On the first day of the third month, wuxu, there was a total solar eclipse. On renyin his illness became critical; Prince of Shou Jie was established as imperial younger brother and charged with state and military affairs. On guimao the emperor died in the Hall of Martial Virtue at the age of twenty-seven. 【Appraisal】The appraisal says: From Muzong onward for eight generations of Tang, seven rulers were installed by eunuchs. Yet then the decline and fall of Tang—was it only the affliction of the frontier commands? The court is the root of the realm, the ruler is the root of the court, and the one who first takes the throne is the root of the ruler. If the root from the beginning is not correct, how can one set the realm right? Yizong and Xizong stood at the beginning of Tang's political decline, and muddled rulers succeeded one another in turn. At the time of Qianfu, great drought and locusts came year after year; the people were distressed and bandits arose, and the disorder then could no longer be sustained—was it perhaps also a convergence of heaven and man!
