Eulogy: Since antiquity states have fallen not only under foolish, mediocre, or brutal rulers. Calamity and disorder accumulate gradually; when the great momentum is already spent and one meets that moment, even wisdom and courage may avail nothing—true misfortune, as with Zhaozong. Zhaozong was bright and keen and at first wished to restore the dynasty, but external threats had already formed, worthy aides were lacking within, and though he sought extraordinary talent he appointed unfit men and only deepened disorder. From Tang's fall its lingering poison and cruelty persisted through more than fifty years of the Five Dynasties until the realm split and extreme disorder ran its course. Tracing that calamity and disorder—was its gradual accumulation the work of a single morning or evening?
