In all, across the two hundred eighty-nine years of Tang recorded here, there were ninety-three solar eclipses: ninety at new moon, two at month's end, and one on the second day of the month. Solar anomalies — Early in Zhenguan, the Turks reported five suns shining at once. In the third month of the twenty-third year, the sun turned red and gave no light. Li Chunfeng said: "When the sun changes color, military affairs grow urgent. He also said: "The ruler lacks virtue; his ministers throw the state into disorder." Puyang Fu also said: "When the sun sheds no light, the ruler falls ill."

On jiwei in the twelfth month of year 14 of Kaiyuan, the sun was red as ochre. On bingwu in the third month of the twenty-ninth year, wind-borne dust veiled the sky; the sun gave no light, and day was nearly as dark as dusk. The omen prognosticated severe capital punishment and a people who took no joy in life.

On bingyin in the seventh month of year 2 of Dali, beside the sun stood azure and crimson vapor more than four zhang long. On renshen, above the sun stood crimson vapor two zhang long. From yihai through xinchou in the ninth month, azure and crimson vapor stood beside the sun. On dingsi in the first month of the third year, the sun bore a yellow crown and azure-crimson ear-rings. On xinchou, it was likewise. In general, vapor standing long and upright is called straight; that lying across is called a frame; that standing atop the sun is called a crown. Straight means someone will rise on his own; frame means battle. It is also said: "Crimson vapor above the sun means the ruler has a sycophantic minister. Yellow signifies earthworks; azure and crimson signify distress."

In the intercalary third month of the fourth year, beside the sun stood an object like a second sun. On xinwei in the fourth month of the fifth year, a white rainbow pierced the sun. On xinmao in the first month of the tenth year, outside the sun stood an object like a crow. On jimao in the first month of the eleventh year, the sun was purple-red and gave no light.

On jiashen in the first month of the second year, the sun bore yellow-white halos with azure-crimson backing arcs above. On yiyou it was again likewise; within the halo a white rainbow grew eastward, more than a hundred zhang long. On yisi in the second month, the sun bore yellow-white halos like a half-ring; dark azure clouds flanked the sun, each more than six chi long; then the clouds shifted into shapes like men and horses and dissolved. Old prognostications say: "Backing arcs are a sign of rebellion. When the sun's halo has a rainbow, great war follows; a half-halo means mutual plotting. Dark azure is an omen of sinister fortune. Clouds flanking the sun are a sign of rebellious ministers controlling the ruler. When they change into human shapes, rebellious ministers are meant; when into horses, warfare. On xinwei in the first month of the third year, the sun bore yellow-white halos with azure-crimson backing arcs above. On guisi in the second month, the sun bore yellow-white halos like a half-ring with azure-crimson backing arcs. On gengxu, the sun bore yellow-white halos with azure-crimson backing arcs. Lunar anomalies — Early in Zhenguan, the Turks reported three moons appearing at once.

White vapor means warfare and mourning; the Five Chariots govern the armory; the Chariot Shaft is the rear palace; its lodges are the Jin allotment and the capital region.

The Eastern Well is the capital-region allotment; the Central Terrace and Literary Glory are the stations of generals and ministers; the Two Rivers are the Celestial Gate.

On xinyou, the intercalary month's new moon, a comet appeared in the west, several zhang long; it was extinguished in the fifth month. The Bond is Lu; the Stomach, the Hairy Head, and the Net are Zhao; the Beak and the Three Stars are Tang; the Eastern Well and the Ghost Carriage are the capital-region allotment; half of the Willow is the Zhou allotment. When two comets appear together, repeated calamity is meant. Moreover, between the Bond and the Stomach lies the Heavenly Granary.

The prognostication reads: "When the color is white, it is born of the Great White. In the seventh year, on bingyin in the twelfth month, a long comet appeared below the Shen lodge, its tail spanning the sky. Long stars are a type of comet. Shen is the Tang allotment star.

As a rule, comets appearing at dawn point west and those at dusk point east — that is normal; never before had one swept all four directions and violated the lodges so severely. On jiashen, a guest star emerged below the Eastern Well. On wuzi, a separate guest star emerged inside the End Gate, near the Screen Star. On bingwu in the fourth month, the guest star below the Eastern Well vanished. On guiyou in the fifth month, the guest star inside the End Gate vanished. On renwu, a guest star like a bushy star appeared beside the Celestial Lock of the Southern Dipper. On dingyou in the eighth month, a comet appeared at the Xu and Wei lodges; Xu and Wei are the Dark Boar. Xiao — a name signifying depletion. On yisi in the tenth month of year 3, a comet appeared at the head of the Zhen lodge, more than two zhang long; it gradually lengthened, pointing west. On yimao in the eleventh month, a comet appeared in the east at the Wei and Ji lodges, spanning heaven east to west; on renchen in the twelfth month it vanished. On guiyou in the first month of year 4, a comet appeared at the Feathered Forest. This is the Wei allotment. On bingwu in the intercalary month, a comet appeared northwest of the Rolled Tongue; on jimao in the second month it vanished. On gengshen in the second month of year 5, a comet appeared between the Encampment and the Eastern Wall; after twenty days it was extinguished. In the third month of year 2, the sky was long overcast; on the night of yiyou in the fourth month the clouds parted slightly, and a comet appeared at the Upper Step, more than ten zhang long; it traveled east into the Supreme Palace, sweeping the Great Horn, and entered the Celestial Market; after thirty-seven days it grew longer, reaching more than twenty zhang, then cloud and shade hid it.

In the first month of year 2, a guest star like a peach appeared below the Canopy of the Purple Palace; it gradually traveled to the Serving Maid. On dingmao, a streaming star rose from Literary Glory and reached the guest star; the guest star did not move; on jisi the guest star was at the Pole, guarding it; even into the next year it still did not depart. The prognostication reads: "Generals and ministers will lead armies forth." In the evening of the fifth month, a star below the Ji lodge was like a torch flame, blazing upward; at first people thought it was a fire burning; only after it rose more than a zhang did it fall. The prognostication reads: "This is the Engine star; below it there will be disorder."

In the afternoon on wuxu of the third month of year 6, under an overcast, cold sky, a streaming star as large as a one-hu vessel fell between Yan and Yun; its sound shook the ground for hundreds of li, and wild pheasants cried out everywhere; above the place where it fell rose red vapor like an upright serpent, more than a zhang long, which did not fade until evening. At the time prognosticators held that the sun was in Xu — the Lu allotment — and that within less than ten years its lord would be killed and the land divided. In the first month of year 9, a large star like half a mat rose from below, lighting the ground, and a host of small stars followed it. On xinsi of the fourth month, a large streaming star left a tail-trail more than five zhang long, lighting the ground; it vanished west of the Right Sombre Lance. On the first night of jihai of the ninth month of year 12, a streaming star rose at mid-heaven; its head was like a jar and its tail like a two-hundred-hu boat, more than ten zhang long; it sounded like ducks in flight and shone like a torch; it passed below the moon and streamed westward; in a moment it struck the ground with a grinding roar, and three great sounds like collapsing houses rang out between Chen and Cai. On jihai of the fifth month of year 14, a large streaming star came forth from the head of the Northern Dipper, more than two zhang long, reached south to the Chariot, and vanished. The prognostication reads: "There will be an amnesty; the amnesty is gauged by the star's size." The market is where petty men gather; the Officials stand within the celestial court and govern the night watch. On bingshen of the intercalary tenth month, a streaming star as large as a dipper reached the upper star of the Middle Terrace. On the night of dingyou of the eighth month of year 3, a large streaming star like several dipper measures rose in the northwest, passed through Kui and Lou, and streamed southeast very close to the moon; bursting light scattered, and it struck the ground with a sound. In the fourth month, many stars fell within the Purple Forbidden Enclosure. On yimao of the seventh month, a large streaming star came forth from the Celestial Boat, transgressed the pivot star of the Dipper's head, and vanished. The prognostication reads: "There will be matters of boats and oars." On bingzi, a large streaming star came forth northeast of the Celestial General and entered the Turbid.

On bingshen of the eighth month, a large streaming star came forth from Wang Liang, more than four zhang long, and vanished at the ladle of the Northern Dipper. Wang Liang is the officer who attends the imperial carriage.

The River Drum signifies a general. The Celestial Club is the emperor's martial equipment. On dingyou of the sixth month of year 9, from dusk until the fourth watch, more than twenty streaming stars crisscrossed in and out of view, mostly near the Celestial River.

On xinwei of the eighth month, a streaming star came forth from the Feathered Forest with a tail-trail more than eight zhang long and sounded like thunder. The Feathered Forest is heaven's army. On renshen of the twelfth month, the Banner of Chiyou appeared.

On wuchen of the sixth month of Huichang 1, from dusk until the fifth watch, several tens of small stars streamed and scattered crisscrossing. The prognostication reads: "Small stars are the omen of the people." On gengwu of the seventh month, a star in the north lit the ground as it streamed northeast past Wang Liang with a sound like thunder. On renyin of the eleventh month, a large star streamed northeast, lighting the ground and sounding like thunder. On bingwu of the eighth month of year 4, a large star like a torch flame lit heaven and earth as it swept through the seven lodges of the western quarter from Kui and Lou and fell. On xinchou of the second month of year 6, in the middle of the night a streaming star red like a peach lit the ground with its tail-trail, pierced the Purple Forbidden Enclosure, and entered the Turbid.

On yiyou of the seventh month of Xiantong 6, on the first night watch a large streaming star several zhang long flashed like lightning, with a host of small stars following it from south to north. The omen signified that in the south someone would rebel with a multitude and march north. On dingyou of the eleventh month of year 9, a star came forth like a bolt of silk, spanning the sky, turned into clouds, and vanished; it was in the Chu allotment. This is called Chang Geng; when it appears, warfare arises. In the spring of year 13, two stars rose from the horizon, followed each other to mid-heaven shaped like banners, and then fell. In the ninth month, the Banner of Chiyou appeared.

In the winter of Qianfu 2, two stars, one red and one white and each as large as a dipper, followed each other streaming southeast, lighting the ground like the moon; they grew larger, their radiance fierce and angry. In year 3, in daylight a star like a torch flame, as large as a five-sheng vessel, came forth in the northeast, traveled slowly, and fell in the northwest. In the seventh month of year 4, a large streaming star like a bowl came from the Xu and Wei lodges, passed through the Celestial Market, and vanished in the Feathered Forest; the omen was read as foreign troops.

In Zhonghe 1, an unusual star came forth from the Celestial Cart. Prognosticators held it to be an evil star. On the night of jichou of the eighth month, stars fell like rain, some like cups and bowls, crossing and weaving like fabric; on the night of gengyin it was the same, until dingyou when it ceased. On the night of the eleventh month of year 3, stars fell in the northwest like rain.

In the ninth month of Guangqi 2, a large star fell before the Yanhe Pavilion of the Yangzhou prefectural headquarters, sounding like thunder, its flames lighting the ground. On renxu of the tenth month, a star came forth in the west, white in color, one zhang and five chi long, winding as it fell. The prognostication reads: "This is Chang Geng; when it descends, blood will flow." In the fifth month of year 3, Qin Zongquan mustered troops at the northern suburbs of Bian; in daylight a large star fell in his camp with a sound like thunder — this is called the Camp Head. Below it, armies were broken and generals killed.

In the summer of Qianning 1, a star fell in Yue Prefecture; afterward light more than a zhang long rose, shaped like a serpent. Some say it was the Crooked Arrow. In the sixth month of year 3, heaven poured violent rain with thunder and lightning; a star as large as a bowl rose in the southwest and fell in the northeast, colored like crane silk and sounding like ducks in flight. The omen was read as treacherous plots.

On bingzi of the ninth month of Guanghua 1, a large star fell in the north. On bingwu of the third month of year 3, a star like a twenty-hu boat, yellow in color, sharp in front and broad behind, traveled southwest. In the eleventh month, at mid-heaven a large star slowly streamed from the east like a bending belt; its light congealed upon the sky and only after the time of a meal did it vanish. This is called the Crooked Arrow.

In the second month of Tianfu 3, the emperor returned from Fengxiang; on the following day, a large star like the moon streamed westward from the turbid border in the east, sounding like thunder; its tail-trail crossed mid-heaven horizontally, and only after three nights did it vanish.

On wuyin of the fifth month of Tianyou 1, on the second night watch with rain and obscured darkness, a star twenty zhang long came forth in the east, facing southwest; black at the head, red at the tail, white in the middle — the Crooked Arrow, also called the Long Star. On yichou of the third month of year 2, in the middle of the night a large star came forth at mid-heaven like a five-dipper measure, streamed to the northwest, and stopped about ten zhang from the ground; above it star rays blazed like fire, red and yellow, about one zhang and five chi long, moving like a serpent; small stars all stirred and moved southeast; they fell like rain; in a little while they vanished; afterward pale blue vapor like bamboo thickets rushed up to mid-heaven, dim and hazy. The prognostication reads: "This is also the Crooked Arrow." In the twilight of the twelfth month of year 3, in the east a star like Taibai slowly rose from the ground, traveling very slowly; at mid-heaven it was like a first-quarter moon, then curved in its course; in a moment it divided into two. The prognostication reads: "There will be a great calamity."
