In the fifth month on xinyou he was indisposed and ordered the crown prince to supervise the state. That evening the emperor died in the Purple Forbidden Inner Hall at age fifty-three. [Appraisal] The appraisal says: At the Tianbao disorders the great rebel suddenly arose and the Son of Heaven fled the capital. At that time Suzong as crown prince drilled troops to suppress the bandits—truly he held the proper role! Yet in Xizong's time Tang's prestige and virtue still lived in men's hearts and discipline was not yet broken—how did that compare with the Tianbao era? Yet Xizong was in Shu while the various commands' troops united in concerted effort, broke Huang Chao, and recovered the capital. From this it may be said that even if Suzong had not immediately taken the throne, he still could have broken the rebels. From Gaozu onward the throne had been yielded three times to sons, but only Ruizong, in awe of heaven's warning, acted from sincere heart—as for Gaozong and Xuanzong, was that truly their intent? In Daizong's time remnants still remained; in pacifying disorder and preserving what had been won he was roughly a ruler of middling talent!
