That afternoon, as thunder and rain fell, fire descended from the sky—from the mouth of the dragon-fish ornament on the hall's eastern roof-ridge flames burst forth, and the Buddha image itself caught fire. The emperor wept when he heard the news and urgently ordered officials to the scene; only the spirit tablets in the eastern and western memorial halls and a few precious objects were saved—everything else was destroyed by fire. The temple had formerly been known as White Pagoda; since Kublai's reign it had served as the place where officials rehearsed court ceremony, and its hall steps and railings were laid out just like those of the inner palace. Under Chengzong, Kublai's memorial hall was installed west of the main hall and Prince Yuzong's to the east; each month a senior minister was dispatched to offer sacrifice.

In the sixth month of the sixteenth year at Zhangde Circuit, reed leaves stacked up layer by layer until they wove themselves into banner-like shapes, with pointed leaves at the top clumping together like spearheads. A folk rhyme ran: "When reeds turn to flags, the people flee their homes; When reeds turn to spears, war and slaughter bring disaster. There were also millet stalks on which characters appeared spontaneously—red stalks bearing black writing—with the upper node reading "Peace under Heaven" and the lower node reading "War under Heaven." One of the pair flew off; the other lingered and was shot dead by a Zhuang hunter. Its head measured about a foot long and its plumage was five-colored; someone preserved the carcass and presented it to the military command, and long afterward its colors remained as vivid as in life. In the fifth month, more than a hundred large birds flew to the summit of Bailang Mountain west of Xingguo Prefecture, standing upright like human figures; they departed and returned several times. In the nineteenth year, owls and horned owls at the capital hooted all night until dawn for months on end; cuckoos were heard calling in the city, and the same occurred at Juyong Pass. On the first day of the third month of the twenty-seventh year at Dashe Village in Zhaoyuan County, Laizhou, a black gale erupted; a huge pale bird flew in from the south with wings spanning a mat's width, looking like a crane. It soon departed, scattering several pints of millet, glutinous millet, rice, wheat, yellow and black beans, and buckwheat onto the Zhang family's roof—a year of bountiful harvest followed.

On the first day of the first month of the second year of Yuantong, blood-red rain fell over Henan Province. On the jisi day of the seventh month of the twenty-first year, blood-red vapor blanketed the northwestern sky over Xin Prefecture in Jining Circuit before finally dispersing. On the renwu day of the eighth month, a crimson vapor streak stretched across the midnight sky over Di Prefecture from northwest to northeast. On the guiwei day, red vapor filled the night sky northwest of Zhangde and did not fade until dawn. On the yiyou day, north of Datong Circuit, a scarlet vapor veiled the sky at night, cutting straight through the zenith from east to west; it dispersed only after some time—and this occurred three times. At daybreak on the guisi day of the tenth month, fire-like red vapor appeared in the northern sky over Jiang Prefecture. On the renxu day of the third month of the twenty-third year, crimson vapor filled the night sky over Datong Circuit, encroaching upon the Northern Dipper. On the dingsi day of the sixth month at dusk, fire-like red light appeared in the north over Jiang Prefecture, mingled with black vapor; two white rainbows pierced straight toward the Northern Dipper before finally dissipating. On the gengshen day at dusk north of Jinning Circuit, the sky turned red with three white arcs like rainbows—one crossing the Northern Dipper, one the Celestial Pole, and one the Celestial Bridge—before fading at midnight. On the bingchen day of the eighth month, northeast of Xin Prefecture, crimson vapor filled the night sky with a white serpent-like form gliding slowly through it before dissipating.
