In the first month of the twenty-first year, on guisi, the emperor died at Huining Hall, aged sixty-four. Emperor Shunzong, posthumously honored as the Supreme Virtue, Great Sagely, Great Peace, and Filial, bore the taboo name Song and was the eldest son of Dezong. His mother was Empress Dowager Zhuangxian, née Wang. He was first enfeoffed Prince of Xuancheng; in the sixth month of Dali 14 he was promoted to Prince of Xuan. In the twelfth month on yimao he was installed as heir apparent.
204
He was by nature generous and benevolent, devoted to learning and skilled in clerical script. He greatly honored his tutors and always bowed to them first. When he accompanied Dezong to Fengtian he often stood at his side with bow in hand. When the Princess of Guo was condemned for sorcery—she was his consort's mother—Dezong grew suspicious and several times nearly deposed him; only Li Bi's protection saved him. Later, at a banquet at Yuzao Palace, painted warships floated for water games while palace women rowed and sang amid many instruments. Dezong was delighted and asked the heir apparent, "How does today compare? The heir apparent answered by quoting the line "Delight in music, but do not be reckless." When Pei Yanling and Wei Qumou held power everyone feared they would reach the chancellorship; the heir apparent repeatedly watched their conduct and argued they were unfit. Thus neither man was ever appointed.

In the first month of the fifteenth year the eunuchs Chen Hongzhi and others rebelled. On gengzi the emperor died, aged forty-three, with the posthumous title Sagely Spirit, Martial, and Filial. In Dazhong 3 his posthumous title was expanded to Sagely Civil, Martial, Great Sagely, Supreme Spirit, and Filial. [Appraisal] The appraisal says: Dezong was suspicious, harsh, and thin-skinned. Taking forceful clarity as his virtue, he resented upright criticism yet welcomed the flattery of schemers. Hence his suspicion of Xiao Fu's disdain, his charge that Jiang Gongfu peddled blunt honesty, and his refusal to tolerate either; yet his use of Lu Qi and Zhao Zan led to defeat and chaos without final repentance. After the Fengtian crisis he punished himself deeply, then pursued an indulgent policy. The court thus weakened while frontier commands grew stronger; Tang's fall stemmed largely from this. Xianzong was firm, bright, and decisive. From his accession he burned to pacify rebellion, heeded loyal counsel, ignored clamor, and ultimately succeeded. After Wu Yuanji's execution powerful commands and fierce generals sought to repent and submit. Tang authority nearly revived; their relative merit scarcely needs comparison. Yet in his late years he trusted unfit men, left his work unfinished, and died by unforeseen violence—worse, in that respect, than Dezong. Alas! Small men can ruin a state without foolish or dark rulers; even sage emperors, once deluded, suffer harm. Han Yu once said that during Shunzong's twenty years as heir apparent the realm secretly benefited from him. Yet his reign was brief; illness kept him from achieving his aims—a cause for lament.
