Astronomy I

The doctrine of reading Heaven is ancient indeed. The Book of Changes says: "Heaven hangs forth its signs, revealing fortune and misfortune; the sage takes these as images." It also says: "Contemplate the patterns of Heaven to discern the changes of the seasons." From antiquity onward, no state has failed to treat this matter with the utmost care. Therefore Yao appointed Xi and He to calculate and chart the sun, moon, stars, and constellations; Shun sat at the armillary sphere and jade sight-tube to align the seven regulators—and so astronomy acquired instruments for measurement and testing. Yet in antiquity three schools devised methods for it: the Zhou Bi, the Xuan Ye, and the Hun Tian. The Zhou Bi and Xuan Ye schools died out first, and the Hun Tian learning too had no transmission by the Qin. In Han times Luoxia Hong was the first to recover its techniques and made the armillary sphere to measure Heaven. Thereafter, passing through successive ages in continuous inheritance, whether there was gain or loss depended on the shallowness or depth of each person's wisdom and skill—not something easily reckoned at a stroke.

After the turmoil of the Jingkang era, the Song dynasty's astronomical instruments all passed to the Jin. When the Yuan arose and established its capital at Yan, at first they continued to use the Jin's old instruments, but the rings and graduations did not accord, and they could scarcely be put back into service. Thereupon the Grand Astrologer Guo Shoujing produced the simplified armillary, the upward-looking instrument, and his various other instruments—all of exquisite refinement, with insight and understanding surpassing the ancients. His doctrine held that in former times men used a tube to peer at Heaven, approximating lodge degrees and fractional remainders as somewhat more than half a degree too much, without hitting the true mark. He then used paired sight-threads for measurement, so that even the finest fractional remainders could all be verified. Moreover, at that time there were twenty-seven stations throughout the realm for measuring shadows—east to Goryeo, west to Dian Pool, south beyond Zhuya, north to the limits of Tiele—which was also something the ancients had never accomplished. For eighty years thereafter, the officials of the celestial bureau followed and used them without any discrepancy. As for solar and lunar eclipses, encroachments of the five luminaries, comets and meteors, halos and rainbows, and other phenomena tied to astronomical observation—all are preserved in brief records.

宿 ·
When Sima Qian wrote the Treatise on the Celestial Offices, and Ban Gu and Fan Ye wrote their Astronomical Treatises, their accounts of star names, territorial allotments, lodge positions, and calendrical calculation were thorough indeed. The Jin and Sui Astronomical Treatises were in fact composed by the Tang scholar Li Chunfeng. In their treatment of the twenty-eight lodges' degrees of motion, the two luminaries' and five planets' positions, timely omens and calamities, and territorial fortune and misfortune, they were unsurpassed in detail; later writers could not improve upon them. Therefore Ouyang Xiu compiled the Astronomical Treatise of the Book of Tang, first describing the celestial instruments, then recording solar and lunar eclipses, encroachments of the five stars, and stellar anomalies; and for all that earlier histories had already recorded, he omitted repetition entirely. The recent historians who compiled the Song Astronomical Treatise, by contrast, opened with chapters on astronomical instruments; while those who compiled the Jin Astronomical Treatise recorded only the changes of the sun, moon, and five stars. Truly, because the armillary sphere's construction is recorded in the Documents, and the calamities of sun and stars, wind and rain, frost and hail, and thunder are recorded in the Spring and Autumn Annals—to record them with care is not merely conventional historiography, but a deliberate effort to align with the sage's classics. We therefore follow these precedents in composing the Yuan Astronomical Treatise.

○ The Simplified Armillary
6
The simplified armillary is built upon a square pedestal one zhang eight chi long, its width being two-thirds of that length. The pedestal's upper surface is six cun wide, its lower edge eight cun, and its thickness equal to the upper width. Three transverse and three longitudinal sight-lines are laid across its center. Two run southward, their northern ends reaching the southern sight-line; one runs northward, its southern end reaching the central sight-line. A water channel one cun deep and five fen wider encircles the pedestal surface on all four sides. Foundation blocks at the four corners project two cun inside and outside the pedestal surface. Channels one cun deep and wide run around the foundations, connecting with the encircling channel on all four sides. Additional foundations are placed at the mao and you positions, wider at the four intermediate directions and longer by two-thirds of the width, with water channels constructed in the same manner. Two cloud-frame pillars for the north pole, four cun in diameter and one zhang two chi eight cun long. Their bases take the form of tortoise-clouds, set on the foundations at the qian and gen corners, facing inward on left and right, inclined to align with the equator and jointly piercing the upper ring. The ring is two chi four cun in diameter, one cun five fen wide, and twice that in thickness. A crosspiece at the center intersects as a diagonal cross, matching the ring in width and thickness. At its center is an aperture—five fen wide and one and a half cun square above, two cun five fen deep and one cun square below—to receive the north polar pivot shaft. Seven chi two cun above the pedestal surface along the slanting cloud-frame pillar is the transverse sight-line. From the sight-line's center to the aperture's center is six chi eight cun. Two dragon pillars are also set north of the midpoint of the mao-you foundations, ornamented with dragons and shaped like mountains at their bases, planted slanting northward to support the northern frame. Two cloud-frame pillars for the south pole are set south of the midpoint of the mao-you foundations, identical in width, thickness, and form to the northern frame. They slant toward the kun and xun corners and intersect as a cross, their upper ends level with the hundred-mark ring between chen-si and wei-shen, inclined southward to align with the equator, each one zhang one chi five cun long. Three chi eight cun above the pedestal surface along the slant is the transverse sight-line, which supports the hundred-mark ring. Below, two more dragon pillars are set on the foundations at the kun and xun corners, slanting northward, their upper ends matching the northern pillars in form.

The four-tour rotating ring is six chi in diameter, two cun wide and one cun thick, with a one-cun gap at the center, connected at the zi-wu and mao-you positions. Round apertures at zi-wu receive the north and south polar pivot shafts. Both faces are graduated with the degrees and minutes of the full circuit of Heaven, from the south pole to the north pole, with fractional remainders marked at the north pole. Four cun to either side of the north and south polar apertures, straight crosspieces matching the ring in width and thickness are set. At the center of each crosspiece a transverse bar runs east-west, connecting the two crosspieces and matching them in width and thickness. The bars' centers are joined in a piece three cun thick, with a square aperture eight fen across to receive the sighting-rule pivot shaft. The sighting rule is five chi nine cun four fen long, matching the ring in width and thickness, with a round aperture five fen in diameter at its waist to receive the pivot shaft. Both ends of the rule are shaped like jade-tablet heads to establish the central sight-line. Five fen from each jade-tablet head, a transverse ear stands on either side—two cun two fen high, as wide as the rule's face and three fen thick, with a round aperture six fen in diameter at its center. At its center, upper and lower lines mark the boundary for reading degrees and minutes.

The hundred-mark ring is six chi four cun in diameter and two cun wide on its face, graduated around its circumference with the twelve double-hours and hundred marks, each mark subdivided into thirty-six parts; it is two cun thick, widening to three cun above the midpoint. Cross-shaped crosspieces are also made, all to support the equatorial ring. Four round axles are laid horizontally on the broad inner face of the hundred-mark ring so the equatorial ring may rotate without sticking. The ring sinks one cun into the south polar frame and is nailed fast. The equatorial ring matches the four-tour ring in diameter, width, and thickness, its face finely engraved with the lodges and the degrees and minutes of the full circuit of Heaven. At its center is a cross-shaped crosspiece three cun wide, hollow one cun at the center and one cun thick. At the center is an aperture one cun in diameter to receive the south polar pivot shaft. Two boundary rules, each five chi nine cun four fen long and three cun wide. The rule heads are cut obliquely five fen deep and graduated in degrees and minutes to align with the ring surface. An aperture at the waist again receives the equatorial ring and south polar pivot shaft. On the upper rule, both ends from the long aperture to the rule head are double thickness, so that when the two rules rotate they rest flush on the ring surface without rising or falling, and degrees and minutes are easily read. Both polar pivot shafts are made of steel, six cun long—half as base, half as shaft. The base is graduated identically to the upper ring crosspiece's center, sized to accommodate a shaft one cun in diameter. The north polar shaft has a hole at its center, pierced horizontally at the bottom through both sides; a thread emerges from the center, bends at the base, passes through both sides of the horizontal hole, and is knotted. Three fen of thread remain in the hole and are knotted; threads above and below pass through holes at both ends of the boundary rule, opening through the rule's base along a channel cut along its center to receive the thread, which enters straight into the inner boundary's long aperture. At the rule's waist another aperture is made, and the thread emerges through the rule's base and is knotted.

The fixed-pole ring is half a cun wide and twice that thick, arched in form, with an inner diameter of six degrees, each degree about one cun. The pole star lies three degrees from the unmoving point, allowing barely a full rotation. At its center a diagonal cross crosspiece, matching the ring in width and thickness, connects to the upper ring. At the ring crosspiece's center is a hole five li in diameter. Six cun five fen below is the north polar shaft's center; a copper plate is also set, connected to the south polar cloud-frame's cross, two cun square and five fen thick. Its north face is hollowed at the center, leaving one li of thickness; at the center is a round hole one fen in diameter, and from the hole's center to the south polar shaft's center is likewise six cun five fen. Two rings are also made: the first is the yin-latitude ring, its face engraved with the directions, laid horizontally with the northern cross of the pedestal's longitudinal and transverse sight-lines as its center. The second is called the standing-motion ring, its face graduated in degrees and minutes, set below the north polar cloud-frame pillars at the horizontal ring's center, attached above to the frame's transverse sight-line and reaching below to the pedestal sight-lines' cross, with pivot shafts above and below allowing rotation. A straight crosspiece at the center has an aperture for the sighting rule, which can be raised and lowered to sight the degrees at which the sun, moon, stars, and constellations emerge above the horizon. By the four-tour ring described above, rotating east-west and rising and falling north-south, the degrees from the pole of the seven regulators, lodges, and inner and outer asterisms are all measured. The equatorial ring rotates; when aligned with a lodge's determinant star, the boundary rule is turned until the two threads face each other, measuring the degrees at which the sun, moon, five stars, and inner and outer asterisms enter the lodges. With the hundred-mark ring, turn the boundary rule until the two threads face the sun; the mark directly below gives the daytime hour, while at night stars are used to determine it. Compared with the old instrument for measuring the rising and setting of the sun, moon, and five stars, there is no obstruction from the yang-meridian, yin-latitude, and cloud pillars.

Its celestial globe is spherical like a pellet, six chi in diameter, with the degrees and minutes of the full circuit of Heaven painted longitudinally and latitudinally. The equator is centered, each pole lying a quarter of the full circuit of Heaven away. The ecliptic crosses inside and outside the equator by a little less than twenty-four degrees in each direction. The moon travels the white path, its crossings variable; bamboo splints evenly divide the heavenly degrees to verify where the ecliptic intersects, shifting with the seasons. First use the simplified armillary to measure degrees of lodge entry and distance from the pole, apply them to the globe, and verify the relative positions of the ecliptic and equator—clear and easy to distinguish—while still taking calculation as the standard. The globe rests upon a square chest, the north and south poles each projecting a little more than forty degrees above and below the chest's surface, half visible and half concealed, with the driving wheels and gears hidden within the chest.
11
○ The Upward-Looking Instrument
12
竿 竿 退
The upward-looking instrument is made of copper, shaped like a cauldron, and set upon a brick platform. The interior is painted with the degrees of the full circuit of Heaven and the rim marked with the twelve double-hour positions—it is used to verify Heaven by looking downward. Its inscription reads: "Heaven cannot be given bodily form; nothing is greater than Heaven. Without rival is man, who looks up at the cauldron that bears him. Six chi for its depth, its width twice that. Depth and width both doubled, it is the cauldron of dui. A ring is carved as a marsh, the standard by which to irrigate. Discerning squareness and fixing position, it is called the zi hexagram. On the cross-rod, the contracting scale marks the center; level and tilt are set once more. It rises obliquely toward the south pole, level with the cauldron's rim. Great and small paths must run full circle, painted where they sink into the earth. At first the path runs full circle, then dips and breaks off, dipping beyond the pole. The pole's depth below the earth is forty degrees and a fraction. Ninety-one degrees to the north, where the equator meets it. Fifty marks are arrayed, paired with the six watches of the day. The cross-rod bears hexagram marks, with xun and kun set within. It supports the contracting rod, north and south set in opposition. At the top the armillary board turns, admitting sunlight through a pinhole no larger than a mustard seed. Above and below hang plumb straight, meeting at the cauldron's rim. Watch the sun's light pass through, and see at which degree it stands. At the narrow valley it greets the morning sun; at evening it sees off the fading light. Cold and heat expand and contract, verifying the sun's advance and retreat. Thin eclipses arise from it, a mirror of generation and destruction. It avoids the blazing sun, sparing the eyes from harm. North-south deflection can also be reckoned at a glance. Where the pole is shallow by fifteen degrees, at the border of Linyi. The ecliptic rides high in summer, as men are borne upon the earth. Summer days are long and winter days short, yet the difference remains slight. Fifty-odd degrees deep, iron bands seal it shut. The ecliptic dips level; winter daylight grows dim. In summer the sun does not set; the shortest day marks the utmost limit. It settles the Hun Tian and Xuan Ye schools, the dawn dome of the canopy sky. Books of the six heavens speak in different tongues. One instrument, one standard—which is sound and which is perverse? It tells by pointing; there is no need for idle talk. Darkness is aided by light, and doubters abound. The wise approve it; the obstinate find it strange. Clever calendar experts past and present cannot be numbered in the millions. Without yielding humility one dare not act, for thought cannot reach so far. It will spy Heaven's countenance, beloved of creation. Should there be eminent brilliance, it illumines a sage generation. Mount Tai may be ground on a whetstone, the river become a belt. Gold is not worn away; long endurance depends on it. Spirits forbid reproach—do not mar this inscription."

○ The Daming Hall Lamp Clepsydra
14
調
The lamp clepsydra stands one zhang and seven chi high, its frame wrought in gold. On the curved beam a cloud pearl is set at the center, with the sun on the left and the moon on the right. Beneath the cloud pearl another pearl is suspended. Both ends of the beam are adorned with dragon heads, mouths agape and eyes turning, by which one may judge whether the leveling water runs slow or fast. On the central beam stand two dragons playing with a pearl, bobbing as the pearl rises and falls, by which one may also observe whether the regulating water is evenly adjusted. None of these features are merely ornamental. The lamp sphere is wrought of gold and precious stones, divided within into four layers. The upper ring bears the four guardian spirits, turning to the positions of the sun, moon, and stars; it rotates leftward through one solar circuit. Below them are figures of the dragon, tiger, bird, and tortoise, each in its quarter, leaping at each mark while cymbals sound in response within. Below that the day is divided into one hundred marks, with twelve spirits arrayed above, each holding a time tablet; when the hour arrives, all four gates announce it. Inside the gate a figure stands, always pointing out the number of the mark. At the four lower corners stand figures for bell, drum, gong, and cymbal; at the first mark the bell sounds, at the second the drum, at the third the gong, at the fourth the cymbal—and so through each watch of the day. Its mechanism and triggers are concealed in a cabinet and driven by water.
15
○ The Levelling Square Plate
16
The levelling square plate is four chi square and one cun thick. A water channel five fen wide is cut all around, inset from the edge. First fix the center and draw a cross reaching outward to the water channel. One cun from the center draw a circle; then draw circles at each cun outward, nineteen circles in all. Three fen inside the outer circle draw a second circle, marked throughout with the degrees of the full circuit of Heaven. At the center is a circular socket two cun in diameter and equally deep. In the socket at the center plant the gnomon post, one chi five cun high; traveling southward reduce it by five cun, traveling northward double it.
17
西 西 西西 西
To square the four directions, set the plate on level ground, fill the channel until the water is level, then plant the gnomon post at the center. From when the gnomon's shadow enters the outer circle from the west, mark each position in ink; mark again at every slight shift, circle by circle, until the shadow exits the outer circle on the east. For each pair of marks where the shadow enters and leaves a circle, stretch a cord and fold it in half to find the midpoint; where the mark aligns with the gnomon and the shadow is shortest, north and south are true. Review the marks on every circle again to confirm north and south. Once north and south are true, east and west follow of themselves. Near the two solstices the sun's path runs chiefly east-west with little north-south deviation, so the marks where the shadow enters and leaves the outer circle may be taken for east and west with good accuracy. Near the two equinoxes the sun's path runs east-west with greater north-south deviation, and morning and evening differ; the outer-circle marks may not be reliable—one must take marks on the inner circles as the standard, checking over several days for greater accuracy.
18
For use in observation, first measure the local altitude of the north celestial pole above the horizon; from the plate's level mark that many degrees upward and the corresponding degrees of the south pole below, draw an ink line slanting through the center, then cross it horizontally at the center—this gives the oblique line of the celestial equator. Then set the plate on edge and hang a plumb line to establish the true vertical. Whenever astronomical instruments are set up, this serves as the standard.
19
○ The Gnomon Table
20
The gnomon table is made of stone, one hundred twenty-eight chi long, four chi five cun wide, one chi four cun thick, on a pedestal two chi six cun high. At the north and south ends are circular pools one chi five cun across and two cun deep; one chi north of the table, their centers align vertically with the crossbeam. For one hundred twenty chi outward from the center, a strip four cun wide at the center and one cun on each side is marked in cun, fen, and finer divisions, running to the north end. A water channel one cun wide and deep runs on either side, connecting the north and south pools to establish a level surface. The gnomon is fifty chi long, two chi four cun wide, half as thick as it is wide, set in the stone socket at the south end of the table; one zhang four chi is buried in the ground and pedestal, leaving thirty-six chi above. At its top two dragons, half-emerging from the shaft, support a crossbeam; from the beam's center to the gnomon's tip is four chi, and down to the table face the whole height is forty chi. The beam is six chi long and three cun in diameter, with a water channel along its top for leveling. Horizontal holes two fen wide pierce both ends and the center of the beam; iron rods five cun long pass through them, cords meet at the center, and a plumb bob hangs to true the beam and guard against tilting.
21
便
When the gnomon is short, the cun and fen on the scale are cramped, and the fractional subdivisions below—fen, miao, tai, ban, and shao—are hard to distinguish; when it is long the cun and fen are easier to read, but the shadow grows faint and diffuse, making a sharp image hard to obtain. Earlier observers, seeking the true reading within a diffuse shadow, used a sighting tube, a small gnomon, or a wooden frame—all to catch the sunlight at the tip and direct it down to the measuring surface. Now the gnomon is made of bronze, thirty-six chi high, with two dragons at the top supporting a crossbeam; from the beam down to the table face the total height is forty chi—equivalent to five times the standard eight-chi gnomon. The table is marked in cun and fen; where the old scale showed one cun, the new scale expands it to five, so li and hao divisions are easily distinguished.
22
○ The Shadow Reticle
23
穿 使
The shadow reticle is a copper plate two cun wide and twice as long, pierced at the center with a hole no larger than a needle's eye. It rests on a square base with a pivot at one end so it can open and close; one end is propped so the plate tilts, higher in the north and lower in the south, and can be shifted back and forth beneath the hollow crossbeam. Sunlight passes through the hole, barely the size of a grain of rice, and the crossbeam is faintly visible within. By the old method one measured the shadow from the gnomon's tip, obtaining only the image of the sun's upper limb. Now the crossbeam is used instead, yielding the true central shadow, without the slightest error. Summer solstice shadow in Zhiyuan 16 (1289), year jimao: on the 19th day of the 4th month (day yimo) the shadow was 1 zhang 2 chi 3 cun 6 fen 9 li 5 hao. Winter solstice shadow in Zhiyuan 16 (1289), year jimao: on the 24th day of the 10th month (day wuxu) the shadow was 7 zhang 6 chi 7 cun 4 fen.
24
○ The Sighting Frame
25
The sighting frame is six chi long, two chi wide, and twice as high. Below is a base three cun wide and two cun thick; the upper frame is four cun wide and equally thick. The face is a board one cun thick, with feet at the four corners braced by slanting timbers, built as a true square. A clear aperture four chi long and two cun wide is cut in the center of the face. One cun on either side of the aperture is marked in chi, with finer divisions carved within three cun, aligning with the gnomon table below. From the frame's face to the center of the crossbeam is twenty-six chi, taken as the standard height. The sighting vanes are each two chi four cun long and two cun wide, five fen thick at the ridge, with slanting notched edges fitted flush to the frame; two cun is left at each end to seat them in the frame base. When a star or the moon is on the meridian, sight upward through the frame, using the crossbeam's north-south line as reference; halve the reading in cun and fen to obtain the true shadow length. Observations may also be taken the same day from distant stations to compare shadow lengths and deduce the altitude of stars and the moon.

○ Western Regions Armillary Sphere. In year 4 of Zhiyuan (1267), under Emperor Shizu, Jamal al-Din constructed the Western Regions armillary sphere:
27
禿
The zantu halaji: in Chinese, the armillary sphere. It is made of copper, with a single ring set level, graduated in degrees around the full circuit of heaven and marked with the twelve terrestrial branches to align with the horizon. A pair of rings stands vertically, joined to the level ring at the north-south axis, half sunk below the ground, to mark off the degrees of the sky. Inside, a second pair of rings, likewise graduated around the full circuit of heaven, is set at an oblique angle and joined to the vertical pair, with the poles placed thirty-six degrees above the horizon so that it can rotate and represent the motion of heaven as the path of the sun's daily course. The third and fourth rings within are both attached to the second ring, set a further twenty-four degrees from the poles, and can also be turned. Each of the three movable rings has a copper square peg fixed opposite it, every one pierced with an aperture to serve in place of the sighting tube for observations aloft.
28
禿
The zantu shuoba tai: in Chinese, the instrument for observing and verifying the stars throughout the circuit of heaven. It has a circular outer wall with a door opening to the east; inside stands a small platform bearing a copper gnomon seven chi five cun tall, fitted above with a pivot from which hangs a copper rod five chi five cun long, with two sighting tubes of the same length added for observation; below is a horizontal scale graduated in degrees to align with the hanging rod. The base is cut with graduated arcs for near and far sighting; it can be swung left and right for a full sweep of the sky and raised or lowered for observations at every altitude.
29
西
The ruhama yi miao'ao zhi: in Chinese, the equinox gnomon-shadow hall. It is built as a two-bay hall with a horizontal slit along the ridge running east to west, through which the sun's rays strike the gnomon obliquely. Inside is a platform sloping southward and downward to the north with the noon shadow; set upon it face upward is a copper semicircle graduated in one hundred eighty degrees of the sky to match the visible half of the heavens; a sharp-edged copper rod six chi long and one cun six fen wide leans against it, joined at the top to the center of the semicircle and resting below upon its rim, so that it can be moved back and forth for sighting; by viewing the gnomon shadow cast through the roof slit from the side and checking the degrees, the spring and autumn equinoxes are determined.
30
The ruhama yi musita yu: in Chinese, the solstice gnomon-shadow hall. It is built as a five-bay hall with a pit beneath, two zhang two chi deep; a north-south slit in the ridge admits the sun's rays straight down to the gnomon. A wall stands along the slit, and a copper rod one zhang six cun long is hung against it. Painted facing upward on the wall is a semicircle of celestial degrees; the rod too can be shifted along this arc; by sighting directly upon the gnomon shadow cast through the roof, the winter and summer solstices are fixed.
31
宿
The kulai yi sama: in Chinese, the celestial globe. It is a copper sphere with the degrees of the sun's path and its intersecting rings cut obliquely upon its surface, and the figures of the twenty-eight lunar lodges engraved upon it. Around it is set level a single copper ring graduated in degrees around the full circuit of heaven and marked with the twelve terrestrial branches to align with the ground. Two single rings stand vertically: one joined to the level ring at the north-south axis, with copper pegs marking the poles; one joined at the east-west axis—both graduated in celestial degrees. It is essentially an armillary sphere, but one that cannot be turned for observation.
32
The kulai yi a'erzi: in Chinese, the terrestrial globe. It is a wooden sphere on which seven-tenths represent water, colored green, and three-tenths land, colored white. Rivers, lakes, and seas are painted upon it, their courses threaded through in continuous lines. It is marked with small square grids by which to reckon the sphere's breadth and girth and the distances between places.
33
西
The wusu du'erlabu: in Chinese, the instrument for telling the hours of day and night. It is made of copper in the form of a round mirror that can be hung up, its face marked with the twelve terrestrial branches and the hours of day and night; a copper bar is pivoted across its center so that it can rotate. Each end of the copper bar is bent into a pair of sighting holes facing one another; by day the sun's shadow is read, by night the stars are sighted, to determine the hour and to discern auspice and ill omen. Mirror plates are set into the back, with seven diagrams engraved on three faces, to show how the length of the noon shadow differs in the four directions and how the stars vary in their aspect toward the observer; hence a separate diagram for each, depicting the transformations of heaven and earth.

48
