陳堂前，漢州雒縣王氏女。 Chen Tangqian was the daughter of the Wang clan of Luoxian in Hanzhou.

節操行義，為鄉人所敬，但呼曰“堂前”，猶私家尊其母也。 Her chastity, conduct, and righteousness won the respect of the district; people simply called her "Tangqian," as families respectfully address a mother.

堂前年十八，歸同郡陳安節，歲餘夫卒，僅有一子。 Tangqian was eighteen when she married Chen Anjie of the same prefecture; after little more than a year her husband died, leaving only one son.

舅姑無生事，堂前斂泣告曰：“人之有子，在奉親克家爾。 Her parents-in-law had no means of support; Tangqian, holding back tears, said: "The purpose of having sons is to serve parents and sustain the household.

初，堂前歸陳，夫之妹尚幼，堂前教育之，及笄，以厚禮嫁遣。 When Tangqian first married into the Chen family, her husband's younger sister was still young; Tangqian educated her and, when she came of age, sent her off with generous marriage rites.

舅姑亡，妹求分財產，堂前盡遺室中所有，無靳色。 When her parents-in-law died, the younger sister sought a division of property; Tangqian gave her everything in the house without hesitation.

堂前為買田置屋，撫育諸甥無異己子。 Tangqian bought fields and a house for her and reared her nephews no differently from her own sons.

裏有故家甘氏，貧而質其季女於酒家，堂前出金贖之，俾有所歸。 In the lane was an old family, the Gans, so poor they had pawned their youngest daughter to a wine shop; Tangqian paid gold to redeem her and gave her a proper home.
