led three hundred thousand troops to resist Li Jingye. On the day dinghai Qian Weidao, censor-in-chief of the Left Rectification Censorate, was appointed acting secretariat director and associate of the Phoenix Pavilion and Luan Terrace of the third rank; Li Jingchen, secretary of the Phoenix Pavilion, was appointed co-signatory of the Phoenix Pavilion and Luan Terrace affairs. On the day renchen Li Jingye captured Runzhou. On the day bingshen Pei Yan was killed. The fifth-generation Duke of Lu was posthumously given the name Jing; the Prince of Beiping commandery Gongs; the Prince of Jincheng commandery Yikang; the Prince of Taiyuan commandery Ancheng; and the Prince of Wei Zhongxiao. On the day dingyou a partial amnesty was proclaimed for Yang and Chu prefectures. Jingye's surname was restored to Xu. Liu Qixian was demoted to prefect of Chenzhou. Li Jingchen was dismissed from office. Shen Junliang, right historian, and Cui Zan, compilation director, were appointed remonstrance grand masters and co-signatories of the Phoenix Pavilion and Luan Terrace affairs.

On the day xinhai in the eleventh month Heichi Changzhi, grand general of the Left Eagle-raising Guard, was appointed campaign commander-in-chief of the Jiangnan Route. On the day gengshen Su Xiaoxiang, right gate guard general, fought Xu Jingye at Axi Creek and was killed. On the day yichou Xu Jingye's general Wang Nashang killed Jingye and surrendered. On the day dingmao Guo Daiju was dismissed from office. Wei Fangzhi, secretary of the Luan Terrace, was appointed secretary of the Phoenix Pavilion and co-signatory of the Phoenix Pavilion and Luan Terrace affairs.

The Turks raided the frontier. Chunyu Chuping, middle commander of the Left Jade Seal Guard, was appointed campaign commander of the Yangqu Route to attack them. Shen Junliang was dismissed from office.

On the day jisi in the tenth month a mountain emerged in Xinfeng county. The county was renamed Qingshan, prisoners were pardoned, corvée and tax levies were remitted for one year, and a three-day drinking feast was granted.

In the twelfth month corvée and tax levies for the people of Bingzhou were remitted for the rest of their lives.

On the day xinchou in the fourth month the consort Pei of Emperor Xiaojing was posthumously titled Empress Ai and buried at Gongling. On the day guichou, because of drought, prisoners were reviewed and capital officials of the ninth rank and above were ordered to submit memorials. On the day renxu Pei Judao was appointed chancellery director.

On the day dingmao in the seventh month a hen in Jizhou transformed into a rooster. On the day yihai the capital was shaken by an earthquake, and gold rained down at Guangzhou.

八月壬子，魏玄同兼檢校納言。 交趾人李嗣仙殺安南都護劉延祐，據交州，桂州司馬曹玄靜敗之。 是月，突厥寇朔州，燕然道行軍大總管黑齒常之敗之。
On the day renzi in the eighth month Wei Xuantong additionally served as supervisory chancellery director. Li Sixian of Jiaozhi killed Protector-General of Annan Liu Yanyou and seized Jiaozhou, but was defeated by Cao Xuanjing, military aide of Guizhou. That month the Turks raided Shuozhou, and Heichi Changzhi, campaign commander-in-chief of the Yanran Route, defeated them.

On the day jimao in the ninth month Yang Chucheng of Guozhou styled himself a commandant and recruited men of the prefecture to welcome the Prince of Luling from Fangzhou. The plot failed and he was killed.

On the day gengzi in the tenth month Cuan Baobi, middle commander of the Right Gate Guard, fought the Turks and was defeated.

On the day renchen in the twelfth month Wei Daigu was appointed campaign commander-in-chief of the Anxi Route, with Protector-General of Anxi Yan Wengu as his deputy, to attack the Tibetans.

That year there was a great famine. On the day jiazi in the first month of the fourth year of Chuigong the ancestral temples were increased to seven, and temples to Gaozu, Taizong, and Gaozong were established at Shendu. On the day gengwu the Qianyuan Hall was demolished and the Bright Hall was built.

On the day dingsi in the seventh month a general amnesty was proclaimed. The "Treasure Chart" was renamed "Heaven-Bestowed Sacred Chart," the Luo River was renamed the Yongchang Luo River, its spirit was enfeoffed as Marquis of Manifest Holiness with the additional rank of special advancement, and fishing was forbidden. Mount Song was renamed the Divine Peak, and its spirit was enfeoffed as King of the Central Heaven, Grand Preceptor, commissioner with full credentials, and grand governor-general. A five-day drinking feast was granted. On the day wuwu the capital was shaken by an earthquake.

On the day wushen Chong was killed. On the day gengxu Zhen, Prince of Yue, raised troops at Yuzhou to suppress rebellion. On the day xinhai a partial amnesty was proclaimed for Bozhou.

On the day bingchen in the ninth month Qu Chongyu, grand general of the Left Leopard Bow Guard, was appointed commander-in-chief of the center army, and Cen Changqian was appointed commander-in-chief of the rear army to resist the Prince of Yue Zhen; Zhang Guangfu was appointed overall commander of the armies. The Prince of Yue Zhen and the Prince of Langye commandery Chong were struck from the imperial clan register, and their surnames were changed to the Hui clan. Zhen was killed. On the day bingyin Yuzhou was granted amnesty. Emperor Zhongzong, Emperor Dahe Dasheng Dazhao Xia, taboo name Xian, was the seventh son of Gaozong. His mother was Empress Zetian the Shun Sheng of the Wu clan. When Gaozong died he ascended the throne as crown prince, and the empress dowager held court and exercised imperial authority. In the first month of the first year of Sisheng he was deposed and lived in retirement at Junzhou, and was later moved to Fangzhou. In the second year of Shengli he was restored as crown prince. The empress dowager was old and ill. In the first month of the first year of Shenlong Zhang Jianzhi and others used Forest of Feathers troops to suppress rebellion. In the sixth month the empress, the Princess of Anle, and Ma Qinke, attendant cavalier, rebelled. On the day renwu the emperor died at the age of fifty-five. He was given the posthumous title Emperor Xiaohe. In the thirteenth year of Tianbao the posthumous title was augmented to Emperor Dahe Dasheng Dazhao Xiao. [Commentary] The commentary says: In antiquity when Confucius composed the Spring and Autumn Annals, rebellious ministers and wicked sons were filled with fear. Regarding rulers who murdered their sovereigns and usurped the state, he did not expunge or cut them off. Was this not because those who seized possession of the realm had committed the greatest of crimes, and by not suppressing the facts he made their great wickedness known without concealment? From Sima Qian and Ban Gu onward, all wrote annals for Empress Gao. Although the Lü clan did not usurp Han, they seized control of state affairs, and so the historians did not dare suppress the facts. Did they not grasp the intent of the sage? Perhaps this also happened to accord with the method of the Spring and Autumn Annals. The old histories of Tang followed this precedent, listing Empress Wu in the basic annals. The practice surely reaches back to a distant origin.

夫吉凶之於人，猶影響也，而為善者得吉常多，其不幸而罹於凶者有矣； 為惡者未始不及於凶，其幸而免者亦時有焉。 而小人之慮，遂以為天道難知，為善未必福，而為惡未必禍也。 武后之惡，不及於大戮，所謂幸免者也。 至中宗韋氏，則禍不旋踵矣。 然其親遭母后之難，而躬自蹈之，所謂下愚之不移者歟！
Fortune and misfortune for a person are like shadow and echo, and those who do good usually receive fortune, though there are those who are unlucky and meet with misfortune; those who do evil never fail to encounter misfortune, though there are times when the fortunate escape it. Yet the thinking of petty men concludes that the way of Heaven is hard to know, that doing good does not necessarily bring blessing, and that doing evil does not necessarily bring calamity. The wickedness of Empress Wu did not reach the point of great execution. This is what is called a narrow escape. As for Zhongzong and the Wei clan, calamity followed without delay.
