In the eighth month on renchen Wang Zongshi, protective eunuch-commander of the Left Divine Strategy Army, installed Prince of Yun Wen as heir apparent to handle state and military affairs. On guisi the emperor died in the Hall of Universal Tranquility, aged fifty. His posthumous title was Sagely Martial and Dedicated Literary Filial Emperor. In the thirteenth year of Xiantong his posthumous title was augmented to Primordial Sagely to the Manifest Bright, Accomplished Martial, Dedicated Literary, Sagely Wise, Manifest Benevolence, Divine Perceptive, Admirable Way, and Greatly Filial Emperor. 【Praise】The Annals' method is this: when a ruler is murdered and the murderer goes unpunished, the state itself is held deeply at fault—as a realm without loyal ministers and sons. Xianzong's murderers survived through three reigns unpunished. As for Wenzong, he could not clarify Hongzhi and the others' crimes to set the state's penal standard right; he could only kill them—which is lamentable. Muzong and Jingzong were foolish youths who lost virtue; because their reigns were brief the realm had not yet collapsed into disorder, yet Jingzong in the end died by assassination—what will to punish the murderers could he have had! Wenzong was by nature respectful, frugal, and refined in learning; he once read Taizong's Essentials of Government and sighed with admiration. When he took the throne he was keen on governance; at Yanying audiences with chancellors he usually continued until the eleventh watch. By Tang custom the Son of Heaven held court on odd days; he ordered that canceled and released court days should all fall on even days. Whenever he appointed officials he summoned and questioned them, personally testing their ability. Therefore at the beginning of Dahe government was put in order and the age was called clear and bright. Yet he was benevolent but indecisive; inheriting his father and elder brother's abuses, eunuchs bent power, and because he could not master them by the right method he was trapped in the end. The Sweet Dew affair brought disaster on the loyal; unable to overcome wrongful indignation, the worthy drank resentment to the dregs. From this perspective, that he could kill Hongzhi was enough to fulfill his purpose.
305
In antiquity Wuding obtained one Fu Yue and made the Shang high ancestor. Wuzong employed one Li Deyu and thereby accomplished his great achievements. Yet he energetically abolished the Buddhist law while personally receiving Daoist registers and taking medicine to seek long life. From this one sees he was not a wise man wholly free from delusion; only his likes and dislikes differed. Xuanzong was skilled in hearing and deciding but took scrutiny for clarity and showed no further benevolent grace. Alas, from this time onward Tang declined!
