陝西巡撫畢沅嘗兩署陝甘總督，獨置不問。 Shaanxi Governor Bi Yuan had twice served as acting Shaan-Gan governor-general yet was left untouched.

灃疏言：「冒賑折捐，固由亶望骫法，但亶望為布政使時，沅兩署總督，近在同城，豈無聞見？ Feng memorialized: "The fraud was certainly Danwang's doing, yet when Danwang was provincial commissioner Bi Yuan twice acted as governor-general in the same city—could he have known nothing?

使沅早發其奸，則播惡不至如此之甚； Had Yuan exposed the crime early, the evil would not have spread so far;

上為詰責沅，降秩視三品，事具沅傳。 The Emperor rebuked Bi Yuan and reduced him to third rank; the affair is recorded in his biography.

引疾乞罷，上以金鼇有勞，下總督畢沅察病狀，乃加左都督，允解官歸。 He pleaded illness and asked to retire; the emperor, mindful of his service, had Governor-General Bi Yuan verify his condition, promoted him to Left Commissioner-in-Chief, and allowed him to resign and return home.

石如乃去，客兩湖總督畢沅，沅故好客，吳中名士多集節署，裘馬都麗，石如獨布衣徒步。 Shiru then left for the Huguang governor Bi Yuan, a renowned host at whose headquarters Wu literati gathered in splendid style while Shiru alone went in plain dress on foot.

居三年，辭歸，沅為置田宅，俾終老。 After three years he took his leave; Bi Yuan provided him with land and a house so that he could live out his old age in comfort.
