Emperor Yingzong, posthumous name Ruisheng Wenxiao, taboo name Shidebala, was Renzong's son by the primary consort. His mother was Empress Zhuangyi the Compassionate and Sacred of the Hongjira clan; he was born on jiazi day in the second month of the seventh year of Dade. When Renzong wished to install him as crown prince, he entered to attend upon the Empress Dowager and firmly declined, saying, "Your subject is young and without ability, and has an elder brother still living; the elder brother should be installed, with your subject to assist him." The Empress Dowager did not assent. On dinghai day in the twelfth month of the third year of YanYou he was installed as crown prince; he received the gold seal and treasure, and a princely household was opened with officials appointed. Surveillance censors Duan Fu, supervisor of the heir apparent's household Guo Guan, and others were first to request drawing near worthy men and selecting tutors; he welcomed and accepted this. In the tenth month of the sixth year, on wuwu day he received jade tablets; an edict commanded that all offices' diverse affairs must first be reported to the crown prince, and only then memorialized. He said to central secretariat officials, "The Supreme One has entrusted me with the affairs of the realm; day and night I stand in reverent awe, fearing only that I may not be equal to it. You too must cleanse your hearts and wash away your thoughts, diligently perform your duties, and not cause ruin that would bring grief to lord and father."

Moreover, they are former ministers of the late emperor — how can they be lightly displaced? Wait until I take the throne; then let it be deliberated among imperial kin and senior ministers — the worthy may be appointed, the wicked may be dismissed." Minister of Agriculture Wanbuhehua said, "The land and fields that the late emperor bestowed upon various ministers should all be returned to the government." He asked, "To whom were they granted?" The reply was, "Left chancellor Asan received the most." He said, "I have often instructed you to assist with a public heart. You once requested the sea-lake tax in the former reign, and it was halted because of Asan's memorial. What you now say is again private resentment — not public deliberation; how is this the way of assisting governance?" Wanbuhehua was thereupon transferred out as Hunan pacification commissioner. Grande indeed was Our Taizu Emperor, who received the mandate in season and steadied the era, first opening the imperial enterprise; Shizu Emperor's divine stratagem and keen designs unified the four seas. Saint succeeding saint, down to Our late emperor — utmost benevolence and deep virtue nourished all living beings and ruled the myriad states; 10 years are now complete. For the distant design of the altars of state, the great foundation of the realm was settled; in concert with deliberation among imperial kin, tablets and treasure were conferred. Just as the eastern palace joined in governance, suddenly Our honored father ascended as guest of Heaven. Princes, noble kin, founding ministers, and great aides all said that We ought to embody the weight of the late emperor's entrustment and the Empress Dowager's protective kindness — deeply bound in the hearts of the people, how could the sacred regalia stand empty? Joint memorials urged Our advance, and sincerity met in mutual trust. On the eleventh day of the third month he ascended the imperial throne at Great Brightness Hall. An amnesty was proclaimed to the realm.
