The appraisal says: Ruizong, relying on his son's achievement, held the throne only briefly and had little to commend. Alas, the harm women do to men is very great! From Gaozu down to Zhongzong, within several decades calamity from women struck twice; though the Tang mandate was cut off and then restored, Zhongzong could not save himself and the Wei clan was destroyed to the last. Xuanzong personally quelled that disorder—it should have been a warning—yet he was ruined again by a woman. When he applied himself to government at the beginning of Kaiyuan, he nearly brought the age to great peace—how flourishing it was! Once his extravagant heart stirred, the desires of all under Heaven were insufficient for his pleasure; he drowned in what he loved excessively and forgot what he should have guarded, until he fled and lost the state without regret. Considering how far apart his beginning and end were, how remote the habits of his nature were, it came to this. How careful one must be! How careful one must be!
