How great is the founding enterprise of the sacred ancestor! Later heirs continued the succession in order to extend affection among kin. By the time of Emperor Xiaowu, the feudal kings' territories had exceeded the regulations; some had overstepped proper bounds and departed from the law, while their sons and younger brothers remained mere commoners—the weighty and light were not properly balanced. He therefore issued an edict to the Imperial Censor: "If any feudal king wishes to extend private favor by dividing estates among his sons and younger brothers, let each submit a separate memorial; I shall personally fix their titles and names." From this time onward, all collateral lines and younger sons were enfeoffed as marquises. As the Odes say, "King Wen's descendants, the main line and collateral branches for a hundred generations"—how true indeed!

In the reign of Emperor Xiaoyuan, among those enfeoffed as marquises among the imperial princes' sons, not one house survived to the end; their rise and fall from beginning to end—was this not fate! At the beginning of the Yuan Shi reign period, Wang Mang controlled the court, fraudulently rewarded the imperial clan with enfeoffments, and marquisates were granted even to kings' grandsons; During the Regency they became ever more numerous, yet as they were not legitimate enfeoffments, they are not recorded here. In no time they too died out—how sad!
